G

ood afternoon and welcome from Tynecastle Park.

This season has been a campaign like no other, certainly in our lifetime. It has been shrouded in uncertainty, with challenging circumstances that everyone has had to work under. Of course, we are all grateful that we have been able to play an, albeit shortened, season in its entirety and I have to praise the staff and players for their professionalism which has ensured that we have seen the season through to its conclusion. Today is the final home game of the 2020/21 campaign and we go into it as SPFL Championship winners. Matchday 6 saw us go top of the league and it is a position we have stayed in for the past 20 weeks. There have been some fantastic performances, there have been games where we’ve shown grit and determination to get results and, like any other team, there has been occasions where we’ve come up short. One thing that cannot be questioned, however, is our worthiness of being crowned champions and securing an instant return to the top flight. That was the goal when I returned to the club last summer, and I’m pleased that we achieved it. This afternoon we welcome Neil McCann, the players and staff of Inverness Caledonian Thistle to Tynecastle. Inverness have had their own issues to deal with this season and I admire the way that Neil, who I know well, has come in to not just steady the ship but take it forward. They are playing to secure a play-off spot so they will come here to have a go, which should make for an entertaining game. For us, it’s about finishing the season in style with a couple of good results. It’s something we’re more than capable of and we want to end the campaign on a high and take that momentum forward into next season. Thank you for your support throughout the year, I know it has not been easy watching from afar and everyone here is looking forward to welcoming as many fans back to Gorgie when it is safe to do so. Enjoy the game, Robbie Neilson

NEW SOCIAL INCLUSION PROJECT!

Big Hearts is proud to be the first organisation in Scotland running the social inclusion and employability project ‘Welcome through Football’! Funded by the by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union, Welcome Through Football aims to assist in the integration and inclusion of recently arrived young refugees, asylum seekers and young people with a migrant background. The project is based on a range of activities promoting the quality of youth work, the intercultural dialogue and aims to strengthen knowledge and acceptance of diversity in society. Big Hearts is delighted to team up with the European Football Development Network, the organisation behind the More Than Football campaign, to assist in the development of a long-lasting, sustainable methodology based on three phases: •Socialisation to sports: providing different football offerings in relation to their specific requirements, such as language skills or the possibility of trauma. •Socialisation in sports: working on team structure, giving more responsibility to the participants and offering additional opportunities out with the sports training sessions. •Socialisation through sports: Focusing on the skills the participants learn

from taking part in the available offers so that they qualify for further education in and outside of sports. Big Hearts will share best practice with other members of the network running the project in their respective countries: Everton in the Community (England), Fundacao Benfica (Portugal), Shakhtar Social (Ukraine), FC Emmen (Netherlands), Sheffield United Foundation (England) and Apollon Limassol (Cyprus). Along with developing effective methods in reaching out to refugee, migrants and asylums seekers communities, the project aims to develop a Practitioners Guide to be widely used by any interested organisations and sport clubs in Europe. This is a distinctive area of work for our charity and our staff is currently working closely with the various partners across Europe to establish what the project will look like at Tynecastle Park. As a prominent Gorgie organisation, one of the most diverse neighbourhood in Edinburgh, Big Hearts has already built strong relationships with groups and agencies supporting refugees and families newly settled in Scotland. This includes Multicultural Family Base, our partner in the T.E.A.M after school club, along with The Welcoming Edinburgh and the volunteer-led Gorgie Collective. The Team for Me – Grant Young

