CONCEPT Continuity : The site is Located behind Shalalat park from east and Nobar Park from the west. So the building is designed to be a continuing landscape area which is not acting as an obstacle between the 2 parks. HISTORY The Site is containing a historic building was used in wars as a space for manufacturing simple war tools ... and containing historic trees. So the form was subtracted from the historic building and the historic building was ensured by expanding parts of the skin in front of it. So the 2 courts found inside the building are the places of the historic trees so it protect them and make a functional process as light and wind and a vision connection . CONTRAST: Its known that contrast confirms both items. Using straight lines represented in the 2 rectangles and using curves in the functional process needed like the plaza which connects all people from different destinations in it .. and the curved courts which maintain historic trees all of that confirm the motion of the curve.

07 REVITALIZATION OF AL-MAHMOUDIYA CANAL About: A group project in a the UEED module in the IUSD master program Type: Study project Institute: Stuttgart University, Germany Year: 2015 Team: With Namariq El-Rawi
2015 Architecture Portfolio
Potential of the Canal The canal passes through different cities until it reaches Alexandria. It is neglected and used as wastewater and garbage collector, even though it has the potential of being revitalized through creating a new system of wastewater treatment which will lead to the revival of the surrounding areas including Minet el Bassal district in Alexandria.

THE PULSE EFFECT

Small-scaled interventions must be done that can be considered a propotype replicated around the canal. There are many surrounding derelect buildings that can be adaptively reused as a wastewater and rainwater decentralized treatment stations.

CONCEPT Heba Aggour
Through the accumulation of many factors, Al-Mahmoudia canal developed a very bad „digestive system“ where the inputs do not meet the outputs; while the inputs are mainly deluted water from the Nile pollutants of wastewater and garbage coming from the factories, residential areas and the farms, the outputs are of harmful nature to the surrounding; ecologically the water unusable and the conventianal wastewater treatments produce more gas emmisions, economically there are no investments gained from the use of the canal, socially there are no activities held on the waterfront of the canal as it is used to be.

GAPS AND NEEDS OF THE REFUGEES In order to identify the needs of the refugees an Analysis of different Facebook pages of refugees in Stuttgart was conducted. The size of the blue circles reflect how often the several needs are mentioned, the grey circles show whether or not there have been activities been going on in order to tackle the need(according to the Facebookpages). From a broad research on all the different programs and their activities that are conducted in Stuttgart within the context of Refugees by different organizations, we matched them with the needs identified. What can be seen from the diagram is that the Freundeskreise programs are approaching the majority of the needs announced, that are related to everyday life in the refugee accomodations. While governmental bodies and charity organizations are focusing on accomodation, language education, job finding. It seems that child care is covered on several levels, by Freundeskreis as well as schoolauthorities and youth welfare office. The question can be raised, whether tackeling problems on the level of the Freundeskreis is a way of solving a problem, or whether only symptoms can be treated. The need is produced on another level and can only be solved on that level.

TIME-LINE OF REFUGEE’S JOURNEY
37
This story board shows all the stages a refugee goes through starting from the first entry to Germany till knowing if he will get the approval or get deported. Story is divided into main stages, highlighted every time on the time-line. This closer analysis is illustrated in the form of in between diagrams and explained in the text. It covers all the three aspects that are studied in this research (and will give a deeper understanding of not only what happens regarding each aspect but also in which stage does it happen in the refugee’s journey. The role of the different actors is highlighted within these stages, so that it is always clear who is responsible for what. This storyboard is based on our findings and refugees‘ testimonials through the talks that we had with different cases we came across.

CONCLUSION OF THE SOCILA ANALYSIS
This affects them greatly, without a job, they only have free time doing nothing. The excess free time and the long waiting can have psychological impacts causing them to suffer severe depression. However, here comes the importance of having programs ad activities that could fill this free time. In case, these programs were not enough or were not tackling their real needs, they will continue in the same vicious cycle and will suffer from depression. This leads to their isolation and the depletion of their social interaction, thus limiting the opportunities of integrating into the society. As a reflex, they start to become secluded and confined in their own bubble. In addition, they start to have lower trust in themselves leading to lower self- esteem and higher sense of reliance and dependency on whoever could help them. Therefore, they start to become extremely dependent on the social workers and eventually on the system in general.
Heba Aggour
After undergoing the research and understanding the complex situation of the refugees and even understanding the hidden situation behind the known, it became crystal clear that they are not three separate aspects. However, they are indeed extremely interlinked together in cause-effect relations. They build on each other, if one is achieved the rest will and vice versa. It was found that one of the main causes of most of the problems faced by refugees is the economic status especially here in Germany and the fact that they can not work except after a certain period of time.
Architecture Portfolio
At the beginning of the research, the aim was to find a way of bringing all the three topics together which are: - The social connections - The economical Connections and - The programs for and with the refugees.

