Who Had Weapons? Only the pharaoh’s military had weapons. The Egyptian civilians were not allowed to have weapons. They have to be an authorized soldier do have one. Egyptian soldiers had weapons that they used in battle. A common weapon used by the ancient Egyptians was a dagger. The dagger was used mostly in wars. A dagger is a shortened version of a sword combined with a hook. It is a very powerful and strong weapon. The Ancient Egyptians added the hook to make the dagger more powerful. The Pharaoh had a bunch of weapons. He had seven very powerful weapons including the sling, mace, spear, battle axes, bow and arrow, swords, and chariots daggers. Everyone who had weapons either had bronze, gold, or copper weapons. Usually, soldiers had copper and bronze, but rarely gold. Some soldiers had chariots. Those soldiers had bow and arrows and shields for far away attacks. They would ride on their chariots while they were shooting arrows. The foot soldiers had daggers and swords for close-up attacks. But the chariot soldiers and the foot soldiers had at least one thing in common - they are both the pharaoh’s military. The Syrians had the same weapons as the Egyptians, which was good for the Egyptians since it allowed them to know how their enemies’ weapons work. Fun Fact Did you know that the dagger was invented in 1539 BC?

Making and Using Weapons Weapons were made of different materials, so let’s see how it was made. The sword is made out of cooper and bronze and sometimes gold. The shield was made of animal skin and papyrus. The shield was used to block enemy weapons. The axe was used to stab the enemy and was made of bronze. The Egyptians threw it and slashed people with it. The bow and arrow was a curved stick made of wood with a string on it. The soldiers would get an arrow and place it into the string. They would then pull the string back then let go. The arrow hit the enemy. The mace was made of a wood stick and a stone ball (if stone mace) or copper ball (if copper mace). The soldiers would put the ball on top and would hit people with it. The dagger was used kind of like a sword. It was in between the size of a sword and a knife and was made of bronze. All of these powerful weapons were used in ancient Egyptian warfare.

Battle Armor The battle armor that most soldiers wore was mail, which was made of copper and gold. The pharaoh wore ceremonial armor in battle, which is more protective. The soldiers wore a wrist guard to protect them from arrows if they mess up while shooting. They had a chest plate that was leather for soldiers who didn’t have the mail chest plate. The battlers wore kilts waist to knee to protect part of their legs. The soldiers had leather helmets to protect their heads. Leather was the most reliable source for helmets. Ancient Egyptian shield looks like this.
