Hello Lovely Brides!
HAPPY NEW YEAR! We just got done with the biggest season for engagements and I am sure most of you can’t wait to start wedding planning! As always HWI has put together another issue to help guide you through the wonderful world of wedding planning. We have some pretty awesome features this issue that center around one of the most important things you will ever wear … your wedding dress! With the New Year comes new resolutions, new changes and for many new beginnings. This year all of those apply to my life. Over the last year, I have had the fabulous team Tandem Hart, Alesha and Lisa, designing for HWI. They have made this magazine absolutely beautiful and I couldn’t be more proud of the product that they have helped me create. I have made the decision, one that I am very happy about, yet one that was very hard for me, to let them take over as the new editors of Heartland Wedding Ideas. Working with Alesha and Lisa over the last year has truly been a pleasure and many of the ideas, inspiration, and obsessions that have been brought to you have been created by them. We have worked as a fantastic team feeding off each other’s strengths. I have no doubt that they will continue to bring you new and wonderful things, just like HWI has been doing over the last two years. I will continue to be a resource to Alesha and Lisa and help them in any way they want me to contribute. We are all very excited about this transition and I know that I am leaving the content of this magazine in wonderful and very capable hands. Now for the issue … It is BEAUTIFUL! We worked with Dame + Maiden and Dornink to bring you two amazing features. Dame + Maiden, with the help of some fantastic local vendors, helped us create the first ever HWI Look Book! Sarah, owner/designer of Dame + Maiden, has created six looks that range from bohemian to edgy to vintage. Your jaw will definitely drop when you see them, mine did. We're also featuring a story on how Dornink created one bride’s dream wedding gown from her mother’s original wedding dress. We get to see at how the transformation took place and a glimpse into the Dornink workshop. As always be sure to check out our fantastic vendors, latest HWI obsessions and of course It’s My Big Day! We always want to hear from local brides, so please visit our website and see how your wedding can be featured in Heartland Wedding Ideas! Happy New Year and Happy Planning! XOXO, Jenna

When Alyssa saw her mother's dress, she knew instantly that she wanted to wear it at her wedding. Thanks to Faythe Dornink, she was able to take that dress worn September 27, 1980 and update it for her own wedding, November 7, 2015.

“To trust someone to deconstruct and restyle the fragile lace dress was not easy for us, but when we met Faythe at Dornink, we knew we were in good hands.” Alyssa told us. Faythe and her daughter Sarah own Dornink, a wedding and special occasion couture shop in Des Moines, Iowa. Faythe started the business in 1981, out of her home and the two have grown it into the shop you see now in the East Village. For a customized dress or extensive alteration, it starts with a consultation to figure out what the bride envisions for herself — what does she love, what does she want to change, what would make it the dress of her dreams while still keeping the sentimental value of her mother's gown. Then Faythe or Sarah work with the dress itself, to pin, cut and deconstruct it carefully and through a number of fittings create the final piece. For Alyssa, it was altering the long sleeves, skirt and neckline while still keeping the lace touches.

Faythe and Sarah pride themselves on creating one-of-a-kind pieces for their customers. “Watching a bride fall in love with her dress, whether a bride chooses one of our designs, has a custom gown made, or brings in a dress that needs major adjustments, it's such a thrill seeing the bride’s face Some of the articles Faythe and Sarah saved over the years about their careers in fashion.

Dornink's style is clean, interesting lines that create stunning gowns. Their gowns have a modern edge that still works to fit to each bride’s individual style. Many dresses are first sketched or simply draped on forms to find the most unique angles.

It was important to Alyssa not only to be able to wear her mother's wedding dress, but to document all of it, and we're so glad she did! At the wedding, she shared the photos and “The Story of the Dress. So many brides want to wear their mother's dress and this is a great way to honor her mother while making it her own.

Layering Lines, Angles & Layering Layering
While interviewing Sarah Dornink this issue, we asked her, “What trends are you obsessing over lately?” Her answer, “Interesting lines, angles and LAYERING LAYERING LAYERING.” We couldn't agree more. We're seeing it in fashion, decor and stationary alike. We can't get enough of geometric shapes and Tandem Hart has paired it with another trendy texture, marbling!

KAITLIN + TRENTON
We have many handmade gowns in this issue and Kaitlin's is no different, made mostly from her mother's wedding dress.
These high school sweethearts may live in Iowa City, but their hearts are in the mountains, so they decided to elope to their favorite place, Glacier National Park for a serene October wedding. The idea of keeping the wedding private for just the two of them was something Kaitlin found very romantic. While there was still plenty to coordinate, it let the couple focus on just each other, in a place they love. With their photographer Kelsie Berg and crew, they were able to explore beautiful parts of the park to capture their amazing day. One of their unexpected stops was a waterfall on the side of the road. The couple bounced and slipped their way along rocks to get to the base. And they were so glad they did. The shots turned out to be some of their favorites. 36

's Kaitlin ade handm tails They also wanted to celebrate de with friends and family back in Iowa, so in the spirit of their charming northwestern getaway, they rented a lodge off Lake Darling, near the small town of Brighton, Iowa. It had a cozy fireplace and large picture windows that looked out on to the lake. Kaitlin still wanted all the small details, so she created her invites, table decorations, even burned small pieces of pine with the couples initials that sat at every place setting. The travel wasn't over yet, Kaitlin and Trenton had one more adventure and escaped to Lake Louise, Banff National Park, in Alberta, Canada. We wish them both a lifetime of adventure and love.

BRETT + NIC While looking forward to a day filled with friends and family, Brett and Nic wanted everyone to be comfortable, casual and close to home. So finding a new venue, Barqara in Runnells, Iowa allowed them to celebrate the way they always pictured, in a goerogous rural setting, where they could kick up their cowboy boots and be themselves. Brett and Nic met coming back from a high school trip. Nic was incredibly outgoing and Brett was insanely shy. That didn't stop Nic, it was question after question and by the end of the ride he was showing off his vocal chops. A couple of months later, she went from thinking he was crazy to being crazy about him!

HEART LANDWEDDINGIDEAS.COM
The couple wanted to incorporate as many personal touches as possible. This included superhero socks, heartfelt and humorous vows, planting a unity tree using soil from each of their parents houses and Brett's grandmother's punch bowl that had held countless drinks from weddings past. "Don’t stress about what you think other people will want you to do. Its YOUR day, not theirs! If you want to rock your superhero socks, you do it!" The best part of the planning process for Brett and Nic was choosing their photographer and venue, which are very big decisions. Baqara accentuated Brett's style while Andrew Ferren, their photographer captured it beautifully so they'll have all their favorite moments forever.

EMMA + TYLER It was a warm, colorful fall day at Sticks Warehouse in Des Moines, Iowa. The rain that had been predicted for Emma and Tylers entire wedding day held off and made for the most beautiful day. They loved the industrial vibe at Sticks, matched with a simple color scheme of navy, champagne, and gold. “The day reflected us completely,” Emma told us. “Two people smitten and overwhelmed with the love and joy of friends and family, gathered in one space to celebrate with us!”

Emma was looking to mix things up with her wedding dress. She was inspired by some of the pieces she was seeing, but she couldn't find the whole dress. Instead, she worked with Modern Dress in Boone, IA, to take a similar top to her bridesmaids dresses, by Watters, and a separate skirt by Mori Lee to make her dream flowing dress. It was a great way to mix and match to get the look she was after. A unique piece of advice from Emma, try to designate
