FRIDAY

BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA

ABC TV PLUS, 8.30pm

The Aussie spin-o of this long-running British franchise – once a stalwart of pay TV – was last seen almost a decade ago, receives a vibrant makeover for its new home on Network 10. In this highly anticipated return, The Block favourites, fun-loving couple Mitch Edwards (below left) and Mark McKie (below right), have pocketed the keys to the presenting duties; their bubbly banter (backed by some serious real estate nous) infuses the house-hunting with welcome wit and pizazz. This fresh batch of episodes sticks to the tried-andtrue formula of helping people nd their dream home. Tonight’s premiere kicks o in booming Brisbane with new parents Brooke and Peter.

ABC, 8pm Presenter

Heather Ewart has possibly seen more of Australia and its myriad tiny towns than anyone. She’s back for season nine of this warm and fuzzy series that celebrates the people living in rural Australia and the beating heart of their tight-knit communities. Ewart (above) kicks o her adventures on the dusty and long Strzelecki Track, which is now in the process of being sealed. Beginning near Lyndhurst, South Australia, and heading into the Strzelecki Desert, at Lyndhurst Station she meets Adam and Kate Litch eld and their two children. While Adam grew up on the track, it’s a big change for Sydneysider Kate, who helps run their 35,000 square km property.

Francis Ford Coppola’s blood-soaked epic is a visuallyarresting piece of darkness that re-tells Stoker’s 1897 novel about a 15th-century Romanian warrior in Victorian London, who lives on through the ages avenging the death of his beloved wife. As Dracula, Gary Oldman is magni cent. The ensemble cast –Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder, Richard E. Grant and Sadie Frost (above), all lavishly costumed and looking the part against the sumptuous set design – give rich performances in a lm which sometimes favours style and pyrotechnics over content. The only real let-down is doe-eyed lead Keanu Reeves as preyed-upon lawyer Jonathan Harker. 3006
