She is a very versatile player.” Brown County is a young team, with only two seniors, but a lot of the Hornets’ younger players got valuable experience last season due to the lack of upperclassmen. “At times we started three, four underclassmen and had five other underclassmen coming off the bench,” Phelps said. “Depth will be one of our strengths for sure, with 10 to 12 players that could contribute on any given night. But with young players often come young mistakes.” Right now the Hornets are looking for leaders. “We will need several of our young ladies to step up and take leadership roles for us this year,” Phelps said. “And we will need those young players to play with maturity and poise for us to have success against the area’s top teams.” Despite their youth, Phelps thinks this team will be competitive this season, and could challenge for conference and regional championships. “Our depth and experience, even though it may still be youthful, will allow us to do some things we weren’t able to do a year ago,” Phelps said. “My coaching staff and I are excited about the direction our program is going.”

Coach: Jimmy Maltby (4th season) Last season’s record: 7-19 Key Losses: Racquel Rawlins (8.5 ppg), Camilla Garcia (9.4 ppg, 9 rpg), Elizabeth Garcia (5 spg), Jayna Herzog (6 rpg) Returning starters: 5-7 senior guard Micah Carlock (team leader in assists last year with 3.9 apg). “Micah is our returning point guard and leader on the defensive end,” Maltby said. “Look for her to score more and be one of the assist leaders in the area.” Key returning players: 5-10 senior forward Ellie White. “Ellie will bring leadership and will fill the stat sheet in several offensive and defensive categories,” Maltby said. … 6-2 junior center Taryn Herzog. “Taryn will secure our inside game,” the coach said. “Very good post defender and runs the floor well.” … 5-7 junior guard Andrea Perales. “We look for Andrea to be an offensive threat this season, especially from the three-point line,” Maltby said. … 5-6 sophomore guard Ferin Carlock. “Ferin will be one of our playmakers,” the coach said. “Can create shots on her own and also get to the basket.” “The Lady Tigers are looking to have balanced scoring this season after losing the top two scorers and also top two rebounders to graduation,” Maltby said. “We need to take care of the ball and knock down some outside shots to open up our inside game. This year’s Lady Tigers will be very competitive and will take pride on defense, as this team will be aggressive and give 100 percent effort.”

She started as a sophomore before not playing last year. Was a second-team all-conference performer.” Other returners include: senior guard Hope Wilschetz (2.2 ppg, 0.8 apg), junior guard-forward Elly Pohlman (1.2 ppg, 1.2 rpg — missed several weeks due to injury), junior forward Jackie Barczewski (0.8 ppg, 1.2 rpg), sophomore forward Ella Sievers (1.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg — missed most of season with an injury), sophomore forward Maddie Buchanan, sophomore guard Mallory Kamp, and sophomore guard Kylie Angel. Freshman Jaelyn Hill is a key newcomer this year. She will compete for a starting position and could handle duties at point guard and shooting guard. “Look for her to be a great facilitator with our offensive game plan,” Hillen said. Other key newcomers include freshmen Kortney Herkert and Heaven Corbett, and senior Olivia McIntyre, a first-year player with speed and quickness. She could be used as a defensive substitute. “I fully expect us to improve our overall record and record in the WIVC,” Hillen said. “We return a lot of experience

will be deeper off the bench this season, which will be a factor as well. I believe we can have a winning record in the WIVC and compete for a regional title.” Hillen said a good start this season would be a confidence booster. “Our junior class is going to need to take the next step in their mental maturity,” the coach said. “They took their lumps as sophomores last season, and a lot of our success is going to hinge on their progress this season. Our seniors are solid varsity players, and will need to show leadership on and off the floor. We have some young players who will see significant minutes, and I believe they are ready to fill those roles.” Hillen said a year’s experience should translate to more consistency on the court. “At times we looked like we belonged last year, and other times we looked like we should not be playing with some of the top competition we faced,” the coach said. “We hope that inconsistency was attributed to the youth we had on the floor, and that our mental and physical maturity this season will put us over the top with more consistent play.”

