PIGEON — Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon plans on putting on its third annual Spark in the Park to educate folks about how to live a healthy lifestyle. The event will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on May 31 at Pigeon Recreation Park. Scheurer spokesperson Kelli Braun said this event focuses on wellness, helping people realize how they can be more active and live a healthier life. Kids can learn various stretches they can do at home, make first aid kits, and make healthy food portions for their meals. They also will be able to play on inflatables. Blood pressure screenings will be avail-

able, along with Wii bowling, a prize wheel, rehab services and information about Michigan’s advance directives. A complimentary dinner buffet will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Braun said organizers expect around 300 people to attend the event, though it does depend on the weather. “It has been growing every year,” Braun said, noting that around 300 people attended Spark in the Park last year. Other organizations that are anticipated to be at Spark in the Park include Senior Living Services, Sandy Shores Wellness Center, the Huron County Department of Health and Human Services, Bay Port State Bank and Huron Behavioral Health. Grand prizes will be given away toward the end of the event, all of which are geared towards health and wellness. For more information, visit scheurer.org or Scheurer Hospital’s Facebook page.

PORT AUSTIN — One of the state’s Top 10 farmers market is kicking off its 15th year. The Port Austin Farmers Markets wbegan the 2019 season on May 18. With more than 150 featured vendors, the market, located in downtown Port Austin, will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday until Oct. 12. Tom Fisher, executive director of the Greater Port Austin Chamber of Commerce, said visitors will find a variety of items at the market. Those items include, but are limited to: Fresh produce, flowers, seasonings, baked goods, fish, meat, cheese, eggs, fresh herbs, maple syrup, honey, jams, sauces, dips, salsa, oils, art, antiques, crafts, collectibles and wine. “It’s going to be a busy summer with a lot of events going on at the farmers market,” he said. SLIPPERS Continued from Page 9 shop, which is undergoing a radical change. These items will be available at up to 50% off the regular price. They will also have their popular handmade, wood necklaces. “Kids collect them,” Stone-Webber said. “All of them are dated, and we often see kids wearing the necklaces they got at previous Lady’s Slipper Festivals.” New to this year’s festival is an up-cycle craft room. “Our main classroom will be filled with tables of teacups, dishes, pottery, and other home goods,” Stone-Webber said. “We’ll offer some examples, and encourage our visitor’s creativity to build lawn and garden decorations, bird feeders, and bird baths ... that type of thing. We’ll have some things already made for people to kind of bounce ideas off. Hopefully, they’ll be able to come up with something of their own. I can’t wait to see the artwork I imagine will be coming out of that room.” Board members will be assisted by Elkton Cub Scout Pack #3545 in the up-cycle craft room. Their input will help visitors create art work they can take home with them. Volunteers have been busy over the winter, redoing the gift shop area. The downsized gift shop will be open during the festival, with a mostly new inventory. Part of the gift shop has been revamped. It is now The Kid’s Corner, where kids can play and create. In the future, the board plans to take out part of the wall and install a wildlife-viewing window, complete with chairs so visitors can be comfortable while watching the nature center birds and other wildlife. Changes are also underway in the display area of the nature center building, which visitors will be able to see for the first time. They are sure to be impressed with the variety of informational exhibits upgraded over the winter. This year’s Lady’s Slipper Festival is dedicated to the service of a past volunteer: Marie Leipprandt, a member of the Board of Directors of the Huron County Nature Center since it was founded in 1991. She passed away recently following 28 years of service to the nature center. A brief ceremony is planned. The Huron County Nature Center would like to remind people that events such as the Lady’s Slipper Festival, and the upgrades to the building, are only possible through donations from the public. For more information about the Lady’s Slipper Festival and the Huron County Nature Center, call 989-5518400 or visit www.huronnaturecenter.org.

of entertainment into the day for all to enjoy. As in past years, the main downtown streets will be blocked off for the event, which kicks things off at 10 a.m. for vehicle registration and line-up. Porch Fest returns to Port Austin area BY BILL DILLER For the Tribune

TRUCKIN Continued from Page 11 Show entries are now open to semis, pickups, vintage, restored, new, and custom. Last year, around 60 trucks participated, and organizers are looking to at least hit that number again this year. While pre-registration is encouraged, there is no cost to register for the event. According to event organizer Robby Iseler, the event reaches far outside of the Thumb area. “We pull trucks from all over the state,” said Iseler. The show begins at 11 a.m., with trucks lined up on both sides of Huron Avenue (M-25) and State Street (M-142). The setup is perfect as it allows attendees to be able to stroll down the center of the streets as they take in the array of trucks. Families look forward to the chance to see each truck up close and personal. They will have the opportunity to ask questions, take pictures, and some owners even allow attendees to get into the vehicles for a look at the interiors. During the event, businesses throughout town will be open, with some establishments setting up tables and chairs on the sidewalks, allowing attendees the opportunity to eat outside while watching the event. Museum tours will also be available throughout the day. While the trucks are the main attraction, there will be much more to do for all ages. The Taylor Tucky Band is back by popular demand and will perform from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. They will be followed by Alan Turner and the Steel Horse Band from 5 to 9 p.m. Children will be able to play on inflatables, enjoy face painting by Sparkles, and participate in a Kiddie Tractor Pull. At dusk, the Lighted Truck Parade will take place. This parade started just two years ago and has turned into one of the more anticipated events of the day.

“It’s actually been a really good event for us,” Iseler said. “We have a very good turnout for it.” For more information on the Harbor Beach Truck Show, visit www.harborbeach.com or the Harbor Beach Truck Show Facebook page. To register a truck, call Iseler at 989-550-2490 or Tom Donnellon at 989-5502254.

