a letter from our

We hope you are getting a lot

of planning done for your fantastic big day that is soon to arrive! In

this issue of Heartland Wedding Ideas we wanted to help you get a jump start on some of those details that

you have to think about while planning one of the biggest days of your life. Reading through these pages you'll find a fantastic section on signature cocktails. Gone are the days of beer and wine. Lots of brides and grooms are choosing to express their personalities through a drink of their choice. TandemHart, Kara Vorwald Photography, and HWI brought you a fabulous way to style, decorate and garnish these delicious drinks. HWI also wanted to bring you ways to do wonderful engagement pictures in colder temperatures, snow can make for beautiful and definitely cozy photos. You will have to snuggle up to your fiancĂŠe just a little but more in the chilly weather, but doesn't that make the photos all the better? As always our HWI Obsessed section is full of fantastic ideas featuring eucalyptus, unexpected wedding food, and the latest jaw dropping trend, bridal henna! We also created a DIY project showing you how you can make floral boutonnieres from grocery stores and organic markets. Be sure to check out the three It's My Big Day Weddings in the back of the magazine. They are beautiful and one of our brides wore red! We would love to showcase your big day in HWI, submit your wedding to be featured in the next issue! XOXO, Jenna

CRANBERRY CIDER GIN PUNCH

"punch love"

Ingredients

Autumn Simple Syrup

1 1/2 cups Apple Cider

1 cup Brown Sugar

3/4 cups Cranberry Juice

1 cup Water

2/3 cup Ginger Beer 1/3 cup Autumn Simple Syrup

1/4 teaspoon Freshly Grated Nutmeg

1 3/4 oz Gin

3 Cinnamon Sticks 2 Star Anise

Bursting Cranberries 1 cup Fresh Cranberries

A few slices of Orange Rind

1/3 cup Water Instructions for Autumn Simple Syrup Combine all ingredients together in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Whisk constantly until the sugar dissolves and let simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely. You can store this in the fridge for a few days - keep the spices and rind in the syrup for flavor, but remove right before using. Instructions for Bursting Cranberries Add the cranberries and water to a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the water is simmering and the cranberries are busting, about 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from the heat. Use the cranberries in the punch and as garnish in the glasses. Instructions for Punch Stir the ingredients together gently (the ginger beer will make it fizz!) and taste. All ginger beers can be different, so you may want to add more simple syrup or cider if yours is super spicy. You can also use ginger ale, but in that case you may want LESS simple syrup than what is called for. Serve the punch over crushed ice (this is important!) 9 and garnish with the bursting cranberries.

Beauty and natural light. There’s something about cold air right before the sun dips below the horizon that makes the landscape seem crisp and clear. The natural light and the beauty of nature, is down right gorgeous.

It might snow! A light flurry on a photo session makes for very romantic moment between you and your significant other. Snowflakes on noses, coats and in hair provide provides a lighthearted, romantic atmosphere for photos.

Layers give your images depth. When it's cold outside we bundle up. Jackets, sweaters, scarves, mittens and hats help tell the story of your style as individuals as well as a couple. So bundle up and get cozy!

Unique photos. These photogenic moments can only happen during the winter months and are likely not something other couples will think to do. Choosing winter for an engagement session doesn't have to mean boring, gray and lifeless. Did you see these photos? Unforgettable.

IT’S MY

BIG

DAY

ALIX AND BEN “We got to talking and never really stopped.” Alix and Ben met when they were just wide-eyed freshman at Iowa State University. When Ben and Alix first started dating he gave her a rosary with a poem saying, “As long as you have this, you will have me.” So later on down the road when Alix received another rosary from Ben she thought it was just a thoughtful birthday gift, but little did she know there was a beautiful diamond ring wrapped inside! As their planning for their big day began Alix and Ben wanted it to be centered around their color theme, soft green. A big hit this summer was natural greens, along with golds, pinks and whites. The couple mirrored that in their wedding 28

through their gorgeous floral arrangements and stationary. Along with planning the decor details for the wedding, Alix said her favorite part of the planning process was the week leading up to the big day. The two loved watching all of their hard work come to life with their motto “It’s good enough.” Alix and Ben said that their biggest piece of advice to engaged couples would be not to stress too much. They loved how their wedding was perfect in it’s own way! Pinterest weddings may look perfect and elegant but they are missing the best part, an Iowa couple! Alix and Ben like to look back on their most memorable part of their wedding: their entrance. The curtain dropped to reveal for the first time, the happy couple! They were able to be around all the people they loved the most all in one place. With the dance floor packed all night and love in the air, Alix and Ben had their happily ever after!

