ello and welcome from Tynecastle Park.
Last week’s win against Greenock Morton was a good day for many reasons. First of all, and most importantly, it was an opportunity for the boys to bounce back from the disappointing defeat at Alloa. I’ve said it a few times already but it’s very, very rare that any team will go through an entire season without dropping points or incurring losses, and we’re no different. The Championship is probably the most competitive league in Scotland and everyone is in with a chance of beating each other. Which is why I was very pleased with how the team handled itself at Cappielow. We haven’t had a competitive match there in 33 years so some might not remember, or have never even experienced, Cappielow but it’s a tough place to go. The pitch is bobbly and Morton set out to stifle us, however, we played our game, were patient in our build up and, crucially, we were more clinical in front of goal. Jamie Walker deserves a lot of plaudits for his brace. He’s getting back to full fitness and will be a key player for us. Those strikes were his 46th and 47th goals in a Hearts shirt so fingers crossed he gets to that 50 soon. The win takes us to the top of the league and it’s no secret that we want to stay there. Promotion, and the title, is the aim this season but we will always take each game as it comes and today we welcome Allan Johnston, the players and staff of Queen of the South to Tynecastle. Allan is obviously well-known to our support and he’s doing a great job given the circumstances that he, and everyone else, is facing. As always, especially at home, the onus is on us to take the game by the scruff of the neck and play our style of football that has seen us win 10 of our 12 games this season. I hope that come full time everyone watching at home on Hearts TV is celebrating another three points. Enjoy the game, Robbie Neilson

With just under two weeks before Christmas, the Big Hearts’ staff team is working hard to fulfil over 350 referrals for individuals and families facing loneliness and poverty. Unlike the last four years, we won’t be able to open the Stadium doors on Christmas day. In an unprecedented move for our charity, we’ve decided that instead we will be going on the road to deliver Christmas directly to vulnerable people’s homes! The Big Christmas Raffle The Club’s charity is delighted to host their first raffle, with all proceeds going to their Christmas Appeal. The Team for Me – Fraser Jamieson
12 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
Why did you start supporting Hearts? My dad is a massive Hearts fan and has supported them since the 50s. He started going with his grandad when he was a boy, in turn he started taking me and my brothers when we were old enough and I have never looked back.
fans, so they understand my love for football and Hearts. However, most of my friends (including my best friend of 20 years) are Hibs fans and season ticket holders. That has led to some a friendly rivalries and banter over the years, including me having to not celebrate while sitting in the home end at a derby we won at Easter Road (lots of self-control required).
What was your first Hearts game?
Do you have any favourite players down the years?
My first game, I am told, was a reserve match between Hearts and Patrick Thistle in maybe 90 or 91. I don’t remember anything about it though. The first game I actually remember is Hearts vs Everton in 1993, I’m sure it was a testimonial and we lost 2-0. I remember it because we wore the blue and black Inter Milan style away top and it remains one of my favourite kits to this day. I just remember Tynecastle being so loud, it was brilliant!
I have had many Hearts heroes over the years; Tosh McKinley, Dave McPherson, Neil McCann, Gilles Rousset, Pasquale Bruno and Rudi Skacel, to name but a few. But my favourite player was, and still is, John Robertson. He was my childhood hero and in his prime when I was growing up. Nobody will ever match Robbo for me when it comes to Hearts players.
