G
ood afternoon and welcome from Tynecastle Park.
I know everyone is still hurting from our midweek Scottish Cup defeat to Brora Rangers. I was devastated, absolutely gutted. Though you give credit to Brora for the way they competed, ultimately, we were miles off where we need to be. We had a long conversation at the end of the match because it’s not good enough. The standards when you come here need to be miles better. You have a responsibility playing for Hearts. I spoke very openly on Tuesday night when I said it’s not acceptable at this football club and our fans deserve an apology. We have a lot of work, fight and hunger to show to get over this. There will be players who step up and get the team going again and players who can’t. It’s up to us to have players here of a standard that we don’t get that performance again. While we of course welcome Allan Johnston, the players and staff of Queen of the South to Tynecastle this afternoon, today is about making sure that we win and go on to win the league. Our fans have had a rough time of it over the past couple of years so, from our side, we need to make sure we win the league first and then we need to move the club forward and I hope that we can all make that progression together. MORE THAN FOOTBALL Heart of Midlothian is more than a team, or a club. It’s the heart and soul of Edinburgh! At Big Hearts, we are more than an independent charity. We are a family of big-hearted individuals joining forces to improve outcomes in the communities surrounding Tynecastle Park. Throughout 2021/22 we aim to address three main challenges on our doorstep: child poverty, poor mental health and social isolation. Did you know for example that the Edinburgh ward where the Stadium is located, holds the highest rate of child poverty across the whole city of Edinburgh? So how do we support groups most in need? We use the social power of the beautiful game! We are proud to be an active member of the ‘More Than Football’ network, alongside other clubs and charities across Europe including the Barca Foundation, Everton in the Community or Juventus FC. Big Hearts uses the appeal of the Club badge to reach out to adults and children who need our help. We open the doors of the Wheatfield Stand or the Hearts’ Museum to run free programmes of support. The Football Memories project is based on old photos of games to trigger recollections between older people and those living with dementia. The Changing Room initiative, in partnership with SAMH, creates a safe space for male supporters to open up about how they feel and take care of their mental health. Could you help us support others?

Why did you start supporting Hearts? I think, like most Hearts fans, I was born into it. My dad is a lifelong Hearts fan and I have followed in his footsteps. My grandad from my dad’s side wasn’t into football, and my grandad on my mum’s side was a die-hard Hearts fan. My mum tells me that she always had to toast Willie Bauld before dinner every night. So, you could say supporting Hearts is in my blood! What was your first Hearts game? I don’t remember my first game at Tynecastle, unfortunately. Although I do remember (just) being at Tynecastle before it was redeveloped, but I don’t remember which game it was. My first memories of games are from the 1995/96 season, especially being at Hampden for the semi-final v Aberdeen and both teams wearing away kits, as well as the sheer euphoria of scoring so late on. It’s only now that I am older that I fully appreciate how nervy these games can be and how important they are. Do you have any favourite memories when it comes to Hearts games you’ve been to? I’m very fortunate (well, at times) to have had a season ticket since the 1998/99 season. I managed to get a ticket for the 1998 cup final with my dad and some friends and their dads. I can remember so much of that historic day. Waking up and not feeling well, to the point I was close to not going. We went through on a minibus that day. Our tickets were at the end where Adam scored the second and I had my dad to my right and then the walkway. The new stand was getting built at Parkhead and we had glorious sunshine for the afternoon. I recall the goals going in, and then thinking that the original Rangers were going to get a penalty near the end. At the end of the game, I can remember my dad standing in tears saying to me “never forget this day as it might never happen again in your life”. At 11 years old I thought that was a bit grim, but the message has stayed with me till this day. The whole weekend with the parade on the Sunday was an amazing experience. I am very fortune to have experienced that three times now, and hopefully more to come!
