Some of the bands include Jimmy Buffet tribute bands and classic rock bands. Prices for concerts varies. It’s $7 for a day pass, or $15 for all nine days. Louwers said the festival is the largest family festival in Michigan, with him estimating that around 100,000 people will show up to Caseville throughout those 10 days. “(Cheeseburger) is steadily getting bigger and better every year,” he said. Louwers said the festival has been able to go on for so long because of the appeal of the tropical theme. Along with that, he said the festival has a huge economic impact on the town of Caseville.

Huron Nature Center’s Three Sisters Festival centers around Thumb history First-ever event hopes for a great turnout BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer UPPER THUMB – The Huron Nature Center will be holding its first-ever Three Sisters Festival in August, giving people a chance to eat meals made from authentic ingredients. On Saturday, Aug. 24, starting at 10 a.m., the nature center will be hosting a Reg Pettibone’s Authentic Native American Program display of artifacts. They will also be serving meals with food made from corn, beans and squash, said Caitlin Stone-Weber, a naturalist at the nature center. She said they’re using these foods for the festival is because it’s a Native American tradition called the Three Sisters. She said the food served will be bean soup, corn on the cob and a squash-based dessert. The ingredients will also be local, she said. Along with the food, people will be able to see and learn about Native American culture and artifacts. These includes hunting tools, turtle rattles and bags, beadwork, furs, buffalo hides, and tipi displays. There will also be hands-on activities, like a game where kids can throw tomahawks made from bean bags and cardboard. The event will be free besides the food, which is $4 a meal. Stone-Weber said she expects a similar turnout to their Lady Slipper Festival, which was around 1,000 people. She said that it’s important for people to come so they can receive feedback about the festival, and to learn about the Thumb’s rich history. “I’m hoping that people will leave here understanding that we really have an incredible past that has really shaped our area, and develop an appreciation and better understanding of it,” Stone-Weber said.

Caseville’s Parade of Tropical Fools set for Aug. 14

The annual Parade of Tropical Fools is making its return to the Cheeseburger in Caseville festival. Here are scenes from last year’s fun and excitement. (Tribune File Photos)

Tens of thousands expected to attend BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer CASEVILLE — In the middle of the huge Cheeseburger in Caseville festival comes a gigantic parade called the Parade of Tropical Fools. At 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, the parade will march its way through Caseville in front of tens of thousands of people. Steve Louwers, president of the Caseville Area Chamber of Commerce, said the parade typically lasts for around an hour and a half. It starts on Huron Street and will then turn onto to Main Street up to the Caseville County Park. Louwers said the parade will have an overall tropical theme, with around 100 floats being a part of it. He said many of the floats pay homage to cheeseburgers and Jimmy Buffet. One of the craziest floats he’s seen at the Parade of Tropical Fools was over 160 feet, and featured a DJ and live band on opposite ends of the float. He said there will be cash prizes for the best small,

medium and large floats. Louwers also said 15 plaques are handed out to floats for creativity under specific subcatagories. In order to negate early birds, Louwers said people are not allowed to set up chairs to watch the parade until midnight of that Wednesday. He said there

tends to be a huge party at that time. Louwers anticipates around a whopping 40,000 to 50,000 people to turn up to see the parade. In fact, he said the route had to be elongated in order to accommodate the massive crowds. He said it’s easily the largest day of the Cheeseburger festival.

New bar and grill gives Port Austin a ‘local’ feel to it Lake Street Local is serving up quality food and drinks BY SETH STAPLETON Tribune Staff Writer PORT AUSTIN — A bar and grill centered around quality, affordable food and drinks recently opened up in Port Austin. Lake Street Local, located at 8708 Lake St., has been open for nearly two months and is well received by the community. “We’ve definitely gotten a ton of support from the local people,” said owner Ryan Detrick. “The local crowd has definitely supported us so far.” Detrick owns the business with his wife Michelle. He has former ties to the community, and moved back to the area he once called home to pursue the dream of owning his own restaurant/bar. In September of last year, the couple began talks of purchasing the former Sportsman’s Inn, eventually closing on the deal this June. The pair were so excited to get started, with help from family and friends, they turned nearly everything around within a week and opened up for business. Renovations included refacing the outside, painting, kitchen and bathroom renovations, new fans, four new TVs, resurfacing the bar, and decorating the place with historic Port Austin photos and

Detrick classified Lake Street Local as a bar atmosphere with a reasonably priced restaurant. “I want it to be known as a place where it’s a little bit city, but still has that up north feeling,” he said. A graduate of North Huron High School, Detrick got

his start in the food service industry working for his parents at Grindstone General Store, which they purchased in 1992. Following high school and college, he moved to the Detroit area, met his wife, and garnered plenty of experience in the restaurant business along the way. That experience taught him

that if you make quality food and drinks, and deliver them with quality service, customers will keep coming back for more. With that in mind, Detrick has tried to train a good staff, and at nearly all times, himself, his wife, or his wife’s sister Rachel Sheridan will always be on hand to keep things moving along. While the menu is still evolving, signature dishes include specialty Detroit style deep dish pizzas like roasted garlic chicken, barbecue chicken, grilled shrimp and BLT. Customers have also been enjoying the fried perch and appetizers such as cucumber bites, reuben sliders and hand wrapped Filipino egg rolls called lumpias.

Nearly everything is made from scratch and purchased locally. “Everything that I try to do has been fresh from scratch,” Detrick said. Detrick has plans to keep the business open every day, year round. Current hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. “I want to be a part of the community,” he said. “That’s the big thing.” Added Detrick: “I’m excited to be home. I used to dream about this all the time. I’m just glad to be home and I want to be part of the community.”

