TONIGHT'S OPPONENTS
Hearts open their 2020/21 league campaign against a Dundee side who will be gunning for promotion over the course of the next 27 game weeks. Join us as we put the spotlight on the Dens Park outfit and examine the links between the Jambos and the Dee.
The Manager James McPake took his first step into management with Dundee, a move which saw his playing career come to an end having spent the best part of four years at Dens Park.
He retired from playing in January 2018 and initially took up a coaching role within the Dundee youth set up. Following the dismissal of First Team manager Jim McIntyre, however, James soon took over the reins at Dens Park.
The man from Bellshill began his career at Livingston before earning a move down south to Coventry City. In 2012, he moved to Hibs, initially on loan, and featured in a certain Scottish Cup Final in May 2012.
His team were in 3rd place when last seasonʼs Championship was curtailed and heʼs spent the last few months building a side that heʼll no doubt hope will be challenging for automatic promotion.
8 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
The Squad The 20/21 Dundee squad appears to have a fine blend of youth and experience thanks to some shrewd recruitment in recent months. Graham Dorrans, a man with 12 Scotland caps to his name, was a high profile arrival following his departure from Rangers. The 33-year-old will add real quality to the Dee midfield, as will fellow new recruit Charlie Adam. The 34-year-old Dundonian signed for his hometown team following a lengthy spell down south with the likes of Liverpool and Stoke City. With 23 international caps to his name, itʼs clear him and Dorrans will be key operators for McPakeʼs side this season. Elsewhere, experienced defender Lee Ashcroft will add steel to the backline, whilst Celticʼs Jonathan Afolabi and ex-Jambo Osman Sow strengthen their attacking options. The Connections Thereʼs a familiar face between the Dundee sticks in the shape of Jack Hamilton. The 26-year-old came through the Hearts Academy and went on to make over 60 senior appearances for the Jambos before moving to Tayside in 2018. Playing just in front of him in central defence is another Hearts Academy graduate; Jordan McGhee. Jambos will fondly remember his goal against Aberdeen as a 17-year-old and he would go on to play over 70 games for the Gorgie men before departing for Falkirk in 2017. Up top, thereʼs the not so small matter of Osman Sow. A hugely popular player during his time at Tynecastle, the Swedish striker only recently put pen to paper with Dundee having recently enjoyed stints with Dundee Utd and Kilmarnock.
Osman was a pivotal figure in Robbie Neilsonʼs 2014/15 Championship side and left the club in January 2016 after securing a big money move to China. Past Players In the previous issue, we featured Colin Cameron as the man who had turned out for both Hearts and Raith Rovers. Tonight, weʼre dipping back into the pool of 1998 Scottish Cup winning legends to pick out the king of the wing; Mr Neil McCann. Neil broke through at Dens Park, plying his trade with the Dark Blues for four years before moving to Tynecastle in 1996. Under the guidance of Hearts boss Jim Jefferies, Neil flourished in maroon and played a starring role in that yearʼs dramatic League Cup Final against Rangers. Two years later, he was hoisting the Scottish Cup above his head against those very opponents on that magnificent day in May ʼ98. Following spells with Rangers and Southampton, Neil returned to Gorgie in 2006 before going full circle and wrapping up his playing career with Dundee – whom he would later go on to manage. Other players to have turned out for both sides include Tosh McKinlay, Bobby Prentice and most recently, Christophe Berra. The latter spent the second half of last season on loan at Dens Park before returning to Tynecastle ahead of the 20/21 campaign. Head to Head In the 263 competitive games between the two sides to date, Hearts have emerged victorious on 122 occasions. The Dundonians have 81 wins to their name, with the remaining 60 ending all square. Here in Gorgie, the Jambos can take comfort from the fact theyʼve won 60% of their home games against the Dee. The two sides last faced each other in March 2019, when a first half Sean Clare goal earned the boys in maroon all three points at Dens Park.

