Agriculture Issues Contest L-R: Hannah Keim, Peyton Kuhn, Jackie Good, Tyler Hill, Alex Smith, Savannah Schulz, Maya Viers

Students present the pros and cons of their chosen agriculture issue for this contest. They then put together a 15 minute presentation which shows both sides of the issue. At the conclusion, they must answer 5 minutes of questions relating to their topic. Our team’s topic this year was Gal Safe or Gal Sorry. Inspired by Emily Smith’s Prepared Public speech from last year, this team took the concept and highlighted the risks and benefits of genetically modified pigs. These pigs have the Alpha Gal Sugar removed from the surface of their cells in order to allow individuals to consume pork products who otherwise would not be able to. This revolutionary

concept has opened the food, pharmaceutical and medical industries to new possibilities to benefit consumers. The group decided on a talk show format, as it had recently been in the news featuring the 1st in human heart transplant from a genetically modified pig. Team members include: Alex Smith as the host of “Agriculture Today”; Peyton Kuhn, Swine Specialist; Tyler Hill, Consumer with AGS; Hannah Keim, Vegan Naturalist; Maya Viers, Geneticist; Savannah Schulz, Pharmaceutical Rep; Jackie Good, Doctor at John Hopkins Hospital. Our team was named 2nd in the state!

Parliamentary Procedure The highest level of running effective meetings, students demonstrate over 12 abilities throughout their meeting, while solving a topic and providing debate related to their item of business. Students also demonstrate their knowledge through a written test, prior to delivering their presentation to a panel of judges. Our team placed 4th in the state! Team members are: chairman, Brianna Yoder, Devonee Gnagey, Lexi Smithers, Mikel Good, Kennedy Henry, Reagan Boyce, and Kendal Boyce

Prepared Public Speaking Prepared Public Speaking is the highest level of developing a 6-8 minute speech about a topic related to agriculture, food and natural resources. Emily Smith composed a speech titled: Xenotransplantation Successes. She found her inspiration from a man named David Bennett who was the first human who successfully received a heart transplant from a GAL Safe pig that was genetically modified not to express the gene that contains alpha gal sugar. This transplant is state of the art in the medical and agriculture community. Emily placed 4th in the state with this speech. Congratulations!

Letter From the President The Laker FFA Chapter has had the opportunity to see our students follow our motto, “Excellence Is Expected” yet again this year.Whether it was a new member with an eager attitude of learning, or a returning competitor, one thing is for sure- Laker FFA was excited to return to in person contests this year. We started out our year in the fall with the annual soil judging contest in October where we had a team place 1st in the county, followed by Broiler Contest and National Convention in November, where we were proud to have an Agricultural Communications team ranked Silver nationally. During the winter, we prepared for leadership contests, where we saw many successes. Recently, we attended State Convention on MSU campus, and saw excellent results regarding those leadership contests. Laker FFA was proud to have many members receive their Outstanding Junior and State Degrees, and was proud to have the state runner-up agricultural issues team, fourth in the state parliamentary procedure team, fourth in the state junior high conduct of meetings team, fourth in

the state public speaker, Emily Smith, and third in the state greenhand conduct of meetings team. We are very proud of all the great things our members have accomplished over the year, and we look forward to hearing more successful results at the career development skills contest in April, as well as reflecting on every member’s success at our annual spring banquet in May. As we look forward to rounding out our year, we would also like to send a special thank you to our Advisor, Mrs. Haley Cucinello, and her assistant, Mrs. Carla Gnagey. None of our success would’ve been possible without your many hours of dedication to our chapter. We would also like to thank our community for their continued support of the Laker FFA. Sincerely, Peyton Kuhn Laker FFA President

Delegates

WLC Scholarship

Emily Smith was selected as the Past State Officer Organization scholarship recipient. This scholarship will allow her to travel to our nation’s capitol in the month of June to be immersed in a service learning experience at the Washington Leadership Conference. Students from across the nation join together to put together service projects to impact their immediate community. Congratulations Emily on this scholarship and experience!

Every year, a select few students are chosen to represent the Laker FFA Chapter in a delegate voting process. Delegates this year voted on bylaw changes to the Michigan FFA Board of Directors, experienced a house session at our state’s capitol, and recognized 2 House of Representatives with their Honorary Michigan FFA Degree. On Friday, they listened to the speeches of the state officer candidates, then voted to install the 2022-2023 State FFA Officer team. This year, Alivia Lubeski, Olivia Seley and Erin McArdle represented the Laker FFA as delegates at the State FFA Convention.
