50 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

In 1970, a group of parents recognized a growing need in our community. They saw local youth with limited support and limited access to positive, constructive activities. They decided to do something about it. The parents decided to create a space where young people could be greeted with unconditional positive regard. A place where young people could be celebrated for their strengths. And with that, United Action for Youth was born. Since our inception, 50 years ago, we have been nurturing the potential of future generations to CREATE, GROW, and SUCCEED. UAY has grown, adapted, and responded to our community’s needs, all while remaining grounded in our belief that when young people have their needs met, the possibilities are endless. Throughout the past year, UAY focused on providing adults in the community with the information and tools they require to become the adults that youth need and can trust. Our staff provided
Ally Hanten, Director of Programs
professional development trainings to over 800 teachers, social workers, rec center staff, library staff, helping professionals, and parents. We helped them better understand youth brain development, relationship building, and develop tools to better connect with and support youth. Our ability to adapt has been tested in 2020, more than ever before. We quickly pivoted to all virtual programming as COVID threatened our community, ensuring that there was never a gap in services or activities offered. Since the closing of our Youth Center for in-person programming, we have provided almost 675 hours of virtual programming for youth to connect and create, and to receive support in the safest way possible! During this challenging year, UAY has responded to our community’s needs by embracing innovation and flexibility as our guiding principles. Our staff discovered new ways of connecting with youth and families. Innovative virtual programming meant getting youth access to supplies and activities so they could participate. We distributed over 250 activity kits for youth to be able to create art, young families to enjoy the summer, and for youth to focus on self-care. The goal of these kits was to provide resources for connection to help youth feel less alone.
Mickey Hampton, Development Director
UAY appreciates the continued support of our community. We are committed to making our community stronger by increasing the safety and wellbeing of our youth. With your help, UAY will continue meeting the needs of young people and their families for the next 50 years. The possibilities are endless.
Sincerely,
Stu Mullins, Executive Director
