G
ood afternoon and welcome from Tynecastle Park.
It’s perhaps difficult to believe that we’re already into the final third of the season but it has been a strange year. Given everything that is going on, to be sitting top of the league, 13 points clear with 11 games remaining is pleasing. Of course, we would have liked to be heading into today’s game with another win under our belts. Last Friday’s match at Queen of the South was a difficult evening, played on a challenging surface. We didn’t produce the kind of performance that we would have liked but that’s football in the Championship. Sometimes things don’t click on the day but it’s important to continue to pick up points. What we did see, however, was a team that doesn’t know how to give up and will fight until the very end. Today we welcome Anton McElhone, the players and staff of Greenock Morton to Tynecastle. Like us all, Morton have had their own issues to deal with this season but still find themselves in and around the play-off positions so that’s a testament to the resilience they have. We did really well to get a win and a clean sheet at Cappielow earlier in the season so we know how well-drilled they are. As with every game in this league, it is going to be a testing afternoon. We have trained well this week and I’m happy with how our players are progressing. Our new signings are bedding in well and they’re providing competition for places. Everyone is desperate to play and show what they can do, so today we should see a team hungry to perform and bag another three points, and I hope everyone watching at home enjoys the game. JOIN THE CONVERSATION
Last month, our charity Big Hearts launched a new initiative: Talk O’ The Toun. A simple concept were Hearts’ fans get to join Zoom chats with hosts from their favourite football podcasts! The project was initiated when Hearts TV commentator Laurie Dunsire approached Big Hearts’ General Manager Craig Wilson with the idea. As charity of the Club, Big Hearts was delighted to help facilitate a new project maintaining supporters’ wellbeing and increasing social connections between Jambos. Talk O’ The Toun aims to offer supporters a chance at some respite from the struggles of the pandemic and an opportunity to have an informal chat with other Hearts fans, like they used to at the football games or at the pub pre-Covid-19. The calls are free to attend and run via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 7pm. Joining in as volunteers are a small team of the most popular Hearts’ podcasts on the market, ready to lead 90-minutes of football banter, no strings attached. Sessions hosts include: Laurie Dunsire (Scarves Around the Funnel podcast), Daniel McIvor (Perth to Paisley podcast), Liam Corbett (This is My Story podcast) and Robert Borthwick (We Have No Cares podcast). With a different line-up at every session, and a few special guests including 2012 Scottish Cup Winner Andy Webster, supporters are welcome to join in as often as they wish! The first weeks proved very popular and many shared how easy and uplifting the calls had been. Someone said: “I went on last night, it was amazing. I liked the fact there was a relaxed structure and everybody on the call spoke. An absolutely brilliant initiative!”. Another participant explained: “I have attended two of these and they are fantastic. I enjoyed being able to talk about the Club I love with other fellow fans. Once I got signed-up, I have looked forward to it all day.” Registration is essential to receive the Zoom details in advance. Visit our website: www.bighearts.org.uk or email: events@bighearts.org.uk

EDINBURGH MEMORIES Big Heart’s Volunteer Bill Alves grew up in a village called Juniper Green, at the West side of Edinburgh. Here’s some of Bill’s recollections of his childhood in the 1950’s. This article recently featured in Big Hearts’ reminiscence Gazette for older people. “Juniper Green is still recognisable now to what it was like sixty years ago, but shops have nearly all changed. I remember the fruit and veg shop where Mr Forsyth weighed out your purchases and gave me cabbage leaves for free for my tortoise. Mr Middleton ran the Post Office, where I had a paper delivery round in my teens. Back then, there were hardly any cars where I lived in. All the children could play in the street! We got back from school, threw our bag into the house and were out playing until we were dragged in by our mothers for our tea - and straight back out after that! The boys played football and cricket in the summer: jerseys as our goalposts and lamppost as wicket for cricket. Girls would play hopscotch. The mums used to buy a different magazine: Woman’s Weekly or Woman’s Own. They worked a system where they would share the magazines, by swapping them with each other every week - saving money by only buying one magazine, but getting to read them all. I used to go round the houses swapping the mags for the mums. Why? At each house I got sweets for being helpful! The Water of Leith flows down to the sea past Juniper Green. The river and woods were a fantastic playground. As a child I would go down there with jam jars catching minnows and tadpoles, bringing them home (Mum must have loved that). One year we acquired a zinc bath and filled it up with tadpoles. They grew into frogs and were all over the garden (Dad would have loved that). As we grew older, we would build rafts from pallets and oil drums from the nearby paper mill and play on the river. There was a railway line that followed the river, from Balerno to Edinburgh. It closed in the 1960’s and is now a wonderful picturesque woodland walkway. I enjoy it to this day, full of happy memories for me.”

