Did You Know? Homeowners rely heavily on electricity to power their homes and their lives. Coal, nuclear power and water energy help to generate this electricity. Without electricity, lights wouldn’t work, digital devices wouldn’t charge and cities would come grinding to a halt. This is experienced on a local level when power outages occur. Homeowners may need to diversify some of the resources they have at home to be able to make it through an electrical power outage successfully. Investing in solar power panels can be one way to generate electricity even when power has been disrupted. In addition, pellet stoves or woodburning stoves can serve as alternative heat sources as well as cooking surfaces if traditional forced air systems are rendered useless during an electrical outage. Homes equipped with a coal-fired smoker can complement gas-powered grills for outdoor cooking as well for those who have electric ranges and ovens. Solar-powered device chargers can provide power to phones or tablets during electrical outages. Having a few different options on hand can help people make it through power outages unscathed.

Change your furnace filter

Why is it so important to change your furnace filter? Let’s review some of the best reasons. SAVES MONEY When your air filter is functioning properly, your HVAC system runs more efficiently. This conserves energy, lowering your utility bill. It also prevents the need for future repairs, which makes the upfront cost of replacement filters much more appealing. INCREASES FURNACE LIFESPAN A clogged filter can result in an overworked system, reducing your furnace’s lifespan and turning “replacement time” into a necessity rather than an option. IMPROVES AIR QUALITY An old furnace filter loses its ability to trap pollutants and allergens. Dirty air is circulated, causing health concerns. A new filter captures these allergens, making the air being circulated safe to breathe. 6

REDUCES REPAIRS Regularly changing your furnace filter keeps other problems at bay. A clean filter means fewer repairs. INCREASES ENERGY EFFICIENCY As already mentioned, an efficient system produces efficient energy use. A clean filter helps prevent energy waste. KEEPS HOME CLEAN Do you enjoy breathing fresh air? That is the air filter’s job. A clean filter results in clean air, which results in happy skin, eyes and lungs. How often should you change your furnace’s air filter? • High-efficiency filters do not need to be Your Next Home • December 2020

changed as often • Your furnace filter will likely need to be changed in peak seasons of use, such as winter (heating) and summer (air conditioning). During these periods of frequent system use, you should check your filter monthly and replace it as needed. • Households containing pets or smokers typically require regular filter changes. More contaminants in the air such as pet hair, dander and smoking byproducts result in clogged filters. • Look for a manufacturer recommendation on your air filter’s packaging that lists the filter’s standard lifespan.

HOME A vast migration takes place when the temperatures begin to drop in the northernmost areas of the United States and even parts of Canada. No, it has nothing to do with feathered friends finding new roosts or certain mammals getting ready to hibernate. This migration involves the thousands upon thousands of people who retreat from one residence to head to another. Snowbirds, as these migratory people are often called, are primarily retirees who split their living arrangements based on weather. Many spend the spring and summer months in one residence, generally in the northern portion of the country. Once the mercury begins to drop there, they trade that home for another in a more temperate locale, such as Florida, Louisiana, Texas, or even overseas. The Palm Beach Post reports that about 145,000 snowbirds flock to Palm Beach County alone each winter, raising the population by around 11 percent, according to the county’s official figures. Across Florida, an estimated 900,000 to one million seasonal residents stay a month or more every winter. When snowbirds or other people leave their homes for extended periods of time, it is essential that they winterize properties that will sit vacant for months. 8

How to winterize a vacant home

Protect against home damage • Consider turning off the water supply completely if you will be away for an extended period of time; otherwise, a burst pipe may result in significant damage. • Drain all water in pipes by opening the faucets and flushing the toilets to clear the water from the tanks and bowls. Place non-toxic antifreeze in the toilet bowls to prevent any remaining water from freezing. • If you will not be draining pipes and turning off the water, set the heating system to 55 F or higher to help keep the interior and wall cavities warm. • Keep room and cabinet doors open to allow heat to circulate to areas where pipes are located. • Shut off the water to outdoor faucets as well as the washing machine. • Close up openings to the house so that rodents and insects cannot get inside and use a home for shelter. Keep safe with snow and ice • Make sure that gutters are free of debris, which Your Next Home • December 2020

can lead to potential ice dams and water collection around the foundation of the home. • Hire someone to clear the sidewalks and driveway of snow and ice. • Remove any tree branches that can be weighed down by snow and ice and fall onto the property. Make the home look lived in • Forward mail to your winter address, stop newspaper delivery and arrange to have any package deliveries picked up while you’re away. • Put motion-sensitive exterior lights and interior lights on timers. Set lights to come on at various times to discourage thieves or squatters. • Ensure the alarm system is in good working order. • Use deadbolts to secure doors and windows. These steps and others can help protect a home while residents are away.

