Intangible Policies

Manifesting Civic-ness Toronto, Ontario 2018-2019 Thesis AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Suite In the ever-shifting political climate in Toronto, there is an opportunity for re-imagining civic space. The city can create a network of Local Democratic Zones in each ward that replace institutional enclosure with community porosity. The intention is to increase programming that encourages participatory democracy through physical spaces that are accessible, vernacularly-focused, and selforganized. This alternative approach promotes a balanced urban governance through engagement with a substantive citizenry.

The idea of the local democratic zone is to provide the needed programmatic and spatial functions of each of these elements, without dictating the architectural assignment. The interior and exterior elements are to be prioritized, arranged, and implemented in such a way that best promotes the five general functions. This method of designing is open, descriptive, and adaptable to different sites and communities. In combining these key elements of program and space, the centre and its openness, the result is a hollowing out that makes room for different iterations of civicness.

How can programmatic and spatial qualities come together to encourage local participatory democracy? By creating a network of substantive-focused zones connected across an urban centre as a platform for civic-ness. For instance, Ward 2 Etobicoke Centre is far more sprawled than Ward 10. The rooftop of a large industrial building is a potential site for the LDZ. The five initial general functions are arranged as per this new context with its constraints and opportunities.

Custom Corian Vanity & Sink w/ Dyson Integrated Wash+Dry Two-tone Tile Design

Commercial Restrooms Markham, Ontario 2019 Professional AutoCAD, SketchUp The clients requested a much-needed update to ground level restrooms that served both employees and visitors. The design included a refreshing yet calm colour palette with unconventional detailing, including a large slab of Corian as the entry piece, visible from the hallway beyond. The design and construction was to fit around existing plumbing, structural, and mechanical components, resulting in a budget-friendly and modern facelift on a central but often overlooked space.

Dense City: GatheRING Toronto, Ontario 2015 Competition Sketchup, V-Ray, Adobe Suite Sometimes, we have to be bold. Velo Toronto, Ontario 2013 Academic Group Project Rhinoceros 4.0, Adobe Suite The Velo System is the new amenity for Toronto cyclists. Stations are situated at convenient locations throughout the city, encouraging people to explore. A swiping barcode provides a secure locking system that cyclists can trust as they leave their bikes to go about their day, eliminating the need to carry a lock. Each station provides a map showing the placement of other Velo stations as well as preferred routes of travel. Stations flash pink when occupied, lighting up the street.

RU Community Park Toronto, Ontario 2013 Academic Rhinoceros 4.0, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite Situated in the southeast corner of campus is a parking lot cum community garden. The location is a perfect bridge between the Ryerson campus and engaging the rest of Toronto. The park has an open market space made from shipping containers, three large gardens, and a greenhouse in order to grow food all year long. Rye Homegrown and various community members come together to learn to grow food, sell their wares in the market, and participate in networking with sustainably-minded people.

InterSTITCHal Tecate, Mexico 2014 Academic, Competition Revit, Rhinoceros 4.0, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite The American-Mexico border can be seen as a murky, intimidating, solid, and forbidding structure. InterSTITCHal raises the human element of cultural and physical crossings above all else by using the pedestrian path to bond together Mexico and US customs. Stitching and weaving steel and fabric represent the capacity for symbiotic and productive relationships between these two countries that are currently fraught with tension.

Funding for the fencing was cut and construction ceased after 1040 km.

Tecate, Mexcio US-Mexico Port of Entry

On the Mexican side of the border, residences take up all available space. Both Mexican and American progamming is scattered on the American side of the border.

Pedestrian building erected, still used today.

The Secure Fence Act was passed to provide fencing for 1/3 (1100 km) of the border.

Gathering the Mexican and American together makes a streamlined and easily understood border crossing system without disturbing the residences.

Shaping the Mexican and American buildings to complement and interact with each other allows the passengers and pedestrian traffic to flow smoothly underneath the building’s connective covers.

InterSTITCHal encourages safe and prosporous travel between cultures. Each customs hall provides an open and fresh place of refuge for pedestrians to rest that is neither indoor nor outdoor, that is protected without being opaque, banishing the aura of frightening limbo that is felt upon entering a typical customs hall.

Exiting customs on the Mexican side via the pedestrian bridge, the American customs hall becomes steadily more visible.

Berkeley Co-Housing Toronto, Ontario 2018 Academic, Group Revit, Rhinoceros 4.0, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite The Berkeley Co-Housing project is all about making all members of a community feel welcome. A community encompasses many kinds of people with many levels of interaction, and this building provides a structure for levels of activity together or individually based on a gradient of privacy. Two crucial members of this Berkeley community are Toronto’s aging LGBTQ population, and a preschool for young toddlers. These two groups have the opportunity to mingle in a way that is beneficial to both in this unique housing situation.

Program Distribution

Community Functions In a dense urban site with sensitive user groups within the building, a careful balance between private and public functions was crucial. Rather than adhering to a strict hierarchy of private functions always far away from street level, the rear courtyard provides intimate activity space. In contrast, the interior tall atrium provides a vertical continuation of common space for residents.
