SPONSORING EVENT FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY THE CANCELLATION OF THE CASINO TRUCK SHOW FOR 2021 WAS UNAVOIDABLE, ACCORDING TO ORGANISER DARREN GOODWIN. “WE CANCELLED THE SHOW BECAUSE OF THE UNSTABLE SITUATION ACROSS AUSTRALIA WITH COVID 19 AT THE MOMENT,” HE SAID.

!

“Being an organiser, it is a major stress and I want everything to be perfect...

r Goodwin says “I love the bling, the beautiful paint jobs of the trucks that are entered and I love the pride that drivers and trucking companies have and the lengths they go to for the show.”

Mr Goodwin said trucking was a lifestyle, not a job and he saw it as second in being essential to the frontline COVID 19 workers. “Apart from our frontline medical staff, road transport is the essential service that keeps everyone fed and we saw it last year when we were all in lockdown and truck drivers put themselves at risk to get the job done,” he said. For 2022 Mr Goodwin has high hopes for the Casino Truck Show to go ahead. “The anticipation for this year was very high and the disappointment was huge when it had to be cancelled. “With the support of people like Sharon Davidson and the events and tourism team from Richmond Valley Council, it would have been epic.

.“I think the people in our industry take such pride in their trucks that (to sponsor the event) was a fantastic opportunity to support and help them present what they do, to the wider public,” he said. As the main sponsor North Coast Petroleum provides funds for the trophies, assists with some of the organisation and helps to bring some activities to the day, from the compa

LONG ESTABLISHED FAMILY EXPANDS THEIR FREIGHT BUSINESS Darryl McMullen comes from a long established family in the Northern Rivers area. As the eldest boy of six, he was schooled in Casino. “It was compulsory to go to school, but not compulsory to learn,” laughed Darryl. With that he left school at 16 and went to the south coast where he built up a transport business. “I’ve been 54 years in the transport business now, coming back to the North Coast in 1979,” said Darryl. With the recent purchase of Hensley Carriers a month ago, he also runs McMullen’s Freight and West of the Range Transport. “We are a general carrying business, but Hensley Carriers will be responsible for the delivery of beer to hotels and clubs in the area,” said Darryl. “West of the Range Transport covers Stanthorpe, Inverell and Tamworth, while McMullens Freight travels from Brisbane to Sydney. “We have had long associations with Hurfords, Richmond Waste and a timber merchant in Brisbane for over 30 years.”

All Bulk Tran is a company that has been run by Zane and Machaela Rose since 2018. “One of our trucks was entered in the Casino Truck Show in previous years,” said Machaela. “We’ve got four prime movers and tippers that cart in fertiliser, manure and grain. “We move a lot of commodities.”

travelled to Northern Territory and Western Australia. “We’ve made some really good friends through the business.” For Zane, the truck show is a social day, a chance to catch up with others in the same industry and talk about work. “The postponement of the truck show has thrown our plans out, but when it is on again, we will support it where we can,” said Machaela.

The business has been very busy this past year, with a good harvest. Machaela said it is exactly what the trucking industry needed.

then we slowly migrated over to promotions as we had the embroidery machine.“I enjoy doing logos and designing the caps, business cards and flyers.”

“We do absolutely everything,” laughed Jamie. “All promotional items like bar mats, stubbie coolers, cups, shopping bags, whatever you need. “Our biggest seller are the full custom caps. We will do the colours and 3D embroidery, incorporate the logo you have or help you design a logo.” For a business that has been running for only 16 months, they have a high demand for their caps. “There are enough heads in Australia to wear our caps,” said Jamie.“We had an industrial sewing business for 12 years

While upset at the cancellation of the Casino Truck Show this year, Jamie said they look forward to making an appearance at next year’s event. “Our main focus on the day is to follow up on our customers,” she said. “We display our caps and everyone likes to come and see physically what we do, but we focus on the client not us.“We promote them, not ourselves.”

ravel Buddy Ovens was established when John Warren made small ovens for his mates.

“We also have a big demand from the boating industry where many ovens are being fitted to new boats.”

John had a background in 240v electric heaters and rangehoods so used his skills to create a portable, lightweight oven that could run on 12 or 24 volts, ideal for cooking, baking and warming food while travelling.

Mr Warren said the transport industry has also been buying up the Travel Buddy Ovens.

Since October 2020, John has hung up his apron to enjoy retirement and sold his business to his son Darren.

“I have had some truckies mention they were buying the oven to lose weight.”

“With covid starting in 2020 and people being in lockdown, we became very busy with demand for the ovens creating a backlog of back orders,” said Darren. “We have increased production to almost double now, just to meet demand”. “Our focus is on the Australian market as everyone is staying within our borders for the foreseeable future … camping and 4 wheel driving.

“Due to the fact many takeaways and food places being closed during lockdowns,” he said.

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF BROWN &HURLEY hat started out as a small partnership between two army buddies fixing bikes, has become one of Australia’s largest truck dealerships 75 years later.

