G
ood afternoon and welcome from Tynecastle Park.
I’m pleased to have been able to approach today’s game off the back of an important victory last Saturday at Alloa. It’s always a difficult venue to play at and we had suffered a setback there earlier in the season, so to go back to Alloa and control the game from start to finish was good. We probably should have scored more goals on the day but there were plenty of positives to take from the win. I was happy that Elliott Frear got on the scoresheet and that Andy Irving continues to add goals to his game. We were able to welcome back Michael Smith and Josh Ginnelly, as well has giving Gary Mackay-Steven his first outing in a Hearts shirt. Postponements elsewhere meant that we extended our lead at the top of the Championship so all in all it was a good day, and it’s been a good period in terms of building a lead at the top of the league and also adding to the squad and working on new contracts. Today we welcome John McGylnn, the players and staff of Raith Rovers to Tynecastle. John has done really well and I’m sure Raith will be delighted to pushing for the top spots in the league. We know the type of game we’re in for today, given we have already faced each other in Gorgie earlier in the season, and we expect another tough encounter, but we have great belief that we can continue to perform to a high standard, especially at home. I hope everyone watching at home enjoys the game and can celebrate another three points at full time. Enjoy the game, Robbie Neilson

Hearts fans, Big Hearts volunteers and Tynecastle Park staff are invited to don a bit of tartan and complete any socially distanced challenge they wish, by walking, running, cycling, swimming, dancing or jumping on a trampoline – whilst raising funds for the Club’s charity! Supporters are encouraged to sign-up as early as possible to get involved. Entries are free for fundraiser and you will get to receive a complimentary Big Hearts’ top amongst other perks! To register, contact us at events@bighearts.org.uk or visit www.bighearts.org.uk This year again, the Hunter Foundation will continue to support Scottish

charities by topping-up every donation with an extra 50%! Commenting on the announcement, Sir Tom Hunter said: “The Kiltwalk kindness of Scots is truly unparalleled and at a time of most need we should offer hope and that’s why today we launch Scotland’s virtual Kiltwalk for the Spring. We know charities need real support right now and we also know our Kiltwalkers will step up to that fundraising challenge.” Despite the pandemic and the local restrictions, Big Hearts collected over £6,000 through the Virtual Kiltwalk in 2020 – and the funds helped our Covid-19 relief work well beyond the summer. We made the experience extra special for everyone competing in the Big Hearts’ team, including a finish line on the Foundation Plaza, a complimentary drink in the Gorgie bar, a virtual warm up with a Hearts’ VIP guest and an exclusive medal photo shoot pitch-side! Needless to say we are currently working on exciting plans for this 2nd virtual edition and look forward to sharing them with any Hearts fans interested in joining the team!

Why did you start supporting Hearts? As a Romanian living in Belgium, who has only been to Scotland on holiday (albeit quite a few times), the short answer I can give lies in the reason I keep returning to yon bonnie banks: that I’ve always felt drawn to this country. There’s also a long answer. I first heard about Hearts in 2002 or 2003, when I was 17-18 years old, by stumbling across one of the most random football documentaries ever shown on Romanian TV. It focused on a certain team from Edinburgh that seemed to be the only club able to push the Old Firm all the way in the title race. I was immediately hooked. Back then, I didn’t know much about Scotland outside the romanticised depictions from blockbuster movies like Braveheart and Highlander. But it was enough to make me want to learn more. My fledgling interest in Hearts helped. By 2005 I was scoring 30 goals per season with the marauding attacking partnership of Mark De Vries and Ramon Pereira (in FIFA, naturally). And in 2009 I was finally visiting Scotland, Edinburgh and Tynecastle (though not on matchday). Things only escalated since. In a good way. What was your first Hearts game you watched? It was not the first Hearts game I had ever seen but certainly the one I remember most vividly: Hearts vs Hibs, 1st January 2011, on TV. I was at home with my partner, we had just had our first New Year’s party together and I was hungover and half asleep by the time the game started. Still, I remember being so thrilled that she was there cheering that victory alongside me, one that never seemed in doubt despite the much belated outcome when Kevin Kyle finally headed in the winner. I started celebrating again straight after the final whistle and the rest of the day felt like a second Hogmanay. Do you have any favourite memories when it comes to Hearts games? This has to be the first game I attended at Tynecastle, on 27th February 2016. Not thanks to the result though; a scrappy 1-0 win courtesy of a Jamie Walker missed-then-scored-on-the-rebound penalty that I couldn’t even see clearly as I was seated in the front rows, opposite side of the pitch, and everyone to my right was leaning forward to catch a glimpse. It was the whole atmosphere around Gorgie though. First season back to the Premiership, with our team riding high in the league, and I enjoyed every minute of it; the pre-game pints in the Tynecastle Arms, the lively crowds in the old Main Stand, queueing for the matchday pie at halftime and hearing cries of “Jesus wept!” for much of the second half in response to the