followed by far too much alcohol to celebrate. I also remember we met Scott Wilson that day in Behind the Wall in Falkirk. The week after we had a table at hospitality; heckling the great man himself and backing Osman Sow to score first, as we were at table 20. I’m sure the table number sign is still kicking about somewhere in the house. How does Hearts affect your family and friendships - is football a big part of your life? I would say football is a big part of my life. I watch far too much, especially now during the pandemic as there is a game on every night. From a Hearts perspective it is about the day out as much as the match. There is a whole community aspect to it, something that has been highlighted even more just now as we can’t enjoy the proper match day experience. My family is split between Hearts and Hibs. Christmas dinner can be interesting, although you only really hear the Hibees talking about the football when they have managed to scrape a win or are actually doing well. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen very often! Do you have any favourite players down the years, what can you remember about watching them play and did you ever meet any of your Hearts heroes? I think it’s really hard for someone of my generation to pick a favourite player. Going back to my earlier days, a standout was Colin Cameron. ‘Mickey’ was a cracking player and had it all, he was so important to winning the cup in 1998. Gary Naysmith from that team was another fantastic player, as was the late Stefano Salvatori. Skacel and Hartley scored and created so many goals in their respective times at the club and brought everyone so many great memories. Then there are cult heroes like Neil McFarlane and Julien Brellier. I really could go on and on. I was fortunate enough to meet and get my picture taken with Stephane Adam outside of Hampden before beating Hibs 4-0 in the Scottish Cup Semi Final. What is the best thing about being a Hearts fan and the worst?
There have been so many other games that I could mention; Austin McCann scoring late on v Celtic, Kevin Kyle scoring the winner against Hibs Tynecastle and Olly Lee scoring that goal at Easter Road (I will quite happily sing his song at games forever after that goal). I could go on and on with so many more. I’m glad the positive memories outweigh the negative ones.
The best has to be the days out and spending time with friends and family. It’s great to have something that can bring so much joy to so many people I know at one time. Then come the opinions and discussions after the match; about who would be man of the match, the key moments and how bad the ref was. The worst thing is when we get beat and everyone goes in a huff and it spoils the rest of the weekend!
What are your favourite away days?
It’s been a tough time recently following Hearts, but are you optimistic about the future?
Days out at Hampden are normally good trips, and I’ve also enjoyed going up to Aberdeen. The trips over to Dunfermline are good too, with a nice short train journey. Although I would say the away day I have enjoyed most with Hearts was going through to Falkirk the last time we were in the Championship. We knew if we won that day we would win the league, and we ended up winning 3-0 with a great performance. That was
As a football fan I am always hopeful and optimistic. I would like the club to try to develop more youngsters through the academy and nurture them into first team players. I would also like us to compete at the top of the Premiership. Lastly, the utopia would be to win the Premiership just once in my lifetime; is that too much to ask?!

o footballer can make 200 competitive appearances for any club without adding value and it’s no mean feat to remain fit and sharp over an extended period of time. They also have to adjust to different tactics and manager’s preferences; and perform in all weather conditions and variable playing surfaces. In addition, the modern transfer system encourages movement and is a huge factor in the reduction of long-serving players. Accordingly, Craig Gordon deserves great praise for reaching this milestone, because he is one of only sixteen keepers to have played over 100 games for Hearts in national and international competitions. HENRY SMITH Although born at Rigside, Lanarkshire, Henry grew up in Yorkshire, where the ex-miner played non-league before joining Leeds United. Recruited by Hearts in August 1981, he made a remarkable 598 competitive appearances and turned countless games in the maroon’s favour. Henry helped Hearts to move from the First Division to regular European action and three times he assisted the team to runners-up position in the League and to also reach the Cup Final. Henry played three times for Scotland before moving to Ayr United in 1996. JIM CRUICKSHANK Signed from Queens Park in May 1960, Jim gave seventeen years of great service and was worshipped by the supporters. During JIM 544 competitive appearances the Glaswegian keeper repeatedly saved Hearts’ reputation at home and in Europe, but only received a miserly six caps for Scotland. He played in the League Cup Final in 1961-62; the Scottish Cup Finals of 1968 and 1976; and the Texaco Cup Final in 1971. Jim also helped Hearts to within goal average of winning the League in 1964-65 before joining Dumbarton in May 1977. JIMMY BROWN A flamboyant custodian who also commanded the penalty area and organized the defence. During the Second World War, the young man from Methil played for Bayview Youth Club and joined Hearts in July 1942. Jimmy went on to play 360 competitive games while he was also employed as an electrical engineer in the coal mines. He assisted Hearts to reach several cup semi-finals and Jimmy played for the SFA touring team to North America in 1949. A recurring dislocation of a shoulder led to his moving to Kilmarnock in 1953.

