Annual Pumpkin Festival brings fall spirit, activities to Caseville TERESA HOMSI For The Tribune One day of trick-or-treating just doesn’t do Halloween justice. At least, that’s what the Caseville Chamber of Commerce states on its website announcing the annual Pumpkin Festival. The 2021 Pumpkin Festival will return for the Sept. 18-19 weekend — one week earlier than in previous years. Event coordinator and co-owner of Keepsakes Jennifer Ruth said the family-oriented festival is meant to be something kids and parents can enjoy together. Festival highlights include the lighted parade, in which attendees can adorn themselves, their cars, tractors, bikes or floats in lights and pumpkin-themed decorations. The parade will start Saturday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. on the corner of Michigan Street and M-25. Another coveted event is the annual pumpkin roll at the Caseville County Park on Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. This event is sponsored by the Caseville Fire Department and Independent Bank, which will give away two bicycles to

Scarecrow building in the Caseville City Park will go from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Straw, accessories and clothes will be provided by the Caseville Chamber of Commerce for

$15 for a large scarecrow and $10 for a small. New events this year include a hotdog eating contest, cornhole tournament and fundraiser, various kids’ games and a farmer’s market. Other favorites like music in the park, the candy

treasure hunt, bale rolling, face-painting, pumpkin decorating and the kids pumpkin parade are all set to return to Caseville. Although some events and participants still need to be confirmed, Ruth said the schedule will be finalized

within the next week and updated on the Caseville Chamber of Commerce website. “We’re hoping for a good year because the festival’s a week early and hopefully people realize that,” Ruth said. “I’m hoping the weather will be nice and sunny, and there will be a lot of people in town who will stick around and come back from the Pumpkin Fest for two full days of fun and family activities that the kids can participate in.” Ruth said she’s always looking for volunteers to help the festival go smoothly. People who are interested in volunteering can contact Keepsakes at 989-856-3006, reach out the Chamber of Commerce or show up “dayof” at the Village Memorial Park for volunteer opportunities. The Pumpkin Festival is put on every year by Keepsakes in Caseville in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce. Elkton Autumn Fest returns after two-year hiatus MARK BIRDSALL mark.birdsall@hearstnp.com Just like every other summer festival in 2020, the annual Elkton Autumn Fest was canceled due to the pandemic. The loss of the annual event, which traditionally takes place Labor Day weekend, was a blow to the entire community. There will be no cancellation in 2021. This year, festival will take place from Friday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 5, and feature everything from a memorial dog walk to a performance by an ‘80s tribute band. Also planned for 2021 is a 5K walk/run. The festival is centered around family-friendly activities, including a community church service, free kids inflatables, a chicken barbecue, a classic car show, a bocce ball tournament and truck and tractor pulls. For the grownups, there’s the Saturday night entertainment tent, where they’ll find

food and beverages as well as performances by three musical acts, including headliner Sunset BLVD, and ‘80s tribute band. Sandy Fritz, one of the organizers of the festival, said the community board is very pleased this year’s Autumn Fest will take place and they’ve been working hard to get everything lined up in time for Labor Day weekend. Planning for the festival begins several months in advance and it wasn’t a sure thing it would take place this year. “We’re ecstatic,” Fritz said. “Because of COVID, everything’s been rush, rush, rush, but we’re having the full schedule we’ve had in the past. Everybody who’s been involved in the past is wanting to be involved again. It’s been going gangbusters.” Schedule of events: Friday, Sept. 3 • 2021 Ron Forster Memorial Dog Walk

The Thumb Octagon Barn and surrounding buildings will hold Fall Family Days once again this year, after canceling last year due to COVID-19. Exhibits will show how agricultural life was over 100 years ago. (Tribune File Photo)

Fall Family Days taking residents on a nostalgic farm trip Octagon barn shows what farming was like in early 1900s ROBERT CREENAN robert.creenan@hearst.com Fall Family Days will return to the Thumb Octagon Barn Agricultural Museum for its 25th year after taking last year off, giving residents a glimpse of what agricultural life in the Thumb was like at the turn of the 20th Century. The grounds outside of Gagetown will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 and 12. All the buildings on the museum’s property will be open for people to view, including: • A 114-year-old sawmill with demonstrations on sawing lumber • A veneer mill • A sugar shack with demonstrations on boiling maple syrup and a history of the industry • A blacksmith shop, with a smithy giving demonstrations on the blacksmithing process

• An operational apple cider mill • A grist mill • A one room schoolhouse and accompanying museum on schoolhouses in the Upper Thumb • A period-appropriate elevator • The Octagon Barn • A powerhouse that makes electricity • The main farmhouse, with refurbishing work done to have the inside period appropriate Dennis Anderson, acting president for the Octagon Barn Museum, said that this will be the first Fall Family Days of the newly refurbished barn, with volunteers carrying out the refurbishing work over the last three years. “We completely refurbished the windows and roof,” Anderson said. “We redid all the siding on the barn.” For a normal year, Anderson said that Thumb Family Days brings in around 15,000 guests, with a high mark of around 18,000 guests, and roughly 400 volunteers taking part as presenters, making food,

taking care of the grounds, and running parking lot shuttles. He said organizers are looking to have another good festival this year, with a lot of people attending both days of an open house in July. “From every indication we see from events in the area, we’ll have a good turnout this year,” Anderson said. “Maybe more because people were locked up inside for so long and want to get out.” A response team the museum’s board put together for dealing with the pandemic is still in place, with a COVID toolbox they created for the museum to adapt to any changes if needed. They want to be careful places are not overcrowded and make sure people are comfortable on the grounds. “If additional protocols are added, like signage, we already have it made up,” Anderson said. “There might a situation where we have one-way traffic. In one door and out the other. Should there be any changes in protocol, we feel we’re ready for that and we’ll respond to it.”

