Caseville prepares for long-awaited ‘Cheeseburger Festival’ TERESA HOMSI teresa.homsi@hearstnp.com Caseville’s long-awaited annual Cheeseburger Festival will kick off Aug. 13 with a variety of events and activities. The festival will run until Aug. 22 with the theme of “A Little Piece of Paradise.” Chamber of Commerce President and Event Coordinator Steve Louwers said the theme is open to interpretation by attendees. “Our shirts are gonna have, of course, a parrot on it,” Louwers said, “But when I think of paradise, I imagine this parrot is going to be laying on a hammock between two palm trees, with a beautiful sunset in the background. To me, that’s paradise.” As per tradition, the 10-day festival will feature the “Tropical Fools Parade” at 5:30 on Aug. 18 through town. To walk in the parade, entries must be submitted by Aug. 17, and applications can be found on the Caseville Chamber of Commerce website. In past years, Louwers said the parade has brought in approximately 50,000 attendees from across Michigan and runs for about two hours. “We get some extremely

(Tribune File Photos) clever floats, big cheeseburgers or big big parrots and stuff like that,” Louwers said. “It’s just unique, something that’s hard to explain, but something you don’t see in a normal parade.” Louwers said the Caseville Chamber of Commerce has partnered with local businesses and community organizations to put on hundreds of events throughout the festival. Since the Cheeseburger Festival was toned down last year, Louwers said he’s excited for its return, especially because of the uncertainty leading up to plan-

ning efforts. “It’s been a lot more difficult trying to put this together in three months, as opposed to eight to nine months because we didn’t have any positivity that we were going to be doing the festival this year,” Louwers said. “(With the loosening of COVID restrictions), we’re excited to do it, and we always make it work.” Other festival highlights include cheeseburger vendors, live musical performances, various contests and tournaments, a cardboard boat race and a new

downhill cart derby race. “Some people come because they enjoy buying hamburgers from the fire department or because they enjoy the beach activities, because they’re strictly Jimmy Buffett Parrotheads for the rock music at night, and some just come for the parade,” Louwers said. “I want all those people to come and be satisfied with our festival.” With more events yet to be added to the schedule, Louwers said this year’s festival will rival past years and perhaps exceed them in size and magnitude.

Despite the buzz for the festival, Louwers said he hopes attendees can still be mindful of safety protocols and guidelines, exercising caution if they have not been vaccinated. “I just want everyone to go home happy and of course, healthy,” Louwers said, before adding, “and a couple of pounds heavier from all the cheeseburgers.” For the full schedule, visit the Caseville Chamber of Commerce website here: https:// www.casevillechamber.com/ events.asp?FestivalType=5

Elkton Autumn Fest returns after two-year hiatus MARK BIRDSALL mark.birdsall@hearstnp.com Just like every other summer festival in 2020, the annual Elkton Autumn Fest was cancelled due to the pandemic. The loss of the annual event, which traditionally takes place Labor Day weekend, was a blow to the entire community. There will be no cancellation in 2021. This year, festival will take place from Friday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 5, and feature everything from a memorial dog walk to a performance by an ‘80s tribute band. Also planned for 2021 is a 5K walk/run. The festival is centered around family-friendly activities, including a community church service, free kids inflatables, a chicken barbecue, a classic car show, a bocce ball tournament and truck and tractor pulls. For the grownups, there’s the Saturday night entertainment tent, where they’ll find food and beverages as well as performances by three musical acts, including headliner Sunset BLVD, and ‘80s tribute band. The Elkton Autumn Fest will return Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-4, after the 2020 festival was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Harbor Beach ‘Pirates Motorcycle Run’ plans to open community to bikers TERESA HOMSI teresa.homsi@hearstnp.com Although the details are still being finalized, the Harbor Beach “Pirates Motorcycle Run” will be held this year. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. Aug. 21. The tentative schedule includes registration for bikers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in town. After registration, bikers will meet at the American Legion Hall and head out at 1 p.m. Event coordinator and Harbor Beach Mayor Gary Booms said the route has not been set, but he’s currently planning seven different stops for participants. After the motorcade ends at 5 p.m., attendees will head to Lincoln Memorial Park for live music and a barbecue. Booms said this is a new