CRUICKSHANK JACK HARKNESS Born in Govanhill, Glasgow, Jack’s first senior club was Queens Park where he became one of the famous “Wembley Wizards” who defeated England by 5-1 in 1928. Jack played 12 times for Scotland, with 9 of these appearances coming after he joined Hearts in May 1928. This compensated for the popular and sporting keeper earning no more than a string of local tournament medals during his time with Hearts. Jack played 324 competitive games before a recurring leg injury forced his retiral in April 1937. He became a respected sports journalist. GORDON MARSHALL In every way a top-class custodian who played for England U23, because he was born in Aldershot where his Scottish father was in the forces. Gordon
to Albion Rovers. TOMMY ALLAN A bricklayer to trade, Tommy came from Camlachie in Glasgow and joined Hearts in May 1906 from the junior side, Rutherglen Glencairn. He became one of the club’s finest keepers and played 180 competitive games, assisting the “Maroons” to the Scottish Cup Final in 1907. A year later, the agile custodian was sold to GORDON MARSHALL Sunderland for £350 and played at Roker until May 1911 when a £50 fee brought him back to Tynecastle. Tommy was still good enough to represent the Scottish League and in May 1914, he went to Motherwell for £100. WILLIE WHITE A daring and dependable goalkeeper, Willie joined his brother at Tynecastle in June 1922 after a £750 fee prized him from Hamilton Academical. The Airdrie-born custodian was an instant success, playing 172 competitive games until 1928. His excellent form was underlined by four representative games for the Scottish League. The twenties were lean years for the club, but his superb handling and long clearances did assist Hearts to eight local cup wins. After losing his place to Jack Harkness, Willie went to Southampton for £375 in July 1928. JACK HARKNESS really belonged to Edinburgh and was signed from Balgreen Rovers in July 1956 and then farmed out to Dalkeith Thistle. He came back to play 267 competitive games, assisting Hearts to win the League in 1957-58 and 1959-60; and the League Cup in 1958-59, 1959-60 and 1962-63. Gordon played in Hearts early European ventures before an £18,000 fee took him to Newcastle United in 1963.
GILLES ROUSSET Born at Hyeres, France, Gillies was an imposing 6’5” keeper and a great favourite, due to his calm assurance and breath-taking saves. The French Internationalist played for a number of clubs, including Olympique Lyonnais, Olympique Marseille and finally, Stade Rennais, from where he was signed in November 1995. During 164 competitive games, Gilles helped Hearts to
CRAIG GORDON A Hearts Academy boy, Craig signed his first contract in 1999 and has gone on to earn 55 caps for Scotland. He was part of the Hearts team that finished second in the League in 2005-06 and won the Scottish Cup against Gretna after Craig saved a penalty in the shoot-out. He gained considerable European experience before a move to Sunderland in August 2007 and Craig overcame injury problems to join Celtic in 2014. After a trophy-laden spell, he came back to Hearts in July 2020 and has just extended his total of competitive appearances to 200. WILLIAM WAUGH A big and strapping keeper from Torphichen, Willie was signed from the Secondary Juvenile team, Durhamtown Rangers in December 1928. He was loaned to Third Lanark and Hibs before dislodging Harkness in Hearts’ goal in 1936-37 and going on to play 188 competitive games. Willie helped Hearts to second place in the League in both 1937-38 and the Wartime Regional Division in 1939-40. He also assisted Hearts to the Southern League Cup Final in 1940-41 and played once for Scotland. In 1942, Willie moved on

over 137 competitive games including the famous 2012 Scottish Cup Final win over Hibs. He also helped Hearts to the League Cup Final in 2012-13 and saw European action. Jamie joined Falkirk in July 2014 after Hearts went into administration and remained a popular visitor with Kilmarnock and Raith Rovers. KENNY GARLAND Kenny was born in Edinburgh, but was raised in Cupar and joined Hearts from Newburgh Juniors in October 1965. Kenny turned professional after completing his apprenticeship as a compositor and was Cruickshank’s deputy for almost a decade. He made 131 competitive appearances and it was his misfortune to be in goal when Hearts lost 7-0 to Hibs in 1973. However, he was an excellent keeper and a penalty expert. Kenny became disillusioned as a reserve and in August 1975, he retired from the game and joined the Police force. SANDY KANE Born in Aberdeen, Sandy had a spell in the Army before joining Broxburn Athletic and then signing for Hearts in May 1919. He went on to play 120 competitive games over