Dear HEART readers, the theme for this eight issue wants to be in tune with the (hot...) season and also with the mood of our readers! Whether you’re back from the holidays, you’re ready to go or you’re just enjoying your city, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that this is being a colorful summer: we still have in our eyes the images of the colors coming from the World Cup in South Africa, the feast of the Expo in Shanghai, the colors of the sea, of the summer dresses... Feel inspired and enjoy our editorials while chilling out! This is our last issue (at least for a while) from Tallinn, starting from the next one HEART will move to Shanghai and we’ll try to give it an asian twist, with insights from this wonderful culture, so far - yet so close - to our western world... A big thanks to all the people who have collaborated with us from Estonia during these first 15 months and to all our readers... enjoy this COLORS issue!

IN OTHER PLACES I AM ONLY AN OBSERVER AND ADMIRER OF THE CRAFT. H: WHICH PLACES HAVE IMPRESSED AND INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST AND WHY? M.B: I ALWAYS START WITH A SKETCH, REVERTING TO MY FINE ARTS/ILLUSTRATION BACKGROUND AND TRAINING. I CREATE A MOTIF, PLAY WITH THE REPEAT AND THEN COLOR AND TEXTURE ARE USUALLY LAST. H: HOW DID YOU END UP SPECIALIZING IN CARPET DESIGN?

M.B: I STUDIED TEXTILE DESIGN AT FIT IN NEW YORK CITY. AFTER GRADUATION, I WORKED AS THE DESIGN DIRECTOR FOR AFRITEX, DESIGNING AFRICAN PRINT FABRICS. LATER, I WORKED FOR NOURISON RUGS,


ONE OF THE LARGEST IMPORTERS OF HANDMADE RUGS IN THE WORLD, AS THEIR FIRST INHOUSE DESIGNER. INITIALLY, I DESIGNED THEIR AREA RUG COLLECTIONS, BUT SOON BECAME DESIGN MANAGER FOR THE COMPANY’S VERY SUCCESSFUL ACCENT RUG DIVISION. AT NOURISON, I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP FASHION FORWARD DESIGNS THAT CHANGED HOW ACCENT RUGS WERE VIEWED. AROUND 2003, I BEGAN THINKING OF CREATING MY OWN COMPANY; HOWEVER, MY FOCUS THEN WAS ON CREATING INNOVATIVE BEDDING DESIGNS FOR THE HOME FURNISHINGS INDUSTRY. IN THE SUMMER OF 2008, I DECIDED TO FOCUS MY PASSION ON CARPET DESIGN AND THAT’S WHEN MY COMPANY BEGAN TO FORM -- MALENE B CUSTOM HANDMADE CARPETS. MY GOAL AS THE PRINCIPAL OF MALENE B IS TO CREATE CARPETS THAT MERGE MY ARTISTIC BACKGROUND AND PASSION FOR GLOBAL TRAVEL. SPORT COURT IN SARCELLES, FRANCE

SPORT COURT BY ECDM architects LOCATED 16 KILOMETRES FROM PARIS, SARCELLES IS PART OF THE BANLIEUE THAT HURRIEDLY ACCOMMODATED THE IMMIGRANTS WHO ARRIVED AT THE END OF THE 50S. WITH A CURRENT POPULATION CLOSE TO 60.000, SARCELLES CONSISTS OF A SMALL OLD CORE AND A HUGE EXPANSION TO THE SOUTH KNOWN AS LE GRAND ENSEMBLE AND CONCEIVED IN 1965 BY JACQUES HENRI-LABOURDETTE. PARADIGM OF AN URBAN PLAN WHERE THE URGENCY OF SOCIAL HOUSING WAS SUCH THAT NO THOUGHT WAS GIVEN TO MITIGATING THE CONFLICTS OF COEXISTENCE, FIFTY YEARS AFTER IT WENT UP THE CITY IS THE SCENE OF CONFRONTATIONS BETWEEN COMMUNITIES OF DIFFERENT BELIEF AND HAS AN UNEMPLOYMENT RATE NEARING 20%. SARCELLITE, THE NAME OF THE DISEASE THAT AFFECTS FRENCH NEIGHBOURHOODS BUILT IN THE LATE 50S, IS NAME AFTER THIS MUNICIPALITY THAT NOW IS THE OBJECT OF AN AMBITIOUS URBAN RENEWAL OPERATION. SUCH IS THE CONTEXT BEHIND THE PROJECT OF CREATING COVER AND ACCESS FOR DISABLED PEOPLE IN A MULTI-SPORT COURT OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOL OF LA TOURELLE. FOR THE ARCHITECTS, MORE THAN BUILDING A ROOF, THE IDEA IS TO EXTRACT THE PRACTICE OF SPORT FROM A SCHOOL CONTEXT, WHERE THE DIMENSIONS IMPOSED BY REGULATIONS WERE NOT POSSIBLE, FOR WHICH REASON THERE COULD ONLY BE A BEGINNERS’ COURT. THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS IS A KIND OF METAPHOR ON THE DESIRE TO REDUCE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ASPIRATIONS OF THE USERS AND THEIR SPORT ACTIVITIES ON ONE HAND, AND THE DOMINANT TECHNICAL AND ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT ON THE OTHER. THE STRUCTURE OF LAMINATED WOOD IS DIFFUSED WITHIN A TUBE COVERED WITH A TRANSLUCENT MATERIAL,WHICH DISTRIBUTES THE LIGHT HOMOGENEOUSLY AND DOES NOT CREATE STRONG CONTRASTS WITH THE WOOD. ADD TO THIS, THE GRAPHICS OF THE GROUND AND A DOUBLE GRILLE AT THE ENDS, TENSED IN ACCORDANCE WITH MODELS OF CURVES THAT TURN THEM INTO TWO ENORMOUS PAIRS OF GLASSES

