BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer UBLY — The Huron Daily Tribune will be hosting its first-ever golf outing to raise money for Huron County Care and Share. The outing will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. Advertising Director Renee Willis said Care and Share is an event that happens every December that is sponsored by many local businesses, including the Tribune. For the past 30 years, the event has helped feed around 375 families a year in the Huron County area. Willis said the outing is meant to be more fun than serious. People will compete in teams of two in a big-hole tournament to give everyone a better chance at doing well. There will be prizes for the winner, but they have yet to be determined. Along with the tournament, Willis said there will be meals that come with the price of participating in the tournament. It cost $60 a person ($120 a team) to participate in the tournament. Proceeds from concessions will go toward Care and Share. To sign up, call Willis at 989-269-6461 ext. 126 or email rgolder@hearstnp. com.

She said the entertainment series was funded by events over the winter like sewing classes and bingo. They took the proceeds from them and put it toward the upcoming entertainment series. For each concert, Kosinski expects around 75-100 people to attend. There will also be free gift raffles at each event. Kosinski said the group tried to pick a mix of genres when picking bands to play in the series. A list of the bands and the dates they’re playing is as follows: • June 14 — Random (classic rock and pop) • June 28 — Josh Ramses Band (a variety band) • July 12 — Tom & Jerry Show (pop, classic rock and country) • July 26 — Shoot the Rooster (classic rock and roll) • August 9 — Riptide (classic rock, country and pop) • August 23 — Ora Labora (rock and alternative)

Concert series kicked off June 20 BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer PIGEON — Five bands and performers will bring a variety of music and comedy to the village of Pigeon this summer. The 29th season of the Pigeon Band Shell Concert Series will have five different shows throughout the months of June, July and August. Each of the shows will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursdays, said Neil Eichler, who is the chairperson of the Pigeon Band Shell. Ticket prices are $6 when paid for in advance, or $8 at the gate. However, Eichler said people can get a season pass to attend all five shows for $25. He also said children 12 and under get in for free. The venue is outdoors, so Eichler recommends attendees bring chairs and blankets. He said the concert will be moved to the Pigeon Event Center (old VFW hall) in case of bad weather. Eichler said the shows are meant to give local and non-local bands a platform to play music and provide local residents with a variety of performers to watch. The performers booked for the concert series have a wide array of sounds and musical styles, Eichler said. Below is a See CONCERT 9

Ribstock returns to Caseville on June 28 Finger-licking good time planned BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer CASEVILLE — It will soon be time again for Caseville to indulge in barbecue ribs and country music, as the annual Ribstock Festival starts June 28. Through June 30, Ribstock will be taking place in the Caseville County Park. Steve Louwers, of the Caseville Area Chamber of Commerce, said this will be the eleventh year the festival has been happening. The festival mainly features country music and huge rib cook-offs. He said there will be two main cook-offs during the festival: an amateur cook off and a restaurant cook-off. Louwers said the amateur cook-off starts at 9 a.m. June 28, and the big cook-off that weekend will happen from noon to 10 p.m. on June 29. It will feature many local restaurants, including Duffy’s Blue Water Inn, BK’s Burger Shack and Giuseppe’s Pizzeria. Thousands of ribs will be made during that cook-off. The amateur cook-off will have around six people enter the competition, and they will compete for a plaque and cash prize. It costs $50 to enter, and judging begins at 5 p.m. For the big cook-off at noon that Saturday, six restaurants will compete for the People’s Choice awards and the judges’ affection for a plaque for those who win in each contest. Along with the cook-offs, Louwers said there will be four country musicians who will be playing the evenings of June 28 and 29. These artists include: • Kaitlyn Barbee (7 p.m. June 28) • Billy Gunther (8:30 p.m. June 28) • Dani Vitany (7 p.m. June 29) • David Shelby (8:30 p.m. June 29) Other activities include yoga on the beach, corn hole tournaments, and the Hog Jog 5K run. Louwers said a weekend pass is $7, and rib prices depends on the entrant who’s making them. Overall, he expects between 2,000 and 3,000 people to show up for the festival.

CASS CITY — A three-day long celebration featuring everything from a car show and parade to finger-licking barbecue food will take place in Cass City during the week of the Fourth of July. The annual Freedom Festival will take place from noon July 4 through the evening of July 6. Festival Chairwoman Judy Keller said a majority of the events take place on the Saturday. She noted the festival is family friendly and is a good way to bring the community together. “It’s nice that we bring everybody home and pull everybody together,” Keller said. There will be a variety events and activities happening during those three days. Some of the biggest events include: • Golf tournament on July 4 • Classic Car Show on July 5 • Live music on July 5 and 6 • Morning runs from Hills and Dales General Hospital on July 6 • Barbecue dinner from the Cass City Lions Club on July 6 • Basketball tournament on July 6 • Grand Parade on July 6 • Grand Fireworks on July 6 The parade itself will be celebrating its 41st year, said Keller. The parade is organized by Andy Gray, who said there tends to be around 65-70 entrants in the parade. These include Walter’s Potato Farm, local churches, Silver Bullet Speedway and the Thumb Octagon Barn.