three seasons and was a fine custodian as Hearts regrouped after the Great War. The highlight of his career was helping Hearts to the Cup Semi-finals in 1921. However, Sandy had a hot temper and his lifestyle had him in conflict with club officials. He was eventually suspended in early 1922 and in August that year, Sandy moved to Reading in the Southern League. ANTTI NIEMI the Scottish Cup Final in 1996 and the League Cup Final in 1996-97. His man-of-the-match display in the Scottish Cup Final of 1998 ensured victory over Rangers. JOHN FAIRBAIRN Born at Alterstone near Peebles, John became a blacksmith in Edinburgh and was one of Hearts’ first professional players in 1893. He was with the junior club, Dalry Albert, before joining Hearts in February 1890. With agility and a fearless approach, John was in the teams that won the Scottish Cup in 1891 and 1896, and the League Internationalist was also in the teams that became Scottish Champions in 1894-95 and 1896-97. He went on to play 146 competitive games through to 1899 when he joined Mossend Swifts. JAMIE MACDONALD Jamie hails from Armadale and developed through Hearts’ Academy. After loans to Musselburgh Athletic Juniors and Queen of the South, Jamie made his Hearts debut in August 2008. He was solid, agile and totally reliable
WILLIE BLACK In May 1916, Willie joined Hearts from his hometown club, Bathgate, in order to cover men on service during the Great War. The burly custodian made 112 competitive appearances and was in the team that took Hearts to the Victory Cup Final in April 1919. However, Willie had a nervous game and never fully recovered after a 3-0 defeat from St.Mirren. In April 1920, he helped the Reserves to win the Central League Cup Final and was loaned to Raith Rovers and Broxburn United before being released in June 1921 and permanently joining the Rovers. ANTTI NIEMI A superlative Finnish Internationalist, Antti was born at Oulu and his work in the lower divisions earned the 6’1” keeper a move to Helsingin JK where he won all the Finnish honours. He joined the Danish club, FC Kobenhavn and then moved to Rangers in 1997. Antti helped to win the League in 1998-99 and after a loan to Charlton Athletic, he signed for Hearts in December 1999 for £260,000. His shot-stopping helped Hearts to third place in the League in 1999-2000 and European action. In August 2002, after 106 competitive appearances he signed for Southampton for a fee of £2 million.

On Tour The 1950’s Tours
T
hroughout the most successful decade in the Club’s history, manager Tommy Walker forged close bonds between his talented players by taking them on six post-season tours to destinations as far apart as the USA, South Africa and Australia. This season, I’m going to take a look at the memorabilia associated with Hearts’ tours of the 1950’s.
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 21
B
efore we move on to the next match of the 1960 tour, I’ve come across a press photo taken at the first match of the tour against Manchester United in Toronto which I mistakenly forgot to include in my article about that game. The photo was taken by local Toronto picture agency FedNews and shows a healthy crowd watching as a tackle involving Gordon Smith wearing the No. 7 jersey for Hearts which allows the ball to break to a United player with Ian Crawford and Andy Bowman awaiting developments in the background. Press photos often have the accompanying caption on the back or to the side and this one’s no different. After giving the date of the snap, it’s headlined “Top Soccer Teams in Action” and the caption then reads “In an exhibition soccer game played at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium between touring squads Manchester United and Hearts of Midlothian, both teams scored twice to end the match in a tie. A midfield duel is seen here during the game which was watched by more than 21,000”. Short on detail but a great picture nonetheless. Skipping forward again to the end of the match in Ottawa, the local press were confident that as Hearts moved to Montreal to face a second Montreal side, Concordia, they would be much harder pressed than they had been against Cantalia in Ottawa. The reason ? The fact that Spain had beaten England 3-0 the previous weekend. The thinking was that the Concordia side were, with two exceptions, all from South America and that “Hearts may be faster but the Spaniards make up for this by making the ball do the running for the player by superb ball control and pin-point passing”. So, on the same night that Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 at Hampden in the greatest European Cup Final of them all, Hearts lined up against their Canadian/ South American/Spanish (!) opponents