Happy New Year! And like you, I'm sure you've been ready for those numbers to turn and to start a New Year. Although we probably won't feel the change right away, it feels good to have 2020 behind us. Although we know it wasn't all bad, we have all grown closer in some ways and learned the power community. Here at Heartland, we are grateful for the continued support we've seen from our readers and advertisers. THANK YOU! We are featuring a fairytale styled shoot at the Harpors Vineyard shot by Missie Lafrenz Photography to kick off the issue. Like all things Missie shoots, it's gold. Just wait until you see the sunsets and snow. OH, and there is another 'Charlotte' sighting, and whenever you add a miniature burro to an event, it's sure to be bliss! Our first feature wedding in our "It's My Big Day" section is Allison + Jacob. Wait until you see their floral. It's fantastic! And is it just us or does this wedding feel like it took place in the Parisian countryside?! The beauty of the family's farmhouse radiates, and we were drooling over each and every photo. The second wedding is our cover couple Sydney + Garrison's artsy yet moody wedding at the Teachout Building in the East Village. The bride's creativity is evident in all of the touches, and they even hired a portrait artist at their reception. SO COOL.

A simple example was the friends who picked-up and drove the food from an hour out-of-town, wrapped in blankets and in coolers to keep everything at its best. "Such thoughtful touches. To these amazing people, we are eternally grateful." The reception table was set with pressed ferns, antique honey jars from Jacob's grandparents full of more beautiful flowers, and we can't forget the bottles of Chateau Boswell from Allison's Napa Valley vineyard, where she is a winemaker. The evening ended with candlelight twinkling, children playing around the farm, and the couple swaying to soft music in the moonlight. It was everything Allison and Jacob imagined it would be, surrounded by the people and the land that they love.

“The short story,” Sydney told us, “is that we met at High Life Lounge through friends.” The longer version is after two attempts at dating each other (with years in between), the two reconnected at a time in their lives when they needed each other the most. They committed right then and there to love and support each other. And on a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, Garrison made it truly official when he asked Syd to marry him. The excitement and planning started immediately as the couple left the mountains. Sydney was drawn to the moody beauty of rich, dark colors and liked the idea of a winter wedding. As she looked at the calendar, she saw her grandparent’s anniversary, Dec. 21st, fell on a Saturday in 2019. So that couldn’t be more perfect! Their date became 12/21/19 as they drove home from getting engaged. Sydney was always immersed with art in her life and wanted to bring that into their day. Her grandmother, who’s wedding date they were about to share, was an artist. She created papier-mâché birds, so there were feathers included in the bouquets and bridesmaids’ earrings. And Sydney, being an art teacher herself, brought creativity into the day with subtle painted strokes in their invites, their painted unity ceremony, and having an artist at the reception to sketch portraits for the couple and guests. In the end, it was most important to Garrison and Sydney that they create an experience for their friends and family to feel the love as much as they did. And family helped tremendously. So many had a hand in making their day special. Sydney told us, “Take a moment during the ceremony to breathe, pause, and look out at all the people who came to support you. Talk about feeling the love!”