Why did you start supporting Hearts? My grandad was a massive Hearts fan all his life. I was brought up in a family of Hearts fans and just followed on. What was your first Hearts game? Hearts v Kilmarnock at Tynecastle, October 1999. I had my first Hearts top on and was wrapped up in that famous maroon and white scarf. I was so excited. All of my friends had been saying how amazing it was and I was so excited when my mum said I was allowed to go. She says all I kept saying when we walked into the stadium was “itʼs huge.... wow, itʼs huge!” We drew 2-2 after conceding a goal in the 93rd minute, just after we thought Juanjo had won the game for us. Do you have any favourite memories when it comes to Hearts games you’ve been to? The Scottish Cup Final 2006 win over Gretna. I never watched a single one of the penalties (I never watch them, no matter where we get them). It was also our great family friend Bennyʼs last game before he passed away. I was absolutely gutted he never got to see our 1-5 win against Hibs. He would have loved it, as every Hearts fan did. What are your favourite away days?
Always had ups and downs when Hearts play away from home. I always enjoyed going to Easter Road. We had some special wins there and to be honest, I love a pizza slice from there too. Our 3-1 win there back in 2012, when Rudi Skacel scored, is a favourite of mine. It extended our unbeaten run in Edinburgh Derbies to 9. I also love a trip over the bridge to Kirkcaldy, to play Raith Rovers. Fantastic away day. How does Hearts affect your family and friendships - is football a big part of your life? My whole family are Hearts fans, apart from my dad who is a Celtic fan and my boyfriend who is a Hibs fan. There is always a competitive edge when derbies are played but my boyfriend and I have only watched one together, and that was last season when the Jambos were 3-1 winners at Easter Road. Fair to say I had the bragging rights and dragged them out for a good week! Do you have any favourite players down the years? Iʼve always admired Jamie Walker and was gutted when he left. His goals against Rangers in our 4-1 win at

Tynecastle were definitely my favourites. I always knew in my heart of hearts that he would be back. But I couldnʼt believe he then re-signed for us on my birthday; what a present! Heʼs slowly but surely getting back to his best and will be a massive asset in our quest to be promoted this season. What is the best thing about being a Hearts fan - and the worst? Supporting my local team and proud of it. It wouldnʼt be Hearts if we didnʼt have bad moments but Iʼm always back the following week. I am such a proud Hearts fan, no matter what position we are in. It’s been a tough time recently following Hearts, but are you optimistic about the future? With the Foundation of Hearts and the fantastic fan base, I know we will be absolutely fine. We are blessed with some fantastic young players and itʼs great to see them getting their chance to shine. Weʼll be back where we belong (hopefully next season) and this club will be fully fan owned.

MEMORY LANE
In our continued efforts to improve outcomes of people facing loneliness, Big Hearts recently launched a new Culture & Sport Heritage project. The charity of Heart of Midlothian FC is encouraging supporters to get involved in the creation of a library of written pieces of memorabilia and archived photos retracing the social history of our community! This new Culture and Sport Heritage Project aims to add another strand to Big Heartsʼ evergrowing reminiscence programme. Contributions welcome! We all have incredible stories to tell and the events and people depicted in past memories can be a real force to connect groups from different generations and backgrounds. Big Hearts is looking for Hearts fans interested in sharing their own recollections - funny, heartwarming or surprising stories - about football, music, school, holidays, beloved places, etc. Visit our website to see the range of topics and get involved via our online story submission form: www.bighearts.org.uk

Memories At Home Some of the contributions to the Heritage project have already been published in the Big Heartsʼ Gazette, a printed newspaper distributed twice a month to 200 households across Edinburgh & the Lothians. The Gazette is included in our fortnightly ʻMemories at homeʼ packs, which aim to be opened and enjoyed safely from home. Each pack also contains a personal letter and a series of ʻone memory a dayʼ photo-cards on various themes.