Do you have any favourite memories when it comes to Hearts games you’ve been to? I have a favourite season, which when I was the ‘Jemma Jambo’ mascot in 04/05. I got to stand in the centre circle at kick off for a Hearts vs Hibs game at Tynie and I will never forget the noise in the stadium. I also remember going to Hampden for the first time in 95, for the semi-final against Airdrie. Although we lost the game I remember being blown away by the size of the stadium. But my favourite memory has to be the 98 Cup Final. It is still to this day the only time I have seen my dad cry, when the ref finally blew the whistle. Coming back from Celtic Park and going straight to Gorgie; the atmosphere was amazing. Then back out for the parade the next day, I will never forget it. Honourable mentions obviously go to the 5-1 game in 2012 and the 10-0 win against Cowdenbeath. What are your favourite away days? I love a trip to a lower league ground for a cup game; best pie I ever had was at East Fife vs Hearts in Methil. I also had a brilliant day out at Ochilview for Stenhousemuir vs Hearts. But my favourite away game was a day trip to Preston for a friendly at Deepdale. The best part of the whole day was the stadium announcer not being able to pronounce any of the Lithuanian names. I also love going to St Mirren Park. One of my brothers lives in Paisley and my nephew is a St Mirren die hard, so always nice to get one up on them! How does Hearts affect your family and friendships - is football a big part of your life? I am obsessed with football and I watch some sort of football almost every single day. I am lucky that both my family and my wife’s family are Hearts
Did you ever meet any of your Hearts heroes? I have met a few Hearts players in my time, including getting my 96 Cup Final shirt signed by Pasquale Bruno. That shirt hung on the wall in my bedroom for years. After playing in goals for Manchester Hearts vs Orwell Hearts in Bolton I was told by the legend Dave Mackay that my goalkeeping kept my team in the game. I thought I was terrible, but I will take it! But my favourite meeting would have to be having an extended chat with cup winning captain Freddie Glidden, about his career and time at Hearts, at a Manchester Hearts player of the year function a few years ago. He had some great stories. What is the best thing about being a Hearts fan - and the worst? There is no better place to go and watch football then Tynecastle, in my opinion it’s the best stadium in the world. There have been ups and downs in my time following Hearts, but I can’t really think of a bad thing because we just take everything in our stride. The absolute best thing about following Hearts is that every second Saturday, between August and May, I get to have a few pints and watch football with my dad. Going to the football and spending that time with him is the best thing about being a Hearts fan. It’s been a tough time recently following Hearts, but are you optimistic about the future? As a football fan there will always be peaks and troughs, but I know we will bounce back from the hard times and we will have highs again; hopefully starting in the cup final against Celtic. Fan ownership is an exciting prospect and although there will be tough times in the future, I will always be blindly optimistic.

7-2-1891 Heart of Midlothian 1 Dumbarton 0 (Hampden Park: 12,000) The attendance at Hearts’ first Cup Final was remarkable, considering that no Glasgow team was involved, and it included around 3,000 enthusiastic supporters from the capital. The game was played at the second Hampden Park, which became Cathkin Park, the home of Third Lanark. The crowd witnessed a tight and exciting contest that was decided by a goal after fifteen minutes. Despite some reports claiming that Davie Russell scored the winning goal, it was definitely Willie Mason, signed from Wishaw Thistle, who ended a neat passing movement with a crisp low shot. That season, Dumbarton shared the League Championship with Rangers, but they were unable to overcome Hearts’ disciplined defence and were always vulnerable to the fast breaks of George Scott. Hearts’ team was: Jock Fairbairn; Jimmy Adams and George Goodfellow; Isaac Begbie (Captain), John MacPherson and Johnny Hill; Willie Taylor, Willie Mason, Davie Russell, George Scott and Davie Baird. It is not known if there was a programme for the match, but the Hearts pen-pictures would have looked as follows: JOHN FAIRBAIRN Hearts’ goalkeeper covers a lack of inches with splendid agility and a fearless approach. The 19-year old custodian hails from the farming hamlet of Altarstone, near Peebles, but his family moved to Edinburgh when he was a youngster and John works locally as a fireman. The young keeper signed for Hearts in February 1890 after catching the eye with Fountain Star Juveniles and then our junior neighbours, Dalry Albert. Popularly known as “Jock,” he replaced Willie Gibson in goal at the Quarter Final stage of the Scottish Cup when Hearts defeated East Stirlingshire. JAMES ADAMS A stone-mason to trade, Edinburgh-born, “Jimmy” Adams, commands the defence with his loud and booming voice. The 26-year old full-back is a crisp tackler, but stands out because, as a noted sprinter, he can press forward and recover quickly. He surely deserved his cap for Scotland against Ireland in 1889. Jimmy has earned four winners’ medals in local competitions since joining Hearts in January 1886 from Norton Park. He also played at the opening of Tynecastle Park and in Hearts’ first Scottish League match. In the Cup Quarter Final, Jimmy was the centre of a protest when he punched a goal bound shot off the line. GEORGE GOODFELLOW Although