drab affair on the pitch. And, with hindsight, having the luxury of leaving Tynecastle slightly disappointed after a Hearts victory in the Premiership. How does Hearts affect your family and friendships is football a big part of your life? Fortunately, nobody in my family supports Hibs kidding, that could never happen! Those close to me have mostly backed what they view as my eccentric choice to support Hearts. It also helped that maroon scarves and kits started becoming regular gifts from my side for our reunions. My two brothers still hold homegrown allegiances whereas I, ever since our boyhood club FCM Bacau went under in 2013, have only supported Hearts. The fact the Jambos had their own close shave within a year was just too much to bear; it was a dark period when I could barely stand to watch any football. And that’s how much football affects me. Do you have any favourite players down the years, what can you remember about watching them play? I know he’s become the go-to man of many a Hearts supporter, but I can’t look beyond Rudi Skacel. The way he used to cut inside on his left foot and launch his howitzers at helpless opposition goalkeepers; it was mesmerising! My favourite Skacel moment was when he sealed our 5-1 demolition of Hibs in the 2012 Scottish Cup final, then just nonchalantly flicked his culprit left foot forward in the ensuing celebrations as if to say: “It’s as simple as that.” What is the best thing about being a Hearts fan - and the worst? Cheering for the best club in one of the best cities in the world is a definite positive. I don’t think there are many football fans out there who can say that and actually believe it. I’m immensely proud of how the Hearts faithful came together in 2014 to save the football club, and frankly impressed with how they’ve rallied behind the club after what was a grim and dismal 20192020 season, on and off the pitch. It’s been a tough time recently following Hearts, but are you optimistic about the future? I would relay what a fellow Hearts fan seated behind me was bellowing during our disappointing outing at Rangers in November 2019, at Hampden, the last time I was in the stands for a Hearts game: “Take some responsibility!” My hope is that Hearts do just that. After all, this is the best club in one of the best cities in the world.

WILLIAM WAUGH THE ON-LOAN HERO By David Speed
16 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
Moving between clubs on loan is commonplace these days, but the system is far from modern and was even in existence before professionalism was authorized in 1893. Loans might indicate that a player’s time was finished at his parent club, but on most occasions, a move was positive, providing reserves with game time and dressing room experience. This certainly applied to Willie Waugh, a goalkeeping prospect, who came to Hearts from the juvenile grade and played for Scotland after embracing two spells on loan. It is strange to note that Willie was born in February 1910 at The Loan, a main street in the historic village of Torphichen, Linlithgowshire (now West Lothian). His mum came from the village, while his father was a railway locomotive fireman from nearby, Bathgate. Indeed, the Waugh family moved into Bathgate where Willie became a noted goalkeeper in school football and with a Secondary Juvenile team, Durhamtown Rangers. During the early months of season 1928-29, the eighteen year old keeper played a few games with the struggling Second Division side, Bathgate FC, and Willie was reported as a “man of promise.” His progress was being monitored by Hearts and the well-built youngster was eventually signed on 27 December 1928 with Durhamtown Rangers receiving a welcome donation of £2/2/- (£2.10p). Willie was a strapping and agile young man, standing a fraction short of 6’1” and weighing 11st 12lbs. He made his debut on 9 April 1929 when Hearts drew 3-3 with Newcastle United at Tynecastle, in a Benefit Match for John A. Johnston. However, at that time, the famous Internationalist, Jack Harkness, was the regular keeper at Tynecastle and although he gave Willie plenty of advice, the new man was unable to dislodge him from the Hearts goal. Willie would have to be patient, particularly as the professional cricketer, Tom Crosskey, was also ahead of him in the pecking order. Nevertheless, he was too good to be ignored and in August 1929, Willie was loaned to the once-famous Glasgow club, Third Lanark. The physically imposing custodian was three seasons with Third Lanark and he made 110 competitive appearances, initially in the Second Division. In 1930-31, Willie helped the Glasgow club to win the Second