The 2019 Parade of Tropical Fools winds its way through a packed crowd in Caseville. (Andrew Mullin/Huron Daily Tribune)

Caseville prepares for longawaited ‘Cheeseburger Festival’ Caseville’s long-awaited annual Cheeseburger Festival will kick off Aug. 13 with a variety of events and activities. The festival will run until Aug. 22 with the theme of “A Little Piece of Paradise.” Chamber of Commerce President and Event Coordinator Steve Louwers said the theme is open to interpretation by attendees. “Our shirts are gonna have, of course, a parrot on it,” Louwers said, “But when I think of paradise, I imagine this parrot is going to be laying on a hammock between two palm trees, with a beautiful sunset in the background. To me, that’s paradise.” As per tradition, the 10-day festival will feature the “Tropical Fools Parade” at 5:30 on Aug. 18 through town. To walk in the parade, entries must be submitted by Aug. 17, and applications can be found on the Caseville Chamber of Commerce website. In past years, Louwers said the parade has brought in approximately 50,000 attendees from across Michigan and runs for about two hours. “We get some extremely clever floats, big cheeseburgers or big big parrots and stuff like that,” Louwers said. “It’s just unique, something that’s hard to explain, but something you don’t see in a normal parade.” Louwers said the Caseville Chamber of Commerce has

partnered with local businesses and community organizations to put on hundreds of events throughout the festival.

The Pigeon Band Shell was designed to offer a forum for local talent, and to provide a wide variety of entertainment for local residents and vacationers.

CHEESEBURGER Continued from Page 7 Louwers said he’s excited for its return, especially because of the uncertainty leading up to planning efforts. “It’s been a lot more difficult trying to put this together in three months, as opposed to eight to nine months because we didn’t have any positivity that we were going to be doing the festival this year,” Louwers said. “(With the loosening of COVID restrictions), we’re excited to do it, and we always make it work.” Other festival highlights include cheeseburger vendors, live musical performances, various contests and tournaments, a cardboard boat race and a new downhill cart derby race. “Some people come because they enjoy buying hamburgers from the fire department or because they enjoy the beach activities, because they’re strictly Jimmy Buffett Parrotheads for the rock music at night, and some just come for the parade,” Louwers said. “I want all those people to come and be satisfied with our festival.” With more events yet to be added to the schedule, Louwers said this year’s festival will rival past years and perhaps exceed them in size and magnitude. Despite the buzz for the festival, Louwers said he hopes attendees can still be mindful of safety protocols and guidelines, exercising caution if they have

not been vaccinated. “I just want everyone to go home happy and of course,

ABC Day returns to Port Hope Aug. 21 MARK BIRDSALL mark.birdsall@hearstnp.com If you’re tired of the hustle and bustle of 21st century life and just experience a bit of that simpler life of days gone by, look no further than ABC Day in Port Hope. The annual event – centered on antiques, crafts and collectibles and Port Hope’s famous bean soup – returns Saturday, Aug. 21, following a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic. Leslie Blum, a Port Hope merchant, said the town takes a lot of pride in what they consider “Port Hope’s own festival.” “We just have a good time,” Blum said. Those wishing to catch a glimpse of the past can take a stroll back in time in downtown Port Hope see items and clothing from yesteryear. The schedule of events has been finalized, Blum said, and activities and attractions

throughout the day will include vendors, a petting zoo, old-fashioned bicycles, a car and motorcycle show, a bounce house for the kids and rock mining. Among other possible attractions include the Port Hope Railroad Depot and Heritage Center, where you can ring the bell, see artifacts, a running model train and Port Hope village display; a tour of Port Hope’s old jail; and a 1930s and 40s-era streetscape viewing at Rubicon Township Hall. Food like hot dogs, popcorn, lemonade, doughnuts and elephant ears will also be available at the family friendly event. Port Hope has 11 historic sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can pick up a walking tour brochure at any business in town. For more information contact the Port Hope Mercantile at 989-428-0024.

The Huron Community Fair makes its post-pandemic triumphant return Aug. 1-7, 2021. (Tribune File Photos)