stout tackling is his main asset, “Doddie” is also a good exponent of overlapping play. The 21-year old full-back comes from Leith where he works as a corn warehouseman. A restless soul, George gained early experience with Leith Albion, Leith Athletic, Leith Windsor, Claremont Park and St.Bernards Reserves. He returned to Claremont Park and in August 1889, George stepped-up to Hearts. On 14 March 1890, playing on the right side of the defence, George helped the Reserves to win the Edinburgh Second XI Cup. He is now looking to add a medal from the big one, after playing in all six Scottish Cup ties this season. ISAAC BEGBIE Born a stone’s throw from the ground, Isaac (22) is a Gorgie-boy who works as a dairyman in his parents’ business. He played as a youngster with Pentland Juveniles and Western FC, and was then recruited by the junior side, Dalry Albert. In August 1888, Isaac joined Hearts from the Albert and is very popular, due to his powerful presence and leadership skills. He played for Scotland against Ireland in March 1890 and Isaac has already earned three winners’ medals in local competitions. The team play off his ball winning and drive, and Isaac scored Hearts first-ever goal in the Scottish League. He will captain Hearts in the Cup Final. JOHN MACPHERSON A centre-half of the highest order, 27-year old John MacPherson comes from Jerviston,

near Motherwell where he is employed as a girder works’ labourer. John expertly links defence and attack, and his rugged tackling and thunderous shots are famous. Indeed, he has scored three goals in Hearts’ Scottish Cup run. John played for Alpha, Cambuslang and Motherwell, before joining Hearts in August 1888. He has represented both Lanarkshire and the Eastern Association and is tipped to play for Scotland. John assisted Hearts to victory in the Rosebery Charity Cup in 1889-90 and played in the club’s first-ever Scottish League match. JOHN HILL “Johnny” Hill possesses an outstanding work-rate, great vision and immaculate distribution skills. As a result, he commands total respect and was a former captain of Hearts. Johnny (28) comes from the village of Plains, near Airdrie, where he is employed in a paper mill. After playing locally for Glengowan FC and Plains Bluebell, he joined Airdrieonians in 1884 and was then recruited by the famous Queens Park club. Johnny was lured to Hearts in April 1888 and the classy half-back became an immediate star in Edinburgh. Johnny has already assisted Hearts to victory in two East of Scotland Shield Finals and one in the Charity Cup. WILLIAM TAYLOR Willie Taylor (21) was born in Causewayside, Edinburgh and is a joiner to trade. He was a fine right-winger with the junior club, Primrose, and was recruited by Hearts in January 1889. He is known as “Cocky” due to his graceful style and the winger not only creates chances, but has an eye for goal. Indeed, Willie scored in both the successful East of Scotland Shield and Rosebery Charity Cup Finals in 1889-1890. He also played in the club’s first-ever League match in August 1890 against Rangers. His clever dribbling and passing are a feature of Hearts team and Willie is an internationalist in the making. WILLIAM MASON Standing only 5’5”, Willie’s main strength is clever passing and the ability to hold-off aggressive defenders. The 22-year old attacker is a coal miner who was born in Carfin and learned his football with Carfin Shamrock, Motherwell and Wishaw Thistle. He was signed from the Wishaw club in March 1890, just in time to help Hearts win the Rosebery Charity Cup Final
against Leith Athletic. Willie played in the club’s first-ever League game on 16 August 1890 and did well, despite Hearts’ 5-2 defeat from Rangers. He has ambitions to play professionally and a number of leading English sides are closely watching Willie’s progress. DAVID RUSSELL A 20-year old shale miner, ‘Davie” Russell was signed from Broxburn FC in September 1890. His pace, hard-hitting style and distribution skills have made a positive impact and the attacker is currently attracting interest from English professional clubs, including the mighty Preston North End. Davie was born at Shotts and he stood-out in junior circles with East Benhar Heatherbell. After his family moved to Broxburn, Davie became a star with the local team and he also represented the East of Scotland Association. He makes goals with his presence in the box and has scored five times during Hearts’ march to the Cup Final. GEORGE SCOTT A forceful, left-sided attacker, George (25) has a splendid shot and he has already scored seven goals in this season’s Cup-run. He hails from Springfield, near Leven, but has lived in Glasgow for many years and is employed as a boiler-maker in the railway works at Cowlairs. George helped Hearts to win the Shield and the Charity Cup last season and his regular goal-scoring is priceless. He was also a fine marksman with Cowlairs from which club he was signed by Hearts in March 1889. The bustling forward is now regarded as one of the best uncapped players in Scotland. DAVIE BAIRD Sprightly, elusive and adaptable, Davie is a darling of the supporters and has already represented Scotland (against Ireland in March 1890). The 21-year old printer-compositor, from the capital’s Silvermills district, started with Sir Walter Athletic and progressed to the junior side, Primrose, from where he signed for Hearts in August 1888. He is known for his electric runs and splendid crosses, and can be relied upon for a goal. Davie has already helped Hearts to win three local honours and played in the club’s first League Championship fixture in August 1890 (against Rangers). He could be Hearts’ ace in the Cup Final.

HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 21
Throughout the most successful decade in the Club’s history, manager Tommy Walker forged close bonds between his talented players by taking them on six post-season tours to destinations as far apart as the USA, South Africa and Australia. This season, I’m going to take a look at the memorabilia associated with Hearts’ tours of the 1950’s. The day after their third 7-1 trouncing of Australia, Hearts had another match to play, this time against South Coast at Wollongong Showground. Wollongong was another industrial city, famed for its steelmaking. Jimmy Wardhaugh reported in the Evening News that Hearts had had a “beautiful run down the coast” some fifty miles from Sydney. The game itself, however, was a different story. Played “on a very poor surface”, the South Coast players “played as hard as some of their metals but preferred to play the man rather than the ball”. Twenty-five minutes into the match, the rough play of the South Coast men almost resulted in disaster for the tour as their centre forward, Charlie Stewart, clattered into Gordon Marshall in the Hearts goal. Marshall was helped from the field and whisked to hospital with a suspected fractured jaw. The giant Jim Fotheringham took over between the sticks. The injury to Marshall apparently rattled the Hearts players somewhat and South Coast had a decent spell but they were no match for Hearts even though the players had played the previous day. Hearts were 3-0 ahead at half time and added another four after the interval to win 7-0. Willie Bauld and Alex Young shared four of the goals equally with Jimmy Wardhaugh, George Thomson and Johnny Hamilton also on target. After an X-ray and a night of observation in hospital, it was announced that whilst Marshall had had to have a tooth extracted, he hadn’t fractured his jaw. Just as well for Hearts who didn’t have a second keeper with them and would have struggled to bring one out for the remaining eight games of the tour. South Coast issued an attractive eight page programme for the match which sold for one shilling. The cover has an action photo from one of the earlier matches against Australia contained within a maroon heart surrounded by the match details. South Coast were billed, ominously, as “Heart of the Steel Coast”. The programme is a delight containing numerous small articles relating bits of Hearts’ history although it is fair to say that many of them appeared in earlier programmes from the tour, suggesting that many of the issuers were taking their information from a central source. I mentioned in the last article the suggestion in the Australia programme that Hearts had been founded in 1774 and this suggestion is taken one step further in this issue. The author writes that “It is believed that Hearts were formed in 1773 or 1774. In 1775 a group of Irishmen formed the Hibernian club and the battle was on. And what a battle it was”. To make that mistake once might have been a typo but this is truly strange. Gordon Lewis, the President of the Illiwarra District Soccer Association penned a welcome to Hearts and acknowledged the part which Scottish
22 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
immigrants had played in the industrial strength of the region. “We feel that you will be among friends”, he wrote, “and you will probably understand the accents of some of the spectators better than we”. The centre pages have a Hearts team group, the anticipated team line-up’s, some pictures of the South Coast players and the teams for the Under 14 and Under 16 warm-up games. There’s then a page of pen pictures of the Hearts and South Coast players – seven of the South Coast players played for the Corrimal club, probably the nearest Hearts had come to playing against a club side. Page seven has a nice article about Alex Young’s first season in the side when he scored a hat-trick, won a Scottish Cup medal and played for Scotland’s Under 23’s. Even the back cover has some small articles – the story of McCrae’s and Hearts’ previous tours feature on the rear cover alongside an advert for “His World”, the “Centre for all South Coast Soccer Men” which advertised Hotspur laceless boots for £8/4/6 and Sykes’ Zig-Zag Laceless “as used in UK Cup Finals” for £9/15/6. I’ve also seen a ticket for this match courtesy of fellow collector Colin Robertson. I’m not sure who had the job of working out what colour to use for the tickets but you might be forgiven for thinking he hadn’t done his homework when you see the bright emerald green ticket. This was a complimentary ticket for the game which has no flourishes other than the match details and the signature of Mr Arrowsmith, the Secretary of the Illiwara District Soccer Association.
Then it was on to the next game on 27 May against New South Wales. But yet again, Hearts got caught in the cross-fire of Australia’s soccer war. FIFA had banned a number of players who had emigrated from Austria to Australia and joined Sydney Prague FC. The best known was Leo Baumgartner, a regular for Austria Wien before his move. Hearts were warned by the SFA that they shouldn’t play against players who were not sanctioned by FIFA and so Hearts said that they couldn’t play if the four banned players were selected. The Federation, now in charge of football in New South Wales, decided that if they couldn’t select the team they wanted, the game wouldn’t go ahead and so the match was cancelled. It was perhaps with a sense of relief, therefore, that Hearts moved on to Victoria … Before we move on with the team, a unique item presented by the players to director Robert Tait during the tour. A table lighter on a wooden plinth, a silver scroll on the plinth is inscribed “Heart of Midlothian Football Club, Australian Tour 1959. Presented to Director Robert Tait by the following players”. The names of the touring players appear underneath. An amazing one-ff item. More from down under next time … Gary Cowen is a member of Hearts heritage group and is currently writing a book about the Hearts post-season tours