PORT AUSTIN — Listening to music affects people. Some are energized, others become relaxed. There seems to be a type of music for everyone. That will certainly be the case for anyone attending the fourth annual Port Austin Porch Fest, which will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. June 22. The idea sprang from a gathering of musicians about a decade ago. A variety of musical acts performed on porches at neighborhood homes in Ithaca, New York. Visitors chose which act to see, sometimes moving from venue to venue. Local musician Dennis Hafeli saw the potential of such an event, and was instrumental in organizing the Port Austin Porch Fest. “I believe we were the first ones to have a Port Fest in Michigan,” said Hafeli, head of the Port Austin Porch Fest Committee. “I believe Ithaca had the first one in 2010. Over the years, until we started in ‘16, there were maybe 30 or 40 across the country, and Canada. Now, I think there are a lot of them. It’s a great community thing. This will be the fourth year in Port Austin. Every year, it’s gotten bigger and better.” There will be at least 37 acts this year. “This is the most we’ve ever had,” Hafeli said. “A lot of them are repeats. For several, this will be their fourth straight year. Some are in their third year, and

This is a scene from last year’s Porch Fest in Port Austin. (Tribune File Photo) some two. We have more than 10 that will be brand new to us this year.” The music offered at the Porch Fest runs the gamut of musical entertainment. “We have a lot of soloists,” Hafeli said. “Many of them write their own music. We have duos and trios, and then we have specialty groups, like the Bill Denbrock Big Band, which plays music of the 40’s and 50’s, and the Ban Joe’s, which is strictly banjo music. This year, we have an interesting group called SUGAR. It’s an acronym that stands for Saginaw Ukulele Gurus and Rookies. They can have anywhere from seven to 20 people with See PORCH FEST page 19

HURON DAILY TRIBUNE

Continued from Page 13 them.” Committee members arrange for area homes to host musicians during the Porch Fest. Visitors are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs, set up on the lawns of those homes, and listen to the music. Hafeli has more than 20 porches lined up, and is considering adding more. “There are a couple of concerns,” he said. “We have to find porches with covers over them. That became clear the second year, when we had some rain. Secondly, I want to keep it fairly localized. I don’t want it to be so spread out that people won’t be able to get from one place to another. The biggest difficulty is to make sure no act overpowers anyone else. There will be 37 acts, but there will be no more than 16 performing each hour. Most of the groups play one or two hours. I don’t expect anyone to see every act. It’s impossible.” The Porch Fest Committee has designed a program listing the location of each performer, and the time they’ll be playing. “It will be online and in hard copy,” Hafeli said. “It will also tell what type of music each group plays. We recommend people get a hold of that program ahead of time, and plan who they want to see. I believe the website currently has all the acts pictured, with descriptions.” The event features local artists, as well groups from other parts of Michigan. “A lot of the acts come from the Detroit area,” Hafeli said. “In fact, Ferndale has had a porch fest the last couple of years. At least two of the entertainers have played at the Ferndale Porch Fest in the morning, and then hustled up here to play at the Port Austin Porch Fest.” The event also attracts outof-state performers. “Last year, we had the Tim Vitullo Band from Pittsburg,” Hafeli said. “He called and said he’d like to come. I told him we didn’t pay anything. It turned out I got him a job playing at PAK’s Backyard. It paid for their trip, and they were one of the first acts to say they wanted to come back this year.” In addition, there will be acts that hail from Ohio and New York City, as well as an act from Houston, Texas. As a way of helping the musicians out, because the porch fest isn’t a paying gig, the committee has contacted area bars and restaurants in the hope of having them host an entertainer following the event. “The owner and the musician work out the details,” Hafeli said. “It has allowed some musicians to get a paying job out of it. We’ve had good response this year, and hope to include some Bad

Axe establishments, as well.” The information about this year’s acts are on the website. Hard copy programs will be available the day of the event. “We will have a schedule printed,” Hafeli said. “It

will have the addresses, and who’s playing when, including who’s playing at an after party, and the location.” There will be music for all tastes at the 2019 Port Austin Porch Fest. Be sure to visit

the website ahead of time for a schedule. It should be entertaining, and loads of fun. For more information on the Port Austin Porch Fest, call 989-738-8652.

Visitors can sink their teeth into this festival Caseville Country Ribstock planned for June 28-30 BY BILL DILLER For the Tribune CASEVILLE — Warm summer days and cool, pleasant evenings, add in music and good food and you have the makings for a good time. If this sounds attractive, then Caseville is the place to be June 28-30 for the 11th annual Caseville Country Ribstock. ‘We have an incredible summer planned’ Huron County Nature Center’s schedule packed with activities BY BILL DILLER For the Tribune UPPER THUMB — Throughout the year, the Huron County Nature Center is a busy place. Not only are the trails open from dawn until dusk, 365 days a year, the board of directors has been actively improving and updating the nature center building. Members also are making plans to expand the usefulness of the nature center. Visitors will be impressed when they see the modifications, both implemented and those coming soon. “We have an incredible summer planned, and I could not be more excited with some of the changes,” said Caitlin Stone-Webber, Huron County Nature Center Board member and naturalist. “We have kept a few of our more popular Saturday morning programs, and added a couple of workshops.” The nature center continues to grow; the building is now connected to the power grid. It is heated and air conditioned, enabling it to be used year round. The updates to the interior are noticeable as soon as people walk in the door. “I think what we are most thrilled about is for our patrons to see the changes we’ve made to our museum area throughout the winter,” Stone-Webber said. “I really think they’ll be blown away by our new exhibits, and by the updates we’ve made to our old

ones.” The gift shop has also changed significantly. Reduced in size, the board is planning to