Huron Community Fair returns for 153rd year SCOTT NUNN scott.nunn@hearstnp.com Heartbreak has turned to celebration as the Huron Community Fair presses forward with its 153rd year. The seven-day annual event, like virtually everything else in the state, was canceled last year due to the pandemic. Fairboard President Clark Brock said this year’s return is cause for celebration. “We are having a fair this year,” Brock said. “That is what I am excited about. I am excited that we get to have all the kids back with their projects and exhibits and everyone gets to come have a good time.” Brock said harness racing returns after a several year hiatus. “We have not had it for a number of years,” Brock said. “When casinos started gaining momentum, harness race horsing left the state of Michigan because there was no money to be had. The last time we had harness racing here was around eight years ago.” Brock said the number of horses and races continued to dwindle, so the fair board made the difficult decision to get rid of it. However, in recent years harness racing popularity has returned and Brock said the fair saw an opportunity to bring the racing back and enjoy some nostalgia. “People enjoy it,” Brock said. “It is back to the old time fair. It is a free event and is a fun way to kick off the fair.” Brock said another new item at the fair this year is racing pigs, which will perform three times daily Tuesday through Friday. The racing pigs will be

located near the information office. “Everybody loves it,” Brock said. “It is fun and exciting.” Throughout the week the fair will feature the traditional carnival and midway with T.J. Schmidt & Company. The fair will also feature its annual grandstand events. “We have the truck races, demo derby, rodeo and tractor pulls,” Brock said. “The things people always have a lot of fun at.” Beginning Sunday, Aug. 1, there will be a variety of activities at the fairgrounds, starting with the arrival of livestock, BINGO, harness racing, the horse show, and at 7 p.m. the opening ceremony and flag raising. Some of Monday’s events include the rabbit show, horse show, silent auction, sheep show, and KOI drag racing in the grandstands at 7 p.m. Tuesday, which is also Kid’s Day, includes the swine, horse and dairy shows, open-

ing of the midway, and the beef show. Wednesday kicks off with the feeder show, poultry show, and more and is topped off with the demo derby at 7 p.m. Thursday features the beef show, goat show and the Super Kicker Rodeo in the evening. Thursday is also the Special Needs Kids Event, when the fair sets aside time for special needs children and their families to experience the fair. Friday’s events are the junior livestock auctions and the redneck truck race in the grandstands. Saturday is the small livestock auctions, antique tractor show, showmanship contests and the tractor pull. Brock said this year’s fair book is online due to the pandemic. “There wasn’t enough time to put a fair book to print,” Brock said. For a complete listing of fair events visit www.huroncommunityfair.com.

BIKERS Continued from Page 17 event to Harbor Beach, but he had been wanting to host it since he got a Harley a couple of years ago. “Our city director has a motorcycle and then our community promotions director Kelly and her husband have motorcycles, so I thought this would be a great idea for the (biker community),” Booms said. With the pandemic, the idea never took off as he had hoped, but Booms saw a second chance this summer. “We thought we’ll give it a try and see what happens,” Booms said. “We’re always looking for different ways to get people to come to Harbor Beach, support the community and promote Huron County and the Thumb in general.” Booms said it would be great just to have 20 bikes come out for the event’s first year running, but he has no idea what to expect as far as turnout. “Hopefully we get to draw some people over and just have a good time and promote the area,” Booms said. “If it goes over this year great, next year we might expand it out and maybe cruise a little further.” Depending on how this year goes, Booms sees potential for expansion in the future by adding more shows and making the event

more family-friendly moving forward. Though the event is geared toward bikers, Booms said he still encour-

ages everyone to come on out to the beach for music and food. “If you have a love for motorcycles and want to

FRIDAY, JULY 23, 2021 support our local community, come on out,” Booms said. Booms said the schedule is still tentative and subject to

CHARITY ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

Charity Island Lighthouse was established in 1857, and currently is privately owned. It stands in ruins at the northwest tip of Big Charity Island. Visit www.charityisland.net for more information.

HARBOR BEACH LIGHTHOUSE

The Harbor Beach Lighthouse is located at the end of the north breakwater entrance to the harbor of refuge. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society has been working with city officials to preserve the historic landmark. Port Austin Reef Light is located in Lake Huron, 2 1/2 miles north of the Village of Port Austin. Construction was completed in 1878.

POINTE AUX BARQUES LIGHTHOUSE

The original Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse was constructed of stone taken from the shore of Lake Huron in 1848. The keeper’s house and separate tower were located on a three acre clearing hacked out of the dense wilderness. By 1857, the ravages of shoreline weather and a fire in the interior of the house created the need for a new structure. The new keeper’s house and attached 89-foot tower were built of the finest brick available. The light is still an active aid to navigation, making Pointe aux Barques one of the oldest continuously operating Lights on the Great Lakes. In 1875, a Class A lifesaving station was constructed 300 yards south of the lighthouse. It was the first lifesaving station opened on the Great Lakes. The 62 year history of the station credits over 200 rescues to this station and its brave crews. The Thumb Bottomland Preserve surrounding Pointe aux Barques contains 105 known wrecks, reflecting the danger posed by shoals surrounding Pointe aux Barques. The Pointe aux Barques keeper’s house and tower have been completely restored and contain historical artifacts from a bygone era. The museum is open to the public free of charge and donations are appreciated to help fund the society’s projects. The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse is located six miles north of Port Hope off M-25 on Lighthouse Road in Lighthouse County Park.