Why did you start supporting Hearts? My grandad was a Hearts fan and first started taking me along to reserve matches at Tynecastle when I used to sit on the wall next to the dug out and chat to the subs (and “coaching” staff), occasionally sharing my sweets with them. This would be around 1970/71. We then progressed to going to some of the “smaller” matches, before eventually starting to go to the big games. What was your first Hearts game? I can’t actually remember my first match, but one of my earliest memories was a game against Celtic when Willie Gibson scored a hat trick, but we managed to lose 4-3. I suppose that was a sign of things to come, as we do seem to have a habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I just remember the noise; you could almost feel it coming from the shed. Do you have any favourite memories when it comes to Hearts games you’ve been to? All time favourite is the 1998 cup final. After all the years of near misses (not to mention deserved relegations), I was beginning to wonder if I would ever see my team lift a major trophy. I turned up with my friends more in hope than expectation, and when we got the penalty I couldn’t bear to watch. The noise when it went in hit me like a wave, and the last 10 minutes seemed to last for about an hour. When the final whistle eventually went, I just stood there thinking of all the near misses we had all suffered. Then I just went absolutely mental, like everyone else. Another favourite was beating Aberdeen to clinch 2nd place in 2006. I was in the Gorgie Stand and when Hartley’s penalty went in it was absolute bedlam. And of course, the 2012 cup final. When the third goal went in the guy behind me threw my 10-year-old son in the air. Fortunately, it was Craig Gordon so he also caught him safely. Craig and I spent the rest of the match screaming for the team to go for the throat and score more goals. What are your favourite away days, and why? I enjoyed a lot of the away trips in the late 70s and early 80s, when you got to visit grounds that weren’t regular away days. I always enjoyed East End Park, as there are plenty of bars nearby and I often had a few in the bar at the ground. Of course, I always enjoy going to Easter Road. Why wouldn’t you when you know that you’ve got a better than even chance of coming away victorious? How does Hearts affect your family and friendships - is football a big part of your life? I’ve gone through phases with the football, from never missing to a game to only seeing a few games a season; depending on whether I was playing sport (rugby not football), what my kids were doing and where I was living at the time. I now live in Spain, so I only get to see live matches on my visits back; but I always try to watch the games on Hearts TV, or at the very least, check the updates. This has always been
the case when I couldn’t make it to games, sometimes resulting in me being caught checking for updates while at weddings etc. Fortunately, all my family are Jambos so I was able to take my daughter (then age 6) to the Gretna final, my son to the Hibs final and both to the Celtic final in 2019. The 2020 final was the same day as my daughter’s 21st birthday, so we watched the game together (see photo). Do you have any favourite players down the years, what can you remember about watching them play and did you ever meet any of your Hearts heroes? My first favourite was Drew Busby. I was fortunate enough to meet him a few times, including one time while I was waiting for autographs and he just told me it was too cold to be waiting around so he took me into the changing rooms and got all the players to sign for me. Other favourites were obviously Robbo and Stephane Adam. I had the pleasure of meeting them in the Gorgie Suite after a game (see photo). They were both absolute gents and happy to pose for photos and chat with each and every fan. I have also bumped into Robbo on various other occasions, including a mutual friend’s wedding in the 80s. Robbo had scored the winner against Hibs that day (I forget which one as there were so many), so I was utterly star-stuck to be sitting at the next table to him that evening What is the best thing about being a Hearts fan and the worst? The best thing about being a Hearts fan is knowing all about their history. There is no club in the world with a history like ours. We don’t always win, but when we do, we know how to enjoy it. Oh, and having Hibs as neighbours. No matter how bad things get, we only need to look across the city and we will always know that things could be worse. The worst thing about being a Hearts fan is the team’s uncanny knack of raising your hopes, only for them to find a new way of dashing them. The 2020 cup final is a perfect example. Terrible for 45 minutes, amazing for the next 45. Struggling at the start of extra time, only to come back again. And even when Celtic miss a penalty, we manage to outdo them by missing the last 2. It’s been a tough time recently following Hearts, but are you optimistic about the future? I’m always optimistic about Hearts’ future. For the first time in my lifetime, we’re