Elkton Trunk-Or-Treat favorite haunt of cool goblins and ghouls MARK BIRDSALL mark.birdsall@hearstnp.com We all loved Halloween when we were kids – the costumes, the candy, Charlie Brown on TV. There were parties at school, decorations all over the house, and then there was the big night when we hit the streets to go trick-or-treating. The excitement carried us the first few blocks, as the miniature Snickers bars and peanut butter kisses begin to fill the pillowcases and pumpkin-shaped pails we brought with us to collect our haul. But since it was October, the night be a chilly or damp one, and our desire for candy may have kept us out just a little too long as we pushed to the next block. Pretty soon, our feet were tired and we just wanted to

go home. Well, stop ghoulin’ around and head to Elkton this Halloween for the return of the town’s annual Trunk-OrTreat event. You’ll save yourself and your little goblins some shoe leather and still have a great time. For the Trunk-Or-Treat event, Elkton closes off Main Street at 5 p.m. for a oneof-a kind trick-or-treating experience from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 pm. The street will be blocked off prior to the start of trick-or-treating, and families can park their cars or pickups on Main Street, decorate around their vehicle and hand out candy. Everyone is invited to trick-or-treat or hand out candy. Those wishing to give out candy should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the event to park their vehi-

cles before the barricades are moved into the street. The Huron Youth Center and Elkton Civic Center will be open for families that want to decorate and set up at a table. Those who want to decorate tables can get access to the center the day before the event to do their decorating. Kurt Damrow of the Elkton Lions Club said TrunkOr-Treat has been growing steadily in popularity since it began several years ago, and it provides a great option for families who live in more rural areas where trick-or-treating isn’t practical. “It’s a lot easier for the families, especially with smaller kids,” Damrow said. Elkton Trunk-Or-Treat will take place on Sunday, Oct. 31, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Port Austin Chamber of Commerce will bring back the village’s Carfest in late September, where classic cars will be displayed similar to other car shows held in Huron County. (Tribune File Photo)

Port Austin planning return of Carfest Classic car show to take place in late September ROBERT CREENAN robert.creenan@hearst.com An old favorite event will be making its return to Port Austin later in September. The Port Austin Carfest will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 25 in the parking lot next to the old gymnasium at 8861 Line Street. Steve Penn, a trustee with the Port Austin Chamber of Commerce which is sponsoring the event, said there previously was a car show years ago that was popular among classic car owners and the people who lived in the area. It was held along Lake Street and despite its

popularity, the organizers eventually could not put it on anymore. “The people who had sponsored it and put it together got older and they didn’t want to do it anymore, so it fell by the wayside,” Penn said. The chamber of commerce has been trying to put on events in Port Austin that are not just during the heart of the summer, since lots of tourists come there and they want to stretch the summer season into when kids start going back to school. This lead the chamber to resurrect this car show. The show will not feature any judged competitions, as Penn described it more as an opportunity for like-minded people to get together and

have an easygoing way to spend an afternoon. He said that if someone does have a classic car, they likely have friends who are classic car owners as well. “If you have an antique car or classic truck, you’re welcome to bring it,” Penn said. “Let everybody see what you got.” A four-piece band will be playing during the show in a tent at the village green, where the Port Austin Farmer’s Market is normally held. For classic car owners to show off what they have collected, registration costs $15. The first 100 people that register are planned to get a dash plaque. Penn said that if this show has a decent turnout, it will likely continue in the future.

They are natural areas in need of protection and management for the ecological benefits they provide to people and the environment. They are open to the public for enjoyment, recreation and education.

CHARITY ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

Charity Island Lighthouse was established in 1857, and currently is privately owned. It stands in ruins at the northwest tip of Big Charity Island. Visit www.charityisland.net for more information.

HARBOR BEACH LIGHTHOUSE

The Harbor Beach Lighthouse is located at the end of the north breakwater entrance to the harbor of refuge. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society has been working with city officials to preserve the historic landmark. Port Austin Reef Light is located in Lake Huron, 2 1/2 miles north of the Village of Port Austin. Construction was completed in 1878.

POINTE AUX BARQUES LIGHTHOUSE

The original Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse was constructed of stone taken from the shore of Lake Huron in 1848. The keeper’s house and separate tower were located on a three acre clearing hacked out of the dense wilderness. By 1857, the ravages of shoreline weather and a fire in the interior of the house created the need for a new structure. The new keeper’s house and attached 89-foot tower were built of the finest brick available. The light is still an active aid to navigation, making Pointe aux Barques one of the oldest continuously operating Lights on the Great Lakes. In 1875, a Class A lifesaving station was constructed 300 yards south of the lighthouse. It was the first lifesaving station opened on the Great Lakes. The 62 year history of the station credits over 200 rescues to this station and its brave crews. The Thumb Bottomland Preserve surrounding Pointe aux Barques contains 105 known wrecks, reflecting the danger posed by shoals surrounding Pointe aux Barques. The Pointe aux Barques keeper’s house and tower have been completely restored and contain historical artifacts from a bygone era. The museum is open to the public free of charge and donations are appreciated to help fund the society’s projects. The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse is located six miles north of Port Hope off M-25 on Lighthouse Road in Lighthouse County Park. Visit www.pointeauxbarqueslighthouse.org or call Bill Bonner at 989-428-3035 for more information.