MEETING THE KING Charlie Rogerson has been a Football Memories Volunteer for over 7 years. For Big Hearts, Charlie recalls the time he got to meet ʻThe King of Tynecastle’ Willie Bauld. “My dream after leaving primary school was to attend Tynecastle High School. Much to my disappointment, Tynecastle was full. I therefore had to attend the former Gorgie Public School which was used as an overspill. It was named Pentlands Secondary School and based right next to Coxʼs Glue Factory, now an Aldi store! I remember telling my Dad how disappointed I was, but he cheered me by saying: “Just remember son, your school address is GORGIE ROAD”. I was 12 years old and had only been at the school about a week when the janitor found out me and my pal Andrew were Heartsʼ fans. The following week, he told us that Willie Bauld was in Mrs Cockburnsʼ newsagent shop further along Gorgie Road! Mrs Cockburn was Willie Bauldʼs mother-in-aw. We must have run the fastest mile in history and walked into the shop. Mrs Cockburn asked “Yes boys whit are yea efter” to which we replied rather nervously “Could we see Mr Bauld please”. She immediately shouted: “ Willie there's two laddies here tae see you!” Mr Bauld appeared from the back shop. We had to look twice: the only time we had seen the King of Tynecastle was in a maroon jersey, but here he was dressed normal with shirt & trousers! He asked “Can I help you boys”, to which we replied “Can we have your autograph Mr Bauld”. He then said: “Just call me Willie”. All we had was our school jotters and he signed the back page for us. We thanked him and got on the bus back home. Dumbstruck, not by his autograph, but by being allowed to call him Willie! When I showed my Dad his autograph he enquired “I hope you were not cheeky to him”. I pushed out my chest and said “No Dad he let me call him Willie”.”

A BIT OF
HISTORY
By David Speed
20 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
HEARTS FIRST FIRST HEARTS CRACK AT AT THE THE CRACK LEAGUE CUP CUP LEAGUE At the end of the Second World War, football returned to near normal for season 1946-47, although there was a significant innovation. This was the introduction of an additional competition, the Scottish Football League Cup, which was based on the successful Southern League Cup that had operated during the wartime years. Sections of four clubs would play each other, home and away, with the team gathering the most points progressing to a twolegged Quarter-Final and then a single match Semi-Final and Final. With many service men and woman returning to domestic life and a general feel-good factor throughout the country, football clubs enjoyed a surge in attendances after the war. However, the immediate hopes of Heartsʼ supporters were dashed when Tommy Walker was transferred to Chelsea for a club record of £6,000. He was quickly followed by Archie Garrett and Jimmy Briscoe, who both joined Northampton Town, and the loss of these experienced players affected the team. In mid-September, Hearts problems increased when top striker, Archie Kelly, collided with a post during a League match against Kilmarnock, breaking his collar bone and the upright. Heartsʼ Manager, Davie McLean, did recruit Bobby Dougan and Davie Laing, and he increasingly introduced young prospects. The Manager did not push the youngsters too hard and, as a result, he frequently changed the team. This had an unsettling effect and Hearts did well to finish fourth in the League. A lack of goals let Hearts down, because the defence, marshalled by the veterans, Bob Baxter and Archie Miller, was very sound. Hearts were too inconsistent in the League, but the two cup competitions brought some hope of success. The League Cup commenced on 21 September 1946 with a 2-1 win over Clyde at Shawfield thanks to two goals from the former Haddington Athletic junior, Alex McCrae. He was

