5 LAST-MINUTE IDEAS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY It's not too late to make this Small Business Saturday a success for your business.

By Syed Balkhi, Entrepreneur.com Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday that celebrates small businesses and it happens every year on the last Saturday of November. This big shopping day is a great way to promote your small business because unlike other popular shopping days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, you don’t have to compete with the big guys.

of the best ways to promote your Small Business Saturday deals too. With email marketing, you can send your subscribers an invitation to your Small Business Saturday event straight to their inboxes.

So, it’s important that you take advantage of Small Business Saturday this year if you want to attract more shoppers to your business and generate more sales. But, how can you stand out on Small Business Saturday and grab the attention of shoppers?

The email also creates urgency by using phrases like “don’t wait,” “one day only” and “don’t miss it.” Creating urgency will encourage shoppers to nab those awesome Small Business Saturday deals before it’s too late.

Check out these 5 ideas for a successful Small Business Saturday. 1. PUT UP SIGNAGE If you want to have a successful Small Business Saturday this year, first you need to remind your customers of the shopping holiday. So, be sure to put up signage in your small business weeks before the big day to inform shoppers and get them excited about the event. American Express, the creators of Small Business Friday, even offer customizable free signage and marketing materials like decals and posters you can use to promote Small Business Saturday to your customers. If your business doesn’t have a physical location, you can “put up signage” on your website. Make sure to display your Small Business Saturday promotions prominently on your homepage and consider creating a dedicated landing page for Small Business Saturday deals. 2. CREATE AN EMAIL MARKETING CAMPAIGN Email is one of the best ways to stay in touch with your customers—and it’s one

Take a look at this Small Business Saturday email from Forest Finds. In the email, Forest Finds thanks their loyal customers and lets them know that they can get 25 percent off their products during the upcoming event.

3. USE SOCIAL MEDIA AND RELEVANT HASHTAGS Your audience is on social media. In fact, according to Oberlo, 90.4 percent of Millenials, 77.5 percent of Generation X and 48.2 percent of Baby Boomers are active social media users. So, if you want to have a successful Small Business Saturday you need to be on social media too. To widen your reach, be sure to use relevant hashtags like #SmallBusinessSaturday, #SmallBizSat, #ShopSmall and #ShopLocal. 4. RUN A GIVEAWAY A great way to get shoppers excited about Small Business Saturday is by running a giveaway. Everyone loves winning a prize or getting a free gift so running a giveaway will give shoppers a little extra incentive to shop at your business on the last Saturday of November. Your business could hold an online giveaway where users have to share your post in order to enter. This will help get the word out about your Small Business Saturday promotions faster. You could also run a simple raffle at your business or

give away a free gift to the first 25 people that make a purchase. A giveaway is a great way to stir up excitement and turn casual shoppers into lifelong fans of your business.

social media posts, in your email newsletter and so on. Sharing your story will help your customers get to know the person behind the company and show them why they should support your business.

5. SHARE THE STORY OF YOUR BUSINESS

MAKE SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY YOUR OWN

Lastly, because Small Business Saturday is all about supporting local, small businesses, you should share your story. Sharing the story of your business will help you make connections and build meaningful relationships with your customers.

Get ready to have the most successful Small Business Saturday yet. With these tips, you can attract plenty of people that are interested in shopping at and supporting small businesses like yours.

So, let your customers know how you started your business and why you started it. You can share your story via signage,

Big Rapids Lions Club Donates Dictionaries

Picture – Students from St. Peter’s School display their new dictionaries

The Lions Club of Big Rapids carried out its long standing tradition of providing dictionaries to third grade students at the following schools - Riverview, Brookside, Crossroads Academy, St. Peter’s School, St. Mary School and Big Jackson. Due to the constraints of the pandemic, face to face presentation were not possible this year. In past years, Club members have had great fun working with the students to look up a word and talk about it. The magic word has been “aardvark”. The Club hopes that the 225 dictionaries that were provided to the students will be useful for both their academic and personal use.

A SEASON TO BE THANKFUL As we are starting to see the colors of fall fading away, we begin to prepare for the upcoming holiday season. Although this has been a challenging year unlike any other, we still have many things to be thankful for. The Mecosta County Visitors Bureau has proudly boasted local tourism taglines over the years, such as “The County for Every Season” and “Mother Nature’s Playground” for a reason. We are extremely fortunate to live in a community that is home to numerous outdoor recreational resources such as trails, waterways, golf courses, parks, state land access and more! Hunting and fishing have always been popular activities here in Mecosta County, and in accordance with Michigan’s DNR, the numbers of those who are new and returning outdoor enthusiasts continue to rise. There is nothing like getting outdoors, unplugging from your phone and zoom meetings, and just experiencing the sounds, smells and atmosphere of the woods in late fall and early winter.

