BEEF WEEK BACK IN TIME elcome by The President.

Hello all, On behalf of the Casino Beef Week Promotions Committee Inc, I would like to welcome you to The Casino Food Co-op Casino Beef Week 2022, celebrating 40 years of Casino Beef Week in Casino, Northern NSW. What a year we have planned! Not only do we have the old favourites back, but we have some brand-new activities happening this year. Firstly, I want to thank our Principal Partners, The Casino Food Co-op who has been proudly supporting us for many years now, Richmond Valley Council, who has embraced Casino Beef Week as the region’s Cornerstone Event, Casino Lifestyle Village who has come on board this year to help grow our Beef Week Saturday and Casino RSM Club & our many other sponsors both Large and Small. The biggest change this year, is the movement of our Led Steer Show and Auction to Wednesday the 25th of May. Despite the recent floods, we have still had a great response from our local producers. Make sure you come down to the Ring in front of the Tatts Hotel on Wednesday Afternoon. Discover Richmond Valley is also hosting two new events on Monday 23rd of May, that being their Meet the Artisans and Teddy Bear Picnic both up in the newly refurbished Drill Hall Prescient. And obviously, the most exciting news The Northern Rivers Times Street Parade is back again on Saturday the 28th of May as part of the Casino Over 50’s Lifestyle Village Beef Week Saturday. With the street parade, kids’ entertainment, markets, Stud Cattle, Summerland Family Fun Zone, AirTimeFMX, Whip cracking, Woodchop and much more on Saturday, Casino CBD will be the place to be and don’t forget to visit Casino Golf Club on Sunday for the annual Show N Shine Car Competition. With all the ups and downs of the past few years, it is so exciting to bring you Beef Week once again to Connect, Taste, Learn and Celebrate! We will see you at Beef Week.

2 loads of bull - In 1982, two Braford bulls became VIP patrons of the Commercial Hotel, wandering through and doing their best to keep the carpet clean. Luckily there wasn’t any china on display. Apparently one made a hole in the floor, and it was just covered up – rumour has it, it’s still there! In the beginning, the first ever stud parade had over a million dollars of cattle promenading up and down the street. The popularity and success of the event drew even larger crowds the following year when 11 breeds valued at a few million dollars were in attendance. Did You Know, one of the Beef Week Presidents was a vegetarian! 1n 1994, the street parade took 90 minutes to pass!

1985 Merv Mason leading the Herefords in the parade In 1997, they held the Beef Week Bash a non stop dancing event… One of the Beef Queens was a Meat Analyst - Fiona Mills in 2001. Trustums Stamp of approval - The Trustums cattle brand became the first applied to the brand board at the Commercial Hotel after their steer became the champion in the Fat Cattle Show. The branding irons were heated in the hotel’s fireplace.

1987 Stage Coach: Paul Petrie’s Cobb and Co Coach drove around the streets led by Johnny Brooker.

1982 Starting out as an industry event, the first Ever Beef Week was a 3 day event held in March. 11 butcher shops contribute to the first Breakfast with the Butchers. It was a very successful event from the beginning, with the consensus being: The butchers can shout breakfast anytime! About $400 worth of cooked beef (2 carcases and 150 loaves of bread) went to over 800 people. 1983 Due to popularity, the Beef Week celebrations were filled out to a full week. A hoe down was planned at the saleyards, and organisers planned for about 300 or 400 guests. About 4000 showed up and there was a scramble to cater for a crowd that size. Hay bales were provided for seats, people dressed in their country best, entertainment played, and the memories that were made that night have lasted the test of time.

e r e b m e Rem 1998 Since Beef Week started in 1982, Jack Gillett was a familiar face. For eighteen years, he rode his pennyfarthing in the parade. Jack along with his father Bill restored the pennyfarthing from an ‘awful’ state, making the once decrepit bike into a beautiful cycling machine. The 1998 parade was the last time the then 69 year old participated in the parade 1999 1999’s festival was a success before the event even rolled out. Accommodation in Casino was fully booked out and the Beef Week Committee had been receiving enquiries from as far away as Sydney and Victoria. The festival’s Opening Gala was attended by over 300 people and even a week’s worth of rain could not stop the crowds.

1994 40 competitors under the age of 12 took part in the Mini and Junior Stockmen and Womens Competition. All the effort that went into their outfits – Akubra’s, stock whips, oilskins and boots set to shine make this a very popular event. The competition was fierce, and a tug of war broke out over a stock whip. One entrant in the mini section, joined the junior section for a second go at a prize and one sat on his hat. Emma Randall, 3, and Bill Roache, 2, took out the mini competition. Sophie McDowell, 8, and Chris McGregor, 7, took out the juniors. 1995 Local producers, the Trustum family of Bentley Downs Charolais Stud won the Led Steer Competition with it’s 17 month old 658kg steer. He had been on a feed lot for 130 days, gaining 2.2kg a day. 1996 On the Beef Week program was a beer fest and highland dancing! 1997 RSM Spice girls made an appearance in the parade; Jack Gillet’s Penny Farthing rode through the streets and Paul Petrie’s Cobb and Co Coach drove around the streets led by Johnny Brooker.
