Welcome to the 2019 Heartland Int’l Film Festival Welcome to the 28th Heartland International Film Festival. At the Berlin International Film Festival, we were listed with the top film festivals when the announcement of the 50/50 by 2020 film pledge was made for 50% of our film lineup to be directed by women by 2020. Heartland Film was already ahead of this; seeing our name listed among the best film festivals in the world was a proud moment.

Welcome to the 28th Heartland International Film Festival! It is my pleasure to be part of this organization and we couldn’t be prouder of our Festival and Indianapolis, the city that is our home. Here are some interesting facts about our Festival: Heartland has the largest ongoing prize purse of any film festival in the country. Independent filmmakers rely upon these funds to keep on making films.

We continue our relationship and endorsement from FIPRESCI (Federation Internationale de la Presse Cinematographique) which is the International Federation of Film Critics association of professional film critics and film journalists from around the world. To carry their endorsement and have three members from FIPRESCI join us as jury members is an honor. Thank you, General Secretary, Klaus Eder, for making this happen.

Every year, our visiting filmmakers laud our Hoosier Hospitality and how welcome they feel at our Festival. We rely on more than 700 volunteers to produce this festival every year, and they do tremendous work. We can always use

Heartland Film Programs Indy Shorts International Film Festival Indy Shorts Heartland Film’s all-shorts expansion and is an Academy Award® -qualifying film festival in the short film categories, Best Narrative Short Film and Best Documentary Short Film exclusively showcasing short films under 40 minutes. Indy Shorts takes place in July in Indianapolis. Truly Moving Picture Award Heartland Film honors select theatrically-released films with the Truly Moving Picture Award. The Award allows studios and distributors to inform potential audiences of a film’s transformative power.

About Heartland Film - Indy Shorts Recap Indy Shorts International Film Festival Heartland Film’s second annual Indy Shorts International Film Festival, an Academy Award®-qualifying event, featured more than 150 short films 40 minutes or less from around the world at Newfields, July 25-28, 2019. Indy Shorts was attended by filmmakers from all over the world and included after-parties, red carpets, an awards ceremony, an outdoor screening, workshops and panels, and Indy Shorts Pride Stride in partnership with the Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival. Indy Shorts Pride Stride was a Rainbow Carpet event and short film program held at the Athenaeum Theatre. The Indy Shorts award winners will be shown during the Festival. The Fest Pass is the best way to fully enjoy the Heartland International Film Festival. Fest Pass holders receive priority access online to claim tickets. Tickets are guaranteed for Fest Pass holders UNTIL Oct. 12 and then it is first come, first served. If a film is sold out, a fest pass holder is not guaranteed a ticket and should check with the box office. General/Member

After each screening you will use the provided ballot to rate the film on a scale of one to five. Ballots will be tabulated to decide the Audience Choice Award winner for Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Indiana Spotlight, and Special Presentation categories.

Heartland Film focuses on bringing film to local schools During the 28th Heartland Film International Film Festival, Heartland Film would like to offer students the opportunity to experience the transformative power of film. With nearly 200 films programmed, there are many educational films to choose from. In 2018, Heartland Film in partnership with WFYI screened “Eva: A-7063,” a documentary about 84-year-old Holocaust survivor Eva Kor and her journey to forgiveness, to more than 800 students in Indiana. With many films there are opportunties for Q&A sessions after the screenings with the filmmakers and/or film subjects. Heartland Film can accommodate small groups at one of our screenings or hold private screenings for larger groups. Student tickets starting at $5 per person. Other discounts available depending on group size and need. If your group is unable to attend a screening at our Festival, we are happy to bring the films to you! Below is a list of films that have previously screened at one of our Festivals. If interested in setting up a screening for your group, please contact Heartland Film Staff at info@heartlandfilm.org. Eva: A-7063 - 60 minutes Directed by Ted Green As a 10-year-old “Mengele Twin,” Eva Kor survived the experiments of the Nazis’ “Angel of Death.” At 50, she launched the biggest manhunt in history. Now 84, she urgently circles the globe to promote the controversial lesson her jaw-dropping journey has taught: healing through forgiveness. Attucks: The School That Opened a City - 106 minutes Directed by Ted Green When all-black Crispus Attucks High School was built in the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan ran Indiana and its capital. The governor, the majority of the state legislature, the mayor and the entire School Board were Klansmen or Klan-backed. The school was designed to fail. But it did not fail. For more than 40 years, the students who came of age within the brick walls of Attucks overcame a system designed to belittle them. When Kids Wrote the Headlines - 29 minutes Directed by Michael Husain Known as Children’s Express, and then Y-Press, young Hoosiers told the world about kids’ struggles and kids’ heroes, including world leaders. They documented the issues of their time. This film reveals how young people tackled this challenge and how the experience transformed their lives.