financially stable. We actually look like we are building a team that can take us back to the upper end of the top league. I think that we will be in the mix for Europe next season, and for seasons after that. With finances the way they are, I can’t see anyone sustaining a title bid outwith the “Old Firm” (is that still a thing since one of the teams is only 7 years old?), but I think we will be challenging at the right end of the table and making cup finals and semi-finals. Transfer windows have radically altered the method of recruitment in football, but long before this system was introduced, the movement of players was tightly regulated, with unrestricted transfers not being permitted after a deadline date, usually in mid-March. This prevented wealthier clubs from gaining a late advantage in respect of winning honours or avoiding relegation and a weather eye had to be kept on the deadline date. That certainly applied to Hearts in 1947-48 when the team flirted with relegation and quality players had to be secured and blended into the team before 16 March 1948. Hearts did that with some eye-watering moves, one of which involved a record fee between two Scottish clubs. In November 1947, the British transfer record was raised to £20,000 when Tommy Lawton moved from Chelsea to Notts County, while the record between Scottish clubs stood at “nearly” £10,000 which was paid by Hibernian for Leslie Johnston of Clyde. Hearts raised the bar even further by paying Airdrieonians the full sum of £10,000 to acquire the services of Bobby Flavell on 18 December 1947. These were enormous payments at that time and other big cheques were written by Hearts for Arthur Dixon of Clyde, who cost £5,000 on 15 September 1947, and George Hamilton from Aberdeen, who moved to Edinburgh for £8,000 plus Archie Kelly on 30 December 1947. Indeed, Kelly might well have been valued at more than £5,000 which would have established a new record deal. What had possessed Hearts to part with £23,000 and a fine goal scorer in Archie Kelly? Well, as is so often said, football is a results-driven business and Hearts’ results were disappointing, to say the least, until late in the season. Manager, Davie McLean, had come from East Fife in 1941, during the early period of the Second World War. He had been hugely successful with the Fife club and in 1938 they became the only Second Division side to win the Scottish Cup. This was due to his uncanny ability to spot players of outstanding talent and his unswerving belief that Scottish players could match the very best, if they were nurtured from an early age by the country’s major clubs. He was regarded as a man who could guide Hearts through the War and build a solid team for the future. Hearts did fairly well during the first full season after the War, finishing fourth in the League and the maroons were expected to push on in 1947-48. However, the Manager decided to move some older players and others that did not fit into his plans. The loss of Tommy Walker to Chelsea; Andy Black to Manchester City; and both Jimmy Briscoe and Archie Garrett to Northampton Town certainly left him short of experience in attack. This was compounded by a serious knee injury to the up-and-coming Alfie Conn, while in the days of National Service, McLean also lost that marvelous goal scorer, Jimmy Wardhaugh, to the Royal Air Force. There had been nine recruits from the junior grade during the summer, but

they were too raw for the senior team, as were promising youngsters such as John Prentice and also Willie Bauld who had been loaned to Edinburgh City. Nevertheless, the season had a promising start and Hibernian were beaten twice in the League Cup Section. Hearts went on to win the group, although the final Section game brought a 5-2 defeat against Clyde. The Quarter Final was a one-off game at Tynecastle against “B” Division East Fife and a jittery Hearts team lost 4-3 after extra-time. Alarm bells were now sounding. After Hearts were dismissed from the League Cup the team plummeted down the League table. What followed was one the poorest campaigns in a generation, not helped by Hibs’ impressive form. After that reverse against East Fife, Hearts won only two of the next fourteen League matches, although there were no humiliating defeats, thanks to Bobby Parker who marshalled the defence and the splendid goalkeeping of Jimmy Brown. This poor run, including six defeats in a row, ended with a 1-0 victory over Celtic on 3 January 1948 thanks to Bobby Flavell’s first goal for Hearts. The Parkhead side was also struggling at the foot of the League and the Glasgow Herald condemned both clubs for covering up inefficiency by transfers. Ouch! At that time, Hearts’ Directors were able to influence team selection and player recruitment, and they could not contemplate relegation, particularly with Hibernian on their way to winning the League Championship. Results had been so poor that they had ignored the Manager’s cherished youth policy and tried to buy the club out of trouble. After the new men settled down, this would eventually be regarded as a correct short-term decision.