Use a ladder

Ladders are probably the most sensible and practical option if you are doing tasks that require climbing and reaching high places. Although they are not usually our first choice, using a ladder instead of a chair or stool can make a job easier. WHEN TO USE LADDERS If your task requires you to do something two feet above your head such as changing light bulbs or cleaning the top of your cabinets, ladders are your best options rather than make shift ladders. PAINTING THE HOUSE Painting at heights is never easy, therefore use a ladder that is really sturdy because you’re likely using it for a good amount of time. A ladder with a strong base will keep you from sliding with your every movement. DOING CARPENTRY Carpenters work above ground most of the time which is why they usually invest in high quality ladders. The best type of ladders when doing carpentry are those that have extension options. CLEANING THE ROOF Most of us clean our roofs ourselves although some might call a professional service for help. Cleaning the roof is also a dangerous task that requires extra safety measures. A high quality ladder is important when getting rid of leaves and foreign objects on your roof. 12

HOME USE • Hanging decorations - Ladders are very essential to everyone who frequently tackles with decorating their homes. Whether hanging a picture or decorating a tree, a ladder can give you the best support while climbing and as you do your home projects. The same goes for hanging lights on your outdoor trees or gutters. • Hanging plants – Plants make every home more interesting. Be sure to use a ladder so you can safely place your indoor plants without worrying about falling. • Storing in high locations – Seasonal items are usually stored on the highest shelving. • Cleaning the house –Ladders are essential when it’s time to clean the house. Cobwebs, molds and mildews can form anywhere including hard to reach places.. • When fixing or changing a light bulb – The proper way to fix and change a bulb is to do it safely with a reliable ladder, plus you’ll be twisting and turning which makes it even more important. Must-haves to achieve a holiday wonderland

The end of the year marks a period of heightened festivity. Come the holiday season, homes and businesses are decorated and everyone seems to have an extra spring in their step. The sight of snowflakes, candy canes, evergreen wreaths, and Christmas trees can elicit nostalgia for happy holidays of the past, as well as excitement for what is yet to come. When it comes to decorating for the holidays, there are certain items that set the scene. Christmas trees Germany is credited with starting the modern Christmas tree tradition. It dates back to the 16th century when devout Christians brought trees into their homes and decorated them. German settlers brought Christmas tree traditions to America upon their arrival in Pennsylvania in the 19th century.

Lights Lights are commonly seen during the holiday season. The custom of having holiday lights dates back to when Christmas trees were decorated with candles, which symbolized Christ being the light of the world. These traditions evolved from pagan rituals that would celebrate the return of light of the sun as the days grow longer after the winter solstice.

Mistletoe Mistletoe is known as the “kissing plant and it is customary for couples to kiss while standing beneath the plant, typically hung in doorways and arches. Mistletoe was once hung to drive off evil spirts and ensure fertility. Kissing under the mistletoe was first found associated with the Greek festival of Saturnalia and later with primitive marriage rites.

Yule log Many families burn a yule log in the fireplace and watch it burn while listening to Christmas carols. The familiar custom of burning the log dates back to solstice celebrations and the tradition of bonfires. The Christmas tradition called for burning a portion of the log each evening until Twelfth Night, also known as the Epiphany, which takes place on January 6.

Poinsettias Poinsettias are a tropical plant that originated in Mexico. Joel Roberts Poinsett was the first Ambassador from the United States to Mexico. He became enamored with the plants, and brought them back to his native South Carolina. An old Mexican legend suggests a poor girl had nothing to offer baby Jesus at Christmas Eve services, so she picked a handful of weeds and put them at the bottom of the nativity scene. These weeds burst into bright red flowers and became known as “Flores de Noche Buena,” or “Flowers of the Holy Night.” Holiday decorations borrow traditions from all over the world to help establish a festive wonderland.