Night School - 84 minutes Directed by Andrew Cohn For adult learners Greg, Melissa, and Shynika, finally earning their high school diplomas could be a life-changing achievement. Emmy award-winning director Andrew Cohn’s absorbing documentary observes their individual pursuits, fraught with the challenges of daily life and the broader systemic roadblocks faced by many low income Americans. Circles - 82 minutes Directed by Cassidy Friedman Eric Butler, a Hurricane Katrina survivor and pioneer of the restorative justice movement, relocates and finds work at an Oakland, California high school enforcing his no-nonsense approach to counseling vulnerable Black and Latino teenagers. Shot over two years, the film follows Butler’s impassioned efforts to nurture troubled youth and keep them in school, fighting racial discrimination by replacing snap suspensions and expulsions with gritty, intimate, and honest mentoring. When his own teenage son is arrested and beaten in jail, he begins to question his methods and ability—not just as a teacher, but also as a father.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Since the 1960s, Michael Apted has helmed an extensive list of feature films and documentaries. His feature films include “Gorillas in the Mist,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “Gorky Park,” “Thunderheart,” “Nell,” “The World is Not Enough,” “Enigma,” “Enough,” “Amazing Grace” (2006 Heartland Int’l Film Festival Opening Night), the third installment of C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” and “Unlocked.”

One of the most accomplished and beloved American actresses of stage, film and television, Cloris Leachman is a true Hollywood icon. The Academy Award®winning actress has also won eight Primetime Emmy® Awards as well as a Daytime Emmy® Award. Leachman has been front and center on iconic shows from “Lassie,” and “The Twilight Zone” to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” for which she won two of her Emmys® in the role of Phyllis Lindstrom. From “Facts of Life” and “Malcolm in the Middle” (another two Emmys®) to Raising Hope and American Gods, audiences couldn’t get enough of Cloris.

Mr. Apted’s documentary credits include the Boris Grebenshikov film “The Long Way Home,” “Incident at Oglala,” “Bring on the Night,” “Moving the Mountain,” “Me and Isaac Newton,” the soccer film “Power of the Game,” and the official 2006 World Cup Film. But among Mr. Apted’s most widely recognized documentary directorial achievements are his internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning sequels based on the original “7 UP” documentary. The films have followed the lives of 14 Britons since the age of seven in seven year increments.

Peter Bogdonavich cast Cloris as Ruth Popper in “The Last Picture Show,” earning her an Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress and a BAFTA Award. Mel Brooks soon came calling, casting Cloris as the unforgettable Frau Blucher in his classic film “Young Frankenstein. They reteamed on “High Anxiety” and “History of the World: Part 1.” From “The Muppet Movie” to “Spanglish,” Cloris has continued to delight audiences in over 70 films and hundreds of hours of television.

Mr. Apted was born in England in 1941 and studied law and history at Cambridge University. He has received numerous awards and nominations for his work, including a Grammy, British Academy Awards, a DGA Award and the IDA Career Achievement Award. Michael Apted in attendance to accept the award.

Leachman was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2011 and has her own star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was granted an honorary doctorate in 2014 by her alma mater Northwestern University. Cloris will accept her award via video message.