12 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK

Why did you start supporting Hearts? It was always going to be Hearts. My dad supports Hearts, as did his dad. I was regaled with tales of the Terrible Trio and my dad was told about how brilliant Tommy Walker was by his dad and now my wee boy Luke has to listen to his dad waxing lyrical about John Colquhoun. What was your first Hearts game? I can’t exactly remember my first game but reckon it was season 1977/78 as I saw teams such as Dumbarton, Morton and Queen of the South. My most vivid memories are running up and down the stairs of the terracing in the School End with my younger cousin, Steven, and constantly annoying my dad for money to get a Wagon Wheel and a carton of Kiora. Then occasionally watching in awe as a space appeared in the terrace and a fracas between two fans would take place. To be honest we didn’t watch much football! Do you have any favourite memories when it comes to Hearts games you’ve been to? Wow, that’s a tricky question as I am lucky enough to have been to lots of great games and have many great memories. Three Scottish Cup final wins (three more than I thought I would see, still being a trauma victim of Dens Park in ‘86). Many pumpings of the Hibs; 5-1s, 4-0s, 22 in a row etc. European trips have been absolutely superb, and some memories are best not printed, although a dance-off in Prague deserves a special mention. Anfield was amazing I was with a group of friends who are Liverpool fans as well as Hearts, so when Temps scored the carnage that ensued was crazy. My mate Keith had a broken ankle at the time and somehow ended up three rows in front of me in a crumpled heap. The Scottish Cup semi-final win against Celtic was really special, after the final whistle went it felt like all the demons of the past had suddenly lifted and at that moment, I knew we would go on to beat Hibs in the final. Happy days. What are your favourite away days, and why? Over the last couple of decades, I have very rarely missed a trip to Easter Road; I would hate not to go and then miss something really special. Lots of great goals stick in my mind from those times; JC looping two goals past Jim Leighton, Ryan Stevenson in the League Cup, Aaron Hickey, the two Ollies, Robbo again and again. I remember Phil Stamp scoring the winner late on and my mate Stuart somehow managed clear the crash barrier by leaping over it in celebration, an outstanding piece of athleticism which made me miss Stampy heading off down the tunnel after being red carded. I also can’t finish without mentioning Alim ‘don’t shoot from there’ Ozturk. Crazy celebrations! How does Hearts affect your family and friendships - is football a big part of your life? Hearts is a huge part of my life. I still go to the games with my dad who

is 83 and sit beside his two best friends who having going together since primary school. My son Luke, who is 9, has a season ticket with us. I also go with a group of friends, two of whom I have been best man for. My wife sits in the Main Stand with her two aunties. I am also a collector of Hearts shirts and have built a close friendship with fellow collectors and spend lots of time talking through latest additions etc. The social side is great as well as important; meeting up with friends in the bowling club for a few pints before the game and on occasion ending up in the fans bar after the game and having one too many Morettis. It’s fair to say that weekends revolve around Hearts. Over lockdown I have become a Big Hearts volunteer and contribute the monthly memories gazette. It’s been great meeting people involved in this and learning about all the great things they do for the community. Do you have any favourite players down the years, what can you remember about watching them play and did you ever meet any of your Hearts heroes? John Colquhoun is my all-time favourite; he was a fantastic player, was fouled so many times dusted himself down and then began again, shirt untucked marauding down the wing. He epitomised cool in my eyes, even down to his politics and the music he liked. I would never tire of him tying opposition defenders in knots. I also admired Craig Levein, hands down the best defender I have seen in a Hearts jersey. Lightning fast, heart of lion and just a fantastic player. I have been fortunate to meet a few Hearts players but the most memorable is Stephane Adam. What a guy. He just totally gets Hearts and what he means to the support. I must confess to a bit of man love for the Frenchmen. A special mention for Rudi Skacel too, a true modern Legend. What is the best thing about being a Hearts fan - and the worst? The best is being at a full Tynecastle with the fans roaring on another attack, especially an evening game under the floodlights, suddenly for a split second being totally aware of your surroundings and just soaking it in. Nothing beats that feeling. What a team, what a support and what an atmosphere. The worst is perhaps picking up on the expectancy of younger fans who have been used to a relatively successful period and feel the burden that comes along with that. If things aren’t going right at Tynecastle it can be an unforgiving place. It’s been a tough time recently following Hearts, but are you optimistic about the future? The last 5 years have delivered much off the field that every Hearts fan can be proud of, not so much on the field. The football hasn’t been great and the turnover of players has mirrored that. I am hoping that we can almost press the reset button on our return to the Premiership. Start afresh with a clean slate and have a team that will fight to wear the famous maroon and white. Our aim should be Top 4 every season and that starts next season. C’mon the Hearts.

HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 13

If I’ve got symptoms or I’m asked to take a test – for work or if the rate’s high in my area – I’ll do it. So we can keep moving forward and get back together again.

GOLDEN OLDIES By David Speed Tommy’s Great Day Despite his illustrious playing career with Hearts, Chelsea and Scotland, and his distinguished military service during the Second World War, Hearts’ former manager, Tommy Walker, revealed a personal secret before his team won the Scottish Cup Final in April 1956. Tommy eloquently said, “the place of honour in my life was the day when the headmaster of Bathgate Public School (in the town’s Torphichen Street) paraded the whole school in the playground and called for three hearty cheers for Tommy.” At almost 14 years of age, he had just become Bathgate’s first Schoolboy Internationalist. Tommy’s first appearance was on 18 May 1929 at Ibrox Park, when he scored one of the goals in Scotland’s 4-3 victory over England in an Elementary School International. The young lad from Livingston Station also played in Scotland’s 4-1 win over Northern Ireland on 25 May 1929 at Cliftonville in Belfast. Tommy is readily identified in the team picture, but if a clue is necessary, he has the ball. The Height of Fashion The Hearts players were a stylish group in the pre-season of 1937 as they pounded the streets of Gorgie during a training routine. As they pass one of the Corporation Buildings in McLeod Street, Johnny Harvey, on the right side of the group, seemed to relish

HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 15

the exercise. He probably did, because Johnny was a huge advocate of physical fitness and was a Sergeant Instructor of Physical Training in the Army during the Second World War. Of course, at a later date, Johnny became the distinguished trainer of both Hearts and Scotland. Leading the way is Blackpool-born, Bill Walsh, a terrier-like centre-forward who stood a muscular 5’9” and shot on sight of goal. He made his name with Fleetwood in the Lancashire Combination and was a striking sensation after joining Oldham Athletic of Division Three (North) in November 1933. Bill scored a new club record of 32 goals in 39 League games in 1935-36 and the enterprising attacker then moved to Hearts in May 1936 for a fee

16 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK

of £875. Bill Walsh gave Hearts fine service and he was a prolific marksman who scored 55 goals in 51 appearances, of which 36 goals came in 39 League and Cup matches. On 13 February 1937, Bill even scored a club record of eight goals when Hearts defeated King’s Park from Stirling by 15-0 in the Scottish Cup. On 13 September 1937, Walsh did not feature in the plans of new manager, Frank Moss, and English clubs were advised by circular letter that the striker was available for transfer. On 2 October 1937, Bill Walsh

Hearts took some time in adjusting to the mossy surface and, in fact, they were one goal down at half-time to the Crown side, who wore orange and blue shirts. During the second period, Hearts attacked incessantly and three goals were scored through Rab Henderson John MacPherson and Jimmy Wood, making the final scored, 3-1 to Hearts. That evening, some 65 guests thronged the Glenalbyn Hotel in Huntly Street, where both teams enjoyed a sumptuous dinner, followed by speeches and songs. After an overnight stay, Hearts left Inverness at just after ten o’clock on Sunday morning. Hearts Campaign Boost

went to Millwall for £2,000. Hearts Venture North 23 February 1889, Hearts travelled to Inverness for the first time, in order to help boost the game of football in the Highlands. The maroons faced the Crown Combination which was essentially Crown Football Club, enhanced by a couple of players from other local clubs. Hearts’ train reached Inverness in the early morning and the Edinburgh party went sight-seeing until it was time to head for Crown’s new ground at Millburn, just to the east of the town centre. There they were welcomed by a splendid crowd of between 2,000 and 2,500 who had gathered in fine weather.

