Message from the President

Celebrating 45 years of Lasallian values As La Salle Prep celebrates its 45th year, we also welcomed the largest freshman class in school history while maintaining an average class size of 26! These freshmen were welcomed into the La Salle community by a distinct group of professionals, who for the second consecutive year, selected La Salle as one of the 100 Best Non-Profits to Work for in Oregon. It is worth noting the highest scores awarded in the survey completed by faculty and staff were attributed to the statements addressing their belief in the mission and purpose of the organization.

“With a combination of faith, energy and generosity, we will continue to build a faith-based community that instills young men and women with a passion to use their knowledge to serve humankind.”

In its essence, this is the Lasallian Difference: A team of professionals that view their work as vocation. This is a belief that informs their relationship with students and one another, and ultimately, the purpose of their work. Lasallian values pervade our decisions and daily interactions with one another. We remain committed to meeting the needs of students with innovative instructional strategies and compassionate support. In developing a relevant and rigorous curriculum, we carefully consider educational research, trends of U.S. graduates in the world and trends in industry and technology, as well as information provided through college and university relationships that we continue to develop. La Salle Prep is a vital part of a worldwide network of schools and ministries dedicated to educating youth, especially the poor. As such, a core principle of Lasallian education is that all motivated students deserve an excellent education. This past year, 1,240 benefactors invested in La Salle’s mission, allowing La Salle Prep to once again significantly increase financial aid. In 2010-11, over 43% of our student body received financial assistance, with over $1.1 million invested in the young

people entrusted to our care. In 201112, these figures have increased to over 50% of students receiving $1.4 million in assistance! In addition to financial support, La Salle parents, alumni, and community volunteers continue to be the school’s lifeblood. This year alone, 17 La Salle alumni serve on boards and 11 La Salle alumni have returned to the school to serve through teaching and professional service to the mission. Beyond the hours commited to the school, our community members continue to help those who are underserved both in our local communities and around the world. Through the ongoing generosity of our community, we continue to progress on the Campus Master Plan. This past year, we added the Signum Fidei Learning Center, built a covered practice facility for baseball and softball, and developed a new student hub known as the Faith, Service and Community Center. This year, we look forward to the demolition of the old “bus barn” which will make way for our new 1,000 seat athletic grandstand, a new press box, additional storage, bathrooms and concessions. I am grateful for the confidence and support of our benefactors noted in the pages of this report. I am hopeful you will join me in our shared mission to continue to provide an excellent college preparatory education rooted in Gospel values. With a combination of faith, energy and generosity, we will continue to build a faith-based community that instills young men and women with a passion to use their knowledge to serve humankind. Blesssings,

Denise L. Jones, President

More than ever, access to La Salle Prep has a broader and stronger reach thanks to the more than 1,240 donors who donate their resources annually. La Salle Prep students and educators continually reap the benefits of generous benefactors. In 2010-2011 annual donations provided scholarships and financial aid, launched the Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Academy, enhanced classrooms, computer labs, community gathering spaces and helped build the Falcon Practice Facility. Annual donations also allowed teachers to enhance their excellent instruction through increased technology and professional development. The confidence of our benefactors in the abilities of our students and faculty is clearly reflected in the willing financial support of all those who support La Salle year after year. With a combination of faith, energy, and generosity, we continue to build a faith-based community that instills young men and women with a passion to use their knowledge to serve their community and world. The Office of Advancement, through the annual giving program, alumni relations, special events, the student fundraiser and other activities, supports the school’s financial growth and sustainability. The office exists to support student success by insuring access, maintaining academic excellence and providing increased opportunities to connect learning with real-life experiences.

Annual Giving Program La Salle’s annual giving program is the cornerstone of our annual fundraising efforts. It is vital to advancing the mission and work of La Salle Prep and supports our efforts to optimize financial accessibility for students, especially the underserved, who desire a rigorous and relevant education preparing them for college and life. Annual unrestricted donations allow us to maintain minimal expenses with a high return, putting more money directly toward funding every aspect of a high quality Lasallian education. The steady growth of the annual giving program, in revenue and participation, allows us to further advance our institutional goals.