event to Harbor Beach, but he had been wanting to host it since he got a Harley a couple of years ago. “Our city director has a motorcycle and then our community promotions director Kelly and her husband have motorcycles, so I thought this would be a great idea for the (biker community),” Booms said. With the pandemic, the idea never took off as he had hoped, but Booms saw a second chance this summer. “We thought we’ll give it a try and see what happens,” Booms said. “We’re always looking for different ways to get people to come to Harbor Beach, support the community and promote Huron County and the Thumb in general.” Booms said it would be great just to have 20 bikes come out for the event’s first year running, but he has no idea what to expect as far as turnout. “Hopefully we get to draw

some people over and just have a good time and promote the area,” Booms said. “If it goes over this year great, next year we might expand it out and maybe cruise a little further.” Depending on how this year goes, Booms sees potential for expansion in the future by adding more shows and making the event more family-friendly moving forward. Though the event is geared toward bikers, Booms said he still encourages everyone to come on out to the beach for music and food. “If you have a love for motorcycles and want to support our local community, come on out,” Booms said. Booms said the schedule is still tentative and subject to change, so for more updates, follow the Harbor Beach Chamber of Commerce at www.facebook. com/harborbeachchamber.

MARK BIRDSALL mark.birdsall@hearstnp.com The annual Elkton Country Street Fair returns to the north side of Main Street on Sept. 25. The fair, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature eight zones for vendors, with spots for booths ranging from $10 to $20, depending on the zone. First-time street fair vendors will receive a $5 discount on their booths. The fair usually features 50 to 60 vendors offering items like food, handmade craft items, cosmetics, woodworking and jewelry as well as a small farmers market. Vendors come from all over the Thumb and the state to offer their wares. The fair will also include live music from the Josh Ramses band as well as a

“Meet Your Heroes” area, where kids can talk with police officers, firefighters and ambulance crews, check out equipment and take part in other activities. Agnes Kosinski, one of the organizers of the street fair, said there will two new fun activities added to this year’s schedule. The first is a pumpkin decorating contest, with categories for kids, teens and adults and two prize categories: People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice. The second new activity was made possible when a number of sponsors chipped in to purchase a foam-making machine. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kids Zone, youngsters will have the chance to jump into a huge pile of foam to hunt for prizes hidden inside. Kosinski said foam parties will be

held for different age brackets each hour to make sure smaller children don’t get lost in the shuff le. “We try to keep things fun for the kids,” she said. Kosinski said even though they’ve got numerous vendors lined up for this year’s fair, they accept new vendors up until a week before the fair. “We’re getting more vendors, and we’re always looking for more vendors,” she said. Organizers are wellaware of the current situation involving the pandemic, and Kosinski said they will follow guidelines issued by the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and evaluate conditions as the fair approaches. “The bottom line is to keep everybody safe,” she said.

Polka Fest in Kinde returns Sept. 18-19 SCOTT NUNN scott.nunn@hearstnp.com With the support of dozens of businesses and groups throughout the communities in Huron County, Kinde Polka Fest returns for another year of live musical entertainment Sept. 18-19. This year’s polka fest features a two-day event, with admission costing $15 per adult per day, $10 per young adult per day, or free for kids 15 and under. Saturday’s activities kick off at 9 a.m. with the annual Kinde Polka Fest 5K, followed by live music beginning at 2 p.m. and running through the rest of the night. Those looking to participate in the 5K should register. Registration is available online at kindepolkafest.org for $25 in advance, or $28 after Sept. 1. Registration is also open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. the day of the event. Some of Saturday’s bands include Darrel Weltin, Lenny Longuski and The Style Stix, and the Kielbasa Kings to name a few.
