Message from the President The Good News
There is a rhythm to the school year. The excitement of welcoming a new freshman class, the anticipation of new goals and opportunities, and always the finality that comes with commencement. It seems to surprise me every year, my desire to launch the senior class to a future yet to be realized and then the ambivalence of letting them go. It was especially true for the Class of 2013. Every class carves its own signature. It’s always unique and often reflects a collective profile. This class was filled with leaders, but their shared signature was their compassion and humility. They were so accomplished, but you rarely heard it out of their mouths. I know they worked hard, but they didn’t complain and you rarely saw them sweat. They exhibited a gracious leadership that will forever be their legacy.
“To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform.” St. John Baptist de La Salle
They had their hand in six state championships during their four years with us. They brought the stage to life with their performances in The Music Man and Oklahoma. They built robots and engineered rocket launches. They explored the complex issues of this world and struggled to find God in the tragedy at Sandy Hook and in the devastation of tornadoes and earthquakes. When gunshots rang through Clackamas Town Center blocks from school, they returned to our campus seeking solace and sense. I told them at commencement and know that it is true: they have lived and witnessed real life. And it occurred to me reflecting on this fact, they laid the foundation for their own gospel. The Gospel according to the Class of 2013. The gospel is often referred to as the Good News. They are the good news. Their beginning chapters have been witness to His love. As we say goodbye to this class, I am not only struck by how many lives they have already touched . . . at Lot Whitcomb Grade School, on a reservation in Browning , Montana, at Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles and border towns in Arizona. However, I think what struck me more profoundly was the joy that radiated from their faces when I witnessed the slide show during Senior Assembly, full of unceasing smiles and easy interlocking arms. I recognized that they work for justice, not out of duty or guilt or a sense of obligation, but from gratitude. And that is powerful. Our lives are best lived when we embrace the Good News. That is their gospel. That is part of their foundational story of faith. That is, in the end, the purpose of Lasallian education. That our students not simply hear the Gospel but that they are formed by it and it becomes who they are. We have been blessed by the Class of 2013; now go and bless the world. Live Jesus in our hearts,
Denise L. Jones, President 2

Enter to Learn Accept Everyone. Respect All Persons. Value the Individual.
This year our beloved principal, Tom Dudley (far left), announced his retirement. After 40 years in education, he decided it was time to pass the baton of institutional leadership. He leaves a legacy of instructional excellence and professional development that continues to position La Salle as one of the best college preparatory schools in the state. While we miss the leadership and camaraderie that marked Tom’s tenure, we are delighted that Andrew Kuffner (left) will serve as La Salle’s tenth principal. Andy has been an inspiring educator and administrator at La Salle for over 17 years and he brings integrity and compassion to his new role as principal. Through the gift of providential direction, Andy brings a depth of experience and wisdom which will lead our students to “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.” There is no greater blessing for our community.

Congratulations to teacher Lisa Moran and librarian Colette Cassinelli on their successful grant application to the OETC/CenturyLink Foundation for Education. The grant will fund Spanish class iPad minis, an Apple TV, new projector, apps and training for Moran and Cassinelli.
At the end of the 2012-2013 school year, La Salle honored retiring Principal Tom Dudley with a tribute to his trademark mustache (above). The school also said good bye to many exceptional educators who retired or moved on to new opportunities.
This program will serve as a model for rolling out mobile devices throughout La Salle’s campus and across the curriculum. CenturyLink’s Christopher Denzin and Scott Demming (above) presented the check on June 27, 2013, principal Tom Dudley’s last day before retiring.
Thank you for your service: Amber Chambers, Brian Crawford, Paul Dreisbach, Tom Dudley, Erv Latincsics, Randy Rice, Beth Schaller, Kathy Schultz, Lauren Strand, Theresa Stuhrman, Ted Pfeifer ’88, Sue White and Michelle Zumpano.
Leave to Serve Push Your Limits. Prepare for Life.
