WELCOME ARTISTIC DIRECTOR | LYDIA FAIRHALL Welcome to the 2019 Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival. I wanted to say hi and thank you for welcoming me into the role of Artistic Director for this year’s Festival. What Heart of Gold offers in the landscape of the broader film industry is something special and something worth holding onto. In an era of binge watching, commerce driven storytelling, and the fast pace of cities that drive and push a corporate agenda, Heart of Gold is a long, deep breath of fresh air. It is a Festival that is truly focussed on celebrating you; the wonderful community of filmmakers, audiences and volunteers that are the life force of this unique and magnetic Festival. This year we are looking through the lens of mosaics in both the selection of films and the creation of our beautiful connected events. I have come to realise that mosaics mean something different to everyone. For me it is an extension of our connection to each other, to the land and to our community.

4

♼

We take something broken and make something beautiful out of it. So, in 2019, the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival is an affirmation of the fact that pain is real, but so is hope and that sometimes from brokenness comes deep transformation. Of course, we are also gathering to just generally have a good time, and this year we have selected two extraordinary feature films as well as over 130 incredible short films from every corner of the world. It is our greatest wish that you enjoy this program as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. Much warmth, Lydia Fairhall

HEART OF GOLD PROGRAM 2019

PATRON | AARON PEDERSEN I love that Heart of Gold inspires filmmakers to share stories that have heart and uplift the human spirit. It’s so important to have festivals like Heart of Gold that give opportunities to filmmakers for their work to be screened. When you see your own soul on screen it invigorates you, it really gives you power, it makes you feel stronger, it makes you believe in yourself and that’s what is so great about Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival – it inspires people to believe in themselves and share their stories of hope and inspiration. I am thrilled to be coming to the Festival this year and look forward to meeting the wonderful filmmakers, who have poured their hearts out onto the screen.

MAYOR | MICK CURRAN It is my pleasure to welcome you all to this year’s Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival. This event continues to showcase some of the best artistic talent from our region and around the world. The 2019 line-up is tipped to be one of the best to date and on behalf of Gympie Regional Council I want to encourage you all to immerse yourself in everything this Festival offers. The continued success of the Heart of Gold Film Festival is due to the dedication and passion of the committee, volunteers, sponsors and of course the audience. If you are a visitor to our region take the time to explore. You can see for yourself why the Gympie region is fast becoming the number one choice to live, work and play.

SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS Heart of Gold is proud to support local artists. Check out much-loved singer songwriter Linc Phelps sharing his authentic sounds and heartfelt lyrics in the Gold Bar on Opening Night, as well as daily local singer songwriter sessions throughout the Festival. This year our program design features the work A Life in Progress by Yasmin Parr. Yasmin says: “As a symbol of immortality, the tree grows old, yet it bares seeds that contain its very essence and in this way, the tree becomes immortal. The Cosmic Tree represents all of the beings in the universe on their quest for physical and spiritual nourishment, transformation and liberation, sustenance, union and fertility. In A Life in Progress I am exploring humanities struggle for order and spiritual growth against chaos and disintegration, and the patterns that are found in nature, human behaviour and culture.” Don’t miss the opportunity to learn the art of mosaic making from an artisan with over 19 years of artistic development. Renowned mosaic artist Brett Campbell, will be sharing his skills with us in Prospectors Hall, each day during the Festival. Brett is from the Maleny hinterland and has been commissioned to create vibrant, meaningful mosaic streetscaping artwork across the Sunshine Coast over the years.

CARING FOR CULTURE PO5

FRIDAY 5:30 PM PROSPECTORS HALL

THE SALTWATER STORY & Q&A Jeff Licence |55 min | Australia It’s a story of connection – between the Saltwater People, between generations, between black and white. It’s a story of collaboration – no one makes a canoe alone. It’s a story of co-operation - the paddlers must work together if they are to get anywhere in these shark-infested waters. And it’s a story of continuance – of ancient knowledge now held by just a few, of ensuring that tomorrow’s elders are brought along for the journey today.

CARING FOR COUNTRY PO5

FRIDAY 8:30 PM PROSPECTORS HALL

WARBURDA BUNUNU WATER SHIELD Jason De Santolo | 25 mins | AUST. In the late ’70s, Borroloola elders co-produced a landmark film to expose the threat to their homelands from mining development. In 2019, the eco-battle re-ignites. Scott Wurjuki McDinny’s grandparents were involved in the making of the documentary, Two Laws (SFF premiered the restored film in 2017), as they stood up to protect their Country against mining interests. Forty years on, the Gulf Country region is in peril again, as the area’s sacred waterways are becoming more and more contaminated. Inspired by his forefathers and using ancient song and dance, Garrwa song man Scott is determined to shield his homelands from mining. Director Jason De Santolo follows the trail of the heavy metal pollution, which has made the community’s water unfit to drink, fish or swim in.

SAVING SEAGRASS Gary Hamaguchi | 27 mins | AUST. An exploration of the priceless environment of Roebuck Bay, Western Australia – the traditional lands of the Yawuru people – now under threat on many fronts. The immense bay is home to dugong and turtles, myriads of migrating birds and countless shellfish. It’s also been the food bowl for generations and generations of the Yawuru people. From the intertidal zone to the sweeping sands, it’s a complex chain of survival for the saltwater animals and plants. The seagrass on which much of this diverse ecosystem relies is a bio indicator of the state of the environment. Today, the seagrass is disappearing at an astonishing rate and the local community is doing all it can to monitor the worrying trend and raise awareness. The necessity for science and cultural knowledge to unite and save this special place is at the forefront of Gary Hamaguchi’s visually sumptuous documentary.
