In a sea of white and ivory, this hot new trend is a subtle, yet colorful alternative. It’s flirty, feminine, and looks great on a variety of skin tones. Don’t love pink? Look for options in shades of blue, peach, or gray.

Make Your Garter Whether you are planning on DIYing everything in your
wedding or hiring vendors to do it all, this simple DIY project is a great way to get exactly the look you want for your garter. You can use any style of stretch lace, brooch, or ribbon to make it your own. Also, did we mention we assembled both examples in under 10 minutes? Yes, you too can DIY!
You'll need:
Crystal appliquĂŠ:
Scissors
Brooch Or rhinestone button
Accent Ribbon Rosette
embellishments
Felt square
Stretch lace
(white or ivory)

Photography // Sarah Rooney Photography Garter // Handmade by Heartland Wedding Ideas
Hot glue gun & glue sticks
Measure your leg,
4" – 5" above your knee, snug. Add an additional inch and cut your stretch lace.
Glue the lace ends
together by overlapping each end by 1/2". Make sure to line up the pattern.
Arrange your appliqués
(rosettes, brooches, bows) on the table so you know how you want them glued down.
Measure the length and width
of your embellishment cluster. Using these measurements, cut an approximate oval shape from your felt square to glue to your garter. It will go in this order: stretch lace, felt, embellishments.
Glue THE felt down to the lace.
Glue the appliqués.
You will add and glue your embellishments on top of this area, one at a time, to hide the seams and to create a seamless garter.
AND … TA-DA!!!
That's it! You've created your unique, handmade garter for your special day. Glue guns are amazing.

Nomadic Newlyweds
Swooning and we mean swooning over these two lovebirds. Travel experts and international photographers, Brooke and Wilhelm, travel all over the world to luxurious vacation spots and photograph amazing wanderlusters. They believe being a “Newlywed” is a state of mind, instead of a frame of time. They can usually be found with a glass of champagne in one hand and their camera in the other. We are definitely obsessed, and maybe even a tad bit jealous. You can follow them and their spectacular adventures at nomadicnewlyweds.com.
Billie Balls These are our favorite accents of the season and we can’t get enough! They are a bright pop of color, and add a wonderful dimension of texture and shape to any arrangement or display. Not a fan of yellow? Dye them a red, orange or green hue to fit your color scheme!
Video Booths
24
We love photo booths and yes, we’ve been caught in them one too many times, but the new thing is video booths. And if you haven’t seen one or been to an event with one, you are missing out! You get to record a 4 – 10 second video and share it on social media right from the event, and you even still get a printed photo strip. It’s amazing and can we say … completely genius. Check out the video booths from A Special Event DJ right here in Des Moines.

JESSICA + MARK
Jessica and Mark have an amazing love story that began on eHarmony. Jessica never would have dreamed that her first and last date on the popular dating website would be with the same man who would one day propose to her. The two clicked right away and started dating. When the time came for the proposal, Mark first went to Jessica’s parents and sister for their blessing. Of course they said yes, and he whisked Jessica off to the Omaha Zoo for a little weekend away. No only did she come back with a ring, but she came back with an absolutely perfect fiancé, and of course the surprise of the proposal she wasn’t expecting. 28

Thinking of blush and soft colors for their outdoor May wedding, the couple started the hunt for the right venue and vendors using recommendations from friends and a little research online. They chose to get married at Sticks, giving them the woodsy surrounding they wanted for their outdoor ceremony, as well as the big beautiful windows and rawness of the inside of the building for the reception. To ensure everything was flawless, they enlisted the help of wedding planner, Anthony Marinaro, who kept track of all the details, and wedding decorator, Bella Flora, who “took one look at my Pinterest page

and made my dreams a reality (within reason, of course)!”. Walking down the aisle with her dad and being serenaded by her groom at the reception are a few of Jessica’s highlights from the night. “He got up with the band and sang, “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra. It was amazing. How many other brides can say their husbands serenaded them on their wedding day?! It is a moment I will never forget”. For Mark, spending the day with his groomsmen, many who live out of state, was very special to him. He grew up in Florida and California and appreciated the opportunity to get ready with his best friends. The couple’s biggest piece of advice is, “Include your family and close friends in the wedding planning. It will make the process so much more enjoyable.”

SAMANTHA + KAYNE HWI: How did you two meet? SAMANTHA: We met in high school (Newton, IA) through my brother, Dustin. Kayne was a Senior and I was a Sophomore. Kayne asked me to be his date for his Senior Prom, and the rest is history! HWI: Was the proposal a surprise? Tell us about it! SAMANTHA: We were living in Chicago at the time and planned an extended weekend vacation over Thanksgiving weekend (2014) in Lake Geneva, WI. Kayne booked our stay at an amazing, roaring 20’s style bed and breakfast called the Baker House. He proposed to me on Friday night during dinner, which was served next to a fireplace in a private study at the Baker House. I was very surprised when the proposal happened, and celebrated soon after by sharing drinks and live music, with dedicated songs, in the Baker House’s piano lounge. 30

HWI: What was your inspiration or the theme you were going for your wedding? SAMANTHA: We always planned on a small intimate wedding. It was about creating a night of things we like with all people close to us in our lives. We focused on a mixture of the style and things that we really liked. We didn’t specifically go for a single, defined style. Instead, we found a mixture of fun furniture, decorations and even our custom built bar. HWI: How did you pick your vendors? SAMANTHA: The two vendors we hired were for food (Catered by Charlotte) and photography (Jessica Dean Photography). Everything else was put together by us personally, or friends and family. We hired Jessica Dean Photography not only because she, Kayne and I were friends in High School, but specifically because of her unique style of photography that truly captures the entire look, feel and experience of each and every wedding she shoots. Originally we wanted a food truck for catering, but since the wedding was the same weekend as the Iowa State Fair and Knoxville racing, every food truck we could find was booked. So we created our own version! We turned the shed window into a walk up food window. We chose Catering by Charlotte because she was so easy to work with and when I explained my vision she understood right away and

KELLIE + NATHAN Kellie and Nathan grew up in the same town and went to high school together, but their love story didn’t begin until long after graduation. They had known each other for quite sometime when they were asked to go on a double date with one of Nathan’s friends, and although Kellie and Nathan were not supposed to be the one’s to fall in love that night, fate had other plans. The couple still credits their double date friends, whom were married a year before, for their happy ending. Nathan proposed to Kellie on her birthday, giving her a surprise she will never forget. Every week, the couple and a few of their long time friends get together for a weekly dinner with their families. For special occasions, they go out to one of their favorite restaurants and celebrate. Not only was it Kellie’s special birthday dinner, it would be the night she said yes to Nathan forever. When she got to the restaurant, she walked in and her friends were standing up holding up a sign that said, “Will you marry?” and when she turned around, Nathan was down on one knee, ring in hand, and said, “Me?” Shocked, in the best way possible, Kellie was happy to say yes alongside her close group of friends. For selecting the perfect vendors she attended bridal shows, scoured the internet, and took recommendations from other brides. Her favorite part of the planning process was coming up with the look of the reception and focusing on the attire, flowers, and food for her guests. Her favorite memories from that day were having her first looks with her two favorite guys, Nathan and her dad. Kellie’s biggest advice is to “take a moment on your wedding day, just the two of you, to take everything in and enjoy the moment. The day goes by so fast.”