The Port Hope Fourth of July Festival will take place July 5 through July 7 in the Hope Activities Center, located at 7840 Portland Ave. Elaine Reinke, festival coordinator, said this will be the 33rd annual festival in the event’s history. The event has a $4 gate fee for people over the age of 16, said Reinke. The festival has many different activities to participate in during the those days, including multiple tractor pulls on that Friday and Saturday. Dan Deer, who plans the festival tractor pulls, said there will be two main types of tractor pulls during the festival: modified and antique. The modified tractors will be broken up into different classes, including D8-Hotrods, 10,000 farm tractors, and 8,000 diesel pro stock tractors. Those will be on Friday, and the antique tractors will be on Saturday. Along with the tractor

Gray said that living in Cass City his whole life makes him look forward to the parade every year, and he wants to generate excitement for kids today. “As a kid, you remember your experiences that you had from a parade and you want to make it the best you can for the kids that are growing up in the community now,” he said. Keller said the event is free to attend, apart from a $5 fee to register a car in the car show. The money raised from that will go to the Cass City Gavel Club, which will put the money into the community. The Helen Stevens Memorial Pool will be open to the public Friday through Sunday. Keller said she expects around 7,000 people to attend the festival, which draws people from all over the state.
pulls, there will be a giant flee market happening on all three days of the festival, Reinke said. It costs $20 to rent a space and the market will be located near the former Port Hope school grounds. Some of the other activities include: • A petting zoo on July 5 and 6 • Fireworks on July 6 • A big parade on July 7

Port Austin to dazzle people on July 4 Planning large Fourth of July Parade and fireworks display BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer PORT AUSTIN — Port Austin will celebrate Fourth of July with fireworks and its annual parade. At 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, the parade will launch from the corner of M-53 and M-25 (by the Shell Gas Station), and will traverse up on Lake Street. Patty Finan, a coordinator of the parade, said the parade typically lasts around 30-45 minutes. Former Port Austin Clerk Thomas Rapson said the parade usually sees around 100 entrants on average. Both he and Finan said typical entries include local businesses, the local high school band, tractors and veterans. Later that night, there will be a fireworks display at dusk by the Port Austin Harbor, according to the Port Austin Chamber website. Finan said the parade lineup starts at 11:30 a.m. on July 4. The event is not only free to attend, but free to participate in. Anyone who wants to participate must fill out and turn in a form before or the day of the event. She also said it was organized by the Village of Port Austin, which handles all the registration forms. The form can be found online at www.villageofportaustin.com. Finan said the event is done to bring awareness to Port Austin and it has been a staple there for many years.
PORT HOPE Continued from Page 13 • Breakfast buffets every morning between 7 and 10 a.m. Reinke said veterans eat free. She said there are some new additions to the festival this year, including tours of a dairy farm and wind turbines. Overall, she hopes for around 5,000 people to attend the festival, which is based on attendance from previous years. She said the festival benefits the Thumb area because all the surrounding towns get business from people attending the festival.

Continued from Page 19 According to the Maritime Festival website, the event began back in 2001, when the United States transferred its ownership of the lighthouse to the city of Harbor Beach. Since then, it has grown to be a small music festival. Jon Woods, the person in charge of booking the bands for the festival, said they tried to keep a general focus on rock and roll, but also kept a variety of bands in the lineup. “As long as you’re a high-level artist, I have no problem putting (your band) on a stage,” he said. “If you look throughout the years for who we’ve had, that’s definitely been the case.” The bands that will be playing there, along with the times they will perform, are: • Maritime Super Jam: This will be a live collaboration between multiple artists between 5 through 6:30 p.m. on that Friday. • Jedi Mind Trip: A rock bands that plays many rock songs from the ‘70s and ‘80s that will perform between 7 and 11 p.m. on Friday. • The Blue Pines Band: According to their website, The Blue Pines Band is a 5-person indie group that incorporates sounds of new wave, blues and hard rock into their music. They will perform from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. on that Saturday. • Harper & Midwest Kind: Woods said the main man from this band comes all the way from Australia. They will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. • Dirty Deeds Detroit: According to the band’s website, they are a Detroit based AC/DC tribute band. There will be a break in their set for a fireworks display. They are scheduled to perform from 9 to 10:15 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. Woods also said two of the bands will play on a new barge stage during that Saturday, which is a stage built on a barge floating in the water. This will only happen if the weather allows it. Beyond the music, Osentoski said other activities include a cornhole tournament, a lighted boat parade on the water, and the Maritime king and queen contest. She said the event is free to attend, and she expects around 2,000-4,000 people to come out for the festival.

