MANAGER NOTES
ood evening and welcome from Tynecastle Park.
I’d like to extend a special welcome to the supporters in attendance tonight. It’s been a long 16 months since we last ran out to our own fans in Gorgie and it is no understatement when I say that we have missed their passion, enthusiasm and love for this club. Though the numbers may be limited this evening, hopefully this is the first step towards packing this stadium full in the near future. It has also been a while since we last played competitive football, with last season ending in April. The players had a summer break and then we brought them back last month. They’ve trained well and I’ve been happy with the application and work ethic. Getting away to Largs for a week was great for team spirit and we’ve been able to get minutes on the pitch for everyone during a series of friendly matches. On the pitch we’ve brought in Alex Cochrane from Brighton, secured Josh Ginnelly on a permanent deal and welcomed back Stephen Kingsley and Jordan Roberts from injury. Some of our young players have impressed in pre-season and will be knocking at the door of the first team this season. Tonight we extend a warm welcome to Paul Hartley, the players and staff of Cove Rangers. Cove have made a flying to start to their SPFL journey and were unlucky not gain promotion from League One last season. In Paul they have an experienced manager, and someone who I know well, as will our supporters. This will be a testing encounter at this stage of the season, but it is one we’re looking forward to. We want to start the year with a bang and we want to give our fans something to shout about. So if you’re here in person, or if you’re watching at home, I hope you enjoy the game. Robbie Neilson

C
raig Gordon will lead the Jambos out of the tunnel tonight with the Captain’s armband proudly strapped to his arm, having recently been named Club Captain for the second time.
CAPTAIN GORDON
The boyhood Jambo captained his team during his first spell in Gorgie and has once again been handed Skipper duties following Steven Naismith’s retirement. “For the second time, it’s a big honour. Everybody knows I grew up a Hearts fan. To come to the club, to play for them, was always a dream,” said Craig. “To add on top of that winning a trophy and getting the captaincy, it’s been fantastic to come back here and achieve what we set out to achieve. Now, on top of that, to have the captaincy going forward is a huge honour for me. “When I left here I was captain, I don’t even know how many years ago that was but it was a while ago. To come back, it’s a special place. It’s always a club I’ve looked out for no matter where I’ve been. “It’s fantastic to get back here and to take that role on and try and improve and add my experience to the younger players coming through, and try and help the guys round about me, that’s the stage of my career I’m at now. “It’s going to be a very enjoyable part of the last few years that I have left to do that and help some of the younger boys come through.” Robbie Neilson had no qualms about handing his former teammate the armband ahead of his team’s return to the Premiership. “Last season, I thought he did really well. He’s got brilliant experience, great leadership capabilities and he’s played at the highest level for a long, long time. “Obviously, he came through the Hearts academy system as well. I’m delighted to have him as the captain this season and I’m sure he’ll do well. “He’s very popular. He leads by example. He’s been over the course in football for a number of years, played at the highest level, played international and still playing international, he went away to the Euros which was great, and we hope he continues to play at that level for us for a number of years. “I think it’s always good to have the guys further back that can communicate. With Craig and his leadership skills you can see it about the place. He’s a top character and he’s definitely earned the job as captain for the club.”

OPPOSITION REPORT COVE RANGERS Less than six months away from their Centurion season, Cove Rangers arrive at Tynecastle this evening looking to kick-start a season which they hope will end with promotion to the second tier of Scottish football. The League One side came all so close to securing a spot in the Championship play-off final last season, losing out to Airdrieonians after a dramatic tie that took them to extra-time. Ahead of the new campaign, however, the Aberdeen side are once again expected to challenge at the top end of the table as they continue to strive towards new heights. They’ve wasted little time in strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign, with experienced duo Ross Draper and Iain Vigurs joining from Ross
County to add further steel to the midfield. Both players join the League One side having played Premiership football last season and Cove fans will be hoping their experience and quality can help give them that extra push required to break into the Championship. In normal times one would expect there to be a warm embrace between the two opposing managers prior to kick-off tonight. Instead, it’ll be fist bump between two Hearts Scottish Cup winners as Robbie Neilson takes on Cove boss Paul Hartley. As one of the most popular Hearts players in recent decades, Sir Paul can also expect a warm Tynecastle welcome from the 2000 Jambos in attendance.
