Bad Axe Class of 2022 Bad Axe Schools Class of 2022 Valedictorian Stamping his NPS Passport
Fledgling Author is Bad Axe High School Class of 2022 Salutatorian
Bad Axe, MI -- Bad Axe Schools Class of 2022 Valedictorian Alex Castle has many goals, but one goal stands out as a lifetime adventure: “My parents introduced me to camping and hiking, which inspired me to want to camp across the country in the future. I’d like to visit every national park in the U.S. because natural beauty is unparalleled,” states Castle, son of Bill and Jill Castle. His favorite parks so far can be found in Utah. “Almost every moment that I have spent in the desert of Utah is my favorite. There is nothing like the red cliffs and canyons, fresh air, and silent calmness there.” Perhaps that is why he follows the advice of Edward Abbey in his book Desert Solitaire: “All things excellent are as difficult as they are rare.” Castle explains, “When I have a tough time with my work, I think about this quote to remind myself that my hard work will turn me towards excellence.” Excellence has definitely been demonstrated by this young man.
Bad Axe, MI -- Haley Newland, Bad Axe High School Class of 2022 Salutatorian, dreams of writing and publishing a book. “I have loved books ever since I was younger, and so many books have really impacted my life. It would be a dream to have my own book out in the world,” says Newland, daughter of Greg and Melissa Newland. To the underclassmen, she stresses, ”Don’t let anyone tell you you cannot do it.” Newland’s high school career proves that she took this motivational advice to heart. This fledgling author is well-rounded in academics, athletics, and community service.
“My parents are probably my biggest influences. They have not only taught me to be hardworking and reliable, but they have also supported my aspirations and accomplishments.” These accomplishments include Outstanding Academic Student awards in history, science, math, English, and Spanish as well as All-A Honor Roll for four straight years. As a member of the concert band, Castle earned Tri-County Honors Band member four years in a row. As a member of the Bad Axe Marching Band, he served as section leader and recently as drum major. Castle, a three-time Citizen of the Month recipient, believes in community service. As a member of the Bad Axe High School National Honor Society and the Rotary Interact Club, Castle has raised awareness and funds for polio and C/AN council activities, participated in youth programs, and cleaned our environment. These activities are balanced through his extracurricular activities. as well. A medalist on the track team, a member of the league champion quiz bowl team, a member of the drama department’s pit band, and recipient of the Judge’s Award, Design Award (twice), Tournament Champion, and CREATE US Open competitor in Robotics were all earned during his high school career. Castle’s advice to underclassmen is to “Work hard because hard work is a valuable virtue.” He states the things he values are those he earned. “I am the proudest of having the opportunity to lead the marching band through the position of drum major, getting to compete at the U.S. Open Competition for robotics, having my first photos published in the Huron County Directory, and earning the position of the Class of 2022 Valedictorian of Bad Axe.” This coming fall, Castle will be attending Kettering University to study mechanical engineering – and planning his next National Park Service adventure.
As a scholar, Newland has garnered Outstanding Student Awards in English, math, social studies, science, and the arts. An M.H.S.A.A. Scholar-Athlete Award Finalist, she is a four-year All-A honor roll member who believes strongly in community service. That belief has led her to join Rotary Interact, Student Council, National Honors Society, and the Huron County Youth Advisory Committee. Her time and dedication to these organizations have helped clean up the environment, provide Christmas presents to children, raise money and awareness for polio and C/AN council activities, promote school spirit and activities, foster well-being in the elderly, and create and fund programs for Huron County schools and youth programs. While academics have been an important part of Newland’s life, extracurriculars have been impactful as well, and it is in this arena Newland finds her influence. “My dad has been a huge influence on my life. He has coached me in softball since I was younger and has always pushed me to do my best. He is my number one fan, and I have learned so much from him. I’m glad I’ve had such a great dad to look up to and push me to be a better version of myself.” This push and Newland’s hard work have earned her All-District and All-Conference honors in volleyball, basketball, and softball as well as the position of captain of the Huron County Thunder Softball travel team in 2021. Some of her favorite memories – winning basketball districts in 2020, softball districts in 2021, and hitting and pitching records in softball – have been earned on those playing fields. Having spent two years of her high school career dealing with the academic and extracurricular interruptions of COVID, Newland says she believes in her personal motto of “Forget the last play and move on to the next. It started out as something I applied to sports, but as time went on, I realized how applicable it is to life in general. It helps me not get lost in past mistakes and keep moving forward.” Newland will be carrying that can-do attitude to the University of Michigan to study English – and begin writing that best seller.