Parent Investment Plan We recognize the significant investment and sacrifice many families make to send their children to La Salle. That is why La Salle has never required families to cover, through tuition, the full cost we incur to educate each student – a difference of $3,096 per student last year. Notably, our largest support of annual donations comes from our parents who choose to make a voluntary, tax-deductible contribution above and beyond tuition through the Parent Investment Plan. In 2010-11, more than 30% of La Salle’s parent community contributed 73% of our annual giving contributions, totaling more than $120,000, through the Parent Investment Plan. We consider a gift from our parents the ultimate vote of confidence in our programs, faculty and students.

advancement news Yulefest & Auction The 44th Annual Yulefest and Winetasting in December 2010 hosted hundreds of guests at the school’s longest-running event (photo at right). Congratulations to the following Christmas tree raffle winners: Ed and Kim Lilly, Tim Sheils ’99, Peter and Denise Jones, and Bob and Anita Dethlefs. The 17th Annual La Salle Gala Auction and Dinner in April 2011 hosted more than 200 guests and raised nearly $160,000 in net proceeds. The auction raised more than $85,000 through Dollars for Scholars. A special thank you to Tim and Beth Fuller, our $10,000 Matching Gift Sponsors. Mark you calendars for the 18th Annual Auction on April 14, 2012.

Student Fundraiser: Wreath and Apple Sale The wreath and apple sale is La Salle’s only school-wide student fundraiser that directly supports La Salle families. Proceeds help bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of education which ultimately supports our efforts to keep tuition increases to a minimum. Selling Jazz apples not only supports our school, but also our sister school: La Salle High School in Yakima. In fact, half the cost of every box of apples supports our school, the other half benefits La Salle Yakima. 2010-2011 net proceeds exceeded $68,000, which is more than double than in 2009-2010 when students sold only wreaths. Additionally, 89% of students participated in the wreath and apple sale. Contact Dedie Cameron Keeney ’79 at dkeeney@lsprep.org or 503.353.1439 if you’re interested in supporting this year’s student fundraiser.

2011 Golf Tournament The 14th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by the Alumni Association was sold-out for the fourth consecutive year and exceeded fundraising goals. The tournament at Stone Creek Golf Club on July 8, 2011, raised more than $13,000 to support Alumni Association efforts including need-based tuition assistance and underwriting the school’s new scoreboard. We are grateful to co-chairs John Parker ’77 and Jack Powell ’73, whose leadership over the past three years has allowed us to consistently fill a full field of golfers and exceed our fundraising goals. A special thank you to Jim and Billie Parker Schilling ’78 and John ’77 and Lori Parker for hosting a post-tournament social gathering. Congratulations to the winning foursome of Ryan Steele ’99, Dominic Stelter ’99, Nick Jones and Aaron Hazel ’99 (pictured at right). Mark you calendars for the 15th Annual Golf Tournament on July 13, 2012.

2010-2011 Volunteer of the Year: Dan Wood This annual award recognizes the outstanding contributions volunteers make to enhance the Lasallian community. At the Benefactor Reception in June 2011, La Salle honored Dan Wood, pictured at right with his wife Ann and daughters Amanda and Stephanie ’11, as the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. Athletic Director Brian Crawford presented the award to Dan, who served as the Booster Board President for two years and currently serves on the Foundation Board. In addition to dedicating countless hours leading the Booster Club, Dan and Ann were dedicated parent volunteers while Stephanie ’11 was a student. They provided support for Yulefest and Auction and assisted in developing a strategic sales plan for spirit wear. We are grateful for Dan’s loyal and exemplary support. 7

