There are different reasons why a person would want to learn how to speak French. Whatever your reason is, it can be confusing to learn a foreign language on your own but with the right method, you can learn how to speak French like a native. Try the following advice and it will be almost impossible for you not to be successful at learning the language. If you want to learn how to speak French you will need to get the right materials: buy or borrow French textbooks: just because you are not in school anymore does not mean you cannot use the material available to school students. Ask the staff of your local bookshop for a French vocabulary book and a French grammar book. Make sure the grammar book has a list of French verbs and their conjugation. If not, you will need to buy a separate French verbs book. You can also go to your nearest school and ask a French teacher which textbook he or she uses in class. Learn a number of new words everyday: set a daily target of, for example, 10 new French words and phrases to learn everyday using flashcards that you can make out of index cards. Alternatively, write the words down in a notebook that you carry with you at all times so you can revise while waiting for the bus, in waiting rooms, while queuing at the supermarket, etc. This is a great way to learn how to speak French while you would otherwise be wasting time. The best way to learn how to speak French is to speak it so just learning from books is not good enough: listen to French speakers and repeat what they are saying. Children learn best from songs, so why not listen and learn some French songs so that you can get the correct pronunciation for the words you are studying? Try and get some French music CDs, or download them legally from the Internet, you can also watch French movies on DVD that you can pause and rewind at your leisure Games are also an effective way to learn French: try and find simple crosswords, word searches or play scrabble in French. If you are learning French with your children, then the whole family can enjoy a game of eye spy in French, where you spot an object from a certain colour (more advanced players can use the first letter of the word) and ask the other players to guess what that object is. If you have access to French TV or radio channels these can help you learn how to speak French as the more you hear French natives speaking their language, the easier you will find it to learn. If you do not live in an area where you can receive French TV programs, search for French news websites and blogs that have video content available to watch online. There are a lot of French radio stations now available on the Internet so try and listen to these as often as possible. Do not worry if you cannot understand a thing in the beginning as it takes a while to get used to French pronunciation.
Anyone who wants to learn how to speak French can do so using complementary methods; it is best to combine textbooks with the listening and speaking of the language rather than using a single method. French teachers know this and the most effective French courses are the ones that use a combination of all of these.