HOME Comfort takes center stage each winter. As people look to stay warm, many may be quick to turn up the thermostat so their entire home is toasty warm. But much like cranking air conditioners during the dog days of summer, turning up the thermostat each time the winter winds begin blowing can prove costly for homeowners. According to estimates from the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association, homeowners spent an average of $911 on home heating costs in the winter of 2019-20. The winter of 202021 could prove even more expensive, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to force much of the world to practice social distancing. That means many professionals are still working from home full-time, while even those who aren’t are no doubt spending more of their free time at home. All those hours spent at home figure to increase reliance on heaters this winter, which means heating bills are likely to go up as the temperatures go down. Finding ways to save on heating costs will no doubt prove a priority for many homeowners this winter, and the following are some ways to do just that. 16

Simple ways to save on heating costs this winter

• Add insulation. Extra insulation throughout the house can dramatically reduce home heating (and cooling) costs. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation in attics, crawl spaces and basement rim joists can help homeowners save as much as 15 percent on heating costs. • Lower the temperature on your water heater. Another way to trim your energy bill this winter is to lower the temperature on your water heater. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that, for every 10 F reduction in temperature on their water heaters, homeowners can save between 3 and 5 percent on their water heating costs. • Close the flue on your fireplace. Fireplaces can keep a home’s inhabitants warm in winter, but only when they’re in use. When they’re not being used, fireplaces can allow heat to escape a home. When the fireplace is not being used, close Your Next Home • December 2020

the flue to prevent heat from escaping the house. Keeping all windows and doors closed throughout the day is another way to prevent unnecessary heat loss. • Have your HVAC system serviced before winter begins. Inefficient HVAC systems cost homeowners considerable amounts of money each year. Annual maintenance performed by a certified HVAC professional can ensure filters are clean and operating at peak efficiency, saving homeowners the costly trouble of having to turn up the thermostat to overcome dirty systems. Home heating costs figure to increase this winter as people spend more time at home. Various simple strategies can help homeowners stay warm without overpaying to heat their homes this winter. At Carter Lumber in Ludington, we make the transition into a new home as painless as possible. We have years of experience helping new residents turn their new homes into the permanent home of their dreams.

Your garage can save you money

When you are looking for creative ways to save money on your home or business energy costs, consider insulating the garage. For many homeowners, the garage is a multi-functional space used to store equipment, protection from the elements, or even an entertainment space. If you’re having a hard time deciding if your garage needs to be insulated, consider the following questions to aid you in your decision. Purpose The first step is determining the purpose of the space. The primary purpose for insulation is to control the heat flow and maintain a consistent temperature. If temperature control, protection, and functionality are important to you, the next step is to decide which type of insulation you will need. Selection Insulating a garage can increase your energy savings, act as a soundproofing barrier, and overall make your garage a more comfortable space. If you’ve decided it is the best option, consider the following most common insulation options and their facts: • Fiberglass: Most commonly used insulation available in batts, rolls, or loose-fill. Paperface is an ideal option for those looking to add 18

a vapor barrier and give the walls a slightly finished look. • Cellulose: Ideal for already finished walls and ceilings as it is loose-fill. Most commonly blown into the area, cellulose is made of recycled newspapers that has been treated with fire retardant material. • Rigid Foam: Used in walls, floors, and ceilings, rigid foam insulation is thin material with the ability to customize size to fit any area. Sold in 4 x 8 sheets, this expanded polystyrene foam board is a quick and easy way to insulate. Finish Create a clean and polished look by adding drywall to your walls and ceiling. This step will open new doors to a variety of finishing options to complete your space such as paint, shiplap, trim, and much more. Your Next Home • December 2020

Did You Know? The holiday season is rife with tradition. Some holiday traditions, such as holiday lighting displays, are impossible to miss, while others are more subtle and possibly even unknown to many celebrants. One tradition that falls into the latter category involves the placing of oranges into Christmas stockings. The origins of Christmas stockings are rooted in legend, and one of the more popular tales involves a widowed father of three beautiful girls. According to Smithsonian.com, this father was struggling to make ends meet and was concerned that his financial struggles would affect his daughters’ ability to find a spouse. As the legend goes, St. Nicholas was wandering through the man’s town and heard of his concerns. Recognizing that the man was unlikely to accept charity, St. Nicholas slid down the chimney of his house and placed three gold balls in the girls’ recently laundered stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry. The value of the gold balls, which were discovered the following morning, was enough to ensure the girls could eventually wed. So what does that have to do with oranges? Those who wanted to replicate the tale could not so easily come upon gold balls to place in stockings, so they chose something similar in appearance: oranges.