HOUSE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE BY Herreros Arquitectos THE PROJECT CONVERTS AN EXISTING VERNACULAR STRUCTURE THAT FORMERLY SERVED AS A REFUGE FOR SHEPHERDS INTO A SMALL RESIDENCE FOR OCCASIONAL USE. THE APPROACH CONSISTED OF REPLICATING THE ORIGINAL VOLUME SYMMETRICALLY TO CONSERVE THE ORIGINAL CONDITIONS AND TECHNICAL FUNCTION OF AN APPARENTLY INNOCENT CONSTRUCTION THAT WAS DESIGNED INTELLIGENTLY WHERE ITS ORIENTATION, VENTILATION AND WATER COLLECTION FACILITIES, ETC. SEEING, LIGHTING,VENTILATING OR HEATING ARE VARIOUS OPERATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH TWO INDEPENDENT SYSTEMS OF OPENINGS AND SHUTTERS THAT IMBUE THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN FACES WITH AN AMBIGUOUS AND ENIGMATIC LOOK. THE INTERIOR REPRODUCES THE ORIGINAL AND PRIMITIVE COMPARTMENTS (FOR ANIMALS, SHEPHERDS AND FORAGE) IN TWO DIRECTIONS: NORTH (KITCHEN, BEDROOM AND BATHROOM) AND SOUTH (DINING ROOM, LIVING ROOM AND STUDY). EACH COMPARTMENT CONTAINS ONE SINGLE MAJOR OBJECT (TABLE, SOFA, WRITING DESK, BATH, BED AND COOKER) WHICH SERVES TO DEFINE EACH SPACE AND ITS USE.