Jim Hurley is the son of Jack, who with his friend Alan Brown, partnered up to create the business Brown & Hurley in Kyogle. “Dad was from Kyogle and Alan’s wife was from Grafton so there was the attraction to get back to the North Coast after the war,” said Jim. “When they joined up (in World War Two) as mechanics, they were in a protected industry. They taught the troops basic mechanical knowledge such as what to do if your fuel filter is blocked and how to clear it.” Jim remembers he and his sister were living with their mother at The Risk when Jack came home. “Dad and Alan bought a bike shop with a shed out the back where they could do repairs,” he said. “Then when they sold a Crawler tractor and then a White truck, they realised they were getting more money from their sales commission. “From there dad took over the sales and Alan worked on the parts and service.” By 1953 the business had moved into its own premises in Kyogle which used to be the Express Examiner building, according to Jim. They become a Leyland Trucks dealer in 1957 and then in 1964 they were made the first Kenworth dealer in Australia. “We recently sold our 17,000th Kenworth truck,” said Jim.“It’s been 50 years since Kenworth started manufacturing trucks in Australia and we got the 70,000th truck. I will be taking it out to show at vintage truck shows and I’m pretty happy about it.” To celebrate their 75th year in business Brown & Hurley have been holding open days at each of their nine truck dealerships and three agricultural dealerships. “We started with the Kyogle branch as that is where it all started,” said Jim. “My best estimate is there were 1500-2000 people

there on the day. (Page MP) Kevin Hogan launched my book and all proceeds of the book sold on the day went to the (Westpac Rescue) helicopter service, about $4,000.” Jim’s book is the second part of the history of Brown & Hurley, the last 15 years. “Dad wrote about the first 60 years so I took on the next 15,” he said. “The author I hired didn’t like the way the first book was written so we started from scratch and a 160 page book went to 224. The first 60 years are a lot of photos and memorabilia and the next 15 is more about the company expansion.” As part of the 75 year celebrations Brown & Hurley held their charity golf day which saw $40,000 raised for the daughter of one of their long term employees who has leukaemia. “Our suppliers gave donations, the Lions Club was there, the soccer club sold raffle tickets and the Kyogle Hospital Auxiliary too,” said Jim. The result was a testimony to the community fabric Brown & Hurley has woven within the Kyogle area and beyond. This same care extends to their customers and Jim is pleased to call many of them friends. “We are driven by our customers and where some have started out with one or two trucks, they now have major fleets,” he said.

“And we have helped them support their families and build their homes.” The future of Brown & Hurley continues to look bright with the family involvement still strong. “My son Paul is the CEO these days and my son Tony is the Dealer Principal in Brisbane,” Jim said. “Rob Brown’s daughter is in HR and my grandson Jack has finished his apprenticeship as a diesel fitter.” Whatever the future, Jim is confident Brown & Hurley will be around for another 75 years.

%!23#$#!4!5#'#./66

“Their expansion has dragged us along with them. Many of them are third generation customers, in fact 75 percent of our business are repeat customers.” As time moves on Jim has been collecting many of the examples of their products and has built himself quite a museum at the Kyogle dealership of Brown & Hurley. “I got this idea that as the years go by, some of the stuff we sold would disappear,” he said. “I’ve collected a Crawler tractor, a White truck”. “Then we have restored a replica of the first Leyland we ever sold.” Jim credits a lot of the success of Brown & Hurley to the great staff they have had over the years. “We have some employees who have been there 30 years and 25 years, they are very loyal,” he said.

his was a year of celebration for Luke and Lana Taylor as they reached their 15 year anniversary with their freight business LJ & LE Taylor.

“We were established in 2006 with my wife Lana running the office,” said Luke. “We started with one truck and purchased additional vehicles with a takeover of another business 10 years ago back in 2011. “We operate a general bulk freight services from the Coffs Coast to Brisbane and Sydney.” For the Taylors the Casino Truck Show is a social day, where they enter their trucks into the parade and for show and it is also a great day to network.

LJ & LE Taylor Luke, 0438 066041 freight@taylorholdings.com.au

“I catch up with friends and colleagues and it is a chance to relax and look at some awesome vehicles,” said Luke. “Our son Bailey, who is truck made, gets a chance to be part of the fun too.” With a great customer base, reliable workers and a good fleet of vehicles, Luke and Lana are enjoying working in the freight industry.

The Superchrome wheels, with a 7 YEAR CHROME WARRANTY, are distributed all over Australia. They are sold direct to customers, as well as through Truck Dealerships and Trailer Manufacturers. Next year’s Casino Truck Show will have many trucks with Superchrome wheels on display.

In 2021 Superchrome Pty Ltd celebrates 20 years of chroming Alloy wheels for trucks and trailers. Superchrome has upgraded production facilities in 2021 for a third time and this, combined with operating two production shifts, will ensure the increasing demand for Superchrome wheels is met. The reason for this increasing demand is the growing awareness of the advantages the Superchrome wheels provide for rigs. These advantages are a combination of presentation, image, long-term labour and cost savings. The Superchrome wheels are easy to clean and do not need polishing to give that new shiny finish. Also, the hard Superchrome surface increases the life of the wheels by reducing wear.
