The article on this page mentions the Ultra-Orthodox community. In this column, we’ll discuss the word ‫ְקהִילָה‬ (kehilla) community. This word comes from the root letters ‫ל‬-‫ה‬-‫ק‬. This word is usually used to describe a group of people that have gathered together. A ‫( ְקהִילָה‬kehilla) community is a defined group of people that live in a specific cultural framework. A ‫( ָקהָל‬kahal) audience, crowd is a group of people who are present in a specific place and a specific time; other than those two factors, there isn’t necessarily any connection between these people. For example, a group of people present at a sports stadium, concert or protest. A community center is called a ‫( ֶמ ְרכַּז ְקהִי ָלתִי‬merkaz ke’hilati). When people gather around in a disorganized manner, perhaps out of curiosity, it is called ‫ִה ְת ַקהֲלוּת‬ (hit’ka’halut) a gathering. A group of singers is called a ‫ַמ ְק ֵהלָה‬ (makhella) choir.

THE DAGESH

Read the "Did You Know?" column on this page. Fill in the spaces with new words that you learned.

A leader who gathers the public is ‫( ַמ ְקהִיל‬makheel), gathers the crowd. In the Bible, there is a description of a special ceremony in which the Jewish nation is gathered at the Holy Temple called ‫( ַה ְקהֵל‬hak’hel) assemblage. In this ceremony, the nation gathered at the Holy Temple to hear the king read from the Pentateuch. This ceremony was likely held once every seven years, although some people say it occurred every fifty years.

The dagesh changes the pronunciation of the letters: ‫ פ‬,‫ כ‬,‫ב‬.

The article on this page discusses the word ‫( ַמדַע‬mada) science which comes from the root letters ‫ע‬-‫ד‬-‫י‬. Therefore, someone who is involved in the field of science is a ‫ַמ ְדעָן‬ (mad’an) scientist. The word ‫( יֶדַע‬yedah) means knowledge. If someone knows something, he can say ‫( ֲאנִי יוֹ ֵד ַע‬yode’ah) I know. Someone who knows a lot of things is a ‫( יְַדעָן‬yad’an) knowledgeable person. The word ‫( מוֹדִיעִין‬modi’in) means both information service, and intelligence (army). The ‫מוֹדִיעִין‬ collects ‫( מֵידַע‬maydah) information. The word ‫ מוֹדִיעִין‬is also used to describe the information booth that is located at the entry to buildings. When a person publishes a ‫מוֹ ָדעָה‬ (moda’ah) advertisement, notice, they are publishing information they want people to know about. A news item is called a ‫יְדִיעָה‬ (yedi’ah) and a message or a formal announcement is a ‫הוֹ ָדעָה‬ (hoda’ah). Information booklets are called ‫( מֵידָעוֹנִים‬meyda’onim).

These letters have a double role: as consonants and as part of the nikud symbols (as vowels). For example: ‫ עִיתוֹן‬- The letter ‘‫ י‬is part of the chirik preceding it and is not pronounced as a ‘y’ sound. In the word ‫ילד‬, the ‘‫ י‬functions as a consonant and is pronounced yeh. In punctuated Hebrew, the letters ‫ י‬,‫ ו‬,‫ ה‬,‫ א‬which do not contain nikud symbols, are not pronounced as consonants. They are silent.

‫ַמ ֲעלֵה אֲדוּמִים‬

Ma'aleh Adumim ‫( ַמ ֲעלֶה‬ma'aleh) - upwards slope ‫( אֲדוּמִים‬adumim) - red colored (pl) The name of this city came about because it is found on the ascent to Jericho, and because of the red color of the rocks in the region. It is a relatively new city located in the Judean Desert, just east of Jerusalem. This ancient city was mentioned in the book of Joshua (15,4) when areas of the land of Israel were divided up between the tribes. There is also a funny story in the Talmud that mentions ‫ ַמ ֲעלֶה אֲדוּמִים‬. The story describes the efforts of the Cutites to sabotage the Jewish calendar. First, a bit of background on the Cutites. They were a group of people who followed a religion that was somewhat similar to Judaism, but had a different manner of interpreting the Bible. The Cutites wanted to sabotage the Jewish calendar by damaging the accuracy in which the new Hebrew month was declared. Determining the first day of a new month is crucial

and disrupt these witnesses, and so one Cutite tried to bribe one of the Jewish witnesses who had come to testify before the sages. According to the story in the Tractate of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish person who the Cutite had tried to bribe made the following declaration to the sages: “I walked in ‫ ַמ ֲעלֶה אֲדוּמִים‬and saw the moon between two rocks. The head of the moon was similar to a young goat, and had a tail. And if you don’t believe me, here are 200 zuzim (the currency of those times) that the Cutite who is standing outside paid me in order to say what I said.”

in Judaism, since this declaration ultimately determines when the Jewish holidays of the entire year will be celebrated. Declaring the wrong day for a holiday could result in some inconceivable mistakes, such as having people behave regularly on Yom Kippur, and immersing themselves in prayer on a regular day. In the past, in order to declare the new month, witnesses from all over the land of Israel would come together and testify to the size, shape, and position of the moon they had seen. According to these testimonies, the ancient sages would then determine when the new month began. The Cutites decided to try

Shin Gimel -

(‫גִי ֶמל‬-‫)שׁין‬ ִ .‫ג‬.‫ש‬

This phrase is taken from the military lingo. It is the acronym for ‫שׁוֹטֵר גְדוּדִי‬ (shoter g’dudi), the person who stands at the gate of a military base and decides who is and isn’t allowed to enter the base. In the world of military ranks, it is the simplest type of soldier. This acronym now has meaning in the civilian world as well, and a rather negative one at that. It indicates the lowest person on the rung, and is used when a person of low rank is blamed for something very significant. It has already happened in Israeli history that a committee formed to investigate a major organizational failure will find the .‫ג‬.‫ ש‬responsible for the problem. Indeed, in certain serious cases, committees have determined that it wasn’t the commanders or the managers that were guilty of major mistakes, but the people at much lower rank levels. Israelis who were unhappy with this way of looking at things said the committee found the .‫ג‬.‫ ש‬responsible for the mistakes. For example: They are going to say the .‫ג‬.‫ ש‬is at fault for everything that happened in the Lebanon war.