Valedictorian Letter: I was anxious and shy as a freshman and unsure of what I wanted to do after high school. These problems faded as I progressed through high school because I realized what person I wanted to be and what I should do after graduation. My high school experience has shaped me into who I am today and whom I want to be through academics and extracurriculars. When I started high school, I knew that I wanted to do well in school, so I took on the opportunities for greatness that the school provided for me. Two of those opportunities that I took advantage of were advanced placement (AP) and dual-enrollment classes. I chose to do both, which taught me some valuable skills and new information. AP classes allowed me to start understanding college-level material while still having a teacher I knew. Dual-enrollment classes enabled me to take courses at Saint Clair County Community College to learn the ins and outs of college courses and explore my interests by choosing subjects out of many options. These challenging classes taught me time management, dedication, and the importance of hard work. In addition to the advanced classes offered, the school has great teachers dedicated to their students, which has helped prepare me. A substantial part of coming out of my shell and gaining confidence was participation in extracurriculars. By being a part of soccer, basketball, and volleyball, I learned how to
Salutatorian Letter: make friends with people of different grades and different friend groups. Sports allowed me to branch out and make friendships with new people. During my freshman year, I was quiet during basketball practice. A senior at the time had decided to try to talk to me; Megan Pawlowski was this senior who encouraged me to talk more and became friends with me, which helped me be more confident in basketball and later in the spring during soccer. My coaches have all been encouraging and helpful, but one coach has helped me become who I am and taught me life skills and qualities. This coach is Mr. Tamlyn. He has always been inspiring inside and outside of basketball. He has put his entire heart into his players. He has inspired me to have fun while working hard. Mr. Tamlyn has been an inspiration in my life and taught me how to be great. Extracurriculars have taught me teamwork skills, how to have fun while being dedicated, and how to make friends. High school has left me with skills, memories, and experiences that have influenced who I am and will help me with my future education and career. The college-level class opportunities have taught me academic skills and challenged me. Participating in many extracurriculars, such as sports and the National Honor Society, has taught me to work well with others and be more social and confident. High school has prepared me for starting college and finding who I want to be.
High school contains the years of everyone’s life that we all have vivid memories of, whether that be positive or negative, they are all what you make of them. I have made my journey with the intention of doing great things and I think that there are many people who have helped prepare me for the next step in life. From school to sports, Harbor Beach has amazing leaders and teachers across the board but amongst the many there are a few that specifically made a major impact on my high school success and what is next to come. Harbor Beach qualified me for a life after high school, one that includes the formidable task of college. Institutionally, the classes I took prepared me for the rigorous coursework required for a college degree. I took both AP and dual-enrollment classes offered that taught me adherence and embellished my work ethic. My ambition to succeed motivated me to new limits I didn’t think possible as I worked to get the most out of my education. These valuable skills are ones transferable to my college career. Outside of the classroom, I participated in many extracurriculars, such as robotics, track and field, cross country, National Honors Society and soccer. Allotting my energy to all of these activities taught me how to balance my time between school and personal interests. With the busy life that comes with being a student athlete, I quickly learned how to not only get my homework done, but make sure it was superb. My enhanced abilities and passion for both extracurriculars and school propelled me to success. I feel prepared for college knowing that I’ve developed academic skills that lead to prosperity. A special thanks can be said to those who have guided me along the way both in and outside of the classroom.