at the Delorimier Stadium before a crowd of around 6,000. Concordia who were Canadian champions certainly gave Hearts a tougher game than their compatriots coming close to taking the lead twice in the first half. First, Gordon Marshall made a good save from Juan Soto and then Alberto Martinez hit the crossbar from close range. Hearts then had a goal disallowed after Gordon Smith had shot home though the referee had already blown for a foul. In a second half in which tempers began to fray, Hearts took just seven minutes to take the lead. Andy Bowman brought down Norberto Iacono “in rather robust fashion” according to the local paper and after he had received treatment, the referee decided to re-start with a drop ball. Willie Bauld was quicker to the bounce, slipped the ball to Bobby Blackwood and the striker finished with a sharp shot past Luz in the Concordia goal. The visitors had to wait until five minutes from time for their second goal. Bauld played a cross-field pass from the right and Ian Crawford cut inside before stroking the ball into the bottom right corner to seal a 2-0 win for the tourists. The Province of Quebec Football Association issued a twenty page programme for the match which sold for 25 cents. The cover has a somewhat messy design with a number of different fonts and the three drawings of players presenting an incoherent whole. Hearts are billed as Scottish League Champions and Concordia as Canadian Champions. The cover also reveals that the Junior Pipe Band of the 3rd Battalion of the Black Watch will be playing at the match. Inside, we’re treated to a lengthy list of Quebec FA officials

before we have pen pictures of the Hearts squad over pages 5 and 6 which includes heights and weights for each of the players. Only three of the tourists topped the six foot mark and most were 5 foot 7, something which would be seen as extraordinary in the modern game. There’s a great piece on Hearts’ recent triumphs over the next two pages. As the team returned to Gorgie with the League Cup in 1954 “the old grey-stone walls, the smoke-blackened walls, reverberated with the wave after wave of cheering. Women threw maroon rosettes to the team as if Spanish toreadors”. Page 9 has a piece simply headed “Soccer” which sings the praises of the game, presumably aimed at locals who might otherwise be watching American Football or Ice Hockey. The game “embodies all the better qualities of all other competitive sports such as endurance, speed, bodily contact, gracefulness, body and self-control, constant movement with few stoppages of play and a scientific approach unexcelled by any other group game”. The centre pages have the team lines and are followed by pen pictures of the Concordia side. The ages of the Concordia players are listed – all
except one. Andy Bowman’s nemesis, Norberto Iacono is listed as a former Argentina international player and a quick internet search reveals that that was accurate; Iacono had actually played 15 games for Argentina and a healthy 393 matches for River Plate. At the time of the match against Hearts, Iacono was a staggering 41 years old! Other Concordia players had a similarly good pedigree – Rosello had played for Boca Juniors and Lopez for San Lorenzo. Page 15 has “A Short History of the Game of Soccer” which tries to condense that subject to a single page and there’s also a page on soccer skills. A page of Hearts’ honours completes the programme. Adverts include Labatts beer, Adidas soccer boots and one for forthcoming matches in Montreal including an appearance by another Scottish side, Kilmarnock as well as Burnley, Sampdoria and Red Star Belgrade. More from Canada next time. Gary Cowen is a member of Hearts heritage group and is currently writing a book about the Hearts post-season tours

FROM THE VAULT Club Photographer David Mollison picks out some of his favourite images from a season of football behind closed doors. During the recent home match against Greenock Morton, I was watching Michael Smith preparing to take one of his trademark long throw ins. As he leaned against the advertising board, I couldn’t help but notice that he appeared to blend into the cardboard cut-outs of the fans behind him. The cut-outs feature a mix of supporters and

Hearts legends, with the one and only John Cumming taking pride of place four along to the left of Michael’s head. To the right of John is Colin McGregor, a lifelong Hearts supporter who attended his first match with his Dad in 1944. He has only missed 10 home games since! He was at Hampden in 1956 when John Cumming and the rest of the Hearts heroes lifted the Scottish Cup and he remains a season ticket holder, shareholder and FOH contributor to this day, at the age of 80.