part of a youthful attack that included Tommy Sloan (Arthurlie Juniors), Alfie Conn (Inveresk Athletic), Ken Currie (Bayview Youth Club) and Jimmy Wardhaugh (Shaftesbury Park Juveniles). The following Saturday, Heartsʼ players wore numbers on their shirts for the first time when Kilmarnock were defeated 3-1 before 26,757 spectators at Tynecastle Park. The visitors actually led after 11minutes, but Heartsʼ pressure wore them down and Ken Currie scored goals either side of halftime. Alfie Conn scored the third. The next opponents in the Section were Partick Thistle and after a brilliant contest, Hearts drew 4-4 at Firhill. Thistle led by 2-0 and Hearts scored just before and just after half-time, to equalize matters. The home side were then 4-2 ahead after 62 minutes, but Alex McCrae and Tommy Sloan scored in 70 and 73 minutes to make the final score a remarkable 4-4. Clyde were the next opponents and the Tynecastle crowd numbered 30,560 as Hearts progress was exciting. Pressure told after 44 minutes when Ken Currie shot home Hearts first goal. However, in the period before substitutes were allowed, Heartsʼ captain, Bob Baxter, had to limp onto the wing with torn ligaments. Currie scored another after 65 minutes, but Hepburn hit one for Clyde after 78 minutes as the Glasgow side staged a late rally. It was too late and this was a creditable win for Hearts who played most of the game with ten fit men. Former Chesser United and Newtongrange Star defender, James Pithie, came in for Bob Baxter when Hearts travelled to Rugby Park on 19 October 1946 for the return match against Kilmarnock. The Edinburgh men found that craft was not enough against a fast and robust team, and lost by 2-0 before a crowd of 22,000. Going into the final weekend of Section fixtures, Hearts had seven points while Kilmarnock now had six. The maroons needed to at least match the Ayrshire clubʼs result to qualify for the knock-out stage. Despite some injury problems, Hearts and Partick Thistle drew 1-1 at Tynecastle, before a crowd of 31,623. Thistle led after half-an-hour, but a magnificent goal by Jimmy Walker, formerly of Renfrew Juniors, earned a well-merited draw. Walker ran up the wing, cut inside and rifled a drive high into the net amid resounding cheers. A draw was good enough, because Kilmarnock were beaten at home by Clyde and the Section finished with Hearts on 8 points; Clyde 7; Kilmarnock 6; and Partick Thistle 3. The maroons met East Fife in the two-legged Quarter Final stage
and crowd of 20,904 were at the first game when the Fifers won by 1-0 at Tynecastle. Niven was glorious in the Methil teamʼs goal and the “B” Division side never panicked under heavy Hearts pressure. In fact, on the break, they were more dangerous and in 75 minutes, Adams converted a cross from Duncan to win the game. Hearts made a powerful comeback at Methil, although the home side increased their aggregate lead when Morris scored with a backheeler in three minutes. During heavy Hearts pressure, Stewart handled in the box and Bob Baxter made it 1-1 from the spot. Willie Macfarlane, signed from Bathgate Thistle, put Hearts ahead and just on the interval, John Urquhart, formerly with Kikcaldy Old Boys, slammed the maroons into a 3-1 lead and also ahead on aggregate. On 60 minutes, the home team was back in the game when Duncan scored and it was against the run of play when Jimmy Walker made it 4-2 for Hearts. A Semi-Final place was secured after 85 minutes when Walker chased a long ball, and placed it past the advancing keeper to make the final score 5-2 for Hearts (5-3 on aggregate). On 22 March 1947, the Semi-Final against Aberdeen at Easter Road attracted a crowd of 36,201, but it was a demoralized Hearts side that took the field, following a shock defeat in the Scottish Cup at Arbroath. Hearts were also missing, Charlie Cox, Tommy Sloan, Alex McCrae, Alfie Conn and Jimmy Wardhaugh. After 12 minutes, Baird forced home Aberdeenʼs first goal. Archie Kelly sprinted clean through to equalise after 21 minutes and John Urquhart volleyed a second goal for Hearts thirteen minutes later. Hearts lead lasted three minutes, because a headed clearance by David Wood, ex-Parkhead Juniors, flew into his own goal. In the second-half, against a hesitant Hearts defence, Aberdeen ran riot, with a hat-trick from the future Hearts man, George Hamilton, and another from McCall. The Dons were unable to find this form in the Final and lost to Rangers. Hearts team was: Jimmy Brown; Tom McSpadyen and Tom Mackenzie; David Wood, Bob Baxter and Archie Miller; Willie Macfarlane, Ken Currie, Archie Kelly, John Urquhart and Jackie Dewar. Apart from that Semi-Final collapse, it was a fairly decent introduction to the new competition from Hearts and the maroons would eventually win the trophy four times, with our last success coming in 1962-63.

T
hroughout the most successful decade in the Clubʼs history, manager Tommy Walker forged close bonds between his talented players by taking them on six post-season tours to destinations as far apart as the USA, South Africa and Australia. This season, Iʼm going to take a look at the memorabilia associated with Heartsʼ tours of the 1950ʼs.