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 13
A brief History Although formed in 1922, Cove didn’t enter the Highland League until the mid-80s. Since the turn of the millennium, they found themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the league – racking up seven league titles and six Highland League Cups in the process. Having moved to their new Balmoral Stadium in 2018, they secured entry to the Scottish League system in 2019 and have been on the rise ever since.

PREVIOUSLY VS COVE The Match The one previous meeting between the two sides took place in the group stages of this very competition three years ago when Craig Levein’s Hearts journeyed north on a fine summer’s night on July 18th 2018. Olly Lee’s first-half opener was complimented by Steven MacLean’s close range strike near the hour mark, but a tense finish was set up when Paul McManus pulled one back for the hosts late on. Craig Levein handed competitive debuts to seven of his summer signings; Zdenek Zlamal, Peter Haring, Bobby Burns, Jake Mulraney, Oliver Bozanic, Lee and MacLean. The Jambos made the breakthrough after 11 minutes. Haring picked up possession and knocked it forward for Lee to play a neat one-two with Lafferty, before the Englishman drilled low from 18-yards and into Stuart McKenzie’s bottom right corner. The Jambos were dominant for large periods and doubled their advantage on 57 minutes. Bozanic’s curling corner was headed goalwards by Haring and MacLean lunged into the six-yard box to stab the ball into the back of the net. Cove pulled one back in the 75th minute. Park was afforded space down the left to get into the box before cutting back for the unmarked McManus to tap into an empty net. That ensured a tense finish but the Jambos saw it out to take all three points and get the competitive campaign off to a successful start. What we Said Christophe Berra: “It was overall a comfortable game, they got a goal that was sloppy on our behalf, basic stuff. “We had the majority of possession, some great chances, great movement around the box and combinations, and on another day there’d have been more goals. “Seven new players, Cove have given Inverness a tough game, they’re on the up and have some good players, but if we’d won 4-1 or 5-1, I don’t think anyone could have said anything against

The Scottish League Cup Winners (October 1958) At the Brown Gymnasium, Tynecastle Park By David Speed Standing Left-to-Right Donald Macleod Hearts’ assistant trainer and an unsung hero during a decade of success. He was Edinburgh born and always a Hearts supporter, but Donald enjoyed a long career as a wing-half with Motherwell, after signing from Whitburn Juniors in 1938. He served in the Navy during the War and played as a guest for Portsmouth before returning to Motherwell in 1946. In 1952, Donald was appointed assistant trainer of Hearts and he extended his activities to coaching and physiotherapy in support of Tommy Walker and John Harvey. Bobby Kirk Bobby always wanted to play for Hearts, but the former miner from Arniston Engine took a long road to Tynecastle by way of Arniston Rangers, Dunfermline Athletic and Raith Rovers. The redoubtable and dependable full-back cost Hearts a bargain £2,500 when he signed from Raith Rovers in 1955. Bobby became a “B” Internationalist and helped win the Scottish
Cup; two Championship titles; and two League Cup Finals. He played in Hearts’ first European games and was released in 1963 after 292 competitive appearances. Freddie Glidden A resolute centre-half, Freddie famously captained Hearts’ Scottish Cup winners in 1956 and played his part in winning the League Cup in 1954 and 1958, and the Championship in 195758. Born at Bonkle, but raised in Stoneyburn, Freddie was recruited from Murrayfield Rovers and farmed out to Whitburn Juniors and Newtongrange Star. The Water Board engineer was then recalled in May 1948 and Freddie recorded 229 competitive appearances, including Hearts’ first two European matches, before joining Dumbarton in March 1959. Gordon Marshall Born at Farnham, as his father was a soldier, this daring and athletic keeper was good enough to play for England U23. Gordon really belongs to Edinburgh and came from Balgreen Rovers in 1956. He was briefly loaned to Dalkeith Thistle, but was in Hearts’ team by 1957 and played 267 competitive
games before joining Newcastle United in 1963 for £17,500. He was the anchor man as Hearts won the Championship in 1957-58 and 195960 and Gordon added three League Cup winners’ medals. He also appeared in the early European ventures. Tommy Walker Awarded an OBE for services to football, Tommy’s contribution to Hearts is unsurpassed. As manager, he was the architect of the teams that won seven domestic trophies and played in European competition for the first time. He also had a distinguished playing career with his creative work being acclaimed after he joined Hearts in 1932 from Linlithgow Rose. Tommy scored a remarkable 224 goals in 408 competitive games for Hearts and although he earned no winners’ medals, he was an established International player. He served in the Army during the War and joined Chelsea in 1946. Tommy then returned in 1948 as assistant manager and took full control in 1951. He fashioned the squads that led Hearts through its finest era and after leaving in 1966, the supporters welcomed his return as a director in 1974.
