Does Your Sewing Space Look Like This? Spring Cleaning, Part 1

Now that spring is here and we can just about smell the flowers, it must be time for spring cleaning. If your energy rises and reorganizing and sorting gets in your blood, any fat quarters or similar sized material you would like to donate to the Raffle would be greatly appreciated. It will become a new treasure for a friend. Thanks for sharing, Terry

Refreshments - April 2012

Thanks to Jim and Terry for an inspiring presentation about their shared journey in design and quilting. These two Heartstrings members spent a year exchanging ideas, critiques, and techniques. The work they created, all based on two initial photographs, was the culmination of a wonderful collaboration - one they encouraged each of us to try.

Upcoming Programs & Events March 30, 2012 The grand opening of ArtQuilt Elements 2012, Friday evening, 6-9 p.m. at the Wayne Art Center with the exciting additional 10th celebration exhibit and sale “Hang with AQE” in the Link Gallery March 30-April 1 Saturday 10-4 and Sunday (the one and only) 12-4 April 12: Kate Themel, A Painter’s Approach to Fiber Art Kate Themel is an award-winning fabric artist and teacher living in Cheshire, Connecticut. Kate earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art in 1992 and began using fabric as an artistic medium in 1996. “I rely on my formal training when I’m evaluating a composition and deciding if it works or not. The elements of art are the same whether you use ink, paint or fabric as the medium. I use fabric to explore value, color and shape. With machine stitching I can add lines and texture. Fiber art also has this sculptural aspect that’s really exciting. I can explore a wide range of creative territory with textiles.” Over the years, Kate has developed a distinct, painterly style in her compositions but remains linked to the quilting world by her use of simple, traditional materials: cotton fabrics, batting and thread. She has created custom fiber art for individuals and corporate clients and her unique fiber pieces have been exhibited in art galleries and museums from Boston to Botswana. Her work has been juried into international fiber art exhibitions such as Quilt National, Art Quilt Elements and the Kagoshima Quilt Show in Japan. Kate recently earned the Young Emerging Artist Award and the People’s Choice Award for her work in Quilt National ’11. Visit her website to learn more about the artist: www.katethemel.com May 10: Visit to Wayne Art Center for Art Quilt Elements exhibit June: Summer Potluck to be held at the home of Bonnie Atwood. March 8, 2012 Meeting Minutes Suzan Hirsch opened the meeting with the good news that we have sold many many boxes of Quilt note cards. More will be available in smaller units of 10 cards for $5. Our program for the evening was the TERRY AND JIM SHOW. Our own Terry Ciampitti and Jim VanderNoot gave us some insight on working with a partner or “Quilt Collaboration.” Two minds come up with different ideas and ways of viewing a subject. These two certainly worked well together and created two very different final pieces. SHOW AND TELL (some notes appear with photos on page 4) • Sally Lin told us about the County Line Quilters show March 24-25 at Archbishop Wood HighSchool. She also informed us about the opening of a new Quilt Shop in Horsham. The shop, called THE ROUND BOBBIN will open in April. • Ellen Policastro is looking for a tutor for a knitting machine. She also needs sources for thread cones. If you have any information, please let Ellen know. • Bonnie Atwood has volunteered her home for the June Pot Luck Dinner. Thanks, Bonnie. Bonnie Atwood and Terry Ciampitti have volunteered to host pin making sessions before April 28, 2012. Judy Bergman has volunteered to finish these pins. Vernyce also volunteered to work on pins for the guild. • Eileen Belmont handed out month 3 instructions for the Mystery Quilt. Patti Hewson and Linda Pistilli showed what they have done so far. Patti chose pastel colors while Linda went for golds, greens and oranges. • Marci George wore a beautiful cashmere sweater in luscious deep colors. • Debbie Schwartzman talked about the Fibre Revolution going on in Philadelphia. We should be especially aware of the CRANE SHOW at 1400 American St inNorthern Liberties. Cindy Friedman was juried into the show. The Crane is a hugh space with several large pieces being shown. We are all urged to get to see the exhibit. • Suzan Hirsch and Debbie told us what’s happening with ART QUILT ELEMENTS, opening at the Wayne art Center on March 30, 2012. It will run till April 28. The show attracted over 700 pieces to be juried down to 25. Both greed that this show... the 10th, is fabulous. To make it even more exciting, fiber postcards will be on view and for sale. Made by many well known artists and members of Heartstrings, these miniature art pieces will be for sale for $50. See them at the opening, March 30 and 31st.

Show & Tell

Susan Osborne showed us the early stages of a small quilt with a cat motif, left, and a beige, green, and purple quilt with rectangular blocks, right.

Suzan Hirsch certainly uses all her wool very carefully. Even the smallest bits of leftover yarn were used in a wonderful blue, green, and purple scarf.

Elizabeth VanShaick brought a lovely table runner in black and white with vintage kimono fabric.

Vernyce Dannells is always surprising us with something unusual and creative. This time it was a group of poems she wrote about fiber and creativity and artists. Printed here, with permission, is “Conservator.”

Conservator by Vernyce Dannels Fabric is my life. It begins like this: Ogled, pined, mothballed, hoarded, traded, stolen shredded, laundered, draped, ironed, starched burned, ruched, pleated, smocked, appliquéd folded and blocked, dyed and to die for.

Joann Nolt is fishing again. This time she had a bold bright single fish in blues and oranges.

I’m caught up in the lyric romanticism of their names Dupioni. It sounds like fabulous food – thick and smooth. I can already smell it. “Pass the Dupioni please. “I’ll have more of that! How do you spice your Dupioni?” Plissé sounds like a ballet position. A special step, formed after aligning angled ankles directly beneath the knees, then turning only the torso left or right. The seersucker punch is a mighty whack smack that renders opponents instantly vertiginous – referees even moan when disallowing that move. Slubs, aren’t those the latest risqué drinks? Order even one and risk waking up in urinals Or sporting blue forearms. Hmm, the doctor has prescribed Rayon treatments for your hair loss. Jacquard is the latest Xtreme board game, and corduroy’s become a wild new music genre. Go to your post office straightaway for the new issue gingham stamps, and remember to buy Sequin, the amazing memory booster breath mint. People once asked, “How many polyesters died for that?” when they saw the lime green lounge suit abominations sixties designers successfully trumpeted as the emperor’s new clothes. We wrap ourselves in fabric every day – show some respect for your rags.

Debbie Schwartzman wore a knitted poncho in shades of orange, rust, and brown. But she saved the best for last. Debbie’s first grandchild will be celebrating her first birthday with a beautiful quilt from her grandma. Both the child and the quilt are Debbie’s MIRACLE OF SPRING. The quilt is soft and feminine with flowers and words and lovely colors. Good Job, Grandma!!!