CONTEXT THE WORLD EXPO 2010, HELD IN SHANGHAI, CHINA, IS EXPECTED TO BE THE LARGEST WORLD EXPO TO DATE. THE THEME OF THE EXPOSITION WILL BE “BETTER CITY, BETTER LIFE,” AND THE EVENT IS TO TAKE PLACE FROM MAY 1 UNTIL OCTOBER 31, 2010, WITH MORE THAN 192 PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES TO ACCOMMODATE THE 70 MILLION EXPECTED VISITORS. SITE THE KOREA PAVILION IS SITUATED IN ZONE A, DIRECTLY NEIGHBORING THE JAPAN PAVILION AND THE SAUDI ARABIA PAVILION, AND IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE CHINA PAVILION. THE SITE IS AROUND 6000M2, AND IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST LOTS WITHIN THE EXPO COMPOUND. LOCATED ON THE PERIMETER OF THE ZONE, THE SITE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE VIEWS OUT TOWARDS THE HUANGPU RIVER AND THE SHANGHAI SKYLINE IN THE DISTANCE. CONCEPT WITH LAND CULTURE (CHINA) AND SEA CULTURE (JAPAN) SURROUNDING THE PENINSULA, KOREA HAS BEEN PERMEABLE TO IMPORTED CULTURES AND GLOBAL INFLUENCES, WHOSE PROGRESSIVE MIX DEFINES CONTEMPORARY KOREAN SOCIETY. USING ‘CONVERGENCE’ AS THE MAIN THEME, THE KOREA PAVILION IS AN AMALGAMATION OF ‘SIGN’ (SYMBOL) AND ‘SPACE’: SIGNS BECOME SPACES, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY, SPACES BECOME SIGNS. SIGN AS SPACE HAN-GEUL, THE KOREAN ALPHABET, IS THE PRIME ELEMENT OF ‘SIGNS’ WITHIN THE PAVILION. THE OVERALL VOLUME, LIFTED 7.2M ABOVE GROUND LEVEL, IS CREATED BY CONVERGING THESE HAN-GEUL LETTERS, ALLOWING SIGNS TO CREATE THE EXHIBITION SPACE, AND SO THAT THE VISITORS CAN EXPERIENCE THEIR GEOMETRY THROUGH HORIZONTAL,VERTICAL AND DIAGONAL MOVEMENTS. THE PRIMARY GEOMETRIES THAT COMPOSE THE HAN-GEUL LETTERS ARE UNIVERSAL TO OTHER CULTURES, THUS ACTING AS A SORT OF ‘OPEN’ SET OF SIGNS THAT IS ENGAGING TO EVERYONE. THE EXTERIOR SURFACES OF THE KOREA PAVILION ARE CLAD IN 2 TYPES OF PIXELS: HAN-GEUL PIXELS AND ART PIXELS. HAN-GEUL PIXELS ARE WHITE PANELS WITH A RELIEF OF LETTERS IN FOUR DIFFERENT SIZES WHOSE COMBINATION FORMS THE MAJORITY OF THE EXTERIOR, MAINLY THE PERIPHERAL SURFACES. MOST OF THE NON-PERIPHERAL SURFACES ARE COMPOSED OF ART PIXELS, WHICH ARE 45CM X 45CM ALUMINUM PANELS CREATED BY A KOREAN ARTIST, IK-JOONG KANG, WHO IS RENOWNED FOR CREATING MASSIVE ART WALLS OUT OF SMALL HAND-PAINTED TILES, EITHER SELF-PRODUCED OR BY GATHERING FROM AROUND THE WORLD (THUS BEING ANOTHER TYPE OF CONVERGENCE). ABOUT 40,000 OF THESE PANELS WILL TEXTURE THE FAÇADE, CONTRIBUTING A BRIGHT PALETTE OF COLORS, HOPE, AND UNITY THROUGHOUT THE KOREA PAVILION. THE ART PIXELS, INDIVIDUALLY AUTOGRAPHED BY THE ARTIST, WILL BE SOLD AT THE END OF THE EXPO. ALL SALES PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO AN INTERNATIONAL CHARITY ORGANIZATION. NOT ONLY WILL IT RAISE FUNDS FOR A CAUSE, BUT THROUGH THIS SOCIAL AND ARTISTIC PROCESS, THE RECYCLING OF FAÇADE MATERIAL UNITS, AS WORKS OF ART, WILL ALSO ENHANCE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE KOREA PAVILION IN A UNIQUE WAY, BY DIRECTLY AND CRITICALLY ADDRESSING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THIS TEMPORARY STRUCTURE THAT IS ONLY 6-MONTHS IN USE. THE SURFACES WILL PROJECT DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERES DURING THE DAY AND NIGHT, WITH LIGHT AND SHADOWS CREATING DIFFERENT TEXTURES. SEQUENTIAL LIGHTING IS INSTALLED BEHIND THE HANGEUL PIXELS TO HIGHLIGHT THE INDIVIDUAL LETTERS ON THE EXTERIOR FAÇADE AT NIGHT, FURTHER ANIMATING THE PAVILION AS A SIGN (LIKE A TEXT MESSAGE) ON A LARGER SCALE. SPACE AS SIGN BY UNDERSTANDING A MAP TO BE A TYPE OF A SIGN THAT DEPICTS SPACE, WE’VE TRANSLATED THE GROUND LEVEL PILOTI SPACE AS A SIGN, BY MAKING AN ABSTRACT 1/300 SCALE 3D MAP OF A CHARACTERISTIC KOREAN CITY AS ITS SURFACE. THE REST OF THE BUILDING, CONTAINING THE

