Pigeon to hold four-day Farmer’s Summerfest Free event will feature a variety of activities BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer PIGEON — Summer is in full swing, and Pigeon will be celebrating that fact with their Farmer’s Summerfest. Starting on Thursday, and going through Sunday, the event will bring mostly free summer festivities to Pigeon. Chairwoman of the festival, Sheila McBride, said the event was formally known as the Summerfest WingFling, but it was changed to “Farmer’s Summerfest” this year. Summerfest is put on to bring family and friends back into town that may have moved away, and to provide free entertainment for local
residents. She said various activities will be happening during the four-day festival, including a parade, fireworks, car show and tours of the Bay Port Fish Company and the Shipwreck Distillery. There will also be live entertainment in the form of bands and comedians. Along with those, McBride said there will be some new attractions at this year’s festival. These include a dog show, bingo on Saturday, a game of Wheel of Fortune presented by the Pigeon Lions Club, and an antique tractor show. The event is mostly free to attend, but McBride did say there are fees to participate in bingo, cornhole and golf events. Overall, she expects a couple thousand people to attend the festival throughout its four days.

Carts to glide through Harbor Beach Saturday Event begins at 9 a.m. and will have four different divisions for people to race in BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer HARBOR BEACH — Carts will be zipping down a hill in Harbor Beach during the ninth annual American Legion Cart Derby Races. At 9 a.m. Saturday, along Trescott Street, carts will start competing in bracket-style tournaments. Ron Kociba, chairman of the cart derby, said cart racing involves gravity-powered cars, usually made from wood or fiberglass. The cars usually have cable-type steering. The derby in Harbor Beach has been going on since 2011. He said cart racers are divided into the following four divisions:

the senior division, but Kociba said they can opt into this one if they so choose. 3. Junior Division: For children ages 12 to 17 years
Classic cars highlight of the Unionville Summerfest Will also feature other vehicles and pin-up girls Saturday BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer UNIONVILLE — Around 100 classic cars will be seen at the 2019 Unionville Summerfest. Starting at 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. on Saturday, the Unionville Village Park will be full of classic cars, live entertainment and pin-up girls. Jean Carpenter, an organizer for the event, said the event mainly centers around the car and bike show. The car show is organized by Carpenter and her husband’s Stromberg Car Club.
Carpenter send she tries to bring cars to the show by bringing flyers to other car shows and shows them to other people. She said people from around state and even out of Michigan have come to the show. The show is not a contest, as it is just for fun, she said. Cars and bikes are not the only things people can register to show off. Some of the most unique entries Carpenter has seen include dune buggies, junior dragsters and military jeeps. Other activities people
will be able to partake in include live music (including a performance by Question Mark and the Mysterians), breakfast and lunch, a raffle and a pin-up girl contest. The event is free to attend, though there is a $20 cost to register a vehicle in the car show. Proceeds will go to the park and event sponsors, Carpenter said. People can get more information by calling Carpenter at 989-870-8600, or by looking up the event’s Facebook page.

ty, which means there will be several rules and precautions that will be taken. These include no sharp protrusions from the vehicles; limiting the amount the wheels can turn; a sand pit after the finish line to slow carts down; and limits on the height of vehicles. There will also be an ambulance on standby during the whole event. The brackets are drawn up a week before the event and are completely random. People who lose a race in their division’s first tournament will be put into another one, which means everyone gets to be in at least two races. Kociba said the event is free to attend, but there is a $10 fee to race. He anticipates around 45 entries and a couple hundred spectators. There will also be a raffle and tennis ball games happening near the event in Harbor Beach.

