Accent Tier Cake

You can make a statement with your cake when you mix heights or design of your tiers. Try simplifying all of the tiers except for one — this can be the bottom, top or somewhere in the middle.

Classic Tiered Cake by Little Blackbird Bakery You can't go wrong with a classic tiered cake with textured buttercreams. Tiered cakes are still the most popular choice for weddings — even if couples are becoming more creative with the design or personal touches. Photo by Seneca Epley Photography

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT:

Saints Center in Stuart,Iowa If you’re dreaming of a venue with romantic grandeur, look no further than Saints Center, in Stuart, Iowa. This former church was voted the most beautiful in Iowa before it was burned by arson in 1995. After a $4 million restoration project, this old world beauty is now host to many more people and events. As you walk up the stairs, through the large double doors, you’ll enter the Main Hall. This giant room holds the sky blue dome overhead with modern steel beams and original exposed brick walls, perfect for large weddings. It’s a gorgeous venue for a ceremony and can be flipped for the reception. The Foundation Room on the main level features hand-carved limestone walls and the Chapel is even more intimate, with a small altar for a more traditional ceremony. Find out more about this breathtaking gem just 30 mins west of Des Moines at saintscenter.com. Brooke Pavel Photography H E A R T L A N D W E D D I N G I D Photo E A S . CCredit: OM

IT’S MY

BIG

DAY

KATI + MAX Boy and girl live down the street from each other and then one day boy sees girl at bus stop on the first day of 7th grade. The rest is history for these grade school sweethearts. Max says he knew he wanted to marry Kati as soon as he set eyes on her. Aweee! Growing up together and then dating for 15 years allowed for many special memories together. Max’s family had a house in Clear Lake, Iowa and grew up enjoying summer days at their lake house. Soon this became a special tradition for the couple and it seemed right that Max would propose to Kati in a place that had a lot of meaning to them. It was the first boat outing of the season and will go down as one of their favorite nights on the lake as she said, "Yes!" When they planned their wedding, they knew exactly where to have it, the lake! Because June is such a beautiful time of the year, Kati knew that she would let the lush, green outdoors create a romantic backdrop for their wedding. Kati relied on connections and referrals for all her wedding vendors. When working with people that know you personally, it feels more intimate and they truly understand your vision. She felt that everyone went above and beyond to make their dream wedding come to life. The best part of the wedding planning was the venue! Clear Lake will always hold a special place in their heart and they will get to relive those memories and make new ones with every trip to back to the lake.

Kelly and Adam met because of a good wing[wo]man … Adam’s sister, Emily! Emily and Kelly became fast friends while at Iowa State University. It wasn’t long till Kelly met the whole family, including Emily’s handsome brother … And from then on, Adam and Kelly often enjoyed dates around Ames. That’s why when Adam surprised Kelly, he got down on one knee right in front of Thumbs, where they had their first date 4 years prior. Kelly knew she wanted a simple elegance to her wedding, using warm white, flowing taupe bridesmaid dresses and greenery. The Temple for Performing Arts was just the place to inspire that classic style, the natural marble texture of the building quickly became another element that was inspiration for the couple’s stationery. Kelly and Adam used wedding professionals whom they had a personal connection with whenever possible. Their officiant, pianist, makeup artist and stylist/designer were all close friends. Everyone was excited and joyful to help, which meant a lot to the couple. Alex Jimenez of Catering DSM lead the catering and planning at the Temple with ease. Since Kelly and Adam wanted to have both the ceremony and reception there, he made sure the entire day, from getting ready to last dance, ran smoothly.

The night was full of special moments; from Kelly and Adam’s first look right outside the Temple’s doors, to the entire crowd swaying in a circle while the band played Billy Joel’s Piano Man. It was more amazing than the couple could have ever imagined. Kelly tells us, “Enjoy the entire planning process. Look at it as your first big adventure together of your soon-tobe married life! And if you’re changing your last name, make sure to sign your marriage license with it too …”