George Thomson A strong and assertive leftback, or left-half, George was born in Edinburgh and the former Tynecastle Schoolboy Internationalist was signed in 1952 from Slateford Athletic. A plasterer to trade, George was farmed out to Edinburgh City and recalled in 1955. He subsequently earned U23 and League International honours before an £18,000 move to Everton in 1960. George assisted Hearts to win the Championship in 195758 and 1959-60, and the League Cup Finals in 1958 and 1959. He also played in the European Cup matches. John Cumming John’s relentless energy and indomitable spirit steered the team from defence to attack. He stands tall in the history of Hearts, being the only man to have earned all seven winners’ medals during the 1950s and 1960s (two in the Championship; four in the League Cup; and one Scottish Cup). The former miner, who came from Carluke Rovers in 1948, scored 44 goals in 510 competitive games, including Hearts’ first European campaigns. His never-say-die attitude inspired his colleagues with Hearts and Scotland. John was later the club trainer. Willie Bauld Forever the “King of Hearts” and the club’s greatest marksman with 278 goals in 414 competitive games. He came from the Edinburgh mining area of Newcraighall and only injury prevented Willie from being a Scotland regular. Everything he did had class and his heading ability was unrivalled. Signed in 1946 from Musselburgh Union, he was farmed out to Newtongrange Star and loaned to Edinburgh City, before returning in 1948 to spearhead the “Terrible Trio.” He retired in 1962 having assisted Hearts to win two League titles; the Scottish Cup and two League Cup Finals. Willie played in the first European ventures and the King epitomized everything that was good about Hearts.
John Harvey A miner from Wallyford, John was recruited from Ormiston Primrose in 1933. The robust half-back was loaned to Bo’ness and then East Fife where he earned Scottish Cup winners’ medal in 1938. John moved to Kilmarnock that year and had distinguished War service from 1940-46, becoming a Sergeant Instructor of Physical Training. He played as a guest for several clubs, including Hearts, and was appointed assistant trainer at Tynecastle in 1946. Promoted to trainer in 1952, his unique methods helped bring every domestic honour to Tynecastle. John was also trainer of Scotland and Hearts’ manager from 1966-1970. Sitting Left-to-Right John Hamilton A miner from Birkinshaw, near Larkhall, John was a traditional winger, full of speed and energy, who joined Hearts in 1955 from Lesmahagow Juniors. The U23 and League Internationalist was in the squad that won the League in 1957-58, and subsequently earned winners’ medals in three League Cup Finals. John was also prominent in the League winning side of 1959-60 and appeared in many of the club’s initial games in Europe. He went to Watford in 1967 after scoring a notable 116 goals in 410 competitive matches. Jimmy Murray A Tynecastle Schoolboy Internationalist, Jimmy arrived in 1950 from Merchiston Thistle Juveniles. During National Service in the RAF, he played on loan to Reading and in 1957-58, he broke through as a hard-hitting striker when Hearts won the League in record style. Jimmy also appeared for Scotland at the World Cup Finals. The vigorous attacker helped win the League Cup in 1958 and the League title for a second time 1959-60. He then played in Europe before moving to Falkirk 1961, after scoring 81 goals in 143 competitive games. Davie Mackay Born in the capital, the Schoolboy
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 17
Internationalist came from Slateford Athletic and was farmed out to Newtongrange Star where Davie became a Junior Internationalist. Returning in 1952, he was the complete midfield player with great leadership qualities. Davie helped win League Cup in 1954 and 1958, the Scottish Cup in 1956, and the League Championship in 1957-58, when he was captain of Hearts. Davie also played for Scotland at the World Cup Finals before moving to Spurs in March 1959 for a fee of £32,000. He had a glittering career, but when asked about his favourite club: “it was always Hearts.” Jimmy Wardhaugh With the ability to be in the right place at the right time, Jimmy was a potent goal-scorer with a total of 271 goals in 419 competitive games. He was born in Berwick when his father was in the Army, but was raised in Edinburgh and came from Shaftesbury Park Juveniles in 1946. Jimmy assisted Hearts to win the League Cup in 1954 and 1958, the Scottish Cup in 1956, and the Championship in 1957-58. He twice represented Scotland and was a regular League Internationalist before moving to Dunfermline Athletic in 1959 for £2,000. Ian Crawford Born in Edinburgh, Ian was a dynamic winger, a provider of chances and a goal-scorer , as his record of 79 goals in 174 competitive games clearly indicates. He was not recalled by Hibs after a loan to Hamilton Academical and was quickly signed by Hearts in 1954. Ian represented the British Army during National Service and became a Hearts hero by scoring two fine goals in the victorious Cup Final against Celtic in 1956. The U23 Internationalist helped win the Championship in 1957-58 and 1959-60 and also the League Cup in 1958 and 1959. He scored Hearts first goal in Europe and went to West Ham United in 1961.