Popular festival returns to Harbor Beach on July 26 There will be events like a live auction and a polka mass BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer HARBOR BEACH — Various games and activities will be offered in Harbor Beach during this year’s Holy Name of Mary Parish Festival. Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church (OLLH) is holding its annual festival from Friday, July 26, to Sunday, July 28 and will take place in OLLH’s playground. The church’s advertising chairperson Deanna Wruble said the festival has been going on for over 25 years. The festival will provide many activities for festival-goers, including a Texas Hold’em tournament, bocce ball, cornhole, raffles, a classic car show and dinners.
However, Wruble said the most popular attractions at the festival are the live auction and polka mass. She said the polka mass will take place outdoors on that Sunday and will feature a variety of polka players during a live mass. She said this tends to be popular because people don’t tend to hear live polka music during mass, making for a unique experience. There are no tickets to buy to enter the festival, but there are some fees for the dinners and Texas Hold’em. Funds raised from the festival will go back into the church’s school. Overall, she expects around 400 to 500 people to show up to the festival. She said the festival is the largest fundraiser for OLLH. However, she said the event is designed for the entire community to come out and enjoy.

While watching kids sell their livestock is the main attraction at the fair, Brock said the nearly week-long event will be full of things to do. Some of these include: • The Indian Trails rodeo on Sunday, July 28 and the Super Kicker Rodeo on Thursday, Aug. 1. • Drag Racing on Monday, July 29. • Demolition derby on Wednesday, July 31.

erville will have a chance to bring back old residents and celebrate summer during this year’s Deckerville Homecoming. From Friday, Aug. 2, to Sunday, Aug. 4, various activities and live entertainment acts will be there to entertain the residents of Deckerville. Kerry Retentin, president of the Homecoming Committee, said this festival is a chance for former residents to come back to the village. “The purpose (of the festival) is mainly for activities for people that live in our community and for people that have previously lived in the community,” she said. “It gives them an opportunity to come home and celebrate summer.” The three-day event will be full of fun and family-friendly activities. Some of these include: • Fireworks and fire dancers at the community school grounds on Friday, Aug. 2. • A tractor pull on Friday. • A parade at noon on Saturday, Aug. 3. • A car show on Saturday. • Live music from the band Los Gringos on Saturday. • A co-ed softball tournament on Sunday, Aug. 4. • A barbecue chicken dinner on Sunday. The event is free to attend, apart from the tractor pull. Retentin said the committee will probably break even monetarily with the festival. But any funds made will go back into the festival. Overall, she said that around 1,000 people may show up to the event throughout the weekend.
FAIR Continued from Page 4 said the amount of livestock and youth participating has certainly grown over the years. Tickets for the fair cost $5 for those ages 10 years or older and people younger than that enter for free. However, there are additional fees for the grandstand and rides. Money raised from the fair go back into the fairgrounds. Overall, Brock expects around 12,000 people to show up to the fair throughout the week, including both attendees and exhibitors.

Bay Port to hold annual Fish Sandwich Festival Aug. 2-4 BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer BAY PORT – It’s time to get hungry, because the Bay Port Fish Sandwich Festival returns this August. The classic giant fish sandwiches will be back on Friday, Aug. 2 and will go through Sunday, Aug. 4. President of the Bay Port Chamber of Commerce, Nancy Gunden, said the festival take place at McLeish Memorial Park. She said the festival is a family-oriented event that’s centered around fish sandwiches made from locally caught fish. Gunden said the festival offers four different kinds of fish sandwiches, including yellow perch, walleye and cod squares. But, the main staple of

the festival is the classic mullet sandwich, also called suckers. The mullets are caught by the Bay Port Fish Company in Lake Huron. The festival stems from one of the old owners of the fish company, Henry Engelhard. Engelhard sold fish sandwiches in Bay Port to pay for his daughter’s college tuition. By 1978, this morphed into a festival. And 42 years later, the festival is still going strong. Along with the fish sand-
wiches, the festival has plenty of activities to offer, including petting zoos, a parade on Saturday, Aug. 3, crownings of the king and queen of the festival, inflatables for kids, crafts display, mechanical rides and a live auction on Friday. The event is free to participate in, apart from the crafts and sandwiches. Gunden said the money raised will go to community projects and entertainment. Overall, she expects around 5,000 to 10,000 people to show up.