Annual Giving gets boost from class of 1973 La Salle alumni from some of the first graduating classes are playing a pivotal role in providing scholarships for deserving students. Beyond generously supporting the school’s commitment to provide opportunities to motivated students regardless of their ability to pay, they are challenging fellow alumni to join their efforts. This fall, La Salle Prep welcomed its largest freshman class in more than 15 years. As more families discover the remarkable benefits of Lasallian education, La Salle is more in need of alumni support to provide accessibility for those students who qualify for financial aid. In 2008-2009 the Advancement Office proposed a matching gift challenge to a group of alumni from 1972 and 1973 to encourage alumni and their parents to participate. The group embraced the challenge and raised $20,000 through donations from classmates and alumni parents from 19701974. These donations were inspired by a $10,000 matching gift challenge established by a small group of lead donors from the classes 1972 and 1973. For every gift of $250 or more from an alumni parent or member of the classes of 1970-1974, this group matched the gift, up to $10,000. Thirteen percent of the gifts received from this matching gift challenge were from first-time donors and 42% of donors increased their previous donation amount. The challenge’s success inspired this 1973 alumni group to join together again in March 2011 to discuss keeping the challenge going to provide sustainable funding for La Salle. In effect, this group committed to raising $10,000 per year for four years, a total of $40,000, through donations from their class to provide scholarship assistance for one student to attend La Salle for four years. In just three weeks, the group secured $10,000 for the first year. Since the announcement, which was made at the annual auction on April 9, 2011, members of the classes of 1972 and 1979 have announced plans to develop similar programs. Additionally, La Salle launched a new campaign designed for young alumni and first-time donors called the Falcon Access Network (FAN) or the “$12 x 12 program.” For just $12 per month for 12 months, donors contribute $144 a year toward the Annual Giving Program. For more information on FAN or to start a class competition, please contact Director of Alumni Relations Liz Raines ’02 at lraines@lsprep.org or 503.353.1425.

Falcon Teams Compete Fall 2011 Post-season La Salle’s boys’ cross country, girls’ cross country, football and volleyball teams won their respective conference championships in fall 2011 and all six Falcon varsity fall programs competed in the post-season. Boys’ cross country won their sixth consecutive conference title, placing first overall out of seven teams at the Tri-Valley Conference Championships. All seven La Salle runners finished in consecutive order, and took fourth through tenth places. The girls’ cross country team edged out Molalla for the conference title; it was La Salle’s first since 1984. The Falcons took first, second and fifth. La Salle’s boys and girls’ cross country teams each placed fourth at the OSAA 4A State Championships in Eugene. Boys' soccer defeated Cascade 2-1 in the first round of the OSAA 4A state playoffs on Nov. 8. The game went to penalty kicks, which La Salle won 7-6. La Salle traveled to Phoenix on Nov. 12 for a quarterfinal match against the top-rated team in the state. The game was tied until the final five minutes, when Phoenix fired a shot in the top corner of the net ending the Falcons’ run. Girls' soccer defeated visiting McLoughlin 6-0 in the play-in round and lost to Henley 4-2 in overtime in the OSAA 4A state playoffs. The volleyball team won the Tri-Valley Conference title on Oct. 20 with a 3-0 win at Gladstone. The Falcons’ 9-1 conference record earned them the top seed from the TVC and a date with the Cowapa League’s fourth seed, Yamhill-Carlton on Oct. 29. The Falcons swept the Tigers 3-0, winning the final 11 points of the third set. La Salle lost 3-0 to Hidden Valley in the first round of the OSAA 4A state playoffs. The Falcon football team completed the third undefeated regular season (9-0) in school history. La Salle defeated Yamhill-Carlton and Roosevelt in their first two post-season games and beat visiting North Bend 32-30 on a 27-yard field goal as time expired. The win sent La Salle to their first semifinal game in 26 years. At press time, La Salle was scheduled to play Elmira in the semifinals at Hillsboro Stadium. News Faces On Campus La Salle Prep welcomed five new staff members in fall 2011. Amber Chambers and Amy Moore joined La Salle to implement the new Signum Fidei (Signs of Faith) program for students with learning differences. Chambers is a Signum Fidei teacher and Moore is the coordinator and lead teacher. Kate Nichols is the new physics teacher as part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Academy launched in fall 2010. Liz Raines ’02 returned to La Salle Prep as the director of alumni relations and Angela DeCosta is the new admissions assistant. “Big Brother” Bill Retires (again) Bill George (pictured with his wife Pat) served as teacher, baseball coach, counselor, dean of students, and principal of La Salle Catholic College Preparatory for 35 years. He has mentored countless teachers, students and staff - many of whom he calls family. During his retirement celebrations in 2011, many people shared how much they learned from George over the years and many confessed they often ask themselves “What would Bill do?” before they make difficult decisions. George retired as principal in 2007, but returned to the school part-time as the school’s director of facilities for the past few years. In fact, he continues to help the school on a project basis. La Salle principal Tom Dudley shared his thoughts on following in George’s footsteps, “As soon as I arrived at La Salle, I realized I was standing on the shoulders of my predecessor, Bill George. His leadership has left an enduring mark on the culture of the school. Many people talk about the mission, but Bill George lives the mission. Persistent in his efforts, yet quiet in his demeanor, Bill is a model for us all.” To celebrate his retirement, George participated in the Lasallian Vandu Paaru program in India during summer 2011. In honor of his 35 years of servant leadership, the school established a named scholarship fund, the Bill George Scholarship Fund, which will provide tuition assistance for La Salle students. “We knew establishing a scholarship to assure access to a student who would not be able to attend La Salle without financial assistance would be perfect. This is a gift that embraces the foundation of the Lasallian mission and embodies Bill’s 35 years of faith-based service,” said La Salle President Denise L. Jones. For more information about the Bill George Scholarship Fund, contact Katie Allen at 503.353.1426 or kallen@lsprep.org. 20