La Salle Prep’s Theatre Department presented its spring musical, “The Music Man,” to sold-out crowds in April and May. The production, directed by Ernie Casciato ’72, featured a cast of La Salle students, parents, teachers and future students (right) including performances by Rebecca Smith and Brayden Wernli (above).
La Salle’s Signum Fidei students, teachers and mentors (above) attended the annual Timbers U-23 School Days field trip on May 24, 2013. Signum Fidei assistants were invited to this year-end celebration to thank them for their hard work. Although the weather was chilly and it was drizzling, the Timbers won against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
La Salle’s new Little Dresses for Africa Club has 12 active members who have sewn more than 25 dresses that were mailed to Africa in May 2013. The group (above) meets about every six weeks on a Saturday morning to sew the dresses. Club moderator and admissions assistant Angela DeCosta taught the members how to sew. 5
Enter to Learn Remember the Presence of God. Concern for the Poor. Overcome Injustice.
The Oregonian awarded La Salle Prep first place in the 4A Oregonian Cup for the 2012-2013 school year. The award recognizes overall excellence in academics, activities, athletics and sportsmanship. Schools are awarded points based on final team standings in each sport offered, the school representation in individual sports at state championships, the number of teams with cumulative GPAs above 3.0 and general sportsmanship. La Salle held first place for the 4A Oregonian Cup during the 2012 fall season thanks to the boys’ soccer team’s second place finish, boys’ cross country finishing third and girls’ cross country team winning the state championship. After the 2012-2013 winter season La Salle was in second place due to strong performances by the basketball teams. Girls’ basketball finished fourth at the state championships and boys’ basketball finished third. All of La Salle’s teams finished on a high point this spring, with boys’ tennis finishing in third place and boys’ golf winning a state championship (right). The school’s point total also benefited from the fact that no La Salle players or coaches were ejected throughout the entire school year.
In February 2013, a group from La Salle (above) braved the Boston winter to attend the Harvard Model Congress, the dynamic government simulation conference run exclusively by undergraduates at Harvard College. 6
In addition to the Oregonian Cup award, the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association granted La Salle Prep the OACA 4A All Sport Award for the 2012-2013 school year. Throughout the past school year, the majority of La Salle Prep students were actively involved in sports and athletic clubs. Seventy-five percent of La Salle’s students participated on at least one team during the school year. Thirty five percent of students were members of at least two teams during the year.
Karen Kessler and Randy Rice traveled with a group of La Salle Spanish students to Costa Rica in late June and early July 2013. The cultural immersion trip featured economic field trips, service projects, host families, classes, soccer, dancing, hiking, rafting and poolside dining (above).
Leave to Serve Joslynn Bigelow ’14: Big Sister Personified.
As hundreds of area teenagers primped for the prom on May 18, 2013, La Salle’s Joslynn Bigelow ’14 prepared for the Sparks of Hope (SOH) 2nd annual fundraising gala at the Oregon Convention Center. Joslynn (right) embodies the Lasallian value of acting as a big sister to those in need. She is an active volunteer advocating for children. With Lee Ann Mead, SOH founder (above right), Josylnn and other volunteers nurture children recovering from abuse. Among many other activities, she is a first generation teen mentor for SOH, which helps children who are survivors of abuse. Joslynn created the SOH mascot “Hope the Hippo” (right) and works with other mentors to give a voice to children and shine a light on the prevalence of abuse. Joslynn’s passion for helping children drives her annual collection of clothes for Cares Northwest (above right). To learn more about Sparks of Hope, visit sparksofhope.org and Cares Northwest at caresnw.org. In sixth grade, Joslynn started volunteering with the TOPSoccer outreach program, which helps children with disabilities enjoy the game of soccer, and she is now a “head buddy” (right). In addition to the exceptional community service Joslynn performs, she is an active La Salle volunteer. She helps with the Polar Plunge Team (right) and is involved with the Signum Fidei program. We honor and celebrate Joslynn’s commitment to serve others.