To start I would like to thank my middle school mathematics teacher Mrs. Stephanie Gorney. She was the spark that kindled the bright flame that I am today, leading me to my interests in math and science. Without her guidance I may be a completely different student. She taught me more than math; however, she enlightened me to the idea of trying my hardest no matter what, and by installing that mindset earlier in my life, I feel that she shaped me to be a hardworking student that would always put 100%. Another principle in my academic success comes from what I consider the three pillars of Harbor Beach teaching staff. These three individuals lead me in my extensive workload to continue to push myself to the bounds of no such other. These three would be none other that Mr. Joseph Terwillegar, Mr. David Roggenbuck, and Ms. Alissa King. Each of these individuals did more for me than I could have ever asked, by pushing me to my academic limits you have prepared me for the turmoils of life both in and after college and for that I am ever grateful. Lastly I would like to thank someone who often times does not get enough recognition in letters such as these, and that is my track and field/ cross country coach, Mrs. Deborah Anderson. Mrs. Anderson has taught me life lessons that extend beyond school, that I can carry with me throughout life. She taught me that no matter how important you might find something, ultimately happiness is the most important thing in life, and while she may not always make practice seem that way, she means it deep down. Harbor Beach Community High School has been a vessel for me to ride the waves of life, but it is now my time to continue on to bigger and better things, that is not to say it has not been great, but here I am, ready for what is next.

Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School Huron Daily Tribune Class Officer Letter To the Unionville-Sebewaing Area Class of 2022, Over the past four years, we have faced many difficult obstacles due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these barriers have helped us learn who we are as individuals and put many things into perspective. The normal activities that we enjoyed and the experiences that we never had made us more grateful for the opportunities we were given during our senior year. Although the high school experience has not been perfect, we know the situations we have been put through have brought us all closer together and prepared us for many difficulties that we will face in the future. Even though the pandemic has altered our high school experience, we continued forward and made countless memories. An example we’d like to highlight is our Homecoming Bonfire. Due to high COVID rates, we were unable to have our usual Homecoming Dance. Instead, we were given a bonfire with
music, dancing, and snacks. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, even though it was out of the ordinary. Even though we did not get what we wanted or expected out of the last years of high school, we wish to call attention to everything we did receive, such as our normal first-year. That is something we all might have taken for granted, but the pandemic should make us thankful for this first year of complete normalcy. It is hard to not let COVID overshadow our highschool experience. It completely changed three years of our lives in both good and bad ways. Our hope is that one day we can all look back positively at high school and recognize the lengths we have jumped through to achieve it. There is no doubt in our minds that each and every one of us will move on to do incredible things and we wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors. Sincerely, President Macy Reinhardt, Vice-President Grace Suber, Secretary Allyson Harrison. and Treasurer Kaden Myers

more than that. Then I joined cross country, and I definitely struggled. I learned the first lesson fast; cross country was (and is) hard, and I would finish every race near last place and in tears.
Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School Huron Daily Tribune Letter 19 April 2022
This was the trend for two years, until seventh grade, when we learned we had a new coach. Mr. Peter guided us through the hurt, and gave us the flame we needed to reach out and work harder. Practices were hard. Races even harder. But somehow, slowly, the hurt seemed to matter less and less, and I accredit that to the unwavering support and kindness that Mr. Peter showed each and every one ofus through it all. Standing here, looking back on my years in cross, I can’t help but be proud of how far I’ve come, not only as an athlete, but as a person, because at the end of the day Mr. Peter taught me how to work, and I will never go a single day without feeling grateful for everything he has done for me. I know I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for the outstanding coach and role model Mr. Peter has been for me over the years.