GREENFIELD-NORTHWESTERN
Coach: Caleb Williams (8th year) Last season’s record: 15-14 Greenfield-Northwestern should be a competitive team again this season despite graduating three starters and a post player off the bench. Laiken Heavner, the Tigers’ all-time career three-point shooter, will be missed, as well as Macy Walker, a feisty defensive guard who could score when the team needed points. Haylei Schaaf is another shooting guard who will have to be replaced, along with Carly McAdams, a 6-foot post player. “Any time you have to replace that much experience, there is an immediate learning curve,” Williams said. “Our summer season went well, and last year’s sophomores are ready to start making a difference.” Third-year starter Jessa Vetter will be handling much of the point guard duties and setting the table for the Tigers’ offense and defense this season. Junior Anna Triplett will look to add some points to the lineup this season after earning some time late in the season last year. She had a strong summer. Junior Kaitlyn Foiles is a returning letter winner who played a key role in the lineup last season. A solid defender, Foiles is expected to add some offense this year. Junior Michaela Theivagt looks to break into the starting lineup this season as a guard-forward, providing points and rebounds.
Routt’s (from left) AJ Lowe, Sydney Walker, Emily Nava and Tori Fellhauer vie for a rebound during a recent practice.
Senior guard Taylor Smith will give the team some added intensity on defense. Sophomore Alexis Pohlman, a returning letter winner and starter from a season ago, will look to improve her game from a season ago. “She is a determined kid that plays hard on both sides of the basketball and scores a lot of buckets,” Williams said. Greenfield-Northwestern also has a large group of sophomores who could potentially help off the bench. “We hope that their roles grow throughout the season,” Williams said. Jealee Clark, Torrie McAdams, Aliyah Roberts and Laural Rothe all will be battling for playing time
at the varsity level. “If everybody stays healthy and we continue to work hard, we could be a very tough opponent,” the coach said.
ILLINOIS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Coach: Drake Williams (2nd season) “We are currently the rebuilding team with three returning players and three newcomers,” Williams said. “This year’s focus is to ensure each athlete improves their basketball skills individually, and understanding game situations to get full comprehension of their responsibilities while playing basketball. ing hard in practice daily to keep up with game speed, and my goal for each player is to have the opportunity to touch the ball without being nervous to shoot, and emphasize defense side as a priority. “Our weakness is that we don’t have depth, but we do have six athletes that desire to work hard in practice. They understand that we need to stay together as a team and finish the season strong.”
JACKSONVILLE
Coach: Brandon Radford (first season) Last year’s record: 1-31 (0-18 CS8) “We return a very young but bright group of players and are extremely
excited about the future of our program — not just this season, but the next couple of years as well,” Radford said. “We lost a couple seniors to graduation including Megan March, Jasmine Watson and Veronica Parkevich. We are led by junior Carley Provo (two-year varsity letter-winner), Annika Robinson (last year’s leading scorer), as well as other sophomores Lauren Flagler, Liz Soltermann, Madison Shanks and Frankie Hoots.” The Crimsons will be without sophomore Jessica Robinson to start the season. Robinson is recovering from a knee injury. “We have a couple young freshmen who will also see the floor at some point this season,” Radford said. “They include Ella Wilson (6-0 post player), Jaymee Vollmer (5-9 forward) and guards Tate Morrisey and Brooke Brannan to help fill out the roster and ease the workload of the backcourt. We will run eight to ten players deep and are excited to showcase what we can do offensively and defensively this upcoming season. The future looks bright for the Lady Crimsons.”
NORTH GREENE
Coach: Jim Roesch (24th season) Last season’s record: 12-20 (1-7 WIVC) Returning starters: 5-5 senior Lakeleigh Brown (12.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.2 apg, 4.0 spg, 48.8 field goal percentage, 41.2 three-point field goal percentage — AllWIVC the past two seasons), 5-6 senior Tori Smith (3.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.7 spg, 30.0 field goal percentage — started for the past two years), 6-0 sophomore Jenna Barnard (6.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.2 apg, 0.9 spg, 36.7 field goal percentage, 68.6 free throw percentage, 61 blocks) Returning letter winners: 5-3 sophomore Bailey Berry (1.0 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.6 apg, 0.9 spg), 5-2 sophomore Taylor Gilmore (1.1 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.4 apg, 0.7 spg) Starters lost: Madilyn Gilmore (7.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and Madison McClenning (6.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg) Key newcomers: 5-3 junior Hailey Thompson (0.6 ppg, 1.3 rpg) and 5-10 freshman Cami Hurt “We had a good summer, finishing with a winning record,” Roesch said. “Our starters played well, but we need to stay healthy and develop depth. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS injury, which hurts, but we’ll have to have inexperienced players step up early, which will help us later in the season. Program-wide, numbers are down, so younger players will be needed. “We can be dangerous if we stay healthy and gain experience.”
PITTSFIELD/GRIGGSVILLE-PERRY
Coach Jeff Shireman (9th season) Last season’s record: 20-10 Pittsfield lost two of its main scorers — Lilly Pepper and Sydney Bauer — to graduation, along with Gretchen Wessell and Maggie Marable. Wessell played a key role with her hard-nosed defense, while Marable was injured after a quarter and a half in the Saukees’ first game vs. Routt and was lost for the season. “Although we lost a great amount of talent and dedicated players, we still have a good core group of players returning,” Shireman said. “Chloe Lemons and Katie Cox return as starters from the 2018-19 team, along with Kayla Merryman, who played a vital role as our sixth man. “It is important that these three players make up for the scoring we lost due to graduation. With that being said, we have many younger players who will have the opportunity to see many varsity minutes if they can adapt to the fast pace of varsity basketball.” Note: Pleasant Hill, expecting an influx of players next year, has withdrawn from the co-op. The Wolves are playing a limited varsity schedule this season.
PORTA/A-C CENTRAL
Coach: Eric Kesler (7th season) Last season’s record: 23-6 (6-1 Sangamo) The Lady Jays lost Taylor Danner to graduation. Danner, a four-year starter, averaged 7 points and 6.3 rebounds last year, and was an outstanding defender. PORTA/A-C Central returns five starters, including seniors Kassidy Kirchner (10 ppg, 2.1 rpg), Kyia Privia (4.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg) and Emma Stone (5.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg), along with juniors Bailey Wallbaum (9.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Isabel Hudspeth (7.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg). Other returning players include junior Addy McClure (3.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg), senior Allison Roberts (1.4 ppg, 1.1 rpg), senior Skyler Arthalony, junior Maggie