Division Championship in resounding fashion and then to consolidate in the First Division, finishing fourth in 1931-32. He came back to Hearts in April 1932 and played in the Rosebery Charity Cup. This was followed by his League debut on 2 January 1933 when Hearts defeated Cowdenbeath by 3-1 at Tynecastle, but Jack Harkness still held the Hearts goal on a regular basis. Willie was often used in the local competitions, such as the East of Scotland Shield, and during his time as back-up man, he started his impressive collection of winners’ medals. This included the Jubilee Final of the Rosebery Charity Cup when Motherwell were beaten by 3-1. In season 1933-34, Willie Waugh played only two League games and some local cup-matches, because he once again covered for Jack Harkness. He only played in friendly fixtures in 1934-35 and this really wasted the talent of the 25-year old custodian. Accordingly, on 28 February 1936, Willie went to relegation-threatened Hibernian on loan for the rest of the season. In connection with that arrangement, the Edinburgh Evening News stated: “the only desire (of the Tynecastle Directors) is to see the Hibernians save their position in the First Division of the League, where they are regarded as indispensable to Edinburgh football.” The attendance of 38,908 at the New Year derby in 1937, at Tynecastle, underlined that particular point. He helped Hibs to narrowly avoid relegation and in one vital match at

Kilmarnock in April 1936, Willie saved two penalties, ensuring a 1-0 win for the Leithers. The 26-year old keeper was examined following his return to Hearts in August 1936 and he was noted in the club records as strong and robust, with his mental condition being quiet and alert. The 6’1” keeper soon replaced a declining Jack Harkness at the start of 1936-37 and he went on to play 255 games for Hearts, with 186 in the League and Cup. Willie certainly steadied the defence and Hearts had to reject a transfer bid by Middlesbrough. During Willie Waugh’s time with Hearts, the club had many wonderful players, including their commanding and consistent goalkeeper, but the team fell short in terms of winning national honours. Hearts finished second in the League in 1937-38 and in recognition of his personal contribution, on 8 December 1937 against Czechoslovakia, Willie Waugh was called into the Scotland team after Dawson of Rangers sustained an injury. There were no fears about playing the brave custodian and Scotland won by 5-0 at Ibrox. At the end of that season, as one of Britain’s top sides, Willie Waugh and Hearts had the distinction of playing in the Empire Exhibition Cup. The maroons defeated Brentford before losing narrowly against Celtic in the Semi-Finals. In 1938-39, Hearts once again challenged for honours and finished fourth in the League. The Tynecastle team also looked good in the Scottish Cup and after scoring 14 goals against both Penicuik Athletic and Elgin City, they lost a titanic contest against Celtic after a replay. Hearts certainly had the potential to win honours, but football was thrown
into disorder following the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. Hearts were placed in the Regional League East & North Division and finished runners-up to Falkirk. This was also a difficult year for Willie Waugh who was out of action for three months, due to a broken finger. When he returned to the team in March 1940, it was reported that Celtic wanted his services and Willie’s form was recognized by selection for a Scotland XI against an Army XI at Galashiels. The following season, 1940-41, Willie assisted the maroons to the Southern League Cup Final, but Hearts lost to Rangers after a replay. That same season, he was again on the losing side as the team went down in the Summer Cup Semi-Finals, also against Rangers. Willie’s last game for Hearts was against Motherwell on 20 September 1941. He could not recover his place in the first team from Alex Anderson and asked to be released. In view of his service to the club, this was readily agreed and the big keeper was freed in October 1942. He left with some great memories and an impressive haul of 15 local cup medals: 3 in the East of Scotland Shield; 1 in the Dunedin Cup; 3 in the Rosebery Charity Cup; 2 in the Stirling Charity Cup; and 6 in the Wilson Cup. Willie subsequently played for Albion Rovers from 7 January 1943 until 19 April 1943 while also working in the steel industry. Unfortunately, his rescue work was not enough at Cliftonhill and Rovers finished bottom of the Southern League in 1942-43. Willie then had a brief spell as a junior with Bathgate Thistle and in 1945, he became the Airdrieonians representative in the East of Scotland. Willie Waugh was a long-term resident of Livingston Station where he passed away in April 1974. The retired steel-dresser was only 64 years of age.

T
hroughout the most successful decade in the Club’s history, manager Tommy Walker forged close bonds between his talented players by taking them on six post-season tours to destinations as far apart as the USA, South Africa and Australia. This season, I’m going to take a look at the memorabilia associated with Hearts’ tours of the 1950’s.
