Huron Community Fair returns for 153rd year Scott Nunn
scott.nunn@hearstnp.com
Heartbreak has turned to celebration as the Huron Community Fair presses forward with its 153rd year. The seven-day annual event, like virtually everything else in the state, was canceled last year due to the pandemic. Fairboard President Clark Brock said this year’s return is cause for celebration. “We are having a fair this year,” Brock said. “That is what I am excited about. I am excited that we get to have all the kids back with their projects and exhibits and everyone gets to come have a good time.” Brock said harness racing returns after a several year hiatus. “We have not had it for a number of years,” Brock said. “When casinos started gaining momentum, harness race horsing left the state of Michigan because there was no money to be had. The last time we had harness racing here was around eight years ago.”

Brock said the number of horses and races continued to dwindle, so the fair board made the difficult decision to get rid of it. However, in recent years harness racing popularity has returned and Brock said the fair saw an opportunity to bring the racing back and enjoy some nostalgia.
Brock said another new item at the fair this year is racing pigs, which will perform three times daily Tuesday through Friday.
“People enjoy it,” Brock said. “It is back to the old time fair. It is a free event and is a fun way to kick off the fair.”
Throughout the week the fair will feature the traditional carnival and midway with T.J. Schmidt & Company.
The fair will also feature its annual grandstand events.
ny and flag raising.
Some of Monday’s events include the rabbit show, horse show, silent “We have the truck races, demo derby, rodeo and auction, sheep show, and tractor pulls,” Brock said. and is topped off with the demo derby at 7 p.m. Thursday features the beef show, goat show and the Super Kicker Rodeo in the evening. Thursday is also the Special Needs Kids Event, when the fair sets aside time for special needs children and their families to experience the fair. Friday’s events are the junior livestock auctions and the redneck truck race in the grandstands.
Saturday is the small livestock auctions, antique tractor show, showmanship contests and the tractor pull. Brock said this year’s fair book is online due to the pandemic. “There wasn’t enough time to put a fair book to print,” Brock said. Harness racing returns to Huron Community Fair Mary Drier For the Tribune For the first time in several years, harness racing will be back this year during the 153rd Huron Community Fair that runs August 1-7.

Redneck Truck Races are Friday night feature Mary Drier For the Tribune
The $4,000 prize purse is paid out to drivers who participate in the race.
More than $4,000 in prize money will be paid out during one of the Huron Community Fair’s fan-favorite events — the Redneck Truck Races. “The trucks for the redneck race have to be a 1989 or older farm grain truck,” said event coordinator Kevin Langely. “They will be racing around the oval race track. It will be kind of like a NASAR Car race but with old farm trucks that have a box on the back to haul grain. We hope to have 18 to 20 trucks participate and race in heats until it gets down to the final four or six trucks for the grand prize. “It’s a little different kind of race and something most farms in
“Everyone will get a little piece of the pie in pay outs,” Langley said. “There is a $25 entry fee per truck to pre-register. It will cost an extra $50 to register the day of the race.” To register, call or text 989-550-4949. According to Langley, some of the details are still being worked out on the payout for the races and if there will be trophies given also. “The laps will be counted and the fastest trucks around the track will be the winners and keep moving on up in the
races,” he said. “The races will go until it gets down to the final four or six trucks. They will race for first place.”
The rules for the race are on the Huron County Fair’s website https:// www.huroncommunityfair.com. Tickets for adults are $10, and $5 for children ages six to 11.

Wallace Stone 4-H Ambassadors program Co. named on hold post COVID mandates Friends of Huron Community Fair Paige Withey For the Tribune
Mary Drier For the Tribune Longtime Huron County business Wallace Stone Company in Bay Port has been named a Friend of the Huron Community Fair. Friends are recognized for efforts benefiting the fair, said Huron County Fair President Clark Brock. “The Wallace Stone Company for many years have donated stone and materials for the fair’s roadways and any other material for fair, and the gravel for around the fairgrounds,” said Brock. “They are very good at helping us with whatever we need.” The stone company that is just outside of Bay Port donated the materials for the fair to put in a new driveway last year. “They give us top quality material so it is easier to get around the fairgrounds,” he said. “They have been very supportive of us. The company has helped us out for the last 10 to 12
years.” The Wallace Stone Company Quarry at 8785 Ribble Rd., started operating in the late 1800s. It has been producing quality aggregates and stone products since that time. “We have donated some materials that helped with the fair’s infrastructure,” said the quarry’s plant Manager Eric Gardy before he had to take another call. Brock noted the fair board is every grateful for the quarry’s support. “They have helped the fair a lot,” Brock said. “They have donated a lot. What they have given us has been substantial.” “At the quarry, they have several different stone products for yard work or driveways and like that have helped us,” he continued. Editor’s Note: Two other groups were also named Friends of the Fair. The Tribune will have stories on those individuals in a later issue of the paper.
Due to the uncertainties and unpredictable timeline that accompanied the coronavirus pandemic over the last year, 4-H ambassadors for the 2020-21 season will not be announced at the Huron County fair this year. While everyone is happy to see the fair back in town, Huron County 4-H Program Coordinator Patricia Errer said there was not enough time for kids to prepare for the program this year. “For a long time, we weren’t sure when faceto-face programs would be available again,” said
Errer. “We have only recently been able to restart programs with direct contact, everything else had been limited to Zoom meetings and those connections weren’t always reliable.” “It has been a sad year,” she added. “Without active 4-H programs, students were unable to take part in community service and meetings as usual.”
With state mandates and restrictions changing so rapidly in the last couple of months, there was simply no time to coordinate activities and opportunities for 4-H members. The 4-H community has been living in a state of limbo, Errer said.
2021 marks the second year the ambassador program was unable to be held due to the pandemic. Pictured are the Cloverbud ambassador candidates from 2019. (Courtesy Photo)
In 2019, more than 10 participants took place in the Huron County 4-H ambassador interviews, which included a dinner at the Huron Expo Center. “I am happy to say that
Serving you from 6 locations:
as of right now, our 4-H activities are back faceto-face and we hope that our ambassador program will be up and running as usual for the 2021-22 year,” Errer said. “We will just have to wait and see.”