Gibbs and junior Sydney Wallbaum. “We have good overall team quickness and strength in the post,” Kesler said. “Hopefully, we will continue to have a solid, balanced attack.” Kesler said his players need to take care of the basketball and finish their shots to have another successful season. Staying healthy is a must. “We have been balanced in transitioning the basketball down the floor and have been able to slow down and run our
sets when we need to,” the coach said. “That will need to continue. “Ours goals are to win a Sangamo Conference championship and work hard to repeat as regional champs and go from there,” Kesler said.

Coach: Joe Eilering (12th season) Last season’s record: 27-4 (9-0 WIVC) See GIRLS | Page 6

“Team had an outstanding year last season,” Eilering said. “Team is losing two outstanding players in Katie Abell (12.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg) and Annika Black (6.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg).” The Rockets return four senior starters from last season: Bella McCartney (12 ppg, 9 rpg), Kirsten Huffman (6.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.6 apg), Lacey Schierl (7.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.6 apg) and Rachel Ely (4 ppg, 1 rpg, 1.3 apg). Also returning is senior Sydney Walker, who missed last season with a knee injury. Walker averaged 7 points and six rebounds in her sophomore season and is an important addition to this year’s team. Also returning are junior Madi Fellhauer and sophomores Addie Dobson, Caitlyn Horney and Grace McCartney, who all saw some playing time last season. “Team has a lot of experience returning,” Eilering said. “Having Walker back is a big plus for the team. Team had a great summer and is looking forward to the season. I think we are capable of another real strong season. I think we can compete for conference and regional titles again this year. This group can go eight to nine deep. Did lose size and two very good post players from last year. Team is fairly quick and does rebound very well as a group. Can score from all positions.”
SOUTH COUNTY
Coach: Scott Hendricks (13th season) Last season’s record: 13-16 Key losses: Caitlyn Braker (8.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.6 spg, 2.3 apg), Reese Jackson (3.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg), Grace Doyle (1.5 rpg, 1.0 ppg) Returning starters: 5-5 senior guard Elyse Copelin (8.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg), 5-11 senior forward Malena Bixby (6.7 rpg, 5.1 ppg), 5-6 junior guard Mollie Allen (2.6 ppg, 1.9 rpg) Other returning players: 5-9 senior forward Emilie King (2.2 rpg), 5-10 senior forward Abby Crow (3.6 rpg, 3.4 ppg), 5-6 junior guard Callie Hughes (3.3 rpg, 3.7 ppg), 5-7 sophomore Olivia Crayne, 5-7 sophomore Maddie Mutch, 5-10 sophomore Kenna Bixby “We have several girls that have played significant minutes since their freshman year, and hope that experience pays off this year,” Hendricks said. “Should have solid post presence with some outside