Cheeseburger in Caseville begins Aug. 9 Hundreds of thousands of cheeseburgers will be made during the festival BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer CASEVILLE — It’s time for people to stuff their faces with burgers and listen to Jimmy Buffet, as the annual Cheeseburger in Caseville festival returns this August. Starting on Friday, Aug. 9, Caseville will be engulfed with live music, parades and of course, cheeseburgers. The festival lasts 10 days, ending on Monday, Aug. 19. Steve Louwers, president of the Caseville Area Chamber of Commerce, said the festival has been “21 years of tropical fun.” At the festival, Louwers said, there will be over 20 different restaurants serving burgers in Caseville. Judges will decide who has the best cheeseburger on the first day of the festival, and the winner will receive a

With the festival being 10 days long, there will be a lot more to do than stuffing faces with cheeseburgers. Throughout the week, people will be able to:
• Attend a car show • Do some yoga on the beach • Play some volleyball • Jump around in a bouncy castle
• Race some rubber ducks • Attend a military tribute • Race homemade cardboard boats • Attend a kiddie parade — or the gigantic Parade of Tropical Fools Along with all that, Louwers said there will be nine straight days of concerts, from Aug. 9-18. Some of the bands include Jimmy Buffet tribute bands and classic rock bands. Prices for concerts varies. It’s $7 for a day pass, or $15 for all nine days. Louwers said the festival is the largest family festival in Michigan, with him estimating that around 100,000 people will show up to Caseville throughout those 10 days. “(Cheeseburger) is steadily getting bigger and better every year,” he said. Louwers said the festival has been able to go on for so long because of the appeal of the tropical theme. Along with that, he said the festival has a huge economic impact on the town of Caseville.

People can climb lighthouse during festival There will also be food vendors and kid friendly activities at Heritage Festival BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer
UPPER THUMB — People will be able to climb and learn about the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse during the 16th annual Heritage Festival. The festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, and Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Park, located at 7230 Lighthouse Road. This festival will also be combining this year with the Michigan Lighthouse Festival, a traveling festival promoting Michigan lighthouses. The main activity at the festival is climbing the lighthouse tower. The tours will happen from 10 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. Apart from that, other activities include a bake sale, craft displays and vendors, food trucks and music entertainment. Becker said the Heritage Festival will be hosting vendors from the Michigan Lighthouse festival. The president for the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Society, Larry Becker, said the event is meant to raise money for the lighthouse. Tickets to climb the lighthouse tower are $4 for adults and $2 for children under the age of 12. Funding for the festival generally comes from making sales at the gift shop. He said that usually around 1,800 people to show up to the festival each year, but with this year being joined by the Michigan Light Festival, he expects more people to show up. He said that surrounding communities benefit because they promote tourism to check out the area.

Caseville’s Parade of Tropical Fools set for Aug. 14
AL HANSON MOTORS
Tens of thousands expected to attend

BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer
Join us for the 21st Annual
CASEVILLE — In the middle of the huge Cheeseburger in Caseville festival comes a gigantic parade called the Parade of Tropical Fools. At 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14, the parade will march its way through Caseville in front of tens of thousands of people. Steve Louwers, president of the Caseville Area Chamber of Commerce, said the parade typically lasts for around an hour and a half. It starts on Huron Street and will then turn onto to Main Street up to the Caseville County Park. Louwers said the parade will have an overall tropical theme, with around 100 floats being a part of it. He said many of the floats pay homage to cheeseburgers and Jimmy Buffet. One of the craziest floats he’s seen at the Parade of Tropical Fools was over 160

He said there will be cash prizes for the best small, medium and large floats. Louwers also said 15 plaques are handed out to floats for creativity under specific subcatagories. In order to negate early birds, Louwers said people are not allowed to set up chairs to watch the parade
until midnight of that Wednesday (Aug. 14). He said there tends to be a huge party at that time. Louwers anticipates around a whopping 40,000 to 50,000 people to turn up to see the parade. In fact, he said the route had to be elongated in order to accommodate the massive crowds. He said it’s easily the largest day of the Cheeseburger festival.