Born in Indianapolis and raised in Europe and Canada, Brendan Fraser started acting at a young age and began attending theater when his family lived in London. He attended high school at Toronto’s Upper Canada College and received a BFA in acting from the Actor’s Conservatory, Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Seamlessly transitioning from smart independent films to action-packed blockbusters, Fraser continues to garner widespread critical acclaim for his versatile inspired performances as well as his keen eye for selecting thought-provoking material. Fraser is best known for his role in Universal’s “Mummy” franchise as Rick O’Connell. Stephen Sommers’ 1999 smash hit action/horror adventure, “The Mummy,” was an ambitious retooling of the 1932 horror classic, with Fraser cast as an American serving in the French Foreign Legion who becomes involved with an English archaeological expedition and the ancient secrets they unleash. In 2001, Fraser reteamed with Sommers and co-star Rachel Weisz on the film’s sequel, “The Mummy Returns.” In 2008, Universal released “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” “The Mummy” franchise has grossed $1.415 billion worldwide to date. Fraser has been in a string of some of the most successful independent films of the past decade including Lionsgate’s Academy Award®-winning Best Picture “Crash,” directed by Paul Haggis; Phillip Noyce’s “The Quiet American,” based on Graham Greene’s 1955 thriller of the same name; and Bill Condon’s “Gods and Monsters,” opposite Sir Ian McKellen and Lynn Redgrave. Brendan was most recently seen in the highly acclaimed “Doom Patrol” revival as Robotman, the FX anthology series “Trust,” Showtime’s award-winning TV series “The Affair,” and the feature film “Gimme Shelter,” opposite Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens (2013 Heartland International Film Festival Opening Night). The crime narrative follows the relationship between a mafia family and an undercover officer as Fraser’s character spins them all into a dangerous web. Patty’s Picks Patty Spitler, WISH-TV entertainment reporter and long-time Heartland International Film Festival supporter, shares her top picks and Heartland Film memories. It’s no secret that I love films. As a shy only child, growing up I found my best times were watching TV and being swept away. Old Tarzan movies captivated me, as did “The Lone Ranger” and “Zorro” (notice there are critters in all my early on-screen favorites!) In my early teens, I started to go to the movies, generally alone, and I was hooked. I remember seeing “Patton” and “Bonnie and Clyde” and being transfixed. Then I saw a movie that awakened me and educated me, “Harold and Maude,”

about a young man in love with a very old woman. “How amazing,” I thought! Of course, the underlying Cat Stevens music had me enchanted as well. The love affair with films has continued to this day. As a TV movie critic and entertainment reporter for many decades, I’ve enjoyed some amazing opportunities. Although my TV critiques have lessened, my love of fine films is still strong. It’s my belief that a magnificent movie can open minds and change the world.

So many memories and friends highlight my decades of love and admiration for the Heartland Int’l Film Festival. I remember when it started in 1992, and I was a strong supporter of this fledgling operation. What was the goal? What could they achieve? How would it happen? There were so many questions back then, but as Patty interviewing Rob Reiner at HIFF 2017. with all successful endeavors, you just push forward. And that is exactly what HIFF did. Never give up. Always fight for the future. And now, in 2019, with President Craig Prater at the helm, the Festival and its mission have not only evolved but also exceeded all expectations. Not just for Indiana. Not just for Patty with actor Bishop Stevens at HIFF 2018 red carpet. America. But for the World.

The International federation of film critics The International Federation of Film Critics, FIPRESCI (Federation Internationale de la Presse Cinematographique), is an association of national organizations of professional film critics and film journalists from around the world for “the promotion and development of film culture and for the safeguarding of professional interest.” It was founded in 1930 in Brussels, Belgium and currently has more than 50 participating countries. At the 2018 Heartland International Film Festival, FIPRESCI selected the Best Directorial Debut for a USA Narrative Film. We welcome FIPRESCI back this year to once again select a winner for this award. Carrying a FIPRESCI award recognition assists filmmakers in securing distributors. Thank you FIPRESCI for assisting Heartland Film with our mission of inspiring filmmakers and audiences. We are honored by your endorsement, and welcome these visiting members: Klaus Eder, General Secretary Klaus Eder is a major film critic from Germany. He serves on international juries in many festivals around the world. As an officer of the acclaimed FIPRESCI film critics association, Mr. Eder will be joined by three international film critics from FIPRESCI to announce the second annual FIPRESCI award at the Heartland International Film Festival.

Beat Glur, Switzerland Beat Glur is a film and music critic from Bern, Switzerland. He was the editorin-chief of the cultural news department of the Swiss News Agency for 16 years. Having worked as a programmer for numerous film festivals such as Rotterdam, Berlin, and Locarno, he has also been a member of the Cultural Commission of the Swiss Authors Organisation Suissimage and the Federal Film Commission – the advising board of the Swiss Government.

Müge Turan, Turkey Müge Turan studied sociology and film. She started her professional activity as public relations and journalist in the fields of music and film. Since 2008, she’s been the film department manager of the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art and she also currently does film criticism. She is also a radio programmer and DJ at Radyo Eksen, Açik Radyo since 2001.

Dennis West, USA Dennis West has taught in universities and cultural institutions in the United States, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. His publications include the monograph “Contemporary Brazilian Cinema,” as well as articles in “Jump Cut,” “Film Criticism,” and other journals and reference works. He has served as juror at many film festivals, such as Karlovy Vary, London, Valladolid, and Buenos Aires. He currently serves as Contributing Editor at the U.S. quarterly Cineaste.