T
hroughout the most successful decade in the Club’s history, manager Tommy Walker forged close bonds between his talented players by taking them on six post-season tours to destinations as far apart as the USA, South Africa and Australia. I’m going to take a look at the memorabilia associated with Hearts’ tours of the 1950’s.
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 19
Even though Hearts had to travel all the way across North America from the east coast to the west, the six days between the New York and Vancouver encounters with Manchester United were probably the closest Hearts came to a real holiday during their tour. On 23 May, the party flew from New York to Toronto and following a stop over of a little over an hour, flew on to Calgary in the Canadian Rockies arriving some 6 hours later. But given that Calgary was two hours behind New York, the party spent over eight hours flying. The following day was a day off in Calgary but even though the team had no match to play there, the club were still entertained by the Alberta Scottish Association who arranged for mountain tours for the players by private car. Cars were driven by members of the Association including two Hearts fans originally from Edinburgh, Jimmy Frew and Alan Gowans and the players were treated to the sight of bear,
buffalo, moose, deer and chipmunks. From Calgary, the party moved to the Banff Health Resort, high in the mountains. Tommy Walker reported that the open air heated swimming pool boasted a sign saying “Do not throw snowballs at the bathers”. Swimmers in the team weren’t deterred and loved the pool, heated to over eighty degrees.
home from fifteen yards. Twelve minutes later, Viollet passed to Johnny Giles who beat a defender and shot beneath the body of Gordon Marshall. Hearts started the second half more positively and within quarter of an hour, Hearts were level. Bauld fed Blackwood who drew Harry Gregg out of the United goal and slotted home. Then Ian Crawford scored following a great run down the wing by Johnny Hamilton.
The following day, the team flew to Vancouver on the west coast of Canada and after the team checked into the Devonshire Hotel (which was spectacularly demolished in 1981 – check it out on YouTube) preparations started for the match against United on 28 May.
The game looked like a deserved share of the spoils until twelve minutes before the end. As Hearts pushed for a winner, the ball was cleared and suddenly it was a frantic foot race between Alex Dawson and Bobby Kirk. Kirk tried to hit the ball behind with his instep to concede a corner but instead he caught it flush on his toes and it flew past Gordon Marshall for a somewhat fortunate winning own goal for the English side.