Lasallian Educator of the Year The Lasallian Educator of the Year award honors a La Salle Prep employee who exemplifies the ideals of St. John Baptist de La Salle, and who models the founder’s values in her life and in her work. Theresa Stuhrman, who has been teaching for 31 years and has been at La Salle Prep for 13 years, was selected by her peers as the Lasallian Educator of the Year. Stuhrman earned her degree from Washington State University and has spent all but two years of her teaching career at Catholic schools. One colleague who nominated Stuhrman for this honor wrote, “She models the values she teaches, respecting the individual and seeing the best in each student. Her faithful participation on Journey retreats also demonstrates her tangible and faithful commitment to the mission and to La Salle’s students.” She is described by her colleagues as the “epitome of a Lasallian big sister; kind, caring, compassionate, always positive, and always has a smile on her face; always offers help to all, deeply concerned about all students; lives the mission in school and out; a gift to our school – the most likely to volunteer for work behind the scenes.” “I am still in awe and humbled that I was selected for this amazing honor. I work with such an incredible group of people everyday who make me a better person by how they live their lives,” said Stuhrman.

Enter to Learn. Leave to Serve La Salle Prep students and staff answered the call to serve through extraordinary works of service this past year. Irv Latincsics, Stephanie Blumenson and Bill George participated in the Lasallian service trip to India. Blumenson, La Salle’s director of service, describes service as an opportunity to witness one’s commitment to Christian values, become a socially aware citizen while also fulfilling practical and specific needs in a community. Blumenson (pictured above with Bill George) described her time in India, “I am so glad I came to India. I know how truly blessed I am and I’m so thankful for this opportunity. I fell in love with those boys and felt God’s presence in them. This trip will be with me forever.” Bill George shares her sentiments, “I was so impressed by the efforts of the Brothers and their partners for the people of southern India. They are truly doing the work of the Founder. ‘Salvation through education’ for all is at the core of their vocation and it is bringing remarkable results to needy, loving and grateful people,” explained George. Sophomore Joslynn Bigelow (top left) volunteered during summer 2010 with the TOPSoccer program for children with disabilities who want to participate in team sports. She helped teach soccer skills and coach the participants. Senior Zach Nuhring (above left) managed his Eagle Service Project by cleaning and re-striping the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church parking lot. La Salle’s Eagle Scouts include 2011 graduates Noel Oishi, Jeremy Kuehn, John Lien, Spencer Savage, Ty Symonds, Nick Colton and Josh Cleary. Sophomore Natalie Burke (above left) participated in Youth with a Mission. She worked on a peach line to sort fruit, dry and package peaches to send to hungry people throughout the world. Her group sorted 763,000 pounds of peaches (a record). “I loved the place and saw a whole new perspective of food I feel most people overlook. I also haven’t touched a peach since,” said Burke. Senior Rachel Kane (bottom left) and Tess Seger ’11 volunteered with Catholic Charity’s summer program tutoring refuge children. Seger worked with a girl from the Sudan and Kane worked with two boys from Iraq. “Volunteering with these children this summer was definitely a highlight and I was sad to say goodbye to them,” explained Kane.