Festival Award Juries

Selection Process Submitted films are initially viewed by two screening committees–one each for Narrative Features and Documentary Features. These committees are comprised of 78 volunteer screeners, each of whom has taken a critical examination and been hand-selected by Heartland Film staff. Screeners watch each submitted film in its entirety and complete a detailed online review. These reviews help Heartland Film’s programming staff determine the strongest submissions each year. The five films in each category that best match Heartland Film’s mission are sent on to one of four jury committees. 2019 Heartland Int’l Film Festival Award Categories Set to award $60,000 in cash prizes, the 2019 Heartland International Film Festival will announce all of its winners at Awards Brunch Saturday, October 19 at The Montage. The Jimmy Stewart Legacy Award ($5,000 total award)

Indiana Spotlight Award ($2,000 total award)

The Jimmy Stewart Legacy Award will honor a single winner, selected from the Festival’s feature-length narrative and documentary titles. The winning film will best embody the ongoing legacy of actor and national hero Jimmy Stewart and will demonstrate the triumph of the human spirit through determination and the defiance of odds, humble vulnerability, and courage in the face of adversity. Made possible by a partnership with The Stewart Family. Richard D. Propes Social Impact Awards ($2,000 awards) One Narrative Feature and one Documentary Feature that showcase stories centered on the fight for equality, justice, or feature stories/subjects that have made an impact on society will be eligible for Richard D. Propes Social Impact Award consideration. Best International Feature Film Oscar® Contender ($2,000 award) HIFF is proud to present 20 of the films recently identified as their respective country’s official entry to the 92nd Academy Awards® in the category of Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film), a category reserved for a feature-length motion picture produced outside the U.S. with a predominantly non-English dialogue track. As official country entries, these titles are officially on the Academy® longlist and will be considered as the shortlist and eventual nominations are announced in December and January. Audience Choice Awards (Winners announced post-festival) There will be four Audience Choice Awards (one each for the Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Special Presentation, and Indiana Spotlight categories) announced after the Festival concludes.

Films with Hoosier ties, shot in Indiana or directed/ produced by Hoosiers are eligible for the Indiana Spotlight award. See the 2019 lineup on page 141. Best Premiere Awards ($2,000 awards) One Narrative Feature and one Documentary Feature holding its U.S. or World Premiere will be eligible for Best Premiere Award consideration. Humor & Humanity Award ($1,000 total award) One film will be awarded for best tastefully combining comedy and pathos to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. Indiana Film Journalists Association Award for Best Special Presentation (Winner announced post-festival) The Indiana Film Journalists Association (IFJA) is an organization of Indiana-based journalists and broadcasters who specialize in film criticism and commentary. IFJA was established to promote the art of film criticism in the Hoosier state, to support Indiana’s growing film industry, and to promote quality film criticism in Indiana. New for 2019, IFJA has partnered with the Heartland International Film Festival to award the best film within the Festival’s Special Presentation selections, consisting of Special Presentation films, and Opening, Centerpiece, and Closing event titles. FIPRESCI Best Directorial Debut for a USA Narrative Film The International Federation of Film Critics, FIPRESCI, is an association of national organizations of professional film critics and film journalists from around the world. FIPRESCI has partnered with Heartland Film to award one USA Narrative Film with Best Directorial Debut.

2019 Heartland Int’l Film Festival Award Categories The Heartland International Film Festival features a $15,000 Grand Prize for both Narrative Feature and Documentary Feature categories and $1,000 for each Narrative Feature and Documentary Feature Finalist not chosen for the Grand Prize. Easterseals Disability Film Challenge NARRATIVE & DOCUMENTARY SHORTS / SPECIAL PRESENTATION 72 MINUTES / USA Earlier this year, the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge celebrated its sixth year of giving filmmakers – with and without disabilities – the opportunity to collaborate and tell unique stories that showcase disability in its many forms. The film challenge is a weekend-long filmmaking contest – open to all – that provides a platform for new voices in the entertainment industry. Each year, aspiring storytellers are prompted to creatively write, produce, and complete a short film in only 55 hours. We hope you enjoy these 13 finalists from the 2019 Easterseals Disability Film Challenge! Second Date - When his date goes wrong, a boy uses his wheelchair to go back in time and fix it.