shooting to go with it.” Hendricks wants his team to be more physical, limit mistakes and dictate tempo. The coach expects a good season. “Definitely not a rebuilding year with seven of our top ten back from last year, and the three sophomores we add to the mix are very talented and have some varsity experience as well,” Hendricks said. “Should hope to be competitive in all games and improve on last season’s record.”
TRIOPIA
Coach: Ashley Sanders (first year as head coach after serving as assistant coach for five years) Last season’s record: 25-7 Key losses: Chloe Reynolds (10.3 ppg, 2.1 apg, 2.4 spg), Kamryn Portwood (6.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.2 spg), Hannah Werries (2.3 rpg), Hayley Walkington Returning starters: 6-0 senior power forward Anna Burrus (18 ppg, 15.2
rpg, 2 apg, 3.3 bpg), 5-7 senior guard Sara Evans (10.3 ppg, 2.4 apg, 2.3 spg), 5-6 senior point guard Madison Gregory (6 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.5 apg) Other returning players: 5-8 senior center Payton Dawson (injured last season, but back this year —and stronger), 5-5 senior guard Emily Carson (injured last season), 5-8 sophomore guard Hailey Reynolds, and 5-5 junior Presley Wankel Key newcomers, and what they bring to the table: senior Marissa Mueller (quick defensive presence), sophomore Kendra Stock (great shooter, sees the floor well), sophomore Sailym Reid (rebounding), sophomore Alizza Gaines (strong inside presence), freshman Ava Ganz (great basketball knowledge, and a great shooter), freshman Megan Reynolds (handles the ball well, and a good passer) and freshman Lilly Carson (defensive intensity) “The 2019-20 Triopia Lady Trojans
are hungry for more,” Sanders said. “They are excited and motivated to continue achieving the success that they have felt so far. We are returning a strong nucleus from last year’s 25-7 team in our First Team All-State post player, Anna Burrus, another 1,000 point scorer in Sara Evans, and our always solid point guard, Madison Gregory. Those three have four years of varsity experience, and I expect them to lead their team. This team really buys into playing for each other. We have strong upperclassmen full of varsity experience, and an athletic sophomore and freshman group ready to step into their roles.” Sanders said the team needs to stay healthy this season, and the Trojans also will need some underclassmen to step up and contribute on the varsity team. “They are capable,” Sanders said. “It is just getting them confident to do it. We will need to stay defensively sound and make good decisions down the stretch. On days where shooting may not be great, we want our defense to keep us in ball games.” The Trojans are hoping for another long postseason run this year. “We expect to not skip a beat,” Sanders said. “We are focused and ready to be right back where we were last season. There is a lot of fire and determination in our seniors, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. We are looking to be competitive in every ball game.”
WEST CENTRAL
Coach: Brian Bettis (16th season at West Central, 24th year overall) Last season’s record: 16-12 (5-3 WIVC) Key losses: Annika Kaufmann (18.2 points per game, 81 percent free throw shooter, 49 three-pointers) Returners: Sydney Elliot (P), Emma Slagle (F), Calista Fox (G) and Zaylei Evans (G) Other returners: Madi DeJaynes (G), Zoe Evans (P), Emma Smith (P), Anna Sellars (F) “Very experienced team with four starters returning, but inexperienced at the same time,” Bettis said. “Loss of Annika Kaufmann will be hard to overcome.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS BEARDSTOWN
Coach: Eric Anderson (fifth season) Last season’s record: 19-11 Beardstown lost two starters from last season, guard DJ McWilliams (8 ppg) and forward Ryan Orr (5 ppg). The Tigers return 10 players, including starters Pascal Guilavogui, Avery Quigley and Jahdiel Rodriguez. Other impact players, including Tristan Gann, Gloire Zambele, Bless Kamuena, Cris Villegas and Clement Kayembe, also return. “Our athleticism and skill will allow us to play an up-tempo style on both ends,” Anderson said. “We have capable shooters all over the floor.” Guilavogui is the team’s leading returning scorer, averaging 15 points per game last season, with seven rebounds and three steals per game. Guilavogui is already over 1,000 career points; he should be close to 1,000 total rebounds by the end of the season. Guilavogui drives this team; Anderson said he brings pace and the ability to finish above the rim, and can change the game on the glass. Quigley averages 8 points per game. His coach said he provides intensity, leadership and shot-making. Rodriguez averaged 13 points per game last year. Anderson called him the best shooter in the area, with an ability to get shots off anywhere, even in close quarters. He’s added the ability to drive to complement his game. Gloire Zambele can get to the rim — and shot 40 percent from the arc in spot duty last year. He’s ready for an increased role as a starter. Sophomore Bless Kamuena (4 ppg) shoots with range, has good size and athleticism, and is poised for a breakout season. “Uber-talented, made huge strides,” Anderson said. “Might be the best player in the area right now.”
Beardstown won six games in Anderson’s first year, then 11, then 15, and finally, 19 last season. “We have tremendous depth and should contend in every game we play,” the coach said. “Last year we led in the second half in 28 of 30 games we played, but only won 19. It’s been a process. We’ve increased our win totals every year I’ve been here, but the buy-in has been great, and hopefully we have learned how to finish games and compete for championships.”
BROWN COUNTY
Dennis Mathes | Journal-Courier
Jacksonville’s Grant Hughes looks for a teammate during a recent practice.
Gann averaged 6 points per game last season, and Kayembe gives the Tigers a physical presence. Key newcomers include Yandell Solis, who has great poise and decision-making ability; Lucas Domitien, the Tigers’ best on-ball defender; and Owen Quigley, who
gives Beardstown extra scoring pop off the bench. Anderson said to win games this season, the team will need consistent defensive intensity. “Stay aggressive, play unselfish, make shots and keep the ball moving,” the coach said.
Coach: Eric Jones (first season) Last season’s record: 12-17 Brown County lost three players from last year’s team who contributed 45 percent of the scoring and 40 percent of the rebounds, but the Hornets have five key returning letter winners who should be able to fill the void. Brown County will be led by last year’s scoring leader, Nathan Hendricker (6-3 senior, 16.4 ppg) who is only 12 points shy of 1,000. Other returning letter winners include Mason Buss (5-9 senior); Seth Fisher (5-10 senior); Chance Fuqua (6-2 junior); and Tate Fullerton (6-1 sophomore). Gabe Blakeley (6-3 sophomore) and Brody Woodward (6-0 sophomore) also saw key minutes last year at the varsity level. Key newcomers this year are Gavin Miller (5-7 senior) and Kody McKeon (5-9 senior). Rylee Rohn (5-9 junior), Mason Henry (6-3 sophomore), and Jake Laning (5-8 sophomore) round out the Hornets’ roster. “Our team is very athletic, and we have the ability to go nine to ten deep,” Jones said. “We have veteran leadership with five seniors, but our underclassmen See BOYS | Page 8

