In football, the Red Hawks return after a 5-5 season that saw them in the playoffs. Red Hawks coach Scott Cuthrell said the team is gearing up, and the goal of early practices is to be ready for the first game.

“We have a tough schedule,” he added. “We’re not only playing the best in the east, but the best in the west. Beal City is a top team in Division 8. We have to take it week by week. The kids are doing really well. Our focus point, going into each week, is that we expect to do well.” Cuthrell said the returning corps of players gelled together last season. “This group has played a lot of basketball and baseball together, so it’s a group that really comes together,” he said. “We’re really impressed with the way they work. They know what’s going on. They know the system. So, it’ll come down to true grit to see who they are.” The biggest point of the early practices, according to Cuthrell, is to do the right thing. “We have to get our system down and understand what we’re doing,” he said. “I want to make sure we’re ready for Week 1, and we’ll be in good shape.” “We’re excited,” he added. “The kids are working hard. A lot of good things are coming out of this group.”

“Everything that we do in the off-season is meant to move forward, so we can be a contender for the Greater Thumb East title,” he said. “That’s something we’ve been working on for the last 15 to 20 years, winning a league title.”

While the team has lost Abbey Halabis, Olivia Graff, Laci Anthony, and Kalee Gray, the team returns Saylar Cuthrell, Shelby Ignash, Kacee Gray, Kayley Salcido, Madalyn Gniewek and Reese Grady. “We have some elite athletes that can play all six slots,” Amy said. “Our youth from last season continue to develop and will be physically and emotionally stronger. They now have the experience to handle tough situations.” Amy Cuthrell also commented that volleyball in the Thumb is some of the best in the state. “We have championshipstateteams like Reese and USA who have set the bar high, and are only miles apart,” she said. “Their programs have had the advantage because of their strong tradition and power athletes. Bad Axe has some strong athletes as well and they will be ready to compete. In this game, its anyone’s night any day of the week.” “We have created a schedule where we will play some of the best; especially on the weekends,” she added. “I only ask that each set we give 100% and continue to get better while we await the postseason.”

In volleyball, Amy Cuthrell returns for her seventh year. The team went 34-8 last season, losing in the regional finals to the eventual state champion, “WeReese.have some unfinished business and are hopeful to have a healthy season to complete any set goals,” Amy Cuthrell said. “We really don’t chat about winning but rather about the ‘do better’ concept. This alone will take us where we want to go.”

In boys soccer, Chris Smith returns for his second season. The Lakers finished 3-8-1 last season. Smith feels his team strengths are that the team is quick with great field vision, communication, and distributing the ball. “We want to come together as a team and win the conference,” he said. “Last year, we were young. This year, we have that experience we missed. We have a full schedule this season with a home tournament, which will only help build more experience. We should be more competitive this season and improve a lot.”
While the team loses Nathanael Carter, Tom Maniguet, Juan Castro and Tristan Kipp, Issaac Ward, Jack Turner and Nick McCleary will be key pieces to the team’s success.

The Lakers finished 9-3 last season, sharing the Greater Thumb West title and winning a district title in Division 7. “We won’t get any easy weeks,” LeVasseur said. “We will have to play tough, physical football every week in order to reach our goals.”
“The league should be wide open,” Smith said. “It should be a competitive race for a league championship. Endurance in the second half, especially playing the whole field, spreading things out, working as a team and not as individuals, are what it will take to win a league championship.” Here are the schedules for the varsity teams.

LeVasseur also mentioned the goals for the Lakers, which include a Greater Thumb West title and a state championship. “Our focus is on mental toughness and commitment,” he said. “We need to stay within our boundaries and use our commitment and mental toughness to help carry us. Our kids have been very focused this off-season and we want to get that win inside on Week 14.”

The Pirates finished 6-4 last season, losing to Ubly in the opening round of the playoffs. Schelke said a few key returners for this season are Tanton Babcock, Jace Knoblock, Cade Robbenbuck, Jacob Booms, and Levi Klaski. “Tanton is a play-maker at quarterback,” he said. “Jacob is a solid runner.” The goals for the Pirates this season are to improve and develop each day, and to play hard, tough, disciplined football. “We want to do our best,” Schelke said. “The Greater Thumb East will be different with Cass City pivoting to the division for this season.”

In football, coach Eric Sweeney returns for his fourth season. The Bearcats are coming off a 12-1 season, which saw a Greater Thumb East title and regional championship.

“We have a very experienced team returning this year,” Sweeney said. “We have four players that are third-year starters this year. The work ethic this far has been outstanding.” A key focus on practices has been to improve week by week. The Bearcats open at Bad Axe in Week 1. “They have been our Week 9 opponent for years, so it will be different seeing them so early,” Sweeney said. Sweeney also said it will be a battle for the Greater Thumb East. “Harbor Beach returns an outstanding quarterback, and he has lots of athleticism around him,” he said. “Cass City moves over to the East this year after having a very young team last year. I expect them to be very solid also. Sandusky is always a battle for us. Coach Jacobson is a very good coach that always has his players prepared.” In volleyball, coach Aaron Mueller returns for his seventh season. The Lady Bearcats are coming off a 32-9 season, which saw a Greater Thumb East title and a regional championship. “We have some tough servers,” Mueller said. “We want to be competitive in our league and beyond.” A goal for the Lady Bearcats this season is to be competitive, and grow throughout the season. “We are very young this year and many players lack experience at the varsity level,” he said. “We hope to make a nice run at the end of the season. Marlette should be really tough this year in league play.”