in Hearts’ favour and indeed, the maroons were undefeated in the last ten League fixtures. On the final day of the campaign, Hearts won 2-1 against Rangers at Ibrox, a result which gave Hibs the Championship on points, as against the old goal average system. Hearts had eventually climbed to ninth place in the “A” Division and although this was disappointing, as was the Scottish Cup exit against Airdrieonians, the fans came along in record numbers with a League average gate of 22,694. Extravagant use of the transfer market was clearly the right decision and Davie McLean now had some breathing space to allow his young men to mature. However, he almost resigned due to a perceived lack of faith in his youth policy. He spoke out at the Annual General Meeting on 25 June 1948, saying that he had a clear policy, although this did not always meet with the approval of the Directors. McLean also said that he wanted the club on a sound financial basis and to rear its own players, which would always take five years. The Manager explained that this plan was adversely affected by the War and he did not have experienced men to help build up the team. However, when his object was achieved the team would last ten years. With time and patience he was certain Hearts would be successful. He was proved right, particularly after his request to bring Tommy Walker back from Chelsea as Assistant Manager was agreed.
However, that encouraging win over Celtic was followed by a 4-1 reverse away to Third Lanark who then leapfrogged Hearts and left the maroons second bottom of the League. The following week, Hearts lost 1-0 at home to Dundee and fell to the foot of the table on goal average, below Queens Park, and Airdrieonians.
Hearts’ Manager was soon able to implement some of his plans and on 9 October 1948, he sent out Alfie Conn, Willie Bauld and Jimmy Wardhaugh against East Fife and Hearts ripped open the visitors, winning 6-1. Bauld scored a hat-trick on his senior debut and 24,374 fans witnessed the birth of the “Terrible Trio.” In another inspired move, Bobby Dougan went to centrehalf, where he was a class act, and Bobby Parker moved to right-back.
An encouraging draw against Partick Thistle at Firhill on 31 January arrested the decline and moved Hearts from the foot of the 16-club “A” Division. Flavell and Hamilton started to deliver vital goals and they ended the season as top scorers in the League with six goals each. Unlucky breaks now turned
The rewards from McLean’s youth policy were clearly coming through and when Hearts won the League Cup in October 1954, the club’s first major honour in forty-eight years, eight of the winning team had been recruited during his reign and only one had come from another senior club.

On Tour The 1950’s Tours
T
hroughout the most successful decade in the Club’s history, manager Tommy Walker forged close bonds between his talented players by taking them on six post-season tours to destinations as far apart as the USA, South Africa and Australia. This season, I’m going to take a look at the memorabilia associated with Hearts’ tours of the 1950’s.