Strategies to recession-proof your finances

“Financial planning” is an umbrella term that can be applied to various aspects of money management. Many people associate financial planning with retirement. However, effective financial planning can help people confront today’s challenges just as much as it can help them prepare for their golden years. The pandemic that spread across the globe throughout 2020 posed numerous challenges, including a recession sparked by widespread job loss and declines in economic activity. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that the unemployment rate in the United States exceeded 10 percent in July 2020, while Statistics Canada reported the Canadian unemployment rate was just under 11 percent in that same month. While each country has since witnessed declines in their respective unemployment rates, tens of millions of workers in both nations remain out of work. The sudden rise in unemployment and decline in global economic activity underscores the need to plan for recessions, even during those times when economies are thriving. Taking steps to recession-proof your finances is an important component of financial planning that can help people overcome the stress of living during a downturn.

• Build up your savings. A recent poll from the

Kaiser Family Foundation found that 45 percent of adults said their mental health had been negatively affected due to stress related to the virus. That poll was conducted in March, shortly after lockdown measures 20

were instituted and the term “social distancing” entered the North American lexicon. As the pandemic wore on through the summer, fall and into the winter, stress remained a big concern for many people. Much of that stress stemmed from the economy, but one way to ease that stress is to have a substantial amount of money in savings. Each person’s financial needs are different, but many planners recommend clients have at least six months’ worth of expenses in their savings as a cushion to help them get through job loss.

• Pay down debt. Debt, particularly high-interest

debt, can compromise your ability to save. A 2019 survey from Bankrate.com found that 13 percent of Americans admitted that debt was preventing them from saving more money. Pay down debt like credit cards and only make credit card purchases if you have the money to pay the bill in full when it’s due.

• Avoid overspending. Many financial planners recommend a 50-30-20 approach to money management. Such an approach advises people to devote 50 percent of their earnings to needs, 30

Your Next Home • December 2020

percent to their wants and 20 percent to savings. Spending more than 30 percent on wants can make it difficult to build up a savings account to levels that can protect you in the event of a recession.

• Expect the unexpected. The American economy was doing historically well as recently as January, only to have the bottom fall out during the pandemic. If you want to recession-proof your finances, do not take your foot off the gas in regard to insulating yourself from the next recession. No matter how strongly the economy is performing, continue to expect the unexpected and prioritize saving so you have a soft landing awaiting you should the economy again take a sudden turn for the worse. The timing of recessions is unpredictable, but they are inevitable. Effective financial planning can help anyone overcome the challenges posed by economic downturns.

Give your home the protection it deserves. Your home is where you make some of your best memories, and that’s worth protecting.

Winterize your vehicle

We all know winter can bring hazardous driving conditions and nothing is worse than being unprepared. Vehicle safety is especially important when colder days hit. Follow these safety measures to make the journey through winter easier, safer, and smarter. Service Battery – Cold temperatures can reduce the power of your battery. Routine maintenance checks can save you from being stranded in the cold with a dead battery. Having jumper cables in your vehicle is an extra precaution that can save not just your battery life but potentially someone else’s. Brakes – When icy roads hit, so do the brakes. Make sure your brake pads aren’t worn out and are working properly. Prevent sliding by going a safe speed during winter conditions to prevent slamming on the breaks and possibly sliding into unplanned areas. Heat/Defrost – We all like a warm vehicle during the chilly months. Check your heat/defrost controls to make sure they are working properly and can keep your windshield clear of unwanted fog and moisture. Visibility is vital. Installing heavy duty winter wipes pushes snow, ice, and other winter debris off your windshield to ensure a clear visual of the road. Tires – Consider switching to winter tires to improve grip on the road and resist cold temperatures. 22

Composed of tread patterns and rubber compounds designed for optimum traction, winter tires are always a good safety precaution especially if your neck of the woods gets hit with heavy snowfall. Maintain Tire Pressure – Maintaining accurate PSI levels in your tires help traction, handling, and durability. Refilling as necessary is vital to keep control of your vehicle on icy roads. Washer Fluid – Mixing half antifreeze and half washer fluid can prevent coolant in your radiator from freezing while keeping your windshield clear and clean. In colder conditions, antifreeze aids in keeping washer fluid from sticking and freezing to your windshield. Safety Ensuring your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit, extra clothing, shovels, scrapers, and other tools can give you ease of mind in case an accident or emergency does happen.