Tribune Letter While USA has done exceptionally well in preparing me for college academically, I don’t believe any of my classes or teachers could have ever done more to prepare me for the next step than my eighth grade algebra teacher-and cross country coach-Mike Peter. Cross country taught me that not everything comes easy in life. It’s an important lesson, surely, but it was Mr. Peter who taught me the most critical lesson I’ve ever learned: to not give up on something just because it doesn’t come naturally. School came easy early on, and that is with great thanks to my parents’ and teachers, however I was never really challenged. I never knew how to dedicate myself to anything that took more than an ounce of effort, because barely anything took
Kylie Bohn - Senior Scholar Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School Senior Scholar Letter for the Huron Daily Tribune Dear Reader, As my classmates and I begin to enter the next chapter of our lives, I am able to look back and smile at the bittersweet memories that come with the closing of this chapter. As everyone in the world knows, Covid-19 sucked. It affected the Class of 2022 in March of our sophomore year and continued to affect us through our junior year. For me personally, volleyball in the summer of 2020 was one of the hardest experiences I’ve gone through. We did open gyms at the Sebewaing park in masks in the 90° sun, not knowing when, or even if, we would ever make it to the gym. Finally, on September 3rd, we were given the best news-we could start playing indoors! I’ve never been more grateful to be back inside our little red, white, and blue gym. During the 2020 season, I learned a lot, but mostly from my fellow
teammates. They never relented, even when we weren’t sure if our hard work would ever get the chance to prove itself. The lessons I learned as a junior stayed with me as a senior. I was now a captain, and I wanted to lead our team like the seniors before me had: never giving up, having each other’s backs, and trusting one another. From my teammates, I have learned the importance of attitude and effort. My dad taught me when I was young that these are two aspects we ALWAYS have control over, but his words never clicked until my junior/ senior years. My teammates and I had no control over the pandemic, the calls made in games, or the things other student sections would yell at us, but we DID have control over how much effort we gave and the attitudes we maintained. I believe this is a lesson that can be applied to more than just sports and can be used throughout your whole life, young or old. As I close this chapter and begin to start a new one, I will always remember what I can and cannot control, and I will always be grateful for the girls who helped me along the way. Patriot proud forever. Kylie Bohn
class was to show his students that by working hard they could succeed and make themselves a better person.
Ty Pavlichek - Senior Scholar Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School Senior Scholar Letter for Huron Daily Tribune High school was a journey full of ups and downs that I will never forget. Memories and friends made along the way, but most importantly the lessons learned. Respect is the most important lesson that I learned in high school and with that I have come to respect some amazing individuals over the years. Mr. Vansumeren and Mr. Peter are two of the highest people on my list of respect. Mr. Vansumeren taught the physical education class at our school, and some people may look at it as just gym class but it was more than that with him. He pushed his kids to do what they didn’t know they could. He was hard on everyone but it was for a good reason. His class relates to everything I have ever done and everything I will ever do. It’s going to be hard and grueling, but by putting in the work you can succeed. Only look back to see how far you have come(Mick Kremling) is one of my favorite quotes that I learned in his class. All the hard work and effort that you put in during his class was never just another gym class. Everything he pushed in his
Mr. Peter was a teacher, a coach, and a friend to me and prepared me for my future more than anybody I know. I built a relationship with him that I have never had with anyone before. He pushed me to be a better person everyday and taught me leadership within my sports. Leadership to me is more than just being the boss. Leadership is being a role model and someone who respects the individuals they are working with. They listen more than they speak to learn as they guide their peers. I learned all of this by watching the way that Mr. Peter respected his athletes and students the same way they respected him. I have been on many adventures with Mr. Peter from running camps to races that are 8 hours away. He taught me honor, devotion, integrity, and so many more skills that will help me through any situation I could imagine. School and these 2 individuals especially have made me the person I want to be. They taught me more than I knew I was going to learn, and prepared me more than I ever thought. I am prepared for my future and anything that will be thrown at me because of the people that have helped me to get as far as I am today.