Hearts made only one change for the third game against United at the Empire Stadium, Willie Bauld returning at centre forward after Jim McFadzean had deputised in New York. A crowd of over 18,000 watched as United dominated the opening stages of the floodlit game, racing into a two goal lead early in the game. Dennis Viollet was pulling the strings and in the ninth minute, he fed Alex Dawson and the forward shot
The British Columbia Football Association Commission issued an excellent sixteen page programme for the game which sold for 35 cents. Hearts were the stars of the front cover with a team group showing the front row sitting on a couple of tartan travelling rugs. Page three had a welcome from the Commission’s Chairman which reflected on Hearts’ successful visit of 1958, “often the main topic of conversation when local soccer fans have had occasion to reminisce on touring teams that have played here since the War”. There was an acknowledgment too that 1958 had been a significant and painful year from Manchester United which was saluted for its “amazing recovery” from the Munich Air Disaster which “has enabled it to be still considered

by many as one of the finest teams in English football today”. Page four has Hearts pen pictures which stretch across the next page and precede similar (though it must be said lengthier) biographies of the United players which continued on to pages seven and twelve. The unlucky Kirk is described as “an outstanding full back who never missed a match this season” whilst Johnny Hamilton is “a dashing will-‘o-thewisp type of player with the happy capacity for the unexpected goal. Short in stature but a tantalizing elusive player to opposing defenders. United’s Viollet is “one of the leading goalscorers of the First Division and is within sight of establishing a new club record”. He didn’t make it to that record, being surprisingly sold by Matt Busby in 1962. Page six has a team group of the United side and an article headed “Has Canadian Soccer a Future”, the answer being a qualified yes dependent, according to the author, on Canada’s fortunes in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers. History records that the Canadians would withdraw from the competition before a ball had been kicked and didn’t enter the 1966 tournament either. It was to be some years before football took off in Canada.
The centre pages have the teams in 2-3-5 formations surrounded by adverts. Page ten has a welcome for the Canadian Legion and pages eleven to thirteen focus on the local BC AllStars team who were due to meet Hearts on their return to Vancouver and who were keen to avenge their 1-4 defeat in 1958. Pen pictures of the local players take up almost a full page despite none of the players featuring in the match for which the programme was produced! Some of the adverts deserve a mention. The Russian national side was due to visit later that year and their visit was advertised with a drawing of a Cossack dancer kicking a football. Elsewhere, you could get an Austin A55 for $2095 and local hotels competed for the football trade. The Devonshire advertised that “the Hearts” were staying there whilst the Grosvenor Hotel hosted the United side. The New Empire Hotel welcomed “Hearts and Manchester” and the Astor Hotel settled for offering best wishes to “all soccer men”. More from Canada and the USA next time. Gary Cowen is a member of Hearts heritage group and is currently writing a book about the Hearts post-season tours

LETTIE’S A CHARITY CHAMPION: COLLECTING BOOKS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. To launch our new ‘People With Big Hearts’ feature, we met with 8 year old Lettie McGovern who decided to help children of all ages across Edinburgh be able to enjoy reading just as much as she does. Eight year old Lettie McGovern loves football! She currently plays for Currie girls team and enjoys attending Hearts’ Community Coaching at Oriam every Friday. A keen reader and a massive fan of Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Lettie was inspired by his book club initiative which was launched earlier this year to help disadvantaged children across Scotland and England. Lettie’s Mum, Lauren, explains “It hadn’t dawned on her that many children didn’t have books of their own at home. She wanted to do something to help and asked me if she could collect pre-loved books for local children who needed them”. Lauren contacted Big Hearts, the
charity of Heart of Midlothian, a few months ago to share Lettie’s idea and to see what the charity could do with about 100 second hand books. Lettie’s school was a great help and very kindly emailed all parents and posted on social media to share details of the collection. Lettie and her friends from P4, Chloe Hollick and Charlotte Hill (pictured), made posters to put up and family and friends got onboard to help too. The donated books arrived thick and fast and once they had all been collected, Lettie and Lauren set to work counting them. They placed the books in piles in their living room and counted each pile and put a note on top to show how many each contained. Lettie was extremely excited when she added them all up and realised she had managed to collect over 1600 books - “A staggering amount, it was way more than we could have ever expected” said Lauren.
@bighearts
The books are being distributed over the summer by Big Hearts, fulfilling Lettie’s wishes to give these books to families on low income, to refugee children and young people in Kinship Care who will all benefit greatly from receiving them. Lettie comments “The best thing about doing this collection was seeing the number of books that were received and the range for different age groups which means that children of all ages can enjoy reading, like me!” Lettie has another fantastic idea that she can’t wait to share with us soon and to anyone else thinking of doing something similar she says - “definitely do it!” Thank you to everyone who donated a book and a massive well done to Lettie for thinking of others and doing something to help. A true charity champion with a big heart!

St Mirren on 11 March 2020. I was fortunate enough to attend Hearts games last season in my role as photographer so to finally see supporters back was a surreal and most welcome experience.
