Letter from Class President What a year it has been! We have had so many ups and downs, in and outs, but we have grown, grown to a place of learning to adapt to the unknown. Together we made it through a lot of “Firsts”. We’ve also made it through a lot of “last firsts”. Even though we missed out on sporting events, school activities, pep assemblies, we’ve gained so much through this process. We now know we can adapt to change. People say the world is constantly changing, but when you are forced to change and adapt to the new normal on such a quick basis, it seems a little easier - easier to think that we are ready for next year. We are ready for our move to college, to the
workforce, or to whatever your future has in store because we learned to be flexible and to make the best of a bad situation. Whether we become doctors, lawyers, welders, or nurses, we know one thing is for sure: the Class of 2021 has already made history. Keep moving forward, changing, and adapting. Together we can make a difference. As we get closer to graduation, let’s try to pay more attention to the beginnings rather than the endings. Don’t cry because it’s over; be happy because it happened. Ellee Weitenberner, Senior Class President

Laker High School Class of 2021 Hannah Penfold – Laker High School Valedicatorian
Rachael Schember – Laker High School Salutatorian
At some point, every high school graduate has to answer one daunting question: what do I do now? High school may be over, but life still goes on. For me, the decision was easy. I am going to attend Michigan State University. My high school has really helped me be able to confidently make that decision to move on to the next step of my life. Through programs like dual enrollment and all the extracurricular activities, I feel prepared and ready to continue my academic journey.
Hello Readers of Huron Daily Tribune,
Dual enrollment through MidMichigan Community College has been a tremendous help in beginning my transition into college. Because Lakers provided this opportunity, I feel confident that next year, my transition into college level academics will be smooth. I also developed strong time and stress management skills, as completing college credits on

top of high school courses and extracurricular activities is a lot to handle. Overall, dual enrollment has been a huge help. The amount of extracurricular options Lakers provides is amazing. I have been involved in many different clubs, sports, and leadership roles throughout my time in high school. This not only taught me how to be a part of a team, but it developed my communication skills, leadership abilities, and gave me a sense of belonging. I encourage everyone to be a part of as many extracurricular activities as you can. Lakers has many different clubs and activities that a student can participate in, so that everyone can feel like they are a part of something. I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life, and I know that my school has done everything in its power to help prepare me for success.
Alicia S. Backes Kennedy Bolda
My name is Rachel Schember and I am the salutatorian of Lakers Graduating Class of 2021. Seeing as I have spent my entire academic career attending Lakers, it was almost inevitable that my life posthigh school would be heavily influenced by the education and experiences I have gained during my time here, but I never could have imagined how much Lakers has prepared me for college and beyond. Through the amazing educators we have at Lakers, I have gained a passion for learning that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. They truly have a passion for their students and for building lifelong skills that are needed to succeed, such as collaboration, communication, and a strong work ethic. They always lead by example
which we adopt unknowingly into our own lives. The teacher that has most influenced me and prepared me for college life is my Chemistry/Forensics teacher and Science Olympiad coach, Mrs. Hasselschwert. Her tangible love for science helped me discover my own passion for science and inspired my decision to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. Even though she is now retired, she continues to stay in contact with her students and offers some of the best advice when it comes to college and life in general. Aside from the educators, Lakers has prepared me for life beyond high school by offering one of the best scholarships a high school student can receive: being able to dual enroll through Mid Michigan College, which allows me to gain college credits while I am in high school.

USA High School Class of 2021 High school is four years of your life that you will never get back. The friendships, memories, and life-long experiences that are made durin ghtese four years are irreplaceable. Going to school every day to sit in class and learn is not the only thing high school has to offer, being a part of something bigger, such as a team, the band, an organization, or a club makes high school. The extra events of high school are where some of the best memories are made.
The class of 2021 has been fortunate to have excellent success in athletics for both males and females. This success has not been give to USA athletes, they have had to earn it. The start of much of that success begins with Mr. V and our strength and conditioning program. Without the dedication of our coaches and community, USA athletics would be average. These events bring together the student body and community to show support for the teams and our

amazing USA band. Our band doesn’t only play for athletic events, they also compete at the local and state level. They have been very successful in these competitions, and have also set a standard for upcoming patriots. As the Class of 2021 begins to look back on the past four years, we remember some events that stood out to us. May Day freshmen year, we all competed in a Fortnite-style battle. This event included the whole shool and got everyone involved and out of
the typical classroom for the day. We also had pep assemblies on Fridays of homecoming and coming home as a kickstart to the events of the evening. The best part of these events was that we went undefeated in musical chairs all through high school. Looking back on the memories that were made, we all took some time to appreciate the normal years we had. Senior year was different in all aspects, but the memories that we made will never be forgotten.
