BAD AXE HATCHETS

Continued resurgence for Hatchet Football in 2021 By Tom Greene Staff Writer In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a lot of uncertainty amongst the fall sports seasons. With the Hatchets, a new football coach in 2020 was also amongst the uncertainty. However, coach Kal Pokley guided the Hatchets to a share of the Greater Thumb West title that season, and the story was the same in the 2021 season. The Hatchets finished 7-2 in the regular season, sharing the Greater Thumb West title with Laker and Reese. The Hatchets would go on to lose to Hemlock in the opening round of the playoffs, 20-12, but it was a successful season as the Hatchets won a second consecutive share of the Greater Thumb West. Griffin Meinhold made the Thumb Sportswriters Association first team at-large,

Sam Hass made second team offensive line, Jake MacPhee made first team defensive linebacker and Keaton Braun made second team defensive back. The volleyball team finished third in Greater Thumb West play, finishing 9-3, and losing to Unionville-Sebewaing Area Schools in the district semifinals. Kate Clancy made the Greater Thumb West All-Conference first team, Sophie Shuart and Sarah Howard made second team, and Haley Newland and Callie Engler were honorable mentions. Clancy also made the Thumb Sportswriters Association second team. The soccer team once again had a memorable season. The Hatchets finished undefeated at 11-0 in the Greater Thumb Conference,

defeated Midland Calvary Baptist to win their fourth consecutive district title, and advanced to the regional final before losing to Clarkston Everest Collegiate, 2-0. Keeper Brett Campbell made the Greater Thumb Conference All-Conference first team. Also making first team were midfielders Bradley Howard, Aaron Sowles, Matt Osentoski, Noah Kervin and forward Connor Etzel. Defender Tate Gordon made the second team. Forward Matt Galarno was an honorable mention, as well as defenders Lucas McMinn, Cordell Pritch and Chase Sosnoski. The Hatchet fall teams look forward to 2022 in search of more championships to add to their resume.

It was tough sledding for Caseville football this season. The team finished 0-9, but it was not without highlights from Nathan Feltner, who made the Thumb Sportswriters Association eight-player first team athlete. He had 846 all-purpose yards and had 61 total tackles on defense. Feltner and Andrew Bond led the way on defense, as Bond had 66 total tackles. The volleyball team had memorable wins over Akron-Fairgrove twice, Carsonville-Port Sanilac and Mayville on breast cancer awareness night. However, their playoff run was short as they lost in straight sets to Ubly in the opening round. The Lady Bearcats won the regional title on their playoff run. Both teams look forward to the 2022 season, in hopes of more success.

UBLY BEARCATS

Ubly football and volleyball win third straight regional titles By Tom Greene Staff Writer The Ubly Bearcats saw successful seasons across the board in the fall. The football team advanced to the state semifinals after a 9-0 regular season and three playoff wins. While they may have fallen short to Beal City in the state semifinal, 12-7, they did not fall short in the minds of the players, coaches, and the Ubly community.
