Friedman’s 100th Birthday: Time To Remember

V

anilla, chocolate, or strawberry. Drive, walk, or public transit. Rent or own. In the United States, we make more choices every day than we realize. In countries ruled by dictators or communist regimes, citizens have little choice where to live, what school to attend, or what job to pursue. That’s because those nations are not centered on freedom and free markets. Milton Friedman, the foremost economist of the 20th century, believed that competition was the lifeblood of freedom and the best way to ensure a stable democracy, lifting the masses out of poverty. The Nobel laureate, whom The New York Times dubbed “the grandmaster of free market economic theory,” is recognized worldwide for his work. When Friedman began his career at the University of Chicago, free markets looked like a lost cause. Half the world was in slavery and the other half was caught in a crisis of confidence in its central idea: government based on individual liberty. Friedman helped restore the free world’s faith in liberty, sparking a global revolution that transformed international politics, economics, and, toward the end of his life, education. Every summer, the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice hosts events to celebrate Friedman’s birthday. In 2011, there were 85 events in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and

six countries honoring Friedman’s work as one of history’s most influential thought leaders. But this year there will be special emphasis, as July 31 marks what would have been Friedman’s 100th birthday. A gala will be held in Chicago to celebrate Friedman and the influence of his life and work worldwide, welcoming dignitaries from around the globe. In addition, to celebrate Friedman Legacy for Freedom Day on July 31, the Friedman Foundation plans to host 100 events across the country and around the world to celebrate and bring greater awareness to Friedman’s influence. The Foundation is offering grants to organizations or groups interested in hosting educational programs, breakfasts, lunches, or events to discuss Friedman’s work. For example, last year in Arizona, college students gathered to watch a segment of the “Free to Choose” public television series where Friedman discusses what’s wrong with government-run school systems. In Idaho, charter school families and supporters enjoyed an ice cream social and movie viewing. And in Hong Kong, a free market think tank held a panel discussion with students, diplomats, financial and legal representatives about Friedman’s influence as a monetarist and free market ambassador. The Friedman Foundation encourages similar events to celebrate 100 years of one very influential economist and American—Milton

Four Easy Ways Drivers Can Save Hundreds In Vehicle Ownership Cost

C

aring for your car can put you on the road to savings. In fact, a savvy consumer can save hundreds of dollars a year on automotive expenses without buying a new car or changing his or her lifestyle. All it takes is a little time and research, and the good sense to choose better-performing products. Here are some easy ways to save money and have your current car last longer: Spend More to Save More Upgrading to one of today’s modern high-performance motor oils can make a meaningful improvement to your car’s fuel economy and engine life. For instance, independent studies have documented that Royal Purple motor oil improves fuel economy by as much as 5 percent and can significantly reduce engine wear. Using high-performance synthetic motor oil, as opposed to conventional oils, also allows for more miles between oil changes, reducing maintenance costs and the amount of time spent out of service. You’ll pay a little more for premium motor oil, but the savings in fuel and reduced maintenance costs more than make up for the higher price. Find out more at www.royalpurple.com. Shop for the Best Rate One of the easiest ways to reduce the costs associated with your car is to shop around for insurance. Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to do your homework. Get at least three price quotes. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet. Your state’s insurance regulator may also provide price comparisons. Other ways to reduce insurance costs can be found by visiting the Insurance Information Institute’s website at www2.iii.org/individuals/autoinsurance/. Properly Inflate The U.S. Department of Energy reports that underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. One study estimates that 50−80 percent of the tires traveling on U.S. roads are underinflated. Surprisingly, car owners could save up to 2 billion gallons of gas each year by properly inflating their tires. Keep it Clean A clogged air filter can increase fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent. Air filters keep impurities from damaging the interior of the engine, so replacing dirty filters will save gas and protect your engine. Advice On Bringing Your Own Device To Work W

