Welcome There are lots of reasons to visit Exeter, but here are just a few to get you started

Exeter is one of the most vibrant, attractive, multilayered and historically fascinating cities in England and to top it all off – is one of the Host Cities for Rugby World Cup 2015. Pre-dating the arrival of the Romans in AD 50, the city’s history is rich and long. This is reflected in its absorbing visitor attractions including its mysterious Underground Passages, award-winning museum, magnificent cathedral, Roman wall and historic quayside. Take a walk through time with Exeter’s Red Coat Guides to experience centuries of captivating heritage. Exeter has a great mix of shops. The city’s sense of individuality is reflected in its large range of independent specialist shops and boutiques offering unique items to buy. The city’s location in the Heart of Devon makes it a melting pot for top chefs to create gastronomic delights with ingredients harvested from the surrounding coast and countryside.

Cathedral Yard From farmers’ markets selling fieldfresh produce to cosy cafés and award-winning restaurants, the city’s taste sensation is celebrated every April at the Exeter Festival of South West Food & Drink.

22 EXETER’S QUAYSIDE

Exeter’s Quayside Exeter’s Quayside is one of the most attractive areas of the city. The city’s wealth from the woollen cloth trade, which reached its peak in the mid 18th century, is evident in the historic buildings here, including warehouses built in 1835 to house cloth and imported goods such as olive oil, wine and salt cod, which are now home to an eclectic mix of retailers including antiques, home furnishings, beautifully crafted jewellery, unusual gifts, local crafts and water sports equipment. The Quayside is a hub of activity, from well-signposted walking and cycling trails to the south west’s largest multimillion pound outdoor education centre. It is also the ideal place to find something good to eat, with cafés, pubs and restaurants lining the river. Exciting events are held on the Quayside all year round, from a monthly evening street food night market to the UK’s only Deep Water Solo Climbing Competition.