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 25
A
s Hearts finally reached Australia after their marathon flight, they couldn’t have known that they were being plunged head first into a “football war”. Hearts had been invited to Australia by the national association, the Australian Soccer Association, but in New South Wales, home of the best of the country’s teams and players, the state association had been rocked by the formation of a new organisation, the New South Wales Federation of Soccer Leagues which promised better organisation than the existing state body. As more top Sydney players defected to teams affiliated to the Federation, the NSW Association found that it could no longer compete and, in the weeks immediately before the Hearts tour, gave up control of NSW football to the Federation. To complicate matters further, the Federation had their own tour booked – Saprissa of Costa Rica were touring as guests of the Federation. This didnʼt please the ASA and as a consequence, players with clubs affiliated to the Federation were not chosen for the national side. After a few daysʼ acclimatisation, Hearts were due to face the Australian national team in Sydney but unbeknown to Hearts, it doesnʼt appear that the opposition was being chosen from all the countryʼs top players. That might have something to do with the emphatic 7-1 scoreline in the first match on 9 May 1959 with the local press reporting that Hearts werenʼt really extended in racking up that score. It only took Hearts three minutes of the tour to open the scoring with Jimmy Murray netting from close range. John Cumming got the second and Johnny Hamilton hit a 20-yard rocket to make it 3-0 after half an hour. Willie Bauld made it four shortly before half time from close range and Ian Crawford then grabbed a couple of goals. Alex Young scored a seventh with fifteen minutes still to play. The hosts grabbed a consolation goal with eight minutes to play after a mix-up in the Hearts defence. There wasnʼt much time to relax and recover, though, as Hearts were back in action the very next day against an Australian Select XI in the mining and industrial city of Newcastle, a short ride up the coast from Sydney. Perhaps an indication of the level of challenge to a team of Heartsʼ pedigree lies in the fact that even though ten of the starting XI had played against an international side just 24 hours earlier, they won this match as well, by 6-1. Willie Bauld was the hero this time with a hat-trick. Ian Crawford, Bobby Blackwood and Jimmy Wardhaugh were the other Hearts scorers. A single programme was issued for both matches but perhaps surprisingly, it was the Federation which issued it. Headed “Soccer World”, it was proclaimed as the “Official Programme of NSW Federation of Soccer Leagues” and boasted that it was a souvenir of Hearts in Sydney and Hearts in Newcastle. Two shillings bought the
26 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
brightly coloured 20 page issue. Inside, the editorial on the third page was full of praise for the tourists. Remarking that they were the first Scottish visitors to Australia, the editor said that “it is only fitting that this great club team should be the first. Their great background of soccer tradition makes them worthy ambassadors”. But – and this was something of a theme for Federation publications – they could not resist a little dig at the ASA, continuing that “In welcoming them to Sydney we do so with a tinge of regret that they will not be playing against the best team that Australia can field. The dispute in soccer over the past two seasons has made a great difference to this wonderful game … Some of the worldʼs greatest players have migrated to Australia but because these players are obligated to the NSW Federation of Soccer Clubs, it may not be our privilege to watch them in action”. As if to reinforce the point, the editorial was directly opposite an advert on p.2 for “Costa Rica v NSW Federation”, a reference to Saprissa taking on players who were affiliated with the Federation. This was “A date with soccer you must not miss”. Pages four to six have extensive pen pictures of the Hearts squad including Dave Mackay who had been a Spurs player for almost two months before this programme was issued ! Of Willie Bauld, the editor says that “his brain has conceived many a movement which bore the stamp of class in the days of the devastating work by his colleagues Conn and Wardhaugh”. Thereʼs a page on manager Tommy Walker whose “cheery personality and good sportsmanship will please everybody he comes in contact
with”. The editor writes that “They say the two greatest tragedies in Scottish history were (a) when news was received in Edinburgh that Scotland had been defeated by England in the Battle of Cullodon Moor centuries ago and (b) when Tommy Walker left Heart of Midlothian to play for Chelsea”. Quite an accolade. Page eight had more Federation propaganda. Soccer, it reported was “on the way, and it now only needs officials who are prepared to push the code along”. Like, you might imagine, those in the Federation. “It is difficult to understand”, it continued, “why Hearts, a club team is meeting Australia today. If we are to play club teams, do not ridicule the name of Australia by turning them into Test matches”. Whatever it was called, the 7-1 thrashing showed that the Australians still had a way to go before they could match even club sides.
The teams are in the centre with Australian pen pictures following. The team lines for the match in Newcastle are on p.14 followed by a welcome to “Australiaʼs greatest mining and industrial centre” which “extends the hand of welcome to the Heart of Midlothian”. A couple of action shots of Hearts in domestic action, the teams for warm-up matches and an incomplete list of Heartsʼ tour fixtures complete a nice souvenir of the matches. More from Australia next time. Gary Cowen is a member of Hearts heritage group and is currently writing a book about the Hearts post-season tours