Rebounding will be a team strength, as well as the ability to run multiple defenses. The team will need some contribution from the bench to help win games this season. Players to watch: Corey Nelson and Ben Eberlin. “It is very rare to have two players their size with their combined athleticism at a 1A school,” Graner said.

Coach: Eric Bogle (first year) Last season’s record: 14-18 (5-5 WIVC) Carrollton returns nine players from last season. Key returners include guards Ethan Brannan and Kyle Leonard, and forward Jacob Graner. “Each of these returners are bringing back varsity playing experience, leadership and toughness,” Bogle said. “They are driven to improve and push their teammates to do the same. “I think Ethan Brannan and Jacob Graner are going to have a solid senior season,” the coach said. Key newcomers this year include

Cook should give the team a boost at the point. “To be successful we will need to be consistent in the things we do,” Dugan said. “If everyone buys into what we are doing and things fall into place, we could be a very competitive team. … It will be somewhat of a rebuilding year, but again, if things fall into place we could have a pretty good season. With the players we have returning and adding some of the juniors in the mix, we will have some different options of ways we can play.”
ILLINOIS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Coach: Larry Lawrence Sr. (5th year) Last season’s record: 7-15 Three ISD players return from last year, with one letter winner but no starters. Key losses: Shannon McNeal (14 ppg, 10 rpg), Dajour Wallace (11 ppg, 5 rpg, 2 spg, 3 apg), Jovany Carmona (11 ppg, 2 apg, 2 spg), Abdul Basit (6 ppg, 4 rpg), Jon Sander (8 ppg, 4 rpg, 2 spg) Key returner: Point guard James Hawkins (3.5 ppg, 1 apg) “Damontae Watkins and Antonio Robinson were new to the team last year but didn’t play significant minutes for us,” Lawrence said. “They could play huge roles if we’re to win this year.” Sophomore Anthony Starr will help bolster the Tigers at the point guard position this season. “We are smaller than the last five years, so rebounding and inside play will be a real challenge this year,” Lawrence said. “This team’s a blank canvas, I have no idea what they’re capable of. If they give everything they have night in and night out, I can accept whatever the outcome.”