Carly ’10, freshman Kate and senior Elise Christoferson (above) traveled to Thika, Kenya, to volunteer at The Karibu Centre run by Orphans Overseas. “Despite the ten, sometimes eleven, hour days, each night we were anxious to go back to the centre so we could play with the students, love the babies, and converse with the staff,” said Carly Christoferson. Amber Chambers and Stephanie Blumenson attended La Salle’s first L’Arche Immersion (above right) with seniors Alexa Bryant-Capellas, Teresa Casper, Sarah Holmes, Noah Banks and Maddie Mott; juniors Jenna Moffat and Jeni Lidster; and sophomores Travis Root and Krysta Brunelle. They worked on the farm in Tacoma for three days with the L’Arche community. La Salle students experienced what it means to be part of a meaningful community rooted in Christ’s message to love one another. They recognized what it means to offer your unique, God-given gifts to others. Recent 2011 graduates Grace Powell and Haley Wayt (above right) traveled to Guatemala City to live and work in an orphanage for a week, playing with the kids and working in the surrounding community. Each afternoon they helped facilitate activities including face painting and soccer matches. “We fell in love with the culture and the people and we cannot wait to return next summer,” said Powell. Sophomore Parker Wilson (above right) participated in a project focused on feeding starving people in third world countries. His group dried and packaged over 27,000 pounds of fruit and Wilson said he plans to help again next year. Since August 2010, freshman Josh Hamman (bottom right) has volunteered at the FIDO (Friends Involved in Dog Outreach) Food Bank. The food bank is open every third Saturday of the month and Hamman helps process orders and carries completed orders for clients. “Through service, La Salle Prep develops intelligent, caring, academically prepared leaders who understand the value of community and the rewards that come from giving of oneself,” Blumenson explained.

Bee Parisi’s Luncheon

The Ernie Journey

La Salle’s beloved first librarian, Bee Parisi, organized a luncheon at Portland’s Willamette View retirement community. All guests at that table had a connection to La Salle. They celebrated the school’s 45th anniversary with La Salle President Denise L. Jones.

La Salle’s drama instructor Ernie Casciato ’72 embarked on a monumental 30-week weight-loss challenge in 2010 to improve his health; inspire students who struggle with obesity; and, at the same time, benefit the legacy of La Salle’s performing and fine arts.

The group included in-laws, grandparents and family members of La Salle faculty and staff along with grandparents of current La Salle students.

The Ernie Journey videos featuring bi-monthly weighins at the doctor’s office and a trip to his favorite Italian restaurant on SE Division Street, Taste Unique, were posted on La Salle’s YouTube page (youtube.com/ LaSallePrep). Although Casciato’s personal weight loss journey continued after 30 weeks, The Ernie Journey officially ended on closing night of La Salle’s spring musical when he announced he had lost 101 pounds.

Congrats to Tyler and Sarah!