Tuberculosis had been a major cause of death in Scotland for many years, particularly in urban areas, and as part of a campaign to eliminate the disease, a national programme for mass X-Ray was launched in Edinburgh in March 1958. This would check if a patient’s lungs were sound and free of the disease and the mass X-Ray drive was a huge success in Edinburgh with 84% of the citizens coming forward. Various incentives were used to encourage participation in the programme and perhaps, many took their lead from the Hearts players who jogged to Springwell House on 5 March 1958 to be X-Rayed as a group. Dutch Design Over the years, the club has regularly re-designed its traditional maroon jersey in order to keep abreast of modern tastes. Some changes have been popular and others not so much. One that had rather mixed reviews was revealed after Hearts had prepared for the 1972-73 season at the National Sports Centre at Papendal in the Netherlands. The new jersey was all white with a maroon

centre-panel, similar to the Dutch giants, Ajax of Amsterdam. There was some doubt about it being suitable for Hearts and the jersey subsequently became associated with a poor season when the manager, Bobby Seith, struggled to find a winning formula. Hearts even suffered a record defeat during this period and finished tenth in the League with only 30 points from 34 games and only 39 goals scored. Hearts also failed to qualify from their League Cup Section and lost to Airdrieonians in the Scottish Cup. It has to be noted that the players wore maroon shirts with a white round neck in the catastrophic record defeat against Hibs, colours that were used from time-to-time during the season. Towards the end of the campaign, a fine new strip of maroon with a V-neck and collar was introduced and that was used the following season. The “Ajax” strip, as modelled by the three young men, Andy Lynch, Jimmy Brown and Eric Carruthers, was cast to history. Into the Light A period of modernization and improvement

of Tynecastle Park took place during the 1950s with significant enhancement of the Grandstand for the benefit of players, the press and the officials. In addition, the standing areas were fully stepped in concrete to help both underfoot conditions and sight-lines. However, the most striking changes occurred in 1957 when floodlights were introduced on four

mighty pylons, and then in 1959, when covered accommodation was provided adjacent to the distillery, running along the Wheatfield side and around the corner into the School End. With regard to floodlighting, Hearts took a cautious approach and both Easter Road and Old Meadowbank had lights, long before Tynecastle. From 1953, a large number of friendly matches were played in England to assess systems and familiarize the team with playing under lights. Hearts even used Easter Road when English clubs came to visit. In actual fact, the maroons first use of lights, in modern times, was at Victoria Park, Newtongrange on 28 October 1952 when a Hearts XI drew 1-1 against the local Star, although the event was spoiled by gale-force winds. Inverness, had no hesitation in seeing the benefit of lighting and led the way for Scottish football with a match at Telford Street Park on 22 March 1933, between Caledonian and Clachnacuddin. A crowd of 2,500 watched a 2-1 win for Caledonian. Arsenal also had floodlights in the 1930s, but it was a long time, partly due to the War, before football under lights was sanctioned for competitive games.

FROM THE VAULT Our club photographer, David Mollison, shines the light on some of his favourite snaps of the season. Looking through my photographs after the recent game against Queen of the South, I smiled at this picture of Liam Boyce appearing to “nutmeg” the referee. It got me wondering where the term ‘nutmeg’ comes from in relation to this particular move on the football pitch. I did some research and came up with many

explanations. Some are not printable here but the most plausible explanation is as follows: During the shipping of nutmegs between America and England when nutmegs were a valuable commodity, unscrupulous traders would put wooden replicas in the sacks, thereby duping or tricking the recipient of the sacks. Being nutmegged implied cleverness on the part of the trickster and stupidity on the part of the victim. The saying caught on in football suggesting that the player whose legs the ball went through had been tricked or “nutmegged”.
