February 6, 2017 To whom it may concern: I am interested in the editing internships offered by LDS Publications. I would like to be considered first for the General Publications internship, then the Liahona internship, and then the Ensign internship. I would prefer the spring/summer internship, but I would be happy to work during the fall as well. I am a junior at BYU majoring in English and minoring in editing. Before attending BYU, I completed a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during which I was involved in online proselyting. I have completed several editing classes, including Modern American Usage, which I have been a teaching assistant for since September 2015. I have also completed Basic Editing Skills, in which I became wellfounded in copyediting, and Genre and Substantive Editing, in which I learned to analyze the overall concept of a work. In addition to this, I have experience working with an oncampus magazine. I believe that my skills can help LDS Publications continue producing exemplary works and furthering the aims of the LDS church. In addition to my experience as an editor, I am also enrolled in World Religions and Myth, Legend, and Folktales. It is important to understand other religions, modern and ancient, in order to relate to those not of the LDS faith and to help converts to the LDS religion understand the doctrine and feel a sense of belonging. Through these classes I am furthering my understanding of other belief systems, and I am also able to analyze and then write about the similarities and differences between faiths. As mentioned previously, I also participated in online proselyting, which helped refine my ability to write to a broad group of people while still being able to reach the individual. It also helped hone my ability to concisely state my meaning while retaining the interest of the reader. In my editing classes, I learned how to avoid obscurity in language so that my meaning is clearly understood. These classes also helped ingrain the rules for sentence style, punctuation, and mechanics into my writing and editing. My time at the on-campus magazine Leading Edge has added editing experience outside of college classes and has given me the opportunity to perform administrative duties. Throughout all of these experiences, I have worked as an individual and in groups. While part of a group, I have been able to combine multiple opinions and ideas into a working whole. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. Please feel free to contact me any time at (801) 664-1563 or hmwhite42@hotmail.com. Sincerely, Heather White