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 21
M
y mention of the double-header programme for the Australia and South Australia matches in Adelaide on 6 and 10 June had some collectors scratching their heads especially eagle-eyed Colin Robertson whose copy of the same programme featured, on the centre pages, the team lines for Australia v Hearts rather than those for South Australia v Hearts as appeared in my article for our own festive double-header against Ayr United and Arbroath. Comparing notes, this has led to the revelation that there are apparently two different versions of the programme in circulation. Another one for me to track down! As mentioned in the last article, Hearts agreed to go back to Melbourne following the game to have another crack at the Victoria state team. Perhaps a clue as to the players’ motivation for agreeing to the extra game can be found in Jimmy Wardhaugh’s piece in the Evening News. He wrote “At Melbourne the Victoria boys who had been a bit belligerent and ‘big headed’ about the previous game (which we won 5-0) received a soccer lesson and after their early burst when they were a bit fresh they got the proverbial run around. It almost made me blush on the sidelines to watch what our lads did to them. It showed what a fine piece of craft will do against ‘bull in a china shop’ tactics”. The Melbourne Age predicted that the heavy ground would suit Victoria and that they would run Hearts even closer than in the 5-0 defeat of the previous week. Having played the day before and travelled 450 miles to get to Melbourne, Hearts looked understandably tired in the opening stages but were soon ahead as Wardhaugh beat Ruytens in the Victoria goal after ten minutes. It was soon two with Willie Bauld scoring for the visitors before Alex Young made it 3-0 with just 20 minutes played. A John Cumming tackle in the box was adjudged a penalty and Vella reduced the arrears to 3-1 which remained the score at the break. In the second half, however, Hearts’ superior fitness was crucial once again as Alex Young ran riot, scoring another three to take his personal tally to four for the match. Ian Crawford added a seventh Hearts goal at the death to make the final score 7-1 for the visitors. The Victorian Amateur Soccer Football Association roped in their 6 June 1959 edition of their magazine Soccer News to act as a makeshift programme for the match. Running to twelve pages, it sold for 1/- and features a stylish line drawing on the cover of a keeper taking the ball despite the sliding advances of an opposition forward. The second page has the Hearts tour itinerary with results up to the end of May included. The Editorial on the third page has the headline “Victoria may be Proud” and lists the reasons why, notwithstanding their 0-5 defeat in the previous game, Victoria could be proud of its footballers. Four reasons are given: the first was that “Executive Directors of the Hearts have told Victorian officials that the playing surface at Olympic Park is the finest that they have seen anywhere with only one exception. The exception is the field that was especially prepared for the 1956 Empire Games at Vancouver”. Second, “players are directors of the Hearts
22 WWW.HEARTSFC.CO.UK
have stated ta the Victorian team gave them their hardest game of the tour”. Third, “Attendances at Melbourne have been the highest of the tour” and finally, “Backstage arrangements for the Hearts have been declared the best of the tour”. Of course, it would have been extremely bad-mannered for Hearts to have said anything different to any of their hosts but Jimmy Wardhaugh’s comments in the Evening News about the pitch at the Olympic Park in Melbourne at least bear out the first of those reasons. Page 7 of the programme has the team lines showing Victorian players coming from George Cross, Wilhelmina, Moreland, Juventus, Hakoah and JUST which stood for Jugoslav United Soccer Team. Other than that, the magazine reverts to being a standard issue of the Victorian FA’s magazine with a “Soccer Round-up from the UK” on page 6 featuring short snippets of trivia from “back home” including the fact that “during the 1958-59 season, 12 Scotland players were transferred to English clubs to the value of 155,000” and
“Since 1954, Celtic have tried 17 centre-forwards”. Page 8 is a page “For the Juniors” which includes tips on ball control and page 9 has the day’s other fixtures from the State and Metropolitan Leagues. League tables are on page 10 with George Cross leading the way in the State League after nine matches. Perhaps surprisingly, Slavia, who were fourth in the league had had no players called up to the State team. The Second Division notes on page 11 wondered whether “the visit of Hearts last week-end will help to improve the standard of play of clubs in this league. Hearts showed us team-work and if the clubs endevour to improve their play through this medium alone, soccer will improve”. Straight after the game in Melbourne, Hearts were off again back to Adelaide for their second game in that city. More on that match and the final games of the tour in the next programme. Gary Cowen is a member of Hearts heritage group and is currently writing a book about the Hearts post-season tours