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 21
H
earts showed no ill-effects from their arduous tour of Australia in 1959 and, famously, won both the League Cup and the Scottish League in Season 59/60 proving once again that Tommy Walker was astute to realise that the team bonding and understanding developed on a long tour outweighed the fatigue which must have affected the players once they arrived home. Once again, the team was in demand for touring and having been successful following their long trip in 1959, the club were happy to accept the Canadian FA’s invitation to visit Canada for a second time in three years in the summer of 1960. Indeed, to be invited by the Canadian FA twice in three years was a huge honour for Hearts especially as they alternated between English and Scottish clubs. Having been deprived of the services of Dave Mackay and Jimmy Murray in 1958 on World Cup duty for Scotland, the SFA this time found themselves in conflict with the club by selecting three Hearts players for a relatively meaningless three match tour of Europe. John Cumming, Alex Young and Billy Higgins visited Austria, Hungary and Turkey instead of Canada and the USA. This allowed youngsters Andy Kelly and Allan Finlay the chance to tour with the first team. Kelly would make his only first team appearance for Hearts against the Victoria All Stars towards the end of the tour. So, having secured the league title at Love Street, Hearts turned their attention to a tour on which they would play Manchester United on four occasions, twice in Canada and twice in the USA. Tommy Walker and the players would doubtless have relished the chance to take on Matt Busby’s side, still rebuilding after the Munich disaster of 1958. Once again, Hearts produced an itinerary booklet for the players in a similar style to other tours that we have already looked at. Printed by William MacDonald & Co of Abbeyhill, the club badge looks resplendent on the white front cover with the other details in maroon ink. The third page lists the members of the touring party and as usual, they’re listed using their “Sunday names”. James Murray is listed alongside William Bauld and Robert Blackwood. There are three players called James, three Johns and two of each of Gordon, George, Andrew and Robert. One of the Gordons is the legendary Gordon Smith, newly joined this season. Director Robert Tait had withdrawn from the touring party allowing Assistant Trainer Donald McLeod to take his place. Room allocations are next with Bauld and Murray sharing a room. Smith was sharing with George Thomson but you have to spare a thought for Gordon Marshall, Bobby Blackwood and Ian Crawford who were seemingly all sharing a room. A fixture list takes up two pages and then there’s the all-important itinerary. Unlike previous tours, Hearts were flying rather than sailing. So, on 10 May, the players were to assemble at 3pm at Tynecastle to be bussed through to Prestwick airport for a 9.25pm departure for Toronto where the team would be met once again by George Anderson, the Secretary of the Canadian FA and the organiser of the tour. The team would then have a few days in Toronto before facing Manchester United in their
22 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
first game on 14 May. Next stop is listed in the itinerary as Ottawa for a match against Ottawa All Stars before a game against Montreal All Stars on 18 May. As was sometimes the way with these tours, those plans didn’t come to fruition and, as we’ll see, Hearts didn’t play in Ottawa and had two matches in Montreal instead. From there, it was a trip over the border to New York and the promise of a visit to the Latin Quarter Night Club along with Manchester United as guests of the American Soccer League before a match between the clubs in New York the following day. Following that game, there were a few days of genuine holiday planned in Calgary and the Banff Health Resort in the Rockies followed by further games against United in Vancouver and, for the first time, in Los Angeles. The tour was then due to feature games against various representative Canadian sides in Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton and Toronto but again, as we’ll see, it didn’t quite work out as per the printed itinerary and before the tour was over, Hearts found themselves up against English opposition once again. The itinerary continues with notes for the players. They were to travel light with no more than 44lbs – around 20kg – even though they were going for more than a month. Each player was responsible for training kit comprising a towel, a white shirt, black shorts, socks, white rubber shoes and two
pairs of boots. Even though the section is headed “Training and Playing Kit”, there’s no mention of maroon shirts. Perhaps they were only issued for the matches. Incidentally, its not clear whether this kit was to be included in the 44lbs luggage allowance; given the size of football boots in those days, I’d imagine that two pairs would account for a sizeable percentage of the allowance. Finally, there were the usual encouragements almost certainly written by Tommy Walker. He emphasised that Hearts were expected to repay the faith which the Canadian FA had shown in them by inviting them to return to Canada so quickly following the 1958 tour and to strive to do as well in this tour as they had two years previously. He finished by reminding the players that “There is no desire to stifle your enjoyment in the pursuance of high ideals, suffice to say that you are, in some small way, ambassadors of another wonderful country, a grand club and nice families. We know you will fail none of them. Good wishes go with you for a most enjoyable tour and a safe return”. Next time, we’ll look at the first games of the tour. Gary Cowen is a member of Hearts heritage group and is currently writing a book about the Hearts post-season tours