Port Hope to try cart derby races at ABC Day BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer PORT HOPE — In the midst of Port Hope’s annual ABC Day comes an event that is new to the village: A cart derby. The derby will take place on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. and will last to around noon or 1 p.m. Cart inspection will start at 8:30 a.m. that day however. Darwin Krueger, commander of the AMVETS Post 115, said this post is the one putting on the event. He said that the derby is heavily based on the annual Harbor Beach cart derby. He saw the cart derby at Harbor Beach one year, and realized he wanted to put one

on himself. “I’ve seen Harbor Beach’s (cart derby) and I liked it,” he said. “I figured I would give (the riders) a chance top run two cars in the same local area.” The rules and layout are basically the same as the Harbor Beach on. Competitors will be divided into four different categories: the senior division, the powderpuff division, the junior division and the young racers division. It costs $10 to register a cart for the tournaments but is free to attend as a spectator. Blum said he’s hoping for around 20 people to participate in the races. He also said the ARMVETS will be holding raffles at 2 p.m. for cash prizes and flags.

Learn about farming and food during AG Venture Day There will also be a food tent and farm equipment on display BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer HARBOR BEACH — Residents of Harbor Beach will be celebrating agriculture and learning about food during the fourth AG Venture Day. Starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, AG Venture will take place in downtown Harbor Beach. Kelly Jo Osentoski, community promotions director, said the event gives the community an opportunity to learn about farming and agriculture, and where food comes from. “We try to get (the public) involved with the local farmers and talk to them,” she said. While there won’t be any farm tours like previous years, Osentoski said there will be still be plenty of opportunities to learn about agriculture. Farmers will be there to show off their farming equipment. There will

also be exhibits on certain products, like how wheat is milled. And if someone wants to test their athleticism, they participate in a farm themed obstacle course called the

Farm Fit Challenge. Along with the farming activities, there will be live music, a 5k run cookie decorating and a fishing exhibit. There will a cook-off at 10

a.m. and a Flavors of the Thumb Food Tent that opens at 11 a.m. The food in this is made with locally grown and raised ingredients.

The event is free to attend, apart from the food tent and 5k run. She expects around 500 people to show up, depending on the weather.

Port Hope to host ABC Day fun One-day event set for Saturday, Aug. 17 BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer PORT HOPE – People will have a chance to learn about the history of Port Hope at the village’s annual ABC Day. On Saturday, Aug. 17, the event will start at 10 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m. John Blum, president of the Port Hope Chamber of Commerce, said the event will mainly take place downtown, and will mainly feature events based on Port Hope’s history. He said he wants to recapture an old time feel, mainly from the 1800’s and celebrate the history of the Thumb. Many of the history-based activities include the opening of the old jailhouse, fire department activities, tour the Port Hope depot, and a vintage baseball game. There will also be activities for kids related to the local fire department. But Blum thinks the 12-foot model of Main Street will grab people the most at the festival. He said the model replicates the period of time they are trying to capture and will tell the stories of what would have been doing during Port Hope at the time. Blum said the festival is free to attend, and he expects about 300-400 people to show up. He said that the festival helps bring awareness of Port Hope’s history, which he said the town knows very well. “We’re proud of our history and we’re proud that we know it,” he said. “We want to share it because there is so much history in the Thumb of Michigan.”

Port Hope is set to host its annual ABC Day on Saturday, Aug. 17. Here are scenes from last year’s fun. (Tribune File Photos)

Autumnfest will take over Elkton starting Aug. 29 There will be live music, a tractor pull, a car show, and a parade. BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer

44 S. Bay Port Rd. Bay Port • 989-453-3919

Hours: Monday - Saturday 9am to 5pm; Closed Sundays Visit us at www.leeslandscapinginc.com INC.

ELKTON – The popular Elkton Autumnfest, featuring a huge car and tractor pull, will return to the village on Aug. 29. The festival will take place throughout four days this year, going from Thursday night of Aug. 29, until Sunday, Sept. 1. The event will mainly take place in Ackerman Memorial Park and Downtown Elkton. Kurt Damrow, president of Elkton community club, said Elkton has had a festival on Labor weekend for decades, but has been know as the Autumnfest for about 20 years. He said the festival is very important to the residents of Elkton and acts as a family reunion of sorts. “You drive around town, and you see garage sales, tents and campers, and people staying overnight,” he said. “(The festival) is a big family reunion in the area.” The Autumnfest will have plenty of adult and kid friendly events and activities to participate in. Some of these include: • Bingo on Thursday night. • A flea market. • Free inflatables for children. • Friday night will be the festival queen crowning and the beautiful baby contest. • The beer tent, which will open Friday night and will feature live music and some comedians. • A mud volleyball tournament on Saturday. • The festival’s parade will happen Saturday. • On Saturday night, the bands Peacemaker, War Machine and Rockstar will be playing under beer tent on Saturday. But, perhaps two of the biggest events of the festival will happen on Sunday: the car show and the tractor pull. Damrow said this Elkton Autumnfest car show is the largest one in the Thumb area, with him estimating around 250-300 car entering if the weather is good. The tractor pull on Sunday is the largest Thumb Tractor Pulling Association pull in the state. Damrow said he’s expecting a huge turnout for the pull. Tickets for the beer tent and entertainment will be $10 on Saturday and to spectate the tractor pull (kids 7 years old and younger get into the pull for free). Overall, Damrow said he expects around 3,000 people to attend throughout the weekend.