Human Helper - In the near future, artificially intelligent robots, otherwise known as human helpers, are a regular part of life. However, they’re not very inclusive. In the fall of 2016, TIME magazine followed two Syrian refugees, Taimaa, 25, and Nour, 23, as they prepared to give birth and raise children far from the homes they fled in Syria, capturing an intimate journey into the female experience of the refugee crisis. Directed by women The #DirectedbyWomen movement originated in Indiana when film lover Barbara Ann O’Leary invited film lovers everywhere to join together in September 2015 for a Worldwide Film Viewing Party celebrating women directors and their films. The invitation sparked the imagination of filmmakers, film lovers, cinema programmers and other cinephiles. Do-It-Yourself events — large and small — surfaced in various countries around the globe and the #DirectedbyWomen hashtag served to weave together the growing community. The Worldwide Film Viewing Party has become an annual tradition, and September has become identified as Woman Director Awareness Month. The #DirectedbyWomen initiative is active throughout the year: inspiring film lovers to discover, explore, celebrate and share the work of women directors from all periods of cinema history, all parts of the world, and all stages of their careers. O’Leary has built a #DirectedbyWomen database of women directors, which currently lists more than 10,000 directors and is continually being expanded. 5050X2020 Pledge commitment In January 2019, Heartland Film officially signed on to the 5050×2020 Pledge to solidify its commitment to gender parity in its programming. The Pledge was first introduced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 and strives for better gender representation and transparency by the year 2020. At HIFF 2019, 5 of the 10 (50%) competition Finalists and 43% of the films in the overall lineup are directed by women. At Indy Shorts 2019, 8 of the 15 (53%) competition Finalists and 47% of the films in the overall lineup were directed by women. All three Indy Shorts top Grand Prize winners (Animated Short and the Academy Award®-qualifying Narrative and Documentary Short categories) were directed by women. In its 2018 programming, 4 out of 5 top Grand Prize winners--accounting for more than $70,000 in cash prizes and an Academy Award®-qualifying shorts category--were directed by women and more than 50 percent of jury members and screening committee members were female. Beyond the 5050×2020 pledge, Heartland Film has formed an official partnership with the Alliance of Women Directors (AWD) based in Los Angeles. Heartland Film is the first organization to commit to the Dorothy Arzner Partnership, AWD’s top partner level which guarantees a programmed block of AWD films and complimentary submission waivers for all AWD members. Indy Shorts featured a block of AWD member-directed short films this July. As a founding member of the Film Festival Alliance, a nonprofit networking organization that develops and fosters collaboration among mission-driven film festivals across North America, Heartland Film shares a growing commitment to gender parity: “Film Festival Alliance represents more than 160 mission-driven festivals, who as a collective, are dedicated to equal representation within our organizations and the film festival industry as a whole,” said Executive Director Lela MeadowConner. “Throughout 2019 and beyond, we will be introducing additional resources for our membership, that advocate for greater accessibility to inclusive programming for both festivals and filmmakers; as well as addressing intersectionality initiatives as they obtain to organizational leadership. In 2017, the Heartland International Film Festival premiered a new series– specifically a program of films nominated for the Best International Feature Film Academy Award®. Nine films out of approximately 97 submissions to the Academy® of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are initially selected, with a final total of five films being put forward to the active Academy voting members. The winner is announced during the annual gala event, the Academy Awards®.

Alghouta in Damascus was the grounds of several such attacks with chemical weapons, with the staff there establishing a subterranean refuge, named “The Cave.” Dr. Amani is managing director of the hospital and works with her colleagues, Dr. Alaa and nurse Samaher, as well as 18 other women from a staff of 80 people. They face death daily as they try to save the people of their town and to isolate and fortify the hospital against further attack.

Nestled in an isolated mountain region deep within the Balkans, Hatidze Muratova lives with her ailing mother in a village without roads, electricity, or running water. She’s the last in a long line of Macedonian wild beekeepers, eking out a living farming honey in small batches to be sold in the closest city – a mere four-hour walk away. Hatidze’s peaceful existence is thrown into upheaval by the arrival of an itinerant family, with their roaring engines, seven rambunctious children, and herd of cattle. Hatidze optimistically meets the promise of change with an open heart, offering up her affections, her brandy, and her tried-and-true beekeeping advice.

During the early 20th century, one tiny recording studio in Richmond, Indiana, had a big impact on the soundtrack of the Jazz Age. “The Music Makers of Gennett Records” tells the unlikely story of the Gennett Recording Studios, where many of the greatest artists in American jazz, blues, country, and gospel music first recorded.
