a letter from our

(and design team!) Dear couples,

Wedding season has arrived and we couldn't be more excited to see what you're planning! We hope that our May/June issue will be a great resource and inspiration for your big day. Here's a peek at this issue: Bridal models laying in stunning florals! Do we need to say anymore? Justin Salem Meyer's Photography stuns. (pp. 8 – 11) We're obsessed with finding the perfect fit and Kanya Marie is helping brides find theirs. She's a one-woman show who can do it all. If you're looking for alterations or going completely custom, she has the talent to get you what you want. (p. 14) Abbie and David's reception at Sticks Studio provided a beautiful backdrop for their bright, floral wedding. We love this bride's color palette and all the pineapple touches. (pp. 18 – 23) Ceci and Ty's wedding looked like an unforgettable evening full of dancing. West End Salvage paired with Plum Event + Design created an atmosphere that was sure to set the tone. (pp. 24 – 27) Make sure to check out HeartlandWeddingIdeas.com for additional content and more of our preferred vendors. Remember you could be featured in It's My Big Day, all you need to do is submit. Find it on our website under "Contact Us". We can't wait to share your beautiful day! XOXO, Alesha & Lisa

Yes we obsess over the perfect dress, but you also need the perfect fit! Kayna, of Designed by Kanya Marie gives us tips to make sure you're ready to walk down the aisle.

Plan for your the best fit. Once you have your dress, you're halfway there. Most alterations take at least 4 – 6 weeks. If there's a lot of detail, beads or lace, it could take up to 8 weeks. So it's best to know who will be doing the altering and schedule it before it arrives. And when you go, don't forget your shoes! Whatever you plan to wear under your dress, you'll want to wear them to adjust the skirt to the correct length.

One less thing to stress about.

Designed by Kanya marie

Kanya wants her brides to de-stress when they see her. Yes there can be unexpected challenges, but she always tells her brides "There's always a solution." So don't stress and let her help.

Or start with custom. Yes there's a lot out there, but if you can't find what you like, you can always go custom. It sounds expensive, but working with a designer from the start doesn't have to be more extravagant than what's ready to order from a store. Kanya Marie will work with you to understand the silhouette you like and how clothes fit your shape. Moving from sketch, to fabric, to fit, she can create your one-of-a-kind dress.

David and Abbie met in college through friends and a shared chemistry class. It was, in fact, the best kind of chemistry, and 4 years later they were still dating, but living apart while David was stationed at the Jacksonville, NC military base. Abbie came out for a visit and he suggested a drive to a botanical garden. The day was hot and the couple was starting to sweat, but David seemed to be sweating a little more than normal, Abbie remembers. They decided to sit by a beautiful fountain and that’s where he asked her to marry him. She said yes! And they quickly called their families to tell them the good news.

Abbie was inspired by the wedding of Katrina Scott from ToneItUp.com as well as elements she saw on Pinterest. She loved the feel of Katrina’s beachy vibes and wanted to bring in tropical elements into their wedding through flowing dresses, bright colors and tropical accents. We LOVE the pineapples. Katie Lindgren was their photographer and helped Abbie plan out a detailed timeline for the day. “I had no idea how long things would take throughout the day. She was great at always answering any questions I had.” Abbie told us. Katie even sent a handmade Christmas ornament with their photo and date as a special keepsake. That morning, the bridal party got to enjoy a love-themed yoga session to start their day with Abbie’s former church group leader, Katie. “It was perfect and the most centering way to start the day with someone who has been one of my biggest supporters.” Abbie’s favorite moment was walking down the aisle and seeing David cry as he looked at her. David had just returned before the wedding, after being six-months deployed. That made Abbie just that more grateful to be standing there in front of him, in a moment she had been dreaming about for so long.

Surprises are not Ty’s strong suit. You can read him like an open book. So Cecilia was on to him as he planned the proposal. Clue #1: He asked her to plan for a walk around the park where he asked her out over 7 years ago. Clue #2: He reminded her multiple times not to forget about Saturday. Clue #3: When he picked her up he was quiet and nervous, which Ceci tells us is very unlike him. When the couple made it completely around the path and nothing happened, Ceci was genuinely confused, had she read him wrong? Then she turned and saw their families at the top of the hill holding flowers and champagne, yelling “SURPRISE!” She turned back to Ty and he was down on one knee. The moment still caught Ceci off guard and it was an unforgettable moment for the couple. The couple decided to have an evening ceremony, starting 7 p.m. They were hesitant at first, but it allowed the couple to enjoy the day as well as let their guests explore Des Moines and spend quality time together. Ceci found many talented vendors that fit their style. Anna Jones used her artistic touch to shoot their day to have a look of timeless grace. Maya, of Plum Event + Design created florals and table designs that blended with the already stunning atmosphere of West End Salvage for their reception. And the creative

mind behind their invites, Sara McCoy of The Permanent Collection, gave the couple an elegant letterpress invite. “We know it’s tempting to cut costs or use family and friends, but hands down the communication and expertise of using people in the wedding industry is worth it. Choose your vendors wisely and trust they will do wonderfully; being worry-free on your wedding day is priceless!” Ceci told us. The couple’s favorite moment? Their first kiss. “There are no words to describe the bliss of marrying the love of your life in the presence of family & friends.”