EXHIBITION SPACE, IS SUSPENDED 7M ABOVE TO CREATE A 40M X 77M FREE, OPEN SPACE GENERATED BY THE MAP. THE MAP BECOMES A SEMI-EXTERIOR LANDSCAPE THAT EXPRESSES THE CONVERGING OF MOUNTAINS, WATER, AND A DENSE METROPOLITAN AREA, AS EXEMPLIFIED BY SEOUL, THE NATIONAL CAPITAL. THIS GROUND FLOOR IS SHADED BY THE MAIN VOLUME AND ADDITIONALLY COOLED BY THE A REPLICA OF A RIVER (MODELED AFTER THE HAN RIVER) FLOWING FROM ONE CORNER TO THE OTHER AS A 5M WIDE, 79M LONG ARTIFICIAL STREAM, WHILE THE NOTABLE MOUNTAINS BECOME STAGES/SEATING/ SPACES FOR THE VISITORS TO ENJOY SHOWS WHILE QUEUED IN LINE TO ENTER THE EXHIBITION SPACE ABOVE, TO IMPROVE THE TYPICAL INVERTED CONDITION THAT MOST VISITORS SPEND MORE TIME WAITING THAN EXPERIENCING THE EXHIBITION ITSELF. THERE IS ALSO A SERIES OF LFD MONITORS, A LARGE LFD SCREEN AND TWO WATER SCREEN PROJECTIONS TO ASSIST THE INTERACTION WITH THE VISITORS. PROGRAM UPON ENTERING THE SECOND LEVEL OF THE PAVILION, THE FLOOR OPENS UP TO A GIGANTIC 3,700M2 EXHIBITION SPACE, THAT IS ENCLOSED IN COMPLETE DARKNESS, TO PROVIDE A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT FOR THE EXHIBITION. WE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPACE BY OPENING IT UP AS AN OPEN FLAT PLANE, TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE AN EXTREMELY HEAVY LOAD OF VISITOR TRAFFIC. THE LEVEL ABOVE CONTAINS THE VIP LOUNGE, PRESS ROOM, CONFERENCE ROOM, AND PROGRAMS FOR THE STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION. ON THE OPPOSITE END OF THE EXHIBITION SPACE (AT THE NORTH-WESTERN SIDE OF THE BUILDING) IS A RESTAURANT WITH ITS OWN SELF-OPERATING CIRCULATION, AND AN ACCESS TO A ROOF GARDEN THAT OVERLOOKS THE HUANGPU RIVER AND SHANGHAI’S SKYLINE.

DESCRIPTION THE PAVILION’S DESIGN IS BORN FROM THE IDEA OF REPRESENTING MEXICO THROUGH ITS TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS THAT HAVEN’T BEEN EXPLOITED IN THESE KINDS OF FAIRS. THE PROPOSAL SCHEME IS CENTERED AROUND THE IDEA OF CREATING A GREEN SPACE WITHIN THE EXPO WHICH AT THE SAME TIME REPRESENTS OUR PREOCCUPATION TO OFFER A BETTER LIFE STANDARD FOR CITIES THROUGH THE RECOVERY OF GREEN AREAS RATHER THAN CREATING A PROTAGONIST BUILDING. THE MEXICAN PAVILION IS A VOLUME DEFINED BY A TALUD (SLOPE) THAT TRANSFORMS ITSELF INTO A PLAZA PRIVILEGING PUBLIC SPACE AS AN URBAN GESTURE WITHIN THE EXPO. SPACE IS DIVIDED IN THREE LEVELS THAT REPRESENT THREE DIFFERENT MOMENTS OF URBAN LIFE IN OUR COUNTRY. THE PAST IS REPRESENTED ON THE PLINTH, PRESENT TIME MEXICO AT THE ENTRANCE LEVEL, AND FUTURE ON THE PLATFORM. THE PAVILION’S MAIN FEATURE LIES WITHIN THE DESIGN OF THE PAPALOTES (KITES), A WORD THAT COMES FROM THE NAHUATL PAPALOTL THAT MEANS BUTTERFLY, USED AS A CULTURAL MEETING POINT BETWEEN MEXICAN AND CHINESE CULTURES. OUR PROPOSAL IS TO LOOK INTO A FUTURE WITH AREAS THAT ARE THOUGHT, DESTINED AND PLANNED SPECIFICALLY FOR LEISURE, THE RECOVERY OF PARKS AND GREEN AREAS, WHERE NEW GENERATIONS MIGHT MEET IN A CITY WITH A “BETTER LIVING”.