Head to www.mecostacounty.com to the events tab for dates & to join the Chamber Connect group!

For my fellow deer hunters out there, bow season began October 1 and before we know it, opening day of firearms deer season will be here on November 15. Everything you need to know, the interactive public hunting map, deer check stations, to where you can purchase your hunting license here in Mecosta County (or even a link to purchasing your license online) can be found on our hunting webpage at: BigRapids.org/Hunting. Even during these times of

uncertainties, we are still able to get out and safely enjoy activities within our community. Check out the Things to Do tab on our website for a list of great ideas to explore with family and friends. Although many of our larger group gatherings have been rescheduled until next year, there are still events occurring. Be sure and check out our Community Events Calendar regularly for details on what is happening. If you know of a community event that we do not have listed, please let us know! You can do so by either adding the event yourself (with an option to submit an event at the top of our calendar page) or, contact us directly by email at: assistant@bigrapids.org. The holidays will be here soon. Remember to continue shopping and support our local businesses. Everyone on your list will enjoy a gift card to one of our unique restaurants, shops and/ or one of our local hotels. Even a local “staycation” to get out of the house and have a change of scenery, can do a lot to lift your spirits. If you are having a hard time choosing where to purchase your local gift, “Downtown Dollars” offered by the Big Rapids Downtown Businesses Association is a great option as well. They can be used at numerous downtown merchants. Check out the Big Rapids DBA website for details at: downtownbigrapids.com. No matter what your plans are this upcoming holiday season, make sure to plan time to get out and Explore the Big Rapids Region! Connie Koepke – Executive Director Mecosta County Visitors Bureau

5 WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR BUSINESS FOR THE HOLIDAYS By Jane Haskins, Esq., LegalZoom.com The leaves are barely starting to turn and yet it's time to start getting your business ready for the holiday season. Early planning is key to boosting profits and minimizing stress as you head into the final months of the year. If November and December are your busy season, here are five things you can do now to get ready.

1. Take Care of Things You've Been Putting Off If you've been considering changes that would help you bring in more customers or streamline your processes, put them in place now. These might mean a website update, an improved inventory tracking system, or some extra help with marketing. You won't have time to make big changes once the holiday shopping season begins. And, if you delay, you'll miss a golden opportunity to boost your business and make it run more smoothly.

2. Plan Your Marketing and Promotions Set aside time to strategically plan your holiday marketing. Use all the data you have, including what customers responded to last year, what the current trends are, and what you know about your loyal customers' needs and tastes. The internet is a great resource for creative ideas—just make sure they will work for your business. Identify the marketing channels that are most likely to give you a good return on your investment, whether this means Facebook ads, direct mail postcards, email campaigns, or traditional newspaper or radio advertising. Once you have planned your promotions, go ahead and order

your free giveaways, have direct mail and ad pieces designed, and create a timeline so you'll know exactly what you'll be launching when.

3. Hire and Train Seasonal Workers If you'll need extra staff during the holiday rush, start the hiring and training process early. Welltrained seasonal workers can ease the burden for full-time employees and help you deliver outstanding customer service. Without good training, though, seasonal employees can make life harder for your year-round staff and increase the chance that customers will have a bad experience that keeps them from coming back. Seasonal employees also increase the risk of accidents and theft at your workplace. An early hiring process gives you the time to adequately screen applicants, and proper training helps keep the workplace safe for everyone.

4. Establish Vacation Policies If you don't have a specific holiday vacation policy, now is the time to create one and communicate it to all your employees. Employees like to take time off around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but that may not be realistic. Without a clear policy that's communicated well in advance, feelings get hurt and morale suffers. Whether you use a first-come, first-served policy, one based on seniority, or some other system, try to be fair. Consider offering a perk to employees who volunteer to come in on holidays. And remember to comply with state and federal laws regarding overtime and holiday pay.

