Prepared Public Speaking Prepared Public Speaking is the highest level of developing a 6-8 minute speech about a topic related to agriculture, food and natural resources. Emily Smith composed a speech about the alphagal sugar gene found in swine and their revolutionary research to remove that gene to allow individuals with AGS to consume red meat products, but specifically pork. Emily was named the state Runner-Up in this contest. Congratulations!

State Office Being nominated into state office is one of the highest accomplishments one can receive in the FFA organization. Laker FFA added their 33rd Michigan FFA State Officer to the list of distinguished individuals. Leah Irion was elected as the 2021-2022 Michigan FFA Region III State Vice President!

Letter From the President As everyone knows, this was not a traditional year. Schools had to transition in and out of virtual learning, extra safety precautions were put into place, and COVID made everything increasingly more difficult. This can be hard on everyone, and especially in an FFA chapter that deeply values tradition. Even at the virtual 93rd Michigan FFA state convention, the Laker FFA upheld the tradition of excellence. At this convention, we had teams compete in junior high conduct of meetings, greenhand conduct of meetings, parliamentary procedure, prepared public speaking, and agricultural issues. Laker leadership teams competed and excelled at the all virtual competitions at district, regional and state levels, and all placed in the top 5 at states! Even when faced with last minute challenges like teammates having to quarantine, each team rolled with the punches and adapted. I could not be more proud of everyone that competed this year, and I know that the Laker FFA legacy is safe in their hands. Another tradition was fulfilled this year, and that is a member of the Laker FFA being chosen to serve on the State Officer team! Leah Irion, our chapter co-vice president, was selected as the Region III State Vice President for

the Michigan FFA 20212022 State Officer Team! Congratulations, and good luck in your next year of service. The entire Laker FFA chapter is excited to see your success. You will do great things, but never forget where you came from! Congrats to Leah Irion and all the other teams that competed this year! Lastly, we could not have had this success without the dedication of our advisor, Mrs. Haley Cucinello, the Laker FFA secretary, Mrs. Carla Gnagey, and numerous community members and alumni. We thank all of you for taking the time to invest in us and help us grow to our full potential. The chapter is a better place because of you! Congratulations again to all of our leadership teams, outstanding juniors, state degree recipients, and our new state officer!

Job Interview The purpose of the job interview contest is to stimulate interest and acquaint students with the employment procedures they will face when applying for a job and to allow students to demonstrate oral and written communications. Students craft a resume and cover letter, fill out a job application, and engage in a 15 minute job interview. Leah Irion advanced to that state Semi Final round, where she placed 8th in the state.

Delegates Every year, a select few students are chosen to represent the Laker FFA Chapter in a delegate voting process. This year was slightly different with a virtual convention, but nonetheless an important role at convention. They listened to the speeches of the state officer candidate elects and voted to install the 2021-2022 State FFA Officer team. This year, Peton Kuhn, Olivia Seley and Erin McArdle represented the Laker FFA as delegates at the virtual State FFA Convention.