Huron Daily Tribune | Graduation Memories 2022
USA High School Class of 2022 Leah Urban - Senior Scholar Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School Senior Scholar Letter for the Huron Daily Tribune In complete honesty, I don’t remember much of the information I was taught in the past four years. While it held some importance in my daily life and my future, it isn’t the thing I’m going to remember most about high school. It’s going to be the people and the little things. It’s going to be the smiles that greeted me from the office windows every morning. They started my day off right and made me feel seen. They knew me by name, by my hobbies, and so much more. Those smiles went out of their way to make me feel special. I’m going to remember the daunting sarcasm that dripped from Mr. Ioannidis’ teachings. I learn so much more than English in his classes. I learned to interact with people through words on a page, to be structured, and to know which printers printed perfect one-inch margins. I also learned that despite having hard exteriors, these teachers wanted me to succeed and were there to help me when I needed it. Grace Suber Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School Senior Scholar Letter for Huron Daily Tribune I had the opportunity to learn from some very special teachers. If you are a Patriot, you know Mr. I. He expects a lot academically, but provides students with knowledge, skills, and confidence that will last beyond the classroom. He demanded a high level of effort and work, but was kind with his words, helped build self esteem, and created a positive learning environment that made his classes enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, I spent many late nights and early mornings studying, but his classes built a foundation of solid study skills, organizational techniques, and feelings of being successful early in high school that helped me get through stressful times later on. Another outstanding teacher is Mrs. McBrayer. She has consistently been my cheerleader and supporter throughout high school. She is sincere, thoughtful with her words,
Through my Band and Senior Seminar classes, I learned valuable lessons from Mr. Aikens about finances and more. How to manage money, go through college successfully, and having fun and making jokes during stressful weeks is acceptable. We can take a bad situation, like rain during band camp, and turn it into a competition. We can tell stories like pulling cheese sticks out of tubas during festival week and laugh immensely. I learned it’s okay to have different opinions than everyone else in the room, but most importantly to stick to my guns and argue productively. Mrs. Gruehn taught me to coat my words in emotion and paint a picture of myself on a page. Finally, I learned that there are just some things I’m not meant to do. I’m accident-prone and shouldn’t be around anything not surrounded by bubble wrap. But nonetheless, Mr. Vansumeren had faith that I could complete his class without breaking a leg, and I did. These are the people I’m going to remember. These lessons are going to stick with me all my life and help me succeed. These are just a handful of the precious memories that shaped me, but they are also some of the most important ones.
Carly Koch - Senior Scholar Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School Senior Scholar Letter for Huron Daily Tribune High school has taught me numerous lessons that will stick with me for the rest of my life, and although nothing could ever fully prepare me for this next step, I will be taking what I have learned and applying it to everything I go on to do. I have attended USA schools for twelve years now, and it has made a major impact on my life, especially these last four years. Mr. Vansumeran, our strength training teacher, taught me that not putting in my full effort harms no one but myself. He ingrained this lesson into my mind, and I have carried this with me. Throughout high school, I have put forth as much effort as I could, which may not have been 100% all the time, however this mindset is what has helped me to succeed. Another of my teachers, Mrs. McBrayer, taught me the benefit of kindness. I truly believe that no other
and shows genuine care for her students. I don’t know of any other teacher that is as admirable as her. These two teachers embody my greatest lesson learned throughout high school: you never know how much your kindness can impact a person. During my time at USA, I of course learned all about English, math, and science; but understanding the importance of being friendly and gracious towards others will benefit me far outside of the classroom. Growing up, when my mom would drop me off at school, she would always tell me, “Be blessed and be a blessing to others.” It’s such a surreal moment to look back at my high school years and recognize the adult figures in my life who went above and beyond to show compassion, and I will forever be grateful for that. I hope I was able to reciprocate that same kind of benevolence to fellow students and friends, because we all deserve to feel valued. Thank you USA for the past 14 years-it was truly an unforgettable experience.

teacher in the highschool supports and loves their students as much as her, and it shows. She has repeatedly gone out of her way to help me with things that were out of her job description. She has shown me how a little kindness can make a big impact. At USA schools, I was a part of the volleyball program starting in 7th grade. This sport has genuinely taught me the most out of everything I have done in my eighteen years of life. I gained so much confidence, along with leadership skills, humility, and healthy amounts of pride. Coach Kiersten was a huge factor to my success. She taught me that confidence is key, and always lifted me up when my confidence was faltering. USA volleyball also taught me adaptability. In 2020, when the pandemic was raging, our team was not allowed to practice inside our gym. We were forced to practice in the unkempt sand courts in our local parks. This posed many new challenges to our team, yet we adapted and overcame them. I have had so many valuable experiences at USA that I hope will help me as I take this next step in my life.