5. Plan Ways to Boost Employee Morale

The time from mid-November through the end of the year is stressful for many people, with family celebrations, social commitments, and the pressure to buy gifts and have fun during the holiday season. The pace at work increases, too. You can help your employees feel good about the holidays with careful planning: Office parties can become just another obligation in an already over-full calendar. Get staff input on what they'd enjoy most, even if it means you keep it simple and delay the big celebration until January. Consider decor that reflects your staff members' varied traditions and heritages. Don't assume that

everyone will be thrilled about the office Christmas tree. Consider supporting a charitable project. Let your staff choose a charity and match their contributions in some way. By establishing office holiday traditions, you can encourage your employees to come together as a team, helping improve morale at a stressful and busy time. The holidays can be both your most profitable time of year and your best opportunity to reach out to new customers. You can make the most of them by planning ahead.

On a sunny, warm, September evening six GFWC Big Rapids members covered a two mile stretch of highway M-20 picking up trash of various types as part of Highway Cleanup. Due to Covid-19 the spring cleanup was postponed so they found a lot of items for pickup. They filled 10 bags with various items including such things as car parts, face masks and 32 bottles and cans. Funds from the return of bottles and cans will be donated to the Boy Scout Camp fund and the tabs that were removed from the cans will go toward a donation for Ronald McDonald House. So not only were they able to clean up the area, but to support recycling and other organizations.

HOW BUSINESSES ARE PREPARING FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON DURING COVID-19

With 66% of consumers planning to do more holiday shopping online in 2020, business owners need to take steps to capture some of these sales. By Marcia Layton Turner, LegalZoom.com Even though the holiday retail season will certainly be unconventional this year due to the pandemic, it will come nonetheless. Business owners who are prepared for a new normal will reap the benefits. Companies that can serve both shoppers from afar and reassure those who venture out that they are safe have the biggest opportunities for a strong holiday sales season. "Safety" is the watchword this year, with "online" being one solution. The good news is that consumer shopping plans appear to be relatively unaffected. A Radial consumer survey regarding holiday shopping reported that "despite the impact of COVID-19, shoppers do not plan to significantly change their holiday spend compared to 2019. However, the data did reveal a stronger preference for online shopping, with 66% of shoppers anticipating they will increase their online purchases during the 2020 holiday season." Here's what some businesses are doing to entice shoppers to buy from them this winter. CONVERT IN-PERSON SERVICES TO VIRTUAL Aware that many shoppers are uncomfortable browsing in-store, Ray Pugsley, owner of Potomac River Running, rolled out an At-Home Virtual Shoe Fitting. Through a scheduled Zoom or phone call, customers can get the same attention they would in person. "One of the expert staff members will walk you through the fit process and discuss injuries and current goals," Pugsley explains. At the end of the fitting, customers can buy and pay online. OFFER GIFT WRAPPING Pugsley offers customers gift wrapping and expedites orders to ensure they arrive

in time for holiday celebrations. Adding such flourishes for your online customers may entice them to choose your business over a competitor. ADD CURBSIDE SERVICE An October 2020 New York Times article reported that curbside service, with buyers purchasing goods online and then driving "the last mile" to pick them up outside the store, has increased dramatically during the pandemic. "Target said its curbside sales grew more than 700% in the last quarter, while Best Buy reported nearly $5 billion in online revenue in the second quarter, a company record, and said 41% of that had come from curbside or in-store pickup," according to the article. BEEF UP INVENTORY SELECTION With social distancing, customers may want to make fewer store visits and get as much as they can at each stop. "Shoppers became used to buying most of what they need at just one or two stores, as opposed to shopping around," says Eric Grindley, founder and CEO of Esquire Advertising. "As a result, retailers with a limited selection of merchandise are finding it more difficult to attract business. To get the most out of this holiday season, retailers will need to ensure that they remain fully stocked and address any store backlogs." HIRE EXTRA HELP Besides having products in stock, ensuring you have enough workers available to assist customers or get products shipped is essential, says Jerry Han, chief marketing executive at PrizeRebel. "With additional hands to help, your business can cater to the demands of customers better," he says. "Failure to increase employee size would mean delayed customer service and slow restocking of supplies."

RAMP UP CORRESPONDENCE The effects of social distancing include feelings of isolation and loneliness, so one thing businesses can do this year is reconnect with past customers. "The best way to show holiday appreciation this season will be by sending a personal note or gift through the mail"— handwritten, preferably, says Rick Elmore, founder and CEO of Simply Noted. "Sending a handwritten note is a way to stand out from the impersonal e-cards and easy-tosend photo cards."

This approach can bring your company name to the fore at a time when consumers are buying more products and services than usual. This holiday season, being ready means being fully stocked, serving customers wherever they are comfortable interacting—online or even from their car outside your store—and ensuring you have the human power available to avoid any delay. Flexibility and adaptability will be critical.