hen employees can have all their personal and work information at their fingertips, it can be a big help—and a major headache—to them and their employers. The Trend Increasingly, workers today are bringing their personal devices to the company IT department to enable access to e-mail and other productivity apps on them. According to a recent Forrester report, threequarters of U.S. workers pick the smartphone they want rather than accept IT’s choice. What’s more, another recent survey discovered increasing numbers of enterprises across all industries are supporting a bring-your-owndevice (BYOD) model, and in more than half of those instances, employees shoulder the cost of their device and service plan. The Problem So now employees can use their favorite devices for work but companies must support more platforms and deliver business apps including e-mail, chat and portals on iPads, iPhones, Android and Windows phones. That means that data and apps will be used from any location over any network—which can endanger sensitive company information, potentially getting workers or their employers into trouble. To keep confidential data stored on personal mobile devices from falling into the wrong hands, many IT departments turn to third-party solutions to better secure, monitor, manage and support the variety of mobile devices used by employees. Using one of these solutions, IT

organizations can implement security controls such as passwords and remote wipe and lock, which lets IT erase corporate data from a mobile device in the event it’s lost or stolen. The challenge is that most employees don’t want to enter a complex password every time they need to make a phone call, send a text message or update their Facebook status. Plus, when employees use their personal phones for work, a remote wipe could erase personal apps and data in addition to corporate data and applications. A Solution Fortunately, companies such as Good Technology take a different approach to these BYOD security challenges and keep the best interests of employees and the company in mind. Good helps companies separate and secure corporate data while leaving employees’ private information untouched. For example, rather than remotely wiping the entire device, IT can wipe only corporate data, leaving personal data and applications intact. This lets employees use their personal mobile devices at work without having to worry about compromising company information. Keeping Information Secure 1. Don’t use cloud programs on your mobile device to share corporate files and data. 2. Beware of e-mail fraud. Don’t send e-mail to anyone you don’t know or respond to e-mails from unknown sources without first verifying that they are legitimate. 3. Secure your device’s settings and have it

automatically lock after five minutes. 4. Don’t forward e-mails from your corporate address to private e-mail accounts, especially e-mails with attachments. 5. Don’t use check-in apps everywhere. 6. Turn location setting off when not using apps that require it. 7. Be careful of beta programs/apps—they can be dangerous, as in many cases the developers haven’t sorted out security yet. Help For Your Best Lawn And Yard Ever

T

here’s good news for homeowners who want the grass to grow greener on their side of the fence. Throughout May, lawn, garden and equipment experts will provide free, one-on-one advice on everything from how to control pests and finally win the battle against weeds to troubleshooting a lawn mower that won’t start. “We’ll help everyone who calls and take as long as necessary to get homeowners the answers they need,” says Trey Rogers, an internationally known expert on lawn and yard care and leader of the hotline, which is sponsored by Briggs & Stratton Corporation. For example, if your grass is brown or dying where it should be green, he advises, there may be a simple solution. 1. Can you blame it on the

dog? The nitrogen in dog urine can burn your lawn and cause a widespread brown patch problem. You can create a special gravel or mulch area and train Fido to go there. 2. Is your mower blade dull? Dull blades tear rather than cleanly cut the grass, which can weaken and damage the lawn. Have the blade sharpened once a year. 3. Did you spill fertilizer or overfeed your lawn? Too much fertilizer is a well-known grass-burning culprit. Always follow package instructions when applying fertilizer. If your spreader drops too much in one place, water that spot on the lawn generously. 4. What about too much water? If you overwater or if water pools in certain areas on your lawn, you can drown the grass roots, causing areas to die out. Survey your lawn for

dips you want to avoid dousing. 5. How do I grow grass in the shade? In deep shade, put down mulch instead. In partial shade, seed the area in the spring and fall, when leaves don’t block the sunlight. From May 1 to 31, anyone can get a free online or phone consultation with a lawn, garden or equipment expert on any problem by visiting www. YardSmarts.com or calling 1-866-YARD-TIPS (1-866927-3847). Photo submissions are welcome if the problem is difficult to describe. In addition, every Friday during the month of May, experts will be available for livechats to share information more broadly with homeowners. The top lawn and garden questions will be posted on the website, www.yardsmarts.com, where you can also find expert advice

and information related to yard care and equipment. The Yard Smarts Hotline is sponsored by Briggs & Stratton, the largest maker of engines for outdoor power equipment. If getting your yard in the best shape ever isn’t enough motivation to check out the hotline, the company will give away a $300 gift certificate each week to one homeowner to purchase a new lawn mower or other needed yard care equipment.
