UNIONVILLE-SEBEWAING AREA PATRIOTS The USA Patriot softball team made good on a promise to itself and the seniors of 2020 who never got the chance to defend their 2019 Division 4 state championship. When USA pitcher Brynn Polega recorded her 19th and final strikeout in East Lansing on June 19, it served as a bittersweet coda to the preceding 15 months, a period during which not only prep athletes but people across the planet saw their dreams dashed and lives upended. Life, and that state championship trophy, had returned to the place they were supposed to be. The Patriots, helmed by coach Isaiah Gainforth, were a team on mission in 2021, picking up momentum as the spring season progressed and winning a total of 40 games. Their overall record of 40-3 included a 36-game winning streak. USA opened the postseason on June 4 with a victory over Owendale-Gagetown and methodically made its way to a district and regional championship, dispatching opponents like Kingston, Harbor Beach and Allen Park Cabrini. Their final opponent, the Rudyard Bulldogs, were making their first-ever championship game appearance. The Patriots would not be denied, however, and the Bulldogs would have frontrow seats to record-setting performances by Polega and USA’s hitters. Polega smashed the Michigan High School Athletics Association record for strikeouts in a championship game, leading the Patriots to their second straight Division 4 softball title on Saturday at Michigan State University in East Lansing. The All-State senior struck out 19 as USA defeated Rudyard, 14-1. USA’s batters also set a record for hits in a title game with 20. The previous record of 17 was held by Millington (2019) and Jenison (1988). The USA track and field teams distinguished themselves at the Division 4 finals in Hudsonville, Unionville-Sebewaing Area’s
Bentley Alderson claimed the D4 state championship in the 1600 meters, finishing with a time of 4:23.75. Alderson also finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:01.84. Caron Holland earned a bronze medal in the 200 meters, Jacob Vanhove placed fourth in the 400 meters, Alderson won silver and Dirk Rierson placed seventh in the 800 meters. Alderson claimed gold and Ty Pavilchek earned silver in the 1600 meters, Ethan Liken took home bronze in the 300-meter hurdles. The team of Conner Gettel, Bryce Langmaid, Vanhove and Holland placed fifth in the 800-meter relay and the team of Alderson, Holland, Adam Maust and Vanhove earned the bronze medal in the 1600-meter relay. Nimtz finished seventh in the shot put but claimed the gold medal in the discus. Justin Hunt finished fourth in the discus. Laingmaid won bronze in the pole vault, and Holland also won bronze in the long jump. Hunter Wolfe and Sam Beagle finished ninth and tenth in the long jump, respectively. In the girls events, Taylin Sutherland finished fifth in the 400 meters, Olivia Peter placed seventh in the 800 meters and Emmeline Kotenko finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. The team of Sutherland, Olivia Tomlinson, Rhiannon Varin and Kotenko claimed the bronze in the 400-meter relay, the team of Madilyn Horton, Peter, Sutherland and Tomlinson placed fourth in the 1600-meter relay. Varin finished fourth in the high jump, and Sutherland took silver in the long jump. The baseball team and girls soccer squad fell short of their own goals of deep playoff runs but look forward to the promise of the 20212022 season.