IT’S MY

BIG

DAY

REGAN + DAVE “Make sure you eat some cake, you deserve it!” Regan Doely said after her big day. She wishes she would’ve taken a moment to savor the details, like enjoying the fabulous cake she spent weeks picking out. As your big day gets closer and closer, your dreams start to become a reality. For Regan her reality started in West Des Moines when her soon-to-be fiancée hid a Go-Pro to capture the words she had waited so long to hear. As planning began, Regan wanted to bring her dream wedding to life by creating a vintage, romantic feel. She made her decorations very neutral to let her florals add a pop of color, while staying complementary. She had a difficult time finding

30

a venue that would capture the vintage character she was looking for, but then she finally found the one! She said she loved the antiques, white walls and hardwood floors that really let her decorations take the center stage. Throughout the planning process she said her husband was very helpful, but only had one request, to pick the caterer. Imagine that! Regan also got to make a hobby of hers come to life during her wedding planning, designing stationary. She was a rockstar bride and designed all of her invitations and programs by herself! It was extremely exciting when she saw her talents altogether and sent it to all of their friends and family. Mr. and Mrs. Doely look fondly back on their big day because they got to see all their creations come to life. They said their day was filled with emotions and loved how the pastor was able to personalize their ceremony, it was the icing on the cake! What made it all worth it? Hearing the words, “I now pronounce you Mr. and Mrs. Doely, you may kiss the bride! Best. Day. Ever.

IT’S MY

BIG

DAY

BRIANNE + JOHN

A modern take on the perfect day. Brianne and John met through mutual friends, which then led to being friends on social media. The modern day flirting began, liking and commenting on photos! Their first date was off to a rocky start, Brianne wasn't much for dating, because she was content focusing on her daughter. It took a lot of persuading but Brianne finally said okay, let’s grab dinner. John even asked if he could pick her up and buy flowers and stubbornly Brianne said no. She got there early because surprise nerves set in. When a gorgeous man walked up to her with a huge smile and bouquet of flowers, she melted and knew it was love at first sight. They saw each other every night that week. Eventually chilly February came and they spent the day doing a photo shoot for a local whiskey distillery. Brianne was cold and tired and wanted to grab coffee but John had other plans. He drove to where they had their second date, Des Moines Art Center and Rose Garden. It had started to snow, so Brianne was not excited for their walk in the park. John went to open the door for Brianne and got down on one knee to propose. After she said yes she asked, “Do we still have to walk around the rose garden?” He laughed and said no, so they decided to celebrate with dinner instead. Where she found out their daughters had helped him pick out the ring, which is where the planning began!

32

Together, they knew they didn’t want a cookie cutter wedding. Brianne had always dreamed of a perfect Pinterest styled

wedding and had never thought of the idea of eloping. They

decided to plan their intimate semi-secret wedding in their

favorite hiking spot near their house. They even celebrated their

first dance in their kitchen! They said they wouldn’t change their personal big day for anything, but wanted to celebrate on their one-year anniversary.

Food // Alohana Hawaiian Grill in Ankeny Wedding dress //

They chose the venue Raccoon River Nature Lodge because

For Love & Lemons

they wanted to do a lot of the planning themselves. After the wedding stress began, Brianne said she realized why couples hire wedding coordinators, but she was glad she was able to make it unique to them. Brianne made all the decorations, each and every detail, have a meaningful touch. She hand-made 17 dream catchers because they were married on the 17th. They had pandas hidden in their decorations because that was their nickname for each other. Brianne said it perfectly, when you’re planning your wedding let it reflect the love of you and your husband. The big day is for you! Don’t let family and friends push you to do something you don’t want for your wedding day. They were elated to have their wedding unique to them, to reflect the love they look forward to sharing with each other for the rest of their lives.