Ubly Homecoming to bring folks back home Events to include live music, an ice cream social and 5K run BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer UBLY — An upcoming festival In Ubly will be full of things to do and act as a reunion for friends and family to come back to the Thumb. The Ubly Homecoming will start on July 11 and go through July 14. The president of the Homecoming Committee, Steve Irvine, said the event, in its current form, has been going on for 30 years, and it is meant to bring a lot of people back home for a summer reunion of sorts. He said there will be a plethora of activities avail-
able to participate in at the festival. Some of the things people will be able to do during the event will include: • An ice cream social • A town-wide garage sale • Entertainment and beer tents • A tractor pull • Mud volleyball • A talent show • A 5K run that is put on by the local cross-country club Irvine said the event was organized by local non-profits like the Thumb Veterans Organization and the Lions Club of Ubly. Funds raised will go back to the organizations that put them on, he said. He said the only fees for the festival are for participating in the 5K run, mud volleyball, tractor pull and the entertainment tent. He hopes around 2,000 people will attend the event. Sebewaing experiences 989-883-9224 Includes a live and silent auction in Pigeon BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer PIGEON — People will have a chance to bid on expensive products and memorable experiences during the 2019 Bluewater Thumb Youth For Christ Summer Benefit Auction. The annual auction will enter its 41st year. The event is organized by Bluewater Thumb Youth For Christ, and starts at 8:30 a.m. and goes through 1 p.m. July 13. The event will be at the Pigeon Ball Field, according to the event’s Facebook page. Todd Cramer, executive director for Bluewater Thumb YFC, said the auction is to raise money to help YFC meet its budget. “Unfortunately, our expenses for our program exceeds the donations we receive from the individuals, businesses and local churches,” he said. “The auction is a way for us to bridge the gap and help meet our budget.” He said there will be two main auctions: a live auction and a silent auction with 30-minute rounds that will take place outside under a tent. During these auctions, a variety of items will be sold. Some of these include furniture, outdoor goods, quilts, certificates to local businesses and electronics. BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer PIGEON — Summer is in full swing, and Pigeon will be celebrating that fact with their Farmer’s Summerfest. Starting on Thursday, July 18, and going through Sunday, July 21, the event will bring mostly free summer festivities to Pigeon. Chairwoman of the festival, Sheila McBride, said the event was formally known as the Summerfest WingFling, but it was changed to “Farmer’s Summerfest” this year. Summerfest is put on to bring family and friends back into town that may have moved away and provide free entertainment for local residents. During the weekend, she said various activities will be happening during the four-day festival, including a parade, fireworks, car show and tours of the Bay Port Fish Company and the Shipwreck Distillery. There will also be live entertainment in the form of bands and comedians. Along with those, McBride said there will be some new attractions at this year’s festival. These include a dog show, bingo on Saturday, a game of Wheel of Fortune presented by the Pigeon Lions Club, and an antique tractor show. The event is mostly free to attend, but McBride did say there are fees to participate in bingo, cornhole and golf events. Overall, she expects a couple thousand people to attend the festival throughout its four days.

Cramer said there will be experiences to bid on. These include: • A stay at the Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island • A one-week camping pass at Bay Shore Camp & Family Ministries • Dinner while listening to classic rock band, The Flashbacks He said many of the items and experiences that people will be bidding for are received from donations. They also use money from sponsors to buy items for the auction. Beyond spending money on items, the event is free to attend. Cramer said he hopes to raise between $50,000 and $55,000 from the auctions, and he’s hoping for a turnout of more than 200 people.

BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer HARBOR BEACH — Carts will be zipping down a hill in Harbor Beach during the ninth annual American Legion Cart Derby Races. At 9 a.m. on July 20 along Trescott Street, carts will start competing in bracket-style tournaments. Ron Kociba, chairman of the cart derby, said cart racing involves gravity-powered cars, usually made from wood or fiberglass. The cars usually have cabletype steering. The derby in Harbor Beach has been going on since 2011. He said cart racers are divided into the following four divisions: 1. The Senior Division: For people age 18 and older.

Junior Division: For children ages 12 to 17 years old. 4. Young Racers: For children ages 8 to 11 years old. Kociba said this competition will have a focus on safety, which means there will be several rules and precautions that will be taken. These include no sharp protrusions from the vehicles; limiting the amount the wheels can turn; a sand pit after the finish line to slow carts down; and limits on the height of vehicles. There will also be an ambulance on standby during the whole event. The brackets are drawn up a week before the event and are completely random. People who lose a race in their division’s first tournament will be put into another one, which means everyone gets to be in at least two races. Kociba said the event is free to attend, but there is a $10 fee to race. He anticipates around 45 entries and a couple hundred spectators. There will also be a raffle and tennis ball games happening near the event in Harbor Beach.
