While area kids were still able to auction off their animals virtually this year, the Huron Community Fair also fell victim to the coronavirus, as it was canceled for 2020. We’ll have to wait for next year to enjoy a ride on the midway and an elephant ear. (Tribune File Photo)
Summer of 2020: The summer that wasn’t When I began my job as editor of the Huron Daily Tribune a little more than a year ago, all I heard about was the large number of awesome summertime events. I started the week after the Cheeseburger in Caseville festival had wrapped up. I missed the Huron Community Fair. There were still some neat events in the fall. My first was the Kinde Polka Fest, which was a lot bigger and more entertaining than I thought it would be. But I couldn’t wait until this summer to experience all the great things that Summer in Huron County has to offer. We were almost there. Eric Young And then March hit, and so did the coronavirus pandemic, and became clear almost immediately that this wasn’t going to be the summer any of us had expected. First the Michigan Sugar Festival was canceled. Then it was one event after another, until there were barely any left. Despite the lack of events, however, people still managed to find things to do around the Thumb this summer. Some events remained on track. The Port Austin Porch Fest seems like it was created for social distancing, and went off without a hitch. While the Cheeseburger was postponed until next summer, Caseville residents were still able to enjoy a Slice of Cheeseburger in its place. The kids still were able to auction their animals off, even though there wasn’t a
While we did get a Slice of Cheeseburger this year, we didn’t get to enjoy the huge crowds and full festivities of the Cheeseburger in Caseville Festival, as it was canceled this year. Campgrounds were packed once they were reopened. People enjoyed the beach and the lake towns enjoyed even more interest in their activities like kayaking and boating. Restaurants learned how to cater to outdoor dining, and the Thumb stayed resilient and kept moving. That’s one thing I’ve learned since I began working out here. People in the Thumb are determined, and they’re not going to let something like a pandemic keep them down. People found ways to be safely entertained, changed their summer plans, and got after it just like they

in the Upper Thumb. Some people died as a result, and one death is one too many.
But for the most part, we were able to stay resilient from the dangers and still find things to do this summer. It wasn’t the summer I was hoping for. It certainly wasn’t what I expected. I never expected to spend five months working from my living room without stepping foot in the office. I was looking forward to getting out to all of these great events, experiencing them and meeting more and more people. But that will have to wait a little longer. Thankfully, I’m not planning on going anywhere. The pandemic isn’t over. With kids going back to school and temperatures beginning to cool, we’re likely not out of the woods just yet. Numbers are decreasing, but there’s a good chance they’ll rise again before they go away. While summer is unofficially drawing to a close, there are still canceled events that are no longer in our future. The Polka Fest I attended last year? I’ll have to wait until 2021 to experience it again. There is still a lot of uncertainty, but one thing is for certain — the Thumb will pull through. While there weren’t a lot of events that happened this summer, there were a few. Enjoy a look back at what we did get to enjoy throughout this edition of the Thumb Resorter. Harbor Beach veterans remember fallen brothers Veterans from American Legion Post No. 197 and VFW No. 9344 in Harbor Beach placed American flags at the graves of fellow veterans at Our Lake of Lake Huron, Rock Falls and Helena St, Anthony cemeteries on Thursday, May 21. VFW trustee George Wesels organized the Memorial Day weekend flag distribution, something he’s done for the past few years. He took over duties after the previous organizer passed away, and he has spent a great deal of time working to chart the locations of veteran gravesites in the area. Wesels and about a dozen other volunteers, most fellow veterans, placed a total of 716 flags at graves among the three cemeteries. Wesels, who has become something of a local historian in the course of his work, said veterans interred in Harbor Beach’s cemeteries include a number of Civil War veterans, a veteran of the Mexican-American War and one man who served in the FrancoPrussian War. In place of the Grand Parade, the Michigan Sugar Company hosted its own mini-parade though Sebewaing in place of the annual Michigan Sugar Festival, which was canceled. The parade featured Sebewaing firefighters, police, EMS and the newly crowned 2020 Michigan Sugar Queen and attendants. The queen and her court handed out 500 two-pound bags of sugar to those in attendance. (Mark Birdsall/Huron Daily Tribune)

CHARITY ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Lighthouses
Charity Island Lighthouse was established in 1857, and currently is privately owned. It stands in ruins at the northwest tip of Big Charity Island. Visit www.charityisland.net for more information.
HARBOR BEACH LIGHTHOUSE
The Harbor Beach Lighthouse is located at the end of the north breakwater entrance to the harbor of refuge. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society has been working with city officials to preserve the historic landmark.
PORT AUSTIN REEF LIGHT
Port Austin Reef Light is located in Lake Huron, 2 1/2 miles north of the Village of Port Austin. Construction was completed in 1878.
POINTE AUX BARQUES LIGHTHOUSE
The original Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse was constructed of stone taken from the shore of Lake Huron in 1848. The keeper’s house and separate tower were located on a three acre clearing hacked out of the dense wilderness. By 1857, the ravages of shoreline weather and a fire in the interior of the house created the need for a new structure. The new keeper’s house and attached 89-foot tower were built of the finest brick available. The light is still an active aid to navigation, making Pointe aux Barques one of the oldest continuously operating Lights on the Great Lakes. In 1875, a Class A lifesaving station was constructed 300 yards south of the lighthouse. It was the first lifesaving station opened on the Great Lakes. The 62 year history of the station credits over 200 rescues to this station and its brave crews. The Thumb Bottomland Preserve surrounding Pointe aux Barques contains 105 known wrecks, reflecting the danger posed by shoals surrounding Pointe aux Barques. The Pointe aux Barques keeper’s house and tower have been completely restored and contain historical artifacts from a bygone era. The museum is open to the public free of charge and donations are appreciated to help fund the society’s projects. The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse is located six miles north of Port Hope off M-25 on Lighthouse Road in Lighthouse County Park. Roaring through the 1920s with Port Austin Village Green
Village Green hosts successful 1920s lawn party BY PAIGE WITHEY paige.withey@hearstnp.com PORT AUSTIN - The shops of Port Austin’s Village Green traveled back in time on Thursday August 6 with its 1920 Theme Thursday event, highlighting Port Austin’s history with lawn signs showcasing photographs of the town 100 years ago as well as vintage cars parked on the Village Green lawn. A decorated community space, live music, photo booth, and shopkeepers dressed to match the theme all contributed to achieving the 1920s lawn party aesthetic. While the outside event did not require masks, many customers supporting the shops attended the event in their own masks. Masks were also available for purchase for those interested. Local businesses featured at the Village Green include Country Lyfe – A Michigan Shop, Baubles on the Bay, Port Austin Coffee, Mumzie’s, The Blumerie, Urban Crown, Dizzy Daisy, and Michigan Sky Media. Theme Thursdays continued throughout the summer to encourage the community to shop local during the week.