Intervention strategies
Architecture Portfolio
2015
Apart from the open space that is proposed to be a playground, the three blocks in the site define an existing open space that is the intervention point for this proposal. Since space is currently underutilized, with effective programming and phasing as a strategy, it is possible to create an active self-actualization platform. Accordingly, there will be four phases of projects in the camp all of which will be part of a program to assist refugees to gain a sense of control and feel responsible for their space. The major advantage of phasing these very similar projects is to become more accurate in the techniques used, the amount of material needed and the time it would take to yield produce. Moreover, it would be easier to get sponsors and test the willingness of the refugees to engage in the project.

The planting boxes are used to plant flowers with an aesthetic value and also serve as defining elements. The flowers could be whether wild flowers or flowers that could be used for other purposes like lavender. The flower boxes are higher than the planting beds and are expected to be communally taken care of. The second type is the planting beds that are made using wooden pallets are put on a well nutrition earth that gives the necessary depth for the plants to grow. They are much lower and are distances in a way that allows good circulation and ample working area. The third type is the green house that is expected to be completed in the last step.

Phase one- Urban garde-
2015
Keeping the existing walking path that is fluid and currently used, a common open space that is proposed to be used as a common area for the gathering is defined. this space is ideal because it is private at the same time easily accessed by the inhabitants of all the blocks. It faces the playground, therefore, could easily merge with the field in case of a large event. The areas of the urban gardening are the entire strip of what used to be a vacant open space that had some green cover. The grid structure resulting from the dimension of the palettes could also be ideal to create a system of ownership to each slot increasing the engagement of individuals and claiming responsibility for space.

Aswan and the high dam represent a geographical obstruction of the Nile. This landscape obstruction evolves into a disturbance of the Nubians settlements on the islands with the elimination of agriculture and trading as their main economic activities, being forced to rely on tourism, which jeopardizes their identity. After some discussion, the aim of the catalog shifted from a more geographical reflection including the islands of Elephantine, Soleil, The botanical garden and Hessa to the particular situation of the islands trapped between the two dams on Aswan Lake.

Dichotomies are understood as a contrast between two matters that are represented as being opposed or entirely different. In this part, we utilized the notion of ‘dichotomies’ to highlight on interesting urban topics in Djerba Island. As we try to capture these phenomena at a certain time, we stress out on the idea that these dichotomies along with the captured phenomena continuously undergo a process of formation and change.

The trapped condition of Aswan Lake islands; Awad, Philae, Bigga, and Hessa, increase their reliance on tourism in order to survive. Nonetheless, the Nubian community is aware and reluctant of letting go their identity. The aim of this catalog is to give a critical view of the islands imbalance present and future if equilibrium between livability and identity is not reached. In order to keep a Nubian identity, it is necessary to have a balance between the traditional way of life and new economic systems.

Snapshots in time
Tipping the balance
In order to understand the current status of the three trapped islands, a snapshot of the cataract islands’ history was taken. The history of this area has been subject to three crucial transformations that have changed the face of the islands; socially, economically, environmentally and spatially. In this section, an analysis of the transformation that happened was carried out starting from the flooding period before having any dams, then after building the Aswan dam reaching the current situation of having also the high dam.
The previous section illustrated the beginning of the imbalanced islands’ situation, where they are trapped between preserving the identity and maintaining livability. This section examines the impact of the faced forces that could lead to extreme scenarios thus tipping the balance Through a set of collages, we show two scenarios the First scenario is the islands’ mutation and loss of identity as a result of the excessive tourism forces. The second scenario is the complete death of the islands and the loss of livability as a result of completely resisting the forces and holding to identity. Tipping the balance.
(In)balance on the islands 2016
Detached from their natural chain of the first cataract, the trapped islands on the Aswan Lake are faced with different forces that have resulted in their current state. Using the concept of a balance this section will discuss the effects of the forces on the Identity and liveability of the islands.

Roccascalegna village has houses which are featured with their pitched roofs. The way these houses were designed inspired the proposal to create rectangular units with a nontraditional proportion of pitched roofs. The ratio of each pitched roof differs from unit to another according to the perfect angle to view the castle with the backgrounded sky and stars. The pitched roof consists of two sides, the size of each size changes to offer the best view of the stars and the fort according to the place it settles in. The unit is designed to help the occupants achieve the feeling of being directed to the universe and the nature in complete isolation from the high pace of daily life