We will be able to play between nine and ten deep throughout the season.” North Greene has several key newcomers who could make an impact, including 6-0 junior guard Dalton Mitchell. “Mitchell is an explosive slasher with a quick first step,” Vinyard said. “He also brings another above-average defender to the team this year.” … 6-4 junior forward Jacob Suttles. “Suttles is a long and lanky athletic presence,” the coach said. “Suttles attacks the rim and shoots the three-ball well. BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS score from the perimeter and inside the paint,” Vinyard said. “Ballard also brings another athletic player to the floor, who is also a solid rebounder.” Depth, speed and defense will be team strengths this season. The team has been working on ball control; turnovers hurt the Spartans last year. “We will need to get off to a quick start, and for the players to learn that we can trust each other — from the coaching staff down to every player,” Vinyard said. “There are always some lingering effects from a coaching change, and for me not to get any summer basketball time with the team will make for a learning experience the first few games. We will also have to limit our turnovers and value our possessions for things to go right this season.” Vinyard expects his team to be competitive this season. “We have all the pieces to compete at a high level by season’s end,” the coach said. “If the team buys into everything we preach, and progresses like we believe it can, we should be in contention for a conference and regional title at end of the year.”

We have a balanced team this year with players that were able to experience some big games as underclassmen. Hopefully, that will help fuel their desire to continue the strong tradition of Saukee basketball. “We will look for our guys to play with an enormous amount of energy on both ends of the floor, and utilize our depth. Hopefully, we can stay healthy throughout the season and will be playing our best basketball going into the regional tournament. We are looking forward to the upcoming season and continuing to improve.” The Saukees open their season with their own Thanksgiving tournament. “This is a tough opening week of basketball,” Tomhave said. “Hopefully, we can have a good showing against a solid field of opponents. The Macomb holiday Christmas tournament is always a good challenge/indicator of where we are at, at that point in the year. There are always high quality teams there that we could face. Hopefully, playing to this level will prepare us for our postseason. Our schedule is as tough as it has ever been, and we will need to be ready to play each and every night.”

Key newcomers include: Brayden Pettit, who will bring some scoring to the squad; Cade Privia, who will give the team increased toughness and rebounding in an expanded role; Max Rathgeb, who will add some ball handling; and Luke Smith, who will provide some outside shooting. “They play hard, share the ball really well, and I believe will be a fun group to watch,” Rathgeb said. Consistency, and good passing, will be essential this season. “We always hope to be good defensively,” the coach said, “and hoping this group will rebound really well.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS ROUTT
Coach: Will Whalen (5th season) Last season’s record: 19-10 (8-2 WIVC) Routt returns five players from last season, all letter winners. They include: 6-3 senior forward Adam Lindsey, a returning starter; 5-10 senior guard Ian Hayes; 6-1 junior guard Cory Ronan, a returning starter; 6-4 sophomore center Gus Abell; and 6-2 sophomore forward Braden Cors. Lindsey averaged 12.2 points per game last season and provides scoring, rebounding and leadership. Ronan (13.0 ppg) is a good scorer, ball handler and defensive player. Hayes is a solid outside shooter and leader. Abell, quick and mobile around the basket, will provide inside scoring. He’s a solid defensive player as well. Cors is a good outside shooter. The Rockets lost Dylan Marshall (12.8 points per game), Lucas May (5.5 ppg) and Drew Winters (12.3 ppg), but they gained a key piece in Jacksonville transfer Nick Cook. The 6-6 junior forward is a strong inside player with the ability to shoot from outside. Cook, Abell and Lindsey will give the Rockets a much better inside game this season. Playing good defense and limiting teams to one shot are critical for Routt this season, along with limiting turnovers